  • Despite not winning either the short or the long programs, Tiffany Chin had a big enough lead over Tonya Harding in the compulsory figures segment to win the 1986 Skate America competition. Note the interesting comments by commentator JoJo Starbuck and coach John Nicks. Tiffany would actually dump this program music by the time of the 1987 United States National Championships.

It's jaw-dropping how badly put together this program's choreography and music are, compared to the long program she had the prior year set to "La Boheme", which was a masterpiece.

John Nicks coached Tiffany Chin, Naomi Nari Nam, and Sasha Cohen. All beautiful skaters who lacked consistent jumps.

Agree completely. So sad how she fell right off the US team. But, she still moved like no one else. Actually, I watched this program again and some of the moves were beautiful, but there was no attack on the triples.

@metsdudenj yup, at least she won some medals :)

@metsdudenj If I recall correctly, her placement at the Worlds in 85 was 2-2-3, so she would have won the bronze.

@nondescriptnyc In 1986 she would have finished fourth without the compulsories i believe as she got 4th in the long there

Its ironic that the compulsories cost Tiffany the bronze in Sarajevo, yet they are what gave her the two bronze medals in the last two Worlds she competed in. Without the compulsories, she would have finished fourth in the 85 and 86 Worlds.

Yep, compulsories produced winners that the public couldn't understand. Not having seen that phase of the competition, viewers didn't know why a skater had such a commanding lead going into the LP. So the SP was introduced in '73 to make things clearer. I still think it's a good idea to master the basics of any skill, but I think the SP reveals who has them down and who doesn't. Even without compulsories we still get some implausible winners. Alexei Urmanov, anyone?

Its sad, she became "Double Chin" in 1987. I always thought she was the most artistic and skater at the time, and NO ONE moved on the ice like she did. Its so sad with the triples, she could land them in practice, but always omitted them in competitions. This routine was a total preview of what would happen in nationals in 87.

I thought she was very good...not 'great', but good...

  • @metsdudenj

She screwed up the first move, almost falling on the camel spin, and had to improvise...really showed the weakness of her skating and her lack of traiining and endurance

Her spinning got so inconsistent. You can see on the deathdrop she pushes the edge onto the ice and slows down before she even starts spinning.

I saw Tiffany skate quite a few times and her flow and line was unmatched during the time she was skating -just a beautiful beautiful skater... the only one to blame for her decline is her nightmare of a mother... why John Nicks did not ban the women from the rink during practice sessions is truly beyond me!!!!!!
