- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he believes Israel will go into Rafah in the next few days. He told a conference in Saudi Arabia, an Israeli assault on Gaza's southernmost city could force much of the population to flee the territory, and the only country that can stop it is the US.

Why have you still not bothered to learn about what drove Hamas to their reprehensible, but desperate action, starting fifty years before Hamas even existed? Why are you not blaming Netanyahu, and the other Zionist Extremists who bolstered and called for support for Hamas for years, because they hoped Hamas would divide Palestinian loyalties and prevent the PLO, who supported and signed the Oslo Accords, from beingconsidered to represent a united Palestine? The Zionists have, for decades, done all they can to divide Palestine into isolated sections, with the Settlements dividing up the West Bank, the 17 year seige of Gaza and oppressive travel restrictions in the other territories, cutting off people from their families. They want the land, "from the Nile to the Euphrates" (for a start) to be entirely Israel, and to do that they had to do all they could to rob Palestinians of a recognisably cohesive identity.
After the disengagement, Israel refused to implement the conditions agreed in the peace negotiations after the '67 War, when they had seized Gaza from Egypt (who had never annexed it, since they wanted the Palestinians to run it as soon as they were able). They refused free access between Gaza and the West Bank, kept control of Gazan airspace and waters and the right to carry out incursions for policing puposes, among others, while steadily destroying the valuable Gazan agricultural export trade. Even Gazan babies had to be registered with the Israeli Authorities, who refused to register them as Palestinians.
The 17 year seige and blockade brought destitution to the majority of the Gazans, the majority of whom were, or were descended from, refugees from Israeli forced expulsions razing of Palestinian villages for the building of illegal, extremist, Israeli settlements, or violence elsewhere. Israeli airstrikes on civilian targets such as housing, refugee camps and schools, and on essential civilian infrastructure, left Gazans dependent on Israel allowing food, medicines, water trucks, fuel and electricity into Gaza, since the blockade had stopped seeds and other imports essential for agriculture, destroyed the water treatment facilities so over 80% of water was contaminated, severely damaged the power plant, which could only be partially repaired since essential parts were banned and needed oil, which Israel severely resticted.
The strikes also killed more than 7,000 civilians and maimed around the same number. Prosthetics and wheelchairs for those with multiple amputations were extremely hard to obtain. Many thousands more died because Israel denied people access to appointments outside Gaza for essential specialised medical treatment. Huge numbers of Gazan children were officially recognised by international charities, including the UN, as malnourished and described as wasted.
Israel was committing Genocide before Oct 7, it just took that desperate act before most of the World noticed, though even as a child in the 1970s I was able to see what was going on, even if I didn't understand why, because there were documentaries, articles, reports by civil rights groups, even outraged mainstream news reports when Israelis would kill a foreign (ie British or US) filmaker, reporter or protestor trying to prevent the demolition of family homes.

It is all beyond tragic. Never has the state of Palestine seemed so far away and shame upon the United Nations for playing the Devil's Advocate, giving "Palestine" recognition, when there is no land to place the state upon. For years, the UN has given these poor Egypto-Arab Gazans false hope, which has simply raised the level of Gazan and Hamas violence , as we are currently witnessing around the world.

I haven't found a consistent number about how many people HAVE been displaced in Israel.

In terms of dead for dead, Gaza's Palestinians have paid a heavy price for the chosen atrocities committed by a few Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters on those they killed on that Oct day. I know that Hamas doesn't care for or respect that sacrifice they imposed unasked for upon their own people. They would gladly throw every Palestinian under the bus if it meant their goals vis a vis Israel were achieved. All that notwithstanding, does not absolve Israel of it's crimes towards the Palestinian people since the founding of Israel. In fact it deepens their responsibility towards those innocent of anything who have paid wither lives for the crimes of others. Israel, whether it cares to acknowledge the fact or not has become itself another nation guilty of atrocity. Israel does not deserve the Yod Veshem Memorial to the Holocaust, seeing as they are so busily engaged in creating their own Shoah, their own Holocaust of another people.
