- The 11/8 Starts on about minute 5:50 of the song, then It becomes clearer when Bass riff enters at 6:08 and it is subdivided in 6/8+5/8.
This section happens at the minute 7:19 of the song but now the 11/8 is alternating between a bar of 6+5 and other bar of 5+6. So the 11/8 goes through (6+5)+(5+6)+(6+5)+(5+6)....
At 7:36 Maynard enters on 7/8 ("Exorcise the spectacle") making it a 7 vs 11 polyrhythm between him and the band. He does 11 bars (11x7=77) and the next one (bar 12 of the movement -"fear") Maynard adds a rest of 4/8 completing the band's 11/8 (7+4=11) to not starting again the 7vs11 polyrhythm and enter the next section with them.
Eight Notes on a triplet shuffle feel on about 306 BPM (6/8's Dotted Quarters = 102 BPM)

Technically a polymeter, but still very cool! The two are often confused.
I was gonna say
Jesus, it's spelled out in front of me, and I still don't understand it. Haha.
same here
ok, we HAVE to tell adam neely FAST
:D
Same thought
This is performed so flawless...
I always wondered why this felt so "polyrhythm-ey" when I would play drums to it, before I finally realized Maynard was singing in a 7/8
I just realized this polyrhythm, searched for a confirmation, and here it is. Now I understand why that part made me think about Grand Canyon by Puscifer (7/8 over 4/4 polyrhythm in the chorus)
This is actually fucking nuts.
And I fucking love it
Man this was really cool. I would love to see you expand on this. Like a visual representation of each band members timing and how the switch on the fly throughout the entire song.
Shouldn’t the rhythm on the right side - that changes between 5/8 and 6/8 - be measured in 4th notes?
Tool is one of a kind. IMO the best band of all time.
🙏
Am I losing it, or is bass is on 7/8,?
Before Maynard comes in, yes.
adam neely wya
