3,200 for a knife and it doesn’t even self-retract.
And it’s obnoxiously big, my UTX-85 is a great size and gets the job done, I don’t need a bigass 4 inch blade
That thing has nothing in it that justifies the price!
A $30 Timex watch has more complex precision engineering than that pos.
No shit what a joke
Only a dumb idiot would pay that much for a knife.
Just because you can't afford it, you don't have to hate
For $3200 I can walk around with a backpack full of guns lol
Tight ass
What like 5-6 good quality guns
@@calebnation7797 yup, and a small backpack😅
You can literally arm your whole family with quality rifles like AR15 from SW or Springfield lol

If you're gonna get a single action why not just get a regular folding knife?
No kidding, check out the Kershaw line - you can open them with your finger and they lock REALLY well!
its about the action man, any chinese OTF can spring open, now can every knife withstand the locking mechanism of a microtech halo? i think not
EXACTLY! What's the point of a single action knife? Kinda' like a single shot concealed handgun.

A wristwatch, pen, a torch and a knife has always been my everyday carry since I was 15 years old. I can't count how many times a good, sharp knife has saved my day. I grew up in the Philippines and there wasn't a lot of places to shop for beautiful knives like these. All i had was a couple balisongs from Batangas and a few pocket knives with cheap steels. Now that I'm in Canada, I was hoping to carry on my love for knives and to level up my collection. But then I found out about the stupid knife laws here. I found this amazing channel in search of a knife that's legal in Canada. I don't know if you can tell me what knives are considered 'legal' that can cross the border, cause every time I watch your videos, I'm dying to get my hands on the knives you feature. This has turned into a rant. Anyway, great contents guys. More power to you. Love Blade HQ!

Single action otf is like a bolt action rifle imo.
bbnguyen92 Imagine a knife that is like the lower of a bolt action rifle. Pull the trigger and the blade goes out. Pull the bolt back and it recharges. It’d be cool but not practical
Seems like they are about the getting the knife out and ready to go. Looks liek they still function the same to deploy, so good for protection, but very inconvenient if this is the only knife you carry.
more like a straight pull
@Random Name they are outdated in a world of self loading rifles
@Random Name a bolt action rifle in combat against pretty much any self loading rifle is totally obsolete. You cannot fight with a bolt action anymore.
Im so glad you guys reviewed both the ultratech and the phaeton. I just won both in raffles spent $40 on the both combined!!!
Lucky bastard!!! Very nice
@@mikey69lover50 you stole the words right from my brain🤣
i have always and will always carry a lightning otf. as a mechanic there are a ton of times when i need a blade while one hand is busy, its cheap enough where i can buy 4 and not cry when i break a tip off or inevitably give one away to someone who thinks its just awesome. they are rugged and hold up well to abuse too. im not a knife addict like most of you guys, but this is one that i wont go without.
I carry a Ravencrest Tactical for the exact same reason! I like the I can replace the blade for cheap (picked up a half dozen during one of their big sales for $15 apiece!). I'll have to check out Lightning OTFs, never heard of them.
Hey man. The lightening is definitely not something I would buy (don’t like OTF in general) but if you found something you like and works that’s sick dude. Always great to hear about people’s blades that have served them well. Awesome reading your post.
Just moved to New Hampshire from California. Ive always wanted to own cool knifes and guns and now i can!
As a native Californian. You made the right move. Cheers 🍻
Bob Smith lol
Gryphon aha! I moved to Seoul from Missouri couple years ago, you have to get a licence and get background checked to legally own a folding knife that is longer than 2.3 inches god dang 😂😂😂😂
MrBanditoMan they are afraid that people will stab someone with a two inched knife 😂😂😂😂 screw them Im getting one anyways
MrBanditoMan speaking of which, today is the day that my fox 599 comes man 🤣🤣 I cant wait
9:40 I've got one of those and that spring ting started to drive me crazy after awhile, lol. So I opened it up and put a dab of grease on the spring to dampen it. Solid as a rock now with no vibrating springs :)
There isn't a spring for each direction, that wouldn't work because you'd have to have one spring able to over power the other in each direction. Obviously can't have that work both ways.
There are two springs, but in parallel for added oomph.
The way it works is there is a sliding frame that stretches the spring in whatever direction you want it to go and when it reaches a strong enough pull, it reaches and trips a lever to allow the blade to slide.
There is just one spring in the Ultratech, but you are correct in that the spring(s) is/are not opposing, as misstated in the video; "one in each direction." Actually, knife guys should know the difference. This is somewhat akin to an automobile expert stating that a Ford Focus has two engines, one to go forward and one for reverse. The D/A Microtech OTF's with the 'top' buttons (which is all of them, up to the new Dirac) have the spring that's suspended on a carrier and the carrier has a cam in front and in back. The spring has two hooks; there's a hook on the front and one on the back end. As the firing button slides the carrier, the spring tension increases while at the same time the cam on the carrier depresses a spring-loaded leaf lock in the knife's frame. There are two locks, one on the front at the top, and one on the rear at the bottom. When it's sufficiently depressed enough to clear the blade, the lock releases the blade, the blade is propelled by the pre-tensioned spring via one of the hooks, on either the front of the spring, or the one on the back (on the other end of the spring), depending on which direction the firing button is travelling. It's kind of like the catapult that launches aircraft off of an aircraft carrier.
Around 1995 I started collecting well made 'no name' auto knives with ATS-34 blades packaged in blue plastic mesh with a parachute logo on the steel. These were the first coil spring autos I'd seen, and while somewhat expensive, the quality was far better than other auto knives being produced back then. One day my dealer showed me a large mat grey OTF from this maker that was twice the money of his other already pricey knives. It was the first truly functional OTF I'd seen, and too cool to resist, so I added one to my collection. Several years later I found out it was Robbie Dalton that had been making these knives, and this OTF was called the Cupid. I still have two of his folders, as well as the Cupid. These knifes have all been stored with the blades deployed so as to be easy on the springs, never carried, and only opened a few times to show friends, so I had to check out your video to see what has been happening in the world of OTF knives since then. Wow, a great selection, and pretty reasonably priced, other than the dead-lock. Thanks!
getting into knives after finding a phaeton 4600 on the ground while walking the strip, pretty cool.
No fair!!
I was literally searching for an OTF comparison video a couple days ago, it's like you guys read my freakin' mind!
The AKC F-16 segment at the 9:00 mark... a collision of "all you need" vs. salesmen awkwardly struggle to save face whilst pushing a $300 knife. Zack keeping it real. :D
Thank you for the video guys!!! Love your enthusiasm for what you do! Great video not too long with just enough info to assist in what knives I will add to my collection!
What a cool video. Years ago I owned a 46.6 Bertam charter boat in Key West and a great guy named Frank gave me a Stratofighter side opening knife that I still carry every day now working as an armed guard at a weed store. It isn't automatic but it is absolutely excellent and indestructible. Not sure if they make them anymore. Subbed!
I have one of the MicroTech Storm Trooper series and just picked up the Benchmade Infidel. The MicroTech has a heavier trigger and more snap while the Benchmade feels lighter. Both are razor sharp but of the two I prefer the Infidel as it feels better in my hand.
lightning otf, hands down best bang for the buck. ive used mine HEAVILY for the past 3 years w/ no hiccups
Can you buy these on Amazon?
11:03 mark. I carry the S&W OTF and love it. I wish to note that you (or at least I) can retract it with one hand. I place the butt on my palm with my thumb on the reset slide. As I draw the slide back I tilt my hand down (seems to give me more distance) and the blade locks easily.
Great video guys! Fun back and forth. I came looking for the Raven Crest Tactical OTF, but I really enjoyed seeing all these different options!
Wow that deadlock looks sick....anddd it's $1,100
when he says "whatttttt isssss uppppp guysssss" I always feel like hes gonna say "dramaaaaaas alert nationnnn I'm your host killerrrrr keemstarrrrrrrr"
I bought a benchmade infidel military/le OD green from these guys. Great knife and blade locks up very tight. Super sharp D2 steel outta the box. Would recommend to anyone wanting an OTF. Thanks blade hq
Just purchased a Hawk Deadlock Auto, carbon fiber marbled handle, hardened stainless steel screws, titanium hardware and premium CPM 20CV sharpened double edge blade.
Can't wait to receive it this coming week.
the halo theme caught me off guard lol. you said halo 5 and i was like "haha halo 5" and then the song came on and i thought that was in my head!
$3000? Not even worth it.
no shit. no knife is. it's for stupid people with too much money who like to brag about how much they paid for something.
This is a knife a rich business man buys his boss for Christmas, that's about it. the annoying part of the design aside from 400 year old bamboo (wow so rare, bamboo!) is the fact that the entire advantage to an OTF is it can be double edged, if its single edged, it can be a side folder since the blade side is covered! at least put a saw blade on the back AMIRITE?
I'd probably lose it anyway :/

Didn't realize there were so many in the otf style. But I love that there are! Great styles here.
As an OTF fan, just found in my feed. I own the Halo V and no need to push the button to reset. Great content, always looking for alternatives to Microtech. Cheers.
They need to give the editor a raise!
2:40 who tf would spend 3 racks on a single action OTF💀🤦🏻♂️
David Gonzalez lol I spent 5 u ducking degenerate.
Big Chungus see there’s the knife aficionados and then there’s the retards.. guess which you fall into
All I know if I ever have an altercation with some idiot and they pull out a $5g knife. I'm pulling out my 400$ Glock. Then I guess I'll have a $5g knife.😏
Jerry Velasco, seriously... you could buy a glock for every room in your house and car for that price.
Big Chungus hahaha you got ripped off
I learned a valuable lesson about how to PROPERLY reset a blade back on track when I was 8 & ima share with u guys.. hold the handle right side up and allow the blade to retract back into the handle then flick ur wrist in an action as if ur trying to sling the blade out of the handle and wala instant reset without the danger of slicing ur finger off
That G&G Hawk Deadlock is absolutely awesome! The blade play is why I've never bought an otf. Hopefully more companies start following the Mad Scientist's.
I dropped my akc-f16 2 times in the water and it still fires flawlessly after 2 years of carrying it, for 50$ it’s a solid, yet simple, knife
Damn, they said $40, you paid $50, I got mine for $60, amazing knife.
Great OTF discussion, quite informative. Def going to have to go with the Deadlock, but for two grand I think I'll have to buy a DSA SA 58 OSW rifle 😁
Love this channel! I'm new here and have binge watched your channel. Great variety of knives and good insite and opinions. 🤘
What i love about the microtechs is the handle to blade ratio. The handle isn’t massive for a smaller blade
2:28 the Ultratech only has one spring for the blade, it just goes in both directions
Indeed. I saw the video where a knowledgeable guy opened his microtech up and clearly showed the spring and its parts along with clearly articulating how it all works while he uses the ultratech as a visual aid.
Really really want a Microtech. Always as a kid I wanted a Benchmade but my tastes have refined. Also Microtech charges premium prices, not inflated pretentious ones. Should we really have to pay 500-1000 for a benchmade otf. If they want to sell gold plated knives with artisan engraving for hose priced that's fine by me. I respect it as a work of art as an artist/designer myself. But the pragmatic ones (the tactical class denoted to police/military utilitarian application like the Infidel costs an exorbitant amount) The infidel (coolest looking one) has the activating mechanism it a far sillier place. I imagine most would switch their grip after firing it so you can hold it like you would a Microtech from the start. Benchmade has a Phaeton model (highly borrowing from Microtech in design) that has the activator in the same place. It is twice the price, like exactly and yet Microtech is universally agreed to be the best when it comes to OTFs. Along with the fact their brand integrity in the court ofpublic opinion is unwavering from what I've seen. Can't find a vid dogging on Microtechs easily. Opposite is true for Benchmades, a single youtube search will yield plenty: those with stupid complaints and those with valid ones. I've never owned either but I've followed Benchmade for like a decade, finding them via my early teen obsession of butterfly knives, youtube clearly told me the Bechmade model 42 was king of the hill and it looked the part in how it flipped and the testimonies that followed with its durability and lifespane. Fairly certain it is the most beloved knife they ever made. Only one I'd spend half a grand on. Too bad I can't.
Because unlike a single action OTF, it's the user who "charges" the spring. It's at rest both when deployed and retracted.
Anyone have the f-16?
How wiggly is the blade?
Can you actually open boxes and stuff with it or is it more of novelty?
Thanks
I really like ZT knives. My fave EDC is 0566BW w/ELMAX. I love it, light, perfect size, crazy cool steel; not hard to sharpen and holds an edge like no other.
I’ve carried an F-16 for a year and a half now and I’ve gotta say, I’ve dropped it in water about 6 times, dropped it on concrete numerous times, used hard edc, and it fires just as fast as it did when i bought ut
I love Damascus steel on any knife so that just makes the Deadlock that much better
Old Hickory makes a great ice pick for $5
Great video. Appreciate the good info. Just bought the S&W/M&P knife from you guys as a direct result of your video. Thanks again. (My first OTF knife btw).
First, let me thank you all for the wonderful content. I love your channel and company, and I hope that your good work continues. I have a question of curiosity regarding single vs double action OTF's. I'm trying to find thw advantage to the single action, and I can't. I've also never fired one. I wonder, just by the design of the single action, if the blade holds more 'thrust' when opening, all the way up to the 'stop', or the fully opened position. For example: The double won't push through a business card upon firing, because the spring only has tension for a short time. But, would a single action's spring 'push' for longer, possibly giving it more force until it's fully opened? Again, a question of curiosity.
severe lack of quality double action otf in the $75-$175 range, big hole in the market that could be filled
Cole F amen I would drop 200 on a double action if I could find a quality option 300 is just too much

There are some incredibly good OTF knives in that range but they're mostly Chinese clones. Check out Vespa knives on DHGate. I bought their latest Combat Troodon clone and for $160 its actually quite a bit nicer than a real one from Microtech.

Can u show the edc knife of everyone working at BHQ
yea, go around the building like conan obrian would and tell everyone to whip it out without giving them a heads up.

i like this idea! so let's be fair. you spent shot show asking all your interviewees what's in their pockets, now's the time to do another one asking all BHQ staff what's in their pockets as suggested by kingleone blader. that oughtta' be a great vid to watch!
That's a great idea!
not everyone carries a knife on them at work

I have the AKC F-16 and it is a great knife, I bought one for my buddy and he loves it too. It's a nice solid knife, $44.95 you can't go wrong with it.
Thank you sooooo much. Was watching this video in hopes of firguring out how to fix my knife.

I'll stick with my lightning otf, thank you very much.
Just ordered the AKC concord in black with a gold dagger style blade 👍👍👍 I can’t wait to see it, as soon as I saw it here I couldn’t pass the chance, the price is great and it’s from what I’ve been hearing a very solid blade 👍👍
I got a Microtech Ultratech Hellhound Apocalyptic from a friend, and it is the prototype, and the only one made.
Value of over $500.
It’s beautiful.
I wish this review answered questions that i have, like durability, could i stick it into some wood and it not break etc...
honest to god yes you can for microtech at least, there are torture test videos of people using them like a nail and hammering them through a 2x4 and then pulling them out and they are just fine.
Now equipped with all-new patent pending Podium jimping.
Bought a small Hellytec hellion from a coworker about a year ago and it's been a great knife with lots of use. It does come off track every now and then when I push it out. Would be my luck, for the lack of better words, fail to fire if I needed it in a life or death situation. But for 50 bucks, it's a box opening assassin at work.
My favorite still is the DKW Sandshark. I think the video testing it by stabbing a 50 gallon oil drum about 30 times and didn't effect it at all. It had a screw adjustment in case over long period the blade ever started to get play. But my carry since 2006 is a double edge red devil Scarab. Still has the original spring and works like a Patek Philippe.
I could buy a few guns for the price of some of these knives
I think there would be lucrative opening in the remake of vintage OTF knives. Say from the 1980's etc.
I'm late as hell but I just got my first otf knife that is the benchmade infidel. I got this knife for free and didn't realise how expensive it was lmfao. I stay out of town in a hotel for work a lot and I forgot my jacket there last week. So this week I asked if they have a lost and found and they did so the clerk gave me the key to the room to find my jacket and this was in the bottom of the box. I asked the clerk how long its been there and he said for a few months sink asked if I can have it and he said yes. I'm very happy with it and its fun to use. I also noticed that it only has very very minor blade play witch is awesome as well. Now I just got to figure out how to take it apart to clean it if I need to.
Thay should have had the Cobratec CTK-1 in medium as a good entry level OTF. I just picked one up and I'm not disappointed. Plenty of reviews to see for your self. My next one will be one that was not featured in this video. It's the Guardian Tactical Recon 40.
The infidel is one of the most outrageously priced knives ever
Bought one a few months ago, it won't retract all the way if I hold it upside down, very sluggish. I know I can send it in and they will fix it. But for a 400 dollar knife, I was disappointed.
Obviously, its a benchmade.
R Langer obviously
It just feels that it would pierce through my thighs with this kind of knives.
I think most of them rely on inertia to carry the blade all the way to the stop. I have a cheaper one that I tried against a toilet paper roll and it barely pierced two layers with a double edge dagger style blade. You might get a little puncture from the point but it can't stick into you or go in deeply. Besides, it takes some force to fire the switch. I've had more folders open in my pocket and cut my finger trying to put my hand in my pocket.
if a micro tech were to fire in your pocket it would almost definitely derail. it is a built in safety feature
You can fire a microtech into a piece of paper and it derails, they are not dangerous at all.
The blade would derail you could activate the knife in front of your candy and you would not get hurt
I have a few of these but I didn't expect to see the double action lighter. Mine is red. I also go mine s sharp as a scalpel. Its actually a nice little novelty OTF. My cat spilt a coca cola in it which sucks because I had just blue loc-toted all the screws. The best thing you to do with any knife you buy is to take each screw out one at a time and loc-tite each screw. Most every knife that I've had break is just from screws backing out and getting lost. Get a tiny precision screw driver b UK t set from Walmart for around 7$ (bits are hollow ground) and a little bottle of blue loc-tite and you will make your knife last damn near forever.
I looked away for a sec.... when I looked back.... It looked like a bunch of hot wheels on the table. Cool video, thank you!
I can't be the only person who is paranoid about OTF knives accidentally opening while in your pocket, can I? That's basically the only reason I haven't bought one yet.
They're designed so they don't fully extend and lock if they hit resistance when opening. Besides, they require a decent amount of force to open, especially double action.
Watching these guys flicking OTFs in and out repeatedly and waving their hands around in front of each other makes for an exciting video
Love the videos I’ve been watching for 4 or 5 years
I've had an OTF knife that looks exactly like your AKC Concorde but it is definitely steel and has a worn olive drab paint that has worn off mostly, maybe you could estimate it's age for me, there are no markings on the handle or blade at all. Great video you guys. Thanks a bunch.
WHY TF WOULD ANYONE WANT A SINGLE ACTION KNIFE LIKE THAT?!?!?!?!AM I MISSING SOMETHING?
Thanks 80s movies for making OTF's expensive.
When zack was talking about the akc f16 and said “reminds me of 15 year old zack skating around” I was like yep that’s an exact description of me I’m buying it
Lots of good info thanks ! I'm glad I saw your vid! I really don't like that single action infadel looking knife and I almost got one thinking it was double action!
So.... what's the BEST double action, OTF knife for UNDER $50.00? Preferably with BLACK polymer handles.
Not many for that price point I would just go with a ravencrest for a little over $100 and it comes with a lifetime warranty or you can just get the spare parts yourself but if anything ever goes wrong literally nothing will make the warranty go away so you will have a knife for life that is a great build
o.t.v.- out the van goh. double action ear cutting paint brush.
for me, living under prohibitive knife carry laws - an OTF was always impossible to obtain but most desirable.
i have a Guardfather copy, it is cool
I have had 2 paragons. Both were completely useless. Safeties failed two different ways, blade hit the handle on deployment, and machining was of low quality. Now I am a happy ultratech owner.
The guys making the Hawke Deadlock would make mint if they made the knives in the Microtech and Benchmade price range. $2000 ??? No way. I can buy a real nice handgun or rifle for that.
I got four sawed off shotguns for $2k. One for my wife, me, my best friend, and my best friends wife (we all live in the same house, different floors)
I could buy a frickin 308 for that price
That Deadlock is AWESOME!!!!
Sure it is. All hand made and machined. Lifetime warranty, and top materials. Carbon fiber handles and titanium frame and inlays. Special spring design to last over 200k cycles. No blade play at all thanks to a very special design and mechanism. Not to mention all the R&D that went into creating it. When most other “good” otfs out there like Microtech are $300 or more, and are no where close to the quality of the deadlock, not to mention they are made to order by hand in incredibly small batches because they don’t have the industrial capabilities to mass produce them, then you start to get the pricing. Its a very special and unique knife with top quality materials from some of the best knife designers of all time.
Evan Shaw still even the microtech way over priced. It’s people like you that drive that stupidly high ass priced market an keeps pushing some higher. Money in your pocket or not. At some prices it’s just fucking stupid
AKC Concord so far best budget OTF have every had. Had this OTF for over 5 yrs now with now problem. AKF f-16 fell apart first time deployed blade. As a woman Concord fits in my palm concealed which is important in self deference.
I just found this page. Great video. New follower. Keep up the good work.
Soon they'll be making fingerprint-activated OTFs.
For some of the prices "3000$😵" you'd think that was a feature already.😒
I would be all about that if the fingerprint reader was reliable and the battery life decent. I think the battery life would be the tricky part.
Need a UTX-70 in my life
i heard from microtech, they will begin making a small batch of utx-70's in a few weeks.
they just shipped out the new halo 6 to dealers this week!
(I think they will also bring back the regular troodon later this year, i think, not confirmed yet).
The schrade gen 2 and 3 are actually exteemely easy to take apart and maintain. Under 10 parts, every part has a different size and a different area. For the most part, you can dump gun oil or wd 40 down the rail and its gopd as new.
I have a cypher, 2 ultratechs, and a utx-85. My black ultratech is my favorite. But I like the stiffer button action on the cypher aside from it being quite hard to deploy.
wow just found your page , i love the otf's got a few old italian made ones but seems like these prices are really high . I would love that deadlock but cmon $2000 ? thats 4 Glocks , or one high end 1911 , or 2 decent ARs , compared to 1 knife .
Yeah and it doesn't even mean it's going to be quality I just means it's going to have a bunch of expensive crap put in it for no reason
Or a really cheap car
My heart goes to lighting otf
If the steel was worth a damn I would have gotten 5 more.
ELITELAX23 They are some great budget knives for sure.
ELITELAX23 hi
Love my Lightning. Comes sharp as hell too
I see your point but I guess on the other hand there is no metal on on any of those guns that is as high quality as some of your Bohler 390/690 and other particle steels.,
You made me buy the smith and Wesson while watching. Thanks for the reviews.
I’ve had most of the high end oft’s but this dead lock is sweet, would like to see MT pick up on this great step up!!!
"They feel like a $40 OTF" ...yes, they certainly do lol
Seriously guys $435 for a knife I rather buy a S&W M&P 9 and a $20 knife!!!
Good things cost money, you can buy $1 pens that writes or $100 fountain pens that feel like you are writing on a cloud, It just depends on how you justify things.
You can buy like ok quality ar15, $50 quality knife and whole fried chicken lol
Cool. Whats your point.
My 5 dollar handforged 7 inch knife would outlast any of these overly expensive SCAM knives.
I have the AKC F-16 Which I bought from Blade HQ and it cost me about 60 bucks about a week ago. But it does not make that ping sound when I open or close it. This one is in the dagger point style. My only complaint is the button should be textured. My thumb frequently slips off of it without deployment. This one has the 440A steel. For whatever that’s worth. Nice little knife.
Hey guys I’m actually stationed in mountain home ID and was looking for some cool OTF knives and this vid was super helpful so thank you
How long can you use a decent OTF before you see a decline in performance ?

I was looking for reviews on the Akc f16 as a daily carry and to think I almost missed out on that awesome ninja turtle green!!! I found a website that has 4 left! I’m thinking of taking off the black tape when I get it and replacing it with an orange grip tape for Michelangelo. Thanks for this video
