      I bought an Atomic Defender, a Titan, and a Lightning Elite for under $100 total. I've carried and used all of them for 1+ year as EDCs for work, in which I use them for opening tons of boxes and mail.
      I also fidget with them constantly.
      They have all had thousands of deployments and retractions, and they all still work just as well now as when I bought them.
      I will never buy another Microtech. They are simply a waste of money for ego and brand.
      I understand the FEELING and EMOTION of exclusive tribalism when you buy a super overpriced name brand thing like a Microtech, but I also have enough experience to understand that spending 5x the amount on a name brand buys you nothing except that name brand and the bragging rights for having spent a lot of money on it.
      Want a D/A OTF that functions fine for years with a lot of daily use? You're gonna be perfectly satisfied with a "budget" option like Lightning, Titan, Atomic, or AKC.

    I dunno... It looks like to me that unless you plan on doing something really stupid with your knife, a $30 clone will do anything you can reasonably expect a knife to do... and for a ton less money.
    It also looks like the clone makers could spend about $10 more on heat treating the lock parts and still produce a knife that keeps up with Microtech in this kind of test, again for hundreds less. ( Which points to Microtech and others overcharging for what you actually get. )
    But then maybe I'm crazy for expecting a knife to be just that, and not a wood chisel or a nail. * shrug*

    I have owned a real Microtech Halo V for 6 years now. I thought what the hell, let's buy a knock off and compare the two. I paid $100 for the knockoff. It came in a real Microtech box with real Microtech paperwork. I was blown away by the quality of this particular brand knockoff. EVERYTHING was spot on, the fit and finish, the hardware, and the action. When deployed the blade has virtually no play in it, don't know what steel the blade is made of but it took an edge, and has held it. My guess is like an Aus 8 or something similar. When you go to retract the blade, the slide has all the info on it that the original does. I was so impressed that I keep my REAL Halo V in the gun safe and play with the knockoff. It was such a faithful copy that I have even fooled other Microtech owners with it. So not all knockoffs are created equal. I think it was a Vespa.

I'm kinda doubting that but I'll see when it gets here. If it's hard to sharpen then you know. I'm basically buying this as a toy. Are people(soldiers) really taking these to war? I doubt it. I am a poor college student and I live in Europe where everything you get from USA is pretty much double the price you pay there. But since i am a knife maker and collector I appreciate the design and quality of the original. And I want to support the one who bust his head to come up with this design. So I only ate pasta with tomato sauce for 4 months in order to collect the money and in 2014 I bought my first real microtech. To this day 6 years later I have not regret it one bit. I know that the counterfeit if very good for the money but they don't have to spend money for research, for quality parts and American labour. I make knives I would want anyone to copy my designs for less $. In order for me to come up with one knife I have to break 2- 3 complete knives to test if the design is good enough. The copycats will just skip all this. Anyway I think that counterfeiting is just unacceptable wrong. The only way microtech can defeat them is to make a cheaper line in the company that are made in China. Like Byrd knives from Spyderco!

      Real microtech knives are well worth the money. I bought a knock off just to scratch the itch of wanting one and was immediately disappointed with the quality and reliability. I dug down deep in my pocket and bought the utx 85. When I received the knife I was worried I was going to regret spending that much money on a pocket knife. It was hard to see the value until I had it in my hand. I work in machining so I can appreciate the value of a real microtech. My utx and I have been inseparable since I bought it. I have actually had five people go out and buy one as a gift for someone after handling mine. I recommend them to people all the time. They are truly amazing knives and a must have for any one who is into hunting, EDC, and or collecting. Hell I've seen people who don't care for any of those things end up wanting one after handling mine. I am in no way affiliated with microtech or anyone for that matter. Save up and get the real thing. You won't regret it. Most people I see on CZcams have five or six decent quality knock offs. At fifty dollars or more a pop that is more than enough money to go out and get a full size ultratech. Another thing people forget about when scoffing at the price of a microtech is that when you buy the knife it is basically a piggy bank. You barely lose any money if you decide to sell one and if you get a rare color, blade, and hardware combination you can actually gain money in the long run. Buying a microtech is a good as buying any high end fire arm. It holds it's value and is worth being seen as an investment rather than a spontaneous purchase. Anyhow, I'm done. ✌️

      @frenchie98 Před 3 lety

      @@notgray88 sure, labor costs are much higher than in China. However most of the work is automated and done on assembly lines. That is why it's hard for me to justify price of $764.26 for Microtech Troodon Tanto. Most of Microtech knives cost way too much, e.g.
      Microtech Ultratech OTF D/E Automatic Knife. Price: $935.00
      or Microtech Combat Troodon Knife Price $1,150.00

    I have a few microtechs that were gifted to me when I left my Special Forces team and when I retired from the Army. They are beautiful works of art. With the custom engraving, they are more sentimental and collector items for me than anything else. I wouldn't mind carrying a knockoff as long as it was NOT branded as the real thing. I typically don't spend more than $50 on my EDC knife. It gets used and abused and occasionally lost. My wife got me an unbranded OTF once. It was cheap and unstoppable. The only negative thing I have to say about it was the pocket clip and glass breaker broke off. I don't carry it anymore because of that so now it permanently lives in my center console of my truck. My recommendation would be to find one of these knockoff microtechs that are unbranded or to pick up a good affordable folder. Personally I prefer an Axis or liner locking mechanism, but that's personal preference.
    I want to be clear, I'm not promoting foreign businesses over US businesses (especially local knife makers and gunsmiths if you have them), but at the end of the day, this shit still has to be affordable, and a good knife, regardless of brand, is better than no knife.

    Pretty impressive comparison! Interesting that it wasn't the blade lock that failed, it was the handle which I'm guessing is a Zinc alloy which would tend to deform under the hammer blows. 6061 Aluminum isn't the strongest alloy, I would expect that MT would be using 7075 which is much closer to mild steel in tensile strength, but then, that's not how the handle material failed, it failed in compression, though not really "failed" so much as deformed just enough to stall the blade. Most likely the knife could be put back into service by truing up the blade slot, and at least having a light-to-medium duty cutter.
    Gotta admit the MT UT was impressive!

    Wow, I am stunned by the lack of ethics in many of these comments. Some are saying things like, "Wow X-Ring, you showed me how great a clone is! I'm going to go get one." First of all, X-ring did not demonstrate what happens to cheap steel when testing it as he did. AUS-8 (which is probably what these knock-offs use) can do all of the stuff X-Ring did, but will roll and possibly even chip. Bohler M390 (which is what many Microtech blades are made of) will also withstand those tests AND keep their edge without damage. But, on top of all that, even if these knock-offs can do what you need them to do, you are supporting criminal enterprises when you buy them! If they were simply crappy 30.00 look-alikes, it would be one thing, but these clowns are counterfeiting the Microtech logo and branding. They are pirates, period. Supporting their deception is unethical at best, if not downright immoral. Look, if you can't afford a Microtech, that's OK. They are expensive. So, go get a Lightning OTF instead. It'll only cost you 30.00 and you didn't sell out. Lightnings are from an honest company who doesn't pretend to be something they are not. One day, when you can afford the real thing, it's be a much sweeter experience.

      @@XRING Thank you sir. BTW, I just watched the video where you burned and abused your Combat Troodon. I found it because I just purchased one and wanted to see some reviews. Wow, I was impressed. I know that to some they may see your torture tests as extreme but I, for one, want to see just how far I could push my tools without actually having to. I appreciate your work! Keep it up.

      I think is its far worse that there companies try to screw us by selling knives at a 900% mark up, if Chinese knockoffs are good enough to compete and at 1/10 of the cost then it is obvious who is getting screwed

    Ah yes, that 380$ extra for the actual microtec so that I can drive it through a 2×4 is completely worth it.
    Granted yes, if it is blatantly ripping the company off with branding, no thanks. However if it's just the design I'll gladly pay the 20$ for the "cheap crap" that is nearly on par for less than 1/10th the price.

      for starters dont let it get dull... buy a strop and some compound to put on one side of it and strop it the night after using it for example. its pretty easy to keep a sharp knife sharp but more difficult to resharpen it after letting it dull. worksharp sells from nice little hand sharpeners that would work. they sell a little guided field sharpener for 25 bucks and then they also sell a guided sharpener that pivots side to side as you sharpen that away its more forgiving if you dont angle the knife correctly while sharpening down to the end its around 50 bucks.
      worksharp also sells an automatic knife sharpener that plugs in for 50 bucks. Ive only used the field sharpener and its a nice little sharpener for 25 bucks. granted you may have to sort of freehand it if your knife isnt near the same angle as the guides.
      lanskys are also nice too and allow you to sharpen at more angles its also a good buy.

    The Vespa OTF's steal largely from Microtec designs, but they don't market them AS Microtecs... They put them over their own label and they do make some aesthetic changes to them. Their knifes however, ARE legit premium steels... Their lower level $80 knives are D2, but the $130-$230 knives are M390, etc... Several buyers have sent theirs off to a metalergy firm for testing and got the test results back and they were legit.

      @TheHollowGrind Před 4 lety

      The point people make about Microtech is that they claim the knife costs $10 to make (wrong) and they should sell them for $40. Now a China based company is making their own OTF knife but feel they need to charge $230 for it. Shouldn't they be able to make a quality OTF for $40? No one doubts that China CAN make a quality knife, but they are not making quality counterfeit knives for $40. Also, when it comes to counterfeits, it isn't in that company's best interest to make a knife that lasts, they rely on repeat business and know if you will buy one $40 knife you'll buy another when that one breaks... and another... and another. Eventually you'll have $300+ of broken counterfeits when you decide to buy one $280 Microtech and you'll finally find happiness.

    I would of loved to see if the blade and the parts from the clone would work in the real microtech, also tbh if they dropped the logo's on the knife they're making and just sold them as is it actually wouldn't be a horrible edc knife for a more budget minded person because for the $40-$60 price point it would actually be a really sweet knife for the money.
