Wow, I didn't expect it to make such an audible difference.
They really do especially on 4 cyl engines
You're literally teaching me how to restore my 91 miata that I bought in 1999. She's getting a FULL overhaul plus mods. Thanks for everything : ) 👍👍
Glad to hear that! Wow you had the car for almost 20 years now? That’s really cool!
Yay, a new video. I'm always stunned how rust-free and clean your Miata is.
Haha thanks man! Yeah she looks quite good for her age ☺️
Dude it’s 3 am and I’m not signed into CZcams on my phone, but I had to sign in so I could give this video a like. Out of all the videos I’ve seen you’ve broken it down the most and made it easy to find and understand. Thank you so much!
Thanks but.. if you can leave a message in YT you can give a like as well right? 😝😝
This video is really well made! The circles and zooming in makes it so much easier to see what you're doing!
Thanks Mik!
Hey, I just bought a 97 miata , I really like your how to videos keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words man! Welcome to the Miata community!
I do like that deep induction sound... probably will try this out myself. Thank you!
You really should Brice, it sounds so badass!
wow the difference in sound is much bigger than i was expecting! Nice ;-)
And the camera doesn't do it justice! It sounds even better in real life!
I can imagine...ive installed CAI on some other cars before and the difference really is noticeable!
I love those memes in between... Especialy with dropping the bolt and when you revved it with the new filter and his head went bigger.. hahahaha small details like that make the video enjoyable
Haha thanks dude! I used a bit less meme's in this video to keep it a bit more professional but I will never stop using them hehe 😆
@@MiataMods love the video and the quality! what are you recording with?
Samm Dijks facts
Vanaf nu : 100 procent mijn favoriete CZcams kanaal. Altijd goede instructies!
Wauw bedankt voor het compliment man!
Worth the wait thank you for making such easy to follow along videos.
No problem! Good to hear man 👌
Great Miata content man! I love watching your videos!
Thanks man 👍
Looks great and sounds good! You keep giving me things to do to my wife's Miata.
Thanks for the video.
No problem Bruce! Hope your wife likes it as much as we do 😉
I meant to thank you for the great tip about cutting the hose using the clamp as a guide. Very clever.
No problem!
Perfect level of improvement. And very good and useful conclusions.
Thanks Björn!
Very good video, thanks! This is gonna help loads of people out for sure. I'm still using the airbox at the moment so will have to try this soon :-)
Thanks for the kind words man!
Awesome video! I loved the little meme faces you added in, to me the sound after the cold Intake is installed it sounds like a 4AGE from an AE86
Haha thanks! It does sound great! 👍
Thanks for the great video. i will be doing this as my first mod. just got the car and i love it.
Cool, good luck!
Love these videos. I would love to take my 97 1.8 NA over to the Netherlands some time from Ireland as my partner's family lives there. Maybe I'll be sporting a cold air intake like this when I get round to it! Keep it up :)
I hope you do! That would be an awesome roadtrip for sure!
Soo clean look, love it!
I lovd this guy! All his stuff is awesome and DIY
Love you too Rob ❤️
@@MiataMods Thank you, means coming from a fellow Miata DIY-er :D
Like you said, I bet it didn't make your Miata THAT much faster at all. However, the sound difference is INCREDIBLE! It went from sounding like a stock 4 banger grocery getter (basically just like my Miata sounds) to something that actually some real grunt to it. Great job with the tutorial video. Earned a sub from me bud. Keep up the good work! I also like your stickers too btw. I might just snag one off of you!
Thanks! You have a nice CZcams channel too! Good luck 👍
@@MiataMods Of course, and thank you very much for checking it out! I really appreciate it. Good luck to you as well sir!
It may be a good future mod to extend the heat shield to protect the brake master cylinder, makes you track-ready that way and reduces risk of fires like the one that happened to AdamLZ
Yeah that's a great idea! I'm thinking of doing a '2.0 version' which is wider and also a little bit taller with a rubber piece on top so it has a good seal against the hood. Thanks!
love these video's, hope to do these kind of things myself. Only thing that stops me from doing it is money, As a student in Belgium its very expensive to own a car. Insurance is very high, even for an mx5. One day i'll be able to do this and i can't wait for that moment to come. :)
Well you are in luck, this a cheap mod that is pretty easy to do ☺️
Very nice video with great editing! Very clear presentation, good fun and excellent English (veel beter dan mijn Nederlands - dank U Google!). Very enjoyable! Rob (in Switzerland)
Thank you Rob from Switzerland 🇨🇭☺️
Hey cool. I just instaled & rerouted my cold air intake on my 99 miata love the new roar sound only problem is to get the roar sound & sound bad ass u have to get more into the throttle which uses more fuel lol but its worth it I found my new u tube video now u got me wanting to do more the M flush is next only hear the lifter ticking when. I floor it so going to try it out
Thanks for your comment Russell!
My favorite new CZcams channel
Thanks for the compliment man! Are you by any chance related to Lewis Hamilton? 😉
Yeah he's my slow driving brother😁
Nice videos bro. Keep up the hard work
Thanks man!
Try trimming one side of the U shorter to accommodate the difference.
I'm sure a cleaner look will be achieved.
And maybe a slight/slight powergain may be achieved on the butt dyno.
Thanks❤
Sweet Miata very well done mod
Its so satisfying hearing the engine get throaty being able to breathe more air. It never gets old. But we do need to take care of our own bodies and stop polluting the air as we can keep breathing deep throaty breathes. Not like darth vader but you know what I mean. Most of you anyways.
Yeah I still love the sound it makes!
thanks for the before and after audio!
No problem man. Pretty nice difference right?
Nice video! Keep up the great work:)
Thanks man!
Great video. On my list of things to do.
Alright well good luck and if you have any questions let me know 👌
My understanding is that it will note affect power by much at all... I then i heard the sound change! I would happily lose a HP or two for that sound.
I know right! It sounds awesome!
Lol the little meme when you’re revving the car 😂 but you should definitely sell the mounts! Maybe $65?
Sounds fantastic!
Thank you so much for all of your content! I recently purchased a 1995 Miata and I've been using your videos to help with my DIY improvements! Do you have a new link for the Heat shield / mounting bracket measurements? The current link in the description is broken
No problem! I see the link is not working, thanks for notifying me! I’ll fix the link and will reply again when it’s usable again! Thanks for the kind words by the way! 😌
Tof filmpje weer! Ga zo door!
Dank je Miata fan! Leuke gebruikersnaam 😆
Haha dank je, kan er ook niks aan doen dat ik fan ben ;)
awesome difference. really useful additional info'
Sure man, no problem 👍
It has a deeper sounding note, I like.
Exactly, it sounds really good!
@miatamods sounds nice man. Im not sure how necessary it would be but have you thought about getting one of those vented headlight covers?
Yes I certainly have! I'm interested in the tsi's from Jass Performance, so cold air can enter the engine bay! I may even make a air duct then!
Nice work! I will be installing this air intake on my best friend's '93 Miata. Where did you get the 75mm aluminum connectors? Thx
I got it from a local supplier but I found out that they also sell these (a lot cheaper) in China on sites like aliexpress.com.
Hi miatamods!! I like this cool mod!! Sounds great and I'll do the same to my '90 na, the only doubt I have is how can this affect to the AFM in vertical position, don't you think the bearings of the fan could be damaged?? How long are u using it?? Any problems??
Thanks
Hey man, thanks for the compliment! The AFM does not have a fan or bearings in it. It only has a flap inside that opens and closes and the AFM measures the position of this flap to calculate the airflow. I guess you could say that gravity can have a small effect on this system but I I haven't had any problems so I guess it's fine.
anyone else know where to get 75mm hose joiners, I cant find any online and the home depot near me doesn't have it.
Hey man love your videos and how at home friendly they are!! Do you know of any issues with messing with the air fuel ration by adding the filter and the kinks in tubing?
I've had this setup for 7 years now and no problems what so ever so I would say no 😄
Nice. I will have to try this on my 1.8 95
I'm pretty sure it's the same steps for a 1.8. You should definitely do this mod, it sounds fantastic! ☺️
Fantastic. You really got me thinking I should build one myself. The pre-build are just too expensive or doesn't meet my expactations. Thanks
No worries man, good luck with building your own! Much more satisfying to build one yourself!
Your buddy who told you not to rotate the mass airflow sensor was thinking of the old mass air meters like on the Toyota’s..... they had a mechanical flapper door inside with a potentiometer mounted on the end... those need to be mounted right side up. Your Miata has a fully electronic airflow meter
Well Brian, I hate to break it to you but mine has a mechanical flapper too 😅 only the newer NA’s have a fully electronic one
Looking at doing this to my Miata, could I get a rough measurement of how long and wide the heat shield is? Awesome video as well, so professional and such a clean install!
Thanks! Check out the video description for the link to the document with all the measurements!
Echt bruut! Klinkt super Nice! 😁
Ja toch? ☺️
Here's a little tip for you. Use a nut driver to tighten the hose clamps. It is much easier to tighten them without the slippage you get from a screwdriver.
Great advice, thanks!
What size 180° silicone hose would you recommend?
I’d like to buy one, and make as little cuts as possible, to use as little connectors as possible.
Thanks
Funny with CZcamss new advert placement below the video, how there are intake kits for MX5's for sale from £111 to £430. While showing a video of a DIY cheap mod
Haha really? 430 pounds, wow.. CZcams u funny
Very informative video! Good work. Where did you purchase the aluminium connectors?
From a local shop. Where are you from? United States? If so, just search for a 75mm / 3inch aluminum hose connector on Ebay
Great video!! can you please share again the Heat shield / mounting bracket measurements Pleaseeee
Link should be fixed now! Can you check?
Great mod! I'll be doing something similar myself. Predictably, people are bashing it of course, to which I would say: it may add or lose 1% or 2 % or 3% of power at various points in the rev range. So what? You will never, ever feel a 1%, 2%or 3% difference in performance while you're driving.
Miata's are all about how they feel to drive, NOT ultimate performance- and that feel-factor was one of Mazda's key design priorities. Sound is a huge factor in that. If your Miata sounds nice, it will feel better to drive.
Mine has felt way better, and is far more fun to drive, since I fitted an aftermarket exhaust system. Is it any faster? I doubt it. Does it sound nicer? Hell yeah! Any performance gains or losses from a filter arrangement like this will be so negligible as to be imperceptible, but it will transform the way the car FEELS to drive, and that's what Miatas are all about.
As for cold air/ hot air...it's as far away from the hot exhaust as it can get, and without detailed studies of airflow under Miata bonnets, that's good enough. The stock box draws air from a tiny gap between the bonnet and fender, this draws it from the gap between the headlamp, fender and bonnet, from the front of the car, from the airflow through the bay etc etc. If someone's ever analysed the airflow in all those areas, I've never seen the studies. Anyway, TSI's and/ or a vented headlamp cover will definitely improve things, as you say.
Will ANY of it make you feel any difference in performance, or result in anything more than infinitesimal gains or losses of power?
Of course not! :-)
Great channel, man, great mods and I'm thoroughly enjoying what you do to your Mazda. You have already inspired me to go LED with my interior lights and number-plate lights, so keep up the good work, and please keep the mods and videos coming!
You are totally right! Thanks for sharing your point of view!
Well, I built it according to your plans, I've just finished putting it in the car, and it all works great! Sounds good, took it for a run, and everything fine so far :-) I'm pretty certain the throttle response is definitely better, but that may be because the old panel filter that I removed was filthy! :-)
That's great! Another MiataMods Air Intake on the streets, awesome!
I posted a pic of it in the comments on your fb page :-)
Please don't tell me you've stopped making videos, this was genuinely my favourite 'working on mx5' video channel on CZcams. I hope all is okay and I hope to see you again in another video! 💙
Hello, this is the mommy of Mr MiataMods. I'm sorry to inform you that he died during an overtake. The car had so little horsepower it's really slow as fuck. It took too long to overtake a car and he crashed.
Haha no just kidding! Had a few things in my personal life that needed attention but I will be making new videos next year!
@@MiataMods 🎉🎉🎉🎉✌🏼💙
Hey mate!!! I am that josh_miata!! I just say that I read somewhere, like nutz or miataturbo.net
I dont really matter on this as I am running mafless, with me221.
That is the best mod, all this fantasy things are nice when you open the bonnet at a meet, but not between technicians.
Also, appart from that your car is running fine, the mk1 1.6 maf is "gate" maf, if a japanese engineer designed and decided a position, I put in doubt that you make it better than them.
But anyway cool mod and merry xmas dude, enjoy that nice toy!
It's not a performance mod, I'm just having some fun. sounds great tho ;-)
know any links for a mounting bracket for the MAF that isnt necessarily a heat shield as well?
Not that I’m aware of
Hello, what is the distance from centre to centre of that silicone U bend you got please.
Check out the video description for a link to the document with all the measurements!
Nice job!
Thanks man!
@MiataMods, do you have links to the Silicone hoses and aluminum connectors?
I do not, I got them at a local store
Hi! Love your videos and your work 🙏🏻
Where did you get the adapter plate?
I got it from Ebay
dyam i want miata so bad right now just because of this video
Do it my man!
Hey miatamods, may i ask that where do you get the connector from?
You mean the adapter plate for the AFM? The tools and parts you need for this job are in the video description.
hey great videos. are you comming back?
im done for already install they was fit my budget thanks u
No problem!
Would you be able to help me with making an air intake for 2014 miata?
Thanks
Do you have any specific questions?
where did you get the afm gasket from? Thanks!
Just a local store which sells MX5/Miata parts
For some reason, I thought yours was a 1.8...not sure why...doesn't really matter, lol. Anyways, that mod looks great and sounds even better...job well done! Now you can get a scooped headlight cover to ram air into your filter for even more HP...that you probably won't feel...lol.
Haha yeah that's the plan! Maybe get some tsi's from Jass Performance to let the cold air enter the engine bay!
Hey doesn't the afm sensor be in the original (horizontal) position becouse of the flap inside ?
Yeah I had the same thought but I figured why not try it. It's been three years and no issues yet so I guess it's not a big deal
its looks really really great , i only see 1 problem , i run a Front top strut bar so it wouldnt fit :/ , but this looks really clean and cheap because for mk1's you see cold air intakes above 150 €
Thanks for the compliment! You are right, unfortunately you can't fit this if you have a strut brace.. 😔
Darn it, now I want to do this too. I've got cruise control so I'd have to ditch that to make room. It doesn't work anyway. :)
Well Frank, sounds like you got a nice project for the weekend! Removing the cruise control and making a cold air intake with heat shield ☺️
Where did you get that adapter plate from? I'm definitely going to do this!!
Just Google ‘Miata AFM adapter plate’ and you will find what you need. You can get it on eBay for less than 10 bucks
Will I need an adaptor plate be necessary for a 1.8 model with a MAF as opposed to an AFM?
I don't know if it's a dumb question but does it fit an nbfl?
It should if you don’t have a strut brace. Keep in mind that your MAF is smaller so you will need a somewhat different type of mounting hardware
Awesome video man! Only question is I have a strut tower bar, the intake would be in the way of that, if you install one in the future id love a video on how you moved the intake for the tower bar to be installed correctly
Hey Joseph, I don’t think it’s possible to make a air intake like this with a strut brace installed.. your best option is to sell the strut brace so you have enough room to build your own intake 😉
good answer haha Ill do something of the sort, or figure out how to push the pod filter down to the front left tire, near bumper area!
If you have a '94 Miata / MX5 or younger you will have a MAF instead of a AFM which is a bit smaller. It will give you some more options on how to route your air intake
While I'm not sure it's a huge cost savings when you figure in the time, I love the details. I'm not sure a whole lot of folks have a sheet metal bender either, still it's pretty cool.
Thanks man 😊 A sheet metal bender makes the job a lot easier but you can also use a vice and a hammer and just bend the metal that way 👌
Where’s the best place to get the 75mm aluminum Connecter?
I got it from a local hardware shop but I can imagine it's sometimes hard to find. Mabye eBay or Amazon?
where did you buy the aluminum connectors from, is there any chance you have a link?
Hey Steven, it’s from a local seller called Rubbermagazijn. I think they only have a Dutch website.. if you google ‘Rubbermagazijn 75mm slangverbinder’ you will find what you need. Good luck mate!
Cheers mate! thanks for the info, keep it up with the great videos!
WTF man this sounds dope, I want this on my NBFL too! Is it mostly the same?
Do it! You can buy pre-made kits for an NBFL or you can create your on intake with my video and a little imagination! Good luck bro
Can I buy the shield/mountain bracket and adapter from you?
Unfortunately no, I don't sell it
The air flow meter is supposed to be mounted horizontal so gravity doesn't affect the flap
I thought so too but it's been like this for 5 years now and I haven't experienced any problems so I guess it's not a big deal
does it matter what type of metal the metal sheet is for the heat shield?
Not really, as long as it's strong and doesn't flex a lot
You should produce and sell the heat shields, I dont have the tools to make one but I'd buy one already made :)
Hey Henry, serious question, how much would you be willing to pay for it? Maybe this is indeed an interesting idea!
MiataMods I would also like to buy one do to the lack of tools to do it myself. I would be willing to pay somewhere around $30 USD. Contact me back if this is something you can do.
I did some research and the problem is that international shipping alone would cost me about $30 because of the size and weight.. So it was a nice idea, but with the added building costs I would never brake even, let alone make a profit. So I guess you have to build one on your own guys :-)
I mean, even if its $60 shipped I wouldn't mind.
honestly i’d purchase one also
I cant find the 75mm aluminum connectors anywhere? please help
Here are some options:
- nl.aliexpress.com/item/Aluminum-Hose-Adapter-Tube-Joiner-Pipe-Coupler-Connector-76mm-3-Inch-L-76mm/32830614820.html

thank you luv u
Love you too
@MiataMods Where did you get the AFM adapter plate?
Hey André, check out the video description! I've added a link to the product on Ebay! It's just $8,50 so it's pretty cheap!
Thanks for the info mate.
Your channel is awesome. Keep the good job!!! Cheers From Portugal :D
Wouldn't rotating the afm give a different airflow reading?
Check out 14:07 in the video
Hey bro ia their a link for 90 degree 76 mm silicone hoses
I got them from a local shop so you can do the same or order them online on eBay or even AliExpress
where did you buy the silicone hose
Local seller. Ebay, Amazon and even Aliexpress should sell these hoses
I cant open link about heat shield... something about "pirvat things". Can someone help ? Im form Poland, and maybe that's a problem. IDK...
Try this link: 84.107.99.16/files/heatshield-mountingbracketmeasurements.pdf
Can anyone help me find not overpriced silicone tubes for the intake ??? Thanks
Would be smart to state your location
The AFM on a mk2 is far less restrictive. Might be a good swap if possible
It is, but you can’t just swap those, you will need to change the ECU and the wiring harness, that’s way too much of an hassle
@@MiataMods I see
Where can I found that square to circle adapter? Or did you build it ?
It’s called a AFM adapter plate. Check out the video description for a link to the item
@@MiataMods Thanks for the reply! i coulnt find any silicone hoses or the adapter here in México, i need to make a road trip to california so i can build my own ;(
Alright man, good luck with the project!
How can i make it if i got front strut bar ?
Yeaaahhh.. that’s really difficult.. depends on how much room you have around the strut tower.. maybe use a smaller rubber hose and a bigger bent?
Ive heard cold air intakes add horse power. With that being said how much horse power do you think you gained from this mod?
If I had to guess, 0 hp 😆
@@MiataMods i dont understand, people have been giving me mixed responses. From what ive heard it decreases air temperature intake which is more dense in oxygen than warmer air, causing the engine to recieve "more oxygen". Could you elaborate further on your opinion?
Does this improvement you've made work in a healthy way?
If you consider smiling healthy then yes
Does this really do anything other than making the car louder?
Yes, it looks cool
It's almost prooven that it sound better but you loose some of the lower RPM power in return of gaining higher RPM power (less niutonometers but more max speed). I have a plan of doing some dyno tests before and after such change and compare results.
Send me an e-mail if you have those dyno results!
@@MiataMods sure I will but I suppose it will happen in a couple of months as it's winter time and I'm not planning on using my mx5 in salty environment ;)
hi what year is your mx5 and is it the eunos ? going to build my own cold air intake aswell
Hey Tyler, my MX5 is from 1993 and it's not a eunos, just a standard MX5. Good luck with the build!
thanks
Does it fit on all years from the NA's i have 95😄
It does, the only difference is that you have a smaller MAF so you need to make some small changes to my instructions
Won't that air filter get wet during the rain?
Why would you think that?
