    I love that Carey is wearing a #33 jersey in his live drum video of Pneuma. Like he knew we'd all be trying to figure out that 33/8 verse, when it's right in front of our faces the entire time 😂

    Sometimes I wonder if TOOL has ever written a song with so many complicated time signatures that even they lose track. I'd be interested in hearing more on Danny's drums in that jam session because when I've watched the Vic Firth video of him playing it, it looks like each hand and the foot playing the high hat are all on different but regularly converging time signatures. I can't even walk and chew gum at the same time and he has separate brains for each limb in his body.

      That's blaspheme, implying that Danny could create a rhythm so complex he couldn't keep count is like asking if God could make a boulder so big he couldn't lift it... though 1 is a contradiction so intense it could break ones perception of reality and have them question their beliefs to the point of letting go of all of their ingrained indoctrinated notions of self, the other is just religious nonsense.

    • @gabrielzinatorosa3024
      @gabrielzinatorosa3024 Před měsícem

      He does that in Rosetta Stoned too. Each of his limbs is playing in pace with the bass or guitars, one of his own and one in pace with Maynard until everything aligns in the climax of the song (which is by no means simpler and is a BITCH to get right 😂)

    I love your Tool deep analysis videos. I know just enough music theory to follow along _most_ of the time, while being reminded of how much I don't know. Analyses like this also have a lot to teach about songwriting, and I appreciate your observation that Tool are masters of fully developing a few simple motifs; it's what makes their songs feel very creative but very cohesive at the same time.

    This my friend - was awesome. You even explained to this nob why I never resolve the metrics. Your 14/8 - 12/8 - 7/8 deconstruction was such an OOOOOH-moment. Now I can headbang it (No - No i don't want to look like a dash-mounted wobbly head). This leads me to a challenge for you.
    Could you please consider to dissect what Danny does during the instrumental jam session? I have tried watching the video of him playing it - ever optimistic. Identifying that steady quarter-paced snare. The "tabla"-pad joyning with the triplets - the kick-drum joining the bass before he turns totally octopus on me - breaking my ability to keep the fractions under any kind of control. I know he is doing a trick with his right hand, as he simplifies the now-massive tension they have built up, by dropping the odd signatures down into the 4-squared before diving straight into the Pneuma-lyrics chorus pattern again.
    As a geophysicist, this is killing me (though I can inform you that there are plenty of my colleagues who can not resolve a 4/4 pattern in any meaningful way both on and off a dance-floor).

    Three quarters through watching this I decided to go back to studying for my architect professional certification because its way easier than trying to understand this. Having said that. Monster effort. Absolutely riveting. Made me realize that the dream of learning to play this on the drums will always remain just that ;)

      Amazing analysis. Truly the best, most concrete and tactile one I've seen, purely from a musicians perspective! I would love to see you dive into rush. Particularly the 2112 album.

    Who puts a thumbs down on these kinds of videos?? I try to imagine what kind of person would sit through this entire thing and think, "Yeah, fuck that." Thumbs down!! I guess some people just wanna watch the world burn.

    Great video man. Jesus. I subbed. Well deserved.
    Still can't square the verse guitar riff with the time signature. It's driving me nuts hahaha trying to learn this song for a Tool cover band

      Thanks! Glad to enjoyed it.
      Hmm yeah it can be tricky. I think it's valuable to learn the riff and play it along with a metronome and count out loud so you're really connecting with the time

    I think, if you’re willing to do another one off Fear Inoculum, then Invincible is another amazing song.
    Loved the vid!
