  • In this video I'm hoping to fix something that a lot of Miata drivers experience at some point in their Miata life; Lifter tick! I'm doing an oil flush with a product called M-Flush, provided by Royal Trading. Royal Trading was cool enough to send me this product for free so I can try it out. I don’t get paid to make this video so that gives me the opportunity to be honest and up front with you guys about this product. Interested to see if this fixes the lifter tick? Have fun watching!

    I'll have to give this a try on my wife's Miata and my Santa Fe. They both have lifter tick.
    Your videos are some of the most well done, informative and entertaining videos I watch. You're a very likable guy that presents things in a manner that's easy to follow along with a good balance between details without becoming too technical. Your video quality and editing is also very well done.
    I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your Miata tips and adventures with everyone.
    It's very appreciated.

    I definitely don't want to crap on your video or this product, but generally speaking, an oil change almost always removes lifter tick in my experience. Keeping your oil level on the higher end of full also helps. As does using a thicker oil. I've used 20-50, but settled on 10-40. When I hear lifter tick, I know it's time to check the oil, and sure enough, it is always low when I check it after hearing. After filling to the appropriate level, my tick is gone. So, before people go out and buy expensive additives and go through a procedure, try topping off your oil first, changing the oil to something thicker second, THEN try specialized products.

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Před 6 lety +23

      No problem in sharing your story Greg! I’ve always keep an eye on my oil level and I didn’t notice much difference at my oil changes. I’ve used the same oil for this oil change but added the flush as well and it helped in my case! But I totally agree with you; First try your pointers before buying an oil additive

    • @schneir5
      @schneir5 Před 6 lety +1

      That's interesting. I had figured that thinner oil would help with the lifter tick issue rather than thicker, since it would reach the top of the engine faster.

    • @bagelbytes69420
      @bagelbytes69420 Před 6 lety +4

      i run 0w-40 Castrol Edge or Brotella T6 in mine. I prefer the thinner cold weight for cold starts since thats where the majority of engine wear comes from. Just something to consider.

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Před 6 lety +4

      BagelBytes: Yeah that’s the same reason I went with a 0w40 oil

    • @MrChevroletEd
      @MrChevroletEd Před 6 lety

      The oil level didn't matter on my old miata, it was always full since it didn't burn or leak any. It was always gold when I did my oil changes too. Sure enough though, the ticking would not stop after the oil reached operating temperature. I would have tried this if I still had it.

  • @testacorsa150

    Good video. I took all my lifters apart and clened them. Took 3 days lol. Happy you got such good results with a flush. One word of caution though: don't pressure the engine with the flush added to the oil, as the viscosity drops a lot, so the oil can't protect very well from metal to metal contact. oh, and Always use fully synthetic oils :)

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the tip, I did not know that about the viscosity! 👍

    I was getting supplies for my own oil change, then my local parts supplier recommended the same product used in the video purely by accident. Then I remembered this video and brought it also home, my Miata had the same horrible lifter tick. I went to a friend on a 125KM drive so I put it in when I left home, we stopped at a local wrecking yard to buy some parts for a different car we own and after stopping there we noticed that the lifter tick was almost gone.
    After changing the oil which was extremely black from al the gunk that was in the engine the lifter tick is no longer noticeable. I really enjoy the extra noice reduction, personally I don’t like cars (or bikes for that matter) which make a lot of noice since I drive my Miata mostly trough local nature which I really love hearing so getting rid of the lifter tick has really helped with that

    Hello i watched you're clip, it was very good and this worked wonders for me after no start for 6 years!!!! I dumped 300ml old oil thinned with 350ml Diesel. Ran for 6mins with RPM under 3000, dumped all oil, changed with average oil, ran for 35 mins. Dumped oil. Put in high quality oil..... Runs SO SO smooth now, have ran for just under 200km with no problems! minor tap before lifters get oil up on cold start for aprox 1 seconds. The Hydrolic lifters are in the WORST SPOT EVER!!!! and i found them at $25 EACH Aus and i would have needed 16. I spent $125 all up with filters and fixed the worst tap you have ever heard. The engine flush idea was outstanding for my needs and the 96 MX5 1.8L has 110,000kms runs perfectly now. Thanks mate!

    I did it a different way with my old 1960 VW while camping in the Sierra Mts. I had it parked on a slope with the fuel tank uphill on the high part. During the night the pressure of the fuel opened the spring on the mechanical fuel pump and seeped gasoline into the oil sump filling it up. Fuel even came out the dipstick hole! I leveled the VW and drained the oil and fuel out of the oil drain hole. I had only one extra qt. of oil and put it inside the engine. I made it down the mountain to a gas station and added more oil.
    That little VW never ran better!!

In the clip where you did the pull there is a buzzing sound midway through the rpm range, mine does it too and sounds more like a sheering metal/high pitch vibration. It would be nice to have everyone put what oil they use, how many miles are on the engine to see if it's either a common problem or a maint. issue. My miata has around 120k miles on it, I get a little bit of tick if I let the car sit for a week or to but it rarely lasts longer than a min. or two. I've ran Amsoil in it from the start and the engine is very clean. No hint of sludge. I change the oil once a year. I put around 5 to 8K miles a year but I take it out for a drive every 5 days regardless of having some where to go just to keep the engine seals lubed... These are great cars, I don't leak or burn oil, Get around 30mpg with it. I think the lifter issue is people using lower quality of oils and/or let it sit for very long times or take it on real short trips without getting the oil hot enough to get crap in the oil ect... If I let it sit for less than 2 days I might get a little tic but it goes away very quickly, maybe less than 10 seconds.. I also never drive less than 15mi. when I take it to the local stores or when ever I drive it to heat the oil to avoid any chance of the oil getting gas or moisture built up.

      It's for your heated rear window. When it's activated the light comes on. With my car (1993) you can activate it by turning on your heater and then it will automatically shut off after about 10 minutes. It only works if you have a heated rear window connected to the connector behind the driver seat. In this video I have my hardtop on which has a heated rear window. I hope this answers your question.

  • @espokane
    @espokane Před 4 lety +1

    Almost two years later - has the lifter tick returned? Every NA seems to have different behavior with this. We have three and they are all different. One does it when due for an oil change, one only does it briefly at cold-start, but the third is the one that led me to this video. I thought I had it beat by using Rotella T6 oil but it still happens sometimes. Usually it goes away for a while after an oil change though. I'm thinking that trying to clean the lifters with an additive like this is my next thing to try. But if your tick came back...maybe this stuff didn't work as well as hoped.

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Před 4 lety +1

      It only comes back when I drive the car hard but it does need an oil change so that could be the reason too. Just try it once with an additive and see how it goes. Can’t hurt to try right?

    Lifter tick on miatas is generally harmless and mostly just annoying.
    How do you fix it? Ask your miata. Everyone has a different solution.
    Simply lick the dipstick, insert it into the radiator, then take the now-coated dipstick to the oracle who lives deep within the Swiss alps. Do not ask him "how do i fix the lifter tick on my miata?", this is incorrect. Instead, ask him why the number 7 is shaped like a maple leaf. His answer will be an animal. If that animal is a canine, try a heavier weight oil. If it's a feline, try seafoam. If he tells you that he doesn't know what a miata is, you must then obtain an Ouija board and commune with the spirit of the car itself, which may include ritual sacrifices, in order to appease. Why? I can't bring myself to use any sort of engine cleaner or flush. I feel like if it's gonna rustle up all the dirt and crap that's hiding in the recesses of my engine, that will then be flowing around with the oil, then when you drain the oil you're never gonna get every last bit out. So now there's bits of dirt and potentially tiny bits of metal flowing around in the oil, and we all know that's not ideal.

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Před 6 lety

      Well it’s also not ideal to leave sludge inside your engine.. better brake it down into smaller bits and flush it out then to have one big ‘lump’ of sludge block your oil pickup and ruin your engine right? I get what your saying tho.. if it doesn’t feel right, don’t use it 😉

      Liftertick happens to a lot of miata drivers which all use different kinds of oil, it even happens with the recommended oil. Also I change my oil regularly.
