  • In this video I am going to replace my big ugly air box with my own DIY cold air intake and heat shield! I don't think it's much of a performance mod because you will gain only a few horsepower at best but it looks cool and it sounds great so that's good enough for me!
    Heat shield / mounting bracket measurements:
    » www.miatamods.net/.cm4all/med...
    Things you will need:
    » Socket wrench
    » 10mm socket
    » 12mm socket
    » Socket extension
    » Ice cube tray (optional)
    » Flat head screwdriver
    » Phillips head screwdriver
    » AFM Adapter plate (r.ebay.com/aRdhn3)
    » AFM gasket (optional)
    » Pod filter (nl.aliexpress.com/item/3inch-...)
    » M4 stainless steel bolts and nuts
    » Two 76mm 90° silicone hoses (or one 180° silicone hose)
    » Two 75mm aluminum connectors
    » Four 77-95mm hose clamps
    » Heat shield / mounting bracket (parts below)
    » Pliers
    » M6 stainless steel nuts (optional)
    » Sharp knife
    » Zip ties (optional)
    Heat shield / mounting bracket parts:
    » Cardboard, a permanent marker and scissors
    » 2mm metal sheet
    » Angle grinder with a metal cutting disk
    » Vise and a rubber hammer (to bend the metal)
    » Drill and a metal drill bit
    » Rivets and a Rivet gun
    » Sandpaper, de-greaser and high temperature paint
    » Oven to bake the paint
    Pod filter mounting bracket parts:
    » M6 hook bolt
    » M6 90° bolt
    » M6 bolt connector
    Music I used:
    » Chuki Beats - Sun ( • 'Sun' Happy Chill Boom... )
    » Chuki Beats - Feather ( • (FREE) 'Feather' Real ... )
    » Both instrumentals produced by Chuki ( / chukimusic )

    Hi miatamods!! I like this cool mod!! Sounds great and I'll do the same to my '90 na, the only doubt I have is how can this affect to the AFM in vertical position, don't you think the bearings of the fan could be damaged?? How long are u using it?? Any problems??
    Thanks

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Před 6 lety

      Hey man, thanks for the compliment! The AFM does not have a fan or bearings in it. It only has a flap inside that opens and closes and the AFM measures the position of this flap to calculate the airflow. I guess you could say that gravity can have a small effect on this system but I I haven't had any problems so I guess it's fine.

    Great mod! I'll be doing something similar myself. Predictably, people are bashing it of course, to which I would say: it may add or lose 1% or 2 % or 3% of power at various points in the rev range. So what? You will never, ever feel a 1%, 2%or 3% difference in performance while you're driving.
    Miata's are all about how they feel to drive, NOT ultimate performance- and that feel-factor was one of Mazda's key design priorities. Sound is a huge factor in that. If your Miata sounds nice, it will feel better to drive.
    Mine has felt way better, and is far more fun to drive, since I fitted an aftermarket exhaust system. Is it any faster? I doubt it. Does it sound nicer? Hell yeah! Any performance gains or losses from a filter arrangement like this will be so negligible as to be imperceptible, but it will transform the way the car FEELS to drive, and that's what Miatas are all about.
    As for cold air/ hot air...it's as far away from the hot exhaust as it can get, and without detailed studies of airflow under Miata bonnets, that's good enough. The stock box draws air from a tiny gap between the bonnet and fender, this draws it from the gap between the headlamp, fender and bonnet, from the front of the car, from the airflow through the bay etc etc. If someone's ever analysed the airflow in all those areas, I've never seen the studies. Anyway, TSI's and/ or a vented headlamp cover will definitely improve things, as you say.
    Will ANY of it make you feel any difference in performance, or result in anything more than infinitesimal gains or losses of power?
    Of course not! :-)
    Great channel, man, great mods and I'm thoroughly enjoying what you do to your Mazda. You have already inspired me to go LED with my interior lights and number-plate lights, so keep up the good work, and please keep the mods and videos coming!

    • @MiataMods

    • @MiataMods
      @MiataMods  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Joseph, I don’t think it’s possible to make a air intake like this with a strut brace installed.. your best option is to sell the strut brace so you have enough room to build your own intake 😉

    • @josephwakefield5779

      @MiataMods  Před 6 lety +1

      If you have a '94 Miata / MX5 or younger you will have a MAF instead of a AFM which is a bit smaller. It will give you some more options on how to route your air intake
