How do we overcome our fears? Contrary to popular belief, Lily Martin says you can’t. At a young age, she had to face one of her worst fears: needles. Rather than overcoming her fear, Lily learned how to cope with it by hacking her amygdala. In this TED Talk, she explains how you can, too. Lily Martin is a sophomore at Saint Andrew’s School. She is a driven student who especially enjoys learning about chemistry, artificial intelligence, and the stock market. Lily gave this talk in hopes of helping others gain a better understanding of the scientific aspects of why we have fears and what we can do to cope with them. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Wonderful speech. She faced down the fear of public speaking, to tell the story of her overcoming the fear of needles, to speak to the topic of fear itself.
I think she was nervous during this speech
Listen young lady you brought profound awareness to this 57 year old lady LOL! The ending when you spoke of Batman was astounding to me and I LOVE your concept of how we don't overcome fear we just learn how to face it and work through it in spite of it made so much sense to me! I've never heard it said like that and it makes so much more to me than trying to work hard to overcome something we can't because that wastes a whole lot of time!! What you just stated I'm going to do to face mine and just the thought of doing it your way brings immediate understanding and comfort so thank you so very much for your enlightenment!!!
Rodrigo, here, coping with anxiety disorder. You're talk hit a nerve. You made a mark. You helped out. Thank you.
When I was eight years old I was attacked by a dog, this accident planted fear in me for the rest of my life, now when I see a loose dog my heart beats harder and louder, it gets even worse if the dog starts to bark at me, at this moment my body will shake. guess I will do just like batman and start facing my fear by adopting a puppy; I think it will be impossible to fear a dog you raised yourself.
she seemed just slightly inexperienced with such presentations but she's obviously young and I figured still a college student or something like that, this isn't a criticism in any way though and it actually seems fitting; she shows maturity, determination to pass on important information and willingness to learn
Besides learning, to accept and face your fears. You can also go one step further, which is to accept the pain (in regards to fear of needles).
Excellent video. She is talking about gradual exposure. Having a therapist trained in treating anxiety and trauma can help!
Hey out there! Do you know fear and excitement has same hormones state level? Only difference is, in fear You think you better step back. And in excitement you think you better step forward. So which one thought you like to choose ? Being excited or being feared?...
This is the first time I'm watching ted talk this much early
♡ this, exposure to the fear over and over again helps me
Way to go girl. Thanks for sharing your fear and how you dealt with it. Very Informative.

Wow. An amazing video once again!
This was a great talk! Lots of good and complete information. It was so good and informative that I listened to it twice and took very detailed notes. Great job! Thank you!! 👍👏👏👏
Great video.Thanks so much
the more face your fear the lesser the effect of fear will be upon the body with each time you face it. at some point your brain will become immune to it
