After a 13-year lull, Tool dropped "Fear Inoculum" in 2019 and easily topped the charts (remember when all the Taylor Swift fans got mad? Pepperidge Farm remembers.) If you ask me? What I've heard so far is classic Tool firing on all cylinders. In this video, I go down the rabbit hole and critically listen to the songwriting, layering, and how their subtle use of motifs is flat-out incredible. I discuss their unique style of songwriting, their use of rhythmic dissonance, using themes in different time signatures as counterpoint, how Justin's bass lines completely drive the song, and much more. 👽🌀

It's oddly easy to miss that during the last vocal chorus when they bring back the main bass riff, the guitar actually finally joins in and they both completely drop the pizzicato part of it and play it all legato for the first time. I actually listened to the song a few times before realizing the guitar "riff B" they usually layer over it (that you enjoyed so much in its main riff version at the end) completely disappeared. It just dials up the intensity and lyricism of that main theme of the song so so much. It's such a simple idea that it seems blunt but it just works when it happens once, 10mn into a song. In some regards I think Tool sometimes have this confidence that Pink Floyd had to just go "hey, here's this melody. We're going all-in on this thing and we hope you get it". If you don't, it sounds dumb and pompous but if it connects it's overwhelming. Maybe why I've encountered people with an intense dislike for those specific two bands. I guess when it doesn't connect it really whiffs hard.
This is a HELL of a way to put it. Really interesting take on that!
I really have struggled to figure out how both the bands can leave some entirely cold. They both seem so candid and intense to me.
Also very few can claim to output their level of sound quality. The arrangements and mixes in both cases are something else...

What I love most about Tool is how much they let the bass play the lead in their songs. Simple but SUPER effective.
Not particularly related, but Mudvayne does the same, and it's absolutely mind blowing. When I was in high school I dreamed of forming a band with one vocalist, a lead bass, a rhythm bass, and drums... But I'm not good enough to play any of those, lol.

After having listened to this song dozens (maybe hundreds) of times, it no longer feels like there's any part of it that doesn't line up. It's one of my absolute favorite Tool songs, because as soon as I start listening, it's like slipping into a different dimension where 4/4 doesn't line up correctly, and is thought of as the 'weird' time signature.
Seeing Dr Mark come unglued at 22:50 was all I needed to see this morning. Great way to start the day. Thank you again for diving in and looking under the hood of yet another TOOL masterpiece. Cheers!

I had the SAME REACTION! That low D in the bass punches you in the gut with freight train intensity in the best possible way.
30+ minute video on TOOL?! Great way to spend my lunch break! Fear Innoculum is probably the most challenging listen for me as the songs are very long and more nuanced than their other works. I found myself diving into 10,000 days and this record while doing long walks when my daughter was still in her stroller. I always found something new that would catch my ear. There's just nothing else like them.
Yeah this album has a lot more emphasis on the atmospheric, hypnotic, meditative, trancy side of Tool. Which I'm all about. I'm getting too old to scream. Except at the damn kids on my lawn!
It’s also their worst album, as per almost every Tool fan I’ve talked to (including myself). Increasing every track’s length, in turn decreasing the amount of tracks (interludes notwithstanding) doesn’t seem to be working for us.

@Red-Eyed_Goose idk man, that's what I thought too upon my first listen, right when it was released. But I just listened again recently, knowing what I was getting myself into, and I was reminded why I'm a tool fan. It really blew me away, forget it being a tool album, it's an amazing prog metal album.
I got into tool as a teen through their radio/ MTV hits, but I gained a much deeper appreciation for them with songs like "pushit" and "eulogy". This album is nothing but those types of songs, and they're really amazing. It's a shame that it took me a second listen. That's my biggest criticism. But that says as much about my preconceptions as a tool fan as the album.
@@Red-Eyed_Goose it's not my favorite but it definitely got better the more I listened to it and met it on its terms. It's still very much a Tool album but from a different place. But I really agree with Mark that you need to devote your entire attention to it otherwise you won't pick up what it's putting down and it will seem aimless and self indulgent when it's really a meticulously planned slow burn of an album.
@@nosnitsttam Dude, I’ve devoted my time to it. I’ve been listening to them since 1998, & w/ every album that’s come out since then, there have been multiple songs that grew on me over time. Some so much so that they’re now one of my favorites. I also understand why this is. Sometimes your brain has to get used to hearing to something that isn’t in a 4/4 time (for example), or to understand all its elements, etc.
Unfortunately for F.I., it has the most “meh” songs of all their albums. There’s only one song that I grew to love-the title track. Too many of them just linger in ways that I don’t really like, & NOT b/c they’re long, or rhythmically dynamic. Two of their longest, more intricate songs prior to F.I. are two of my absolute favs: ‘Third Eye’ & ‘Rosetta Stoned’. Nothing on F.I. comes close to those, for me, including ‘7empest’. Those guitar solos are something they’ve never done before, & I really don’t like them. Not b/c they’re different, but b/c they’re ironically generic, & in turn, scream of self-indulgence.
This is probably my most played song on the album, next to 7empest and Fear Inoculum. Possibly my most played Tool song in general now actually, but hard to say lol. It gets me everytime, whether it's goosebumps or tears.
It's so crazy how I don't get sick of these songs even with how crazy long they are, because they are so good at keeping them interesting with all the dynamics weaving in and out.
Also, that whole album was SO fulfilling after such a huge gap and wait. I had to be conscious of not letting my expectations go as high as they naturally wanted to go, just in case I ended up feeling underwhelmed by the new music. The opposite ended up being true and they blew my expectations out of the water, and I agree the album demonstrates some kind of increased level of maturity as a band, in a way that doesnt sacrifice energy.
So dope that you covered this song! I hope it prompted you to revisit the whole album with your undivided attention.

Add to how AMAZING they are, I love that I can get in my car, put on 7empest and as I’m pulling into work 15 minutes later it’s just wrapping up, and on my hurried drive home which takes 11 minutes I can listen to Pneuma 🤣🤣🤣 just additional bonus for me personally

Pneuma and Invincible are my go-to songs to play whenever I pull out a drop-d guitar or bass. They're not too difficult but so satisfying to play.
I am in the minority but I think Culling Voices is the best song on the newest album, as someone who loves all of the songs too.

What's also dope about you covering this song today is that the vibe is exactly right for it, because the 4 year anniversary (4 years already?!?!?) of the release of the Fear Inoculum album just passed less than 2 weeks ago. We got those unsettling autumn vibes really coming in here in the northern united states and it was such a perfect backdrop for this music when it came out, as it remains. Like listening to this now just blasted me back to the weeks following the release, when I was playing the album on repeat. I was also fortunate AF to have experienced them live on that tour for my first time, I think in October that year. 🙏🤯 SO GOOD.

I’ve only had a single opportunity to see Tool live about a year ago, but the live version of Pneuma was an unbelievable performance. The visuals they use with the show are so in sync with their music. You referenced the “deliberation” of the notes they use, and that continues through to their live performance. They are just a unique group of musicians.
I would love a reaction studying Peter Steele's bass playing...I know it's nothing completely earth shattering...but he did have a unique tone and played some very interesting bass lines...if nothing else, it would be nice to honor the man, he earned it...R.I.P. Peter, you are missed...
Elegance comes from simplicity applied in complex ways. Tool's music is elegant in this way. They weave tapestries that amaze. And when you listen very carefully and deeply into the mix, the sonic details that form the layered patterns and create the disruptions in the pattern are so tasty and subtle. Off this album I would def recommend you analyze Descending and 7empest (mostly for the middle instrumental section which has one of their greatest instrumental grooves and solos)
This album live, did it for me. 35, life-long Tool fan, I remember getting ready for school with Sober playing on MTV. Fear Innoculum was tough for me to like, immediately. Once I saw it live, especially live on psychedelics, it all made sense. Best Tool album yet! Thanks for the video!
I wish I could unhear FI and listen to it for the first time. Such a journey and has become my favourite album of theirs. They’ve really adapted my taste of music as I get older. Great reaction mate!

This is a great video, and I'm learning a lot! We just saw them this week in CO (in a venue with a capacity of 7200 I might add). We were very close and could see the interactions between the players. My partner (much more musically gifted than I ever will be) commented on the fact that during their long jam sessions, they looked at one another quite a bit. She noticed when they would circle back, they would kind of give one another an acknowledgement like "ready to go? let's go!" This kind of touches on the question you pose at 18:50 when you mention the freeform section in the middle and how they keep track of timing. Who knows if it's written that way, but it did seem that they're interacting with one another to ensure everyone is on the same page (phrase?). Thanks for the fun analysis!

If this is actually a candid reaction to a first time listen, then you are a genius. And I believe you are. Because you have such a broad insight. You are not being a bass teacher reacting to the bass playing. You are analyzing the whole song, the whole band, the writing, the execution, everything. And you are catching so many things on a first listen. I will be the first in line if you do any more songs off Fear Inoculum. Because, as you say, in this album you can find all the elements that made Tool Tool, but in a more refined way, and with so much to discuss about writing, execution, mixing and production! It's not the first time he's heard it. At 5:15 minutes he is already playing the higher note from the “2nd”. Runde” which he could theoretically never have heard before.

To add to the discussion, the time signature during the verse is a 33 beat phrase that could be chopped up any number of ways. Using Danny's first open hi-hat as the 1, I'd probably count it as 14/8 + 14/8 + 5/8. Each time Justin does the double hit, the second hit would be the 1 of the next bar.
Adam is playing a 12 note pattern (we could divide it 5/8 + 7/8 with the 1s being the first note after each hammer-on), but after two repeats that only gets us to 24 beats. In order to make up the remaining 9 notes, he plays the 5/8 pattern but adds the 4 note run that you mentioned right in the middle of it. Instead of adding that tag at the end of the riff, he adds it in the middle, playing the first 3 notes of the 5/8 part, then the 4 note run, then the 2 note hammer-on which brings him to 33 beats and lines him up with Justin.
I’ve always counted that verse phrase of 33 as 6-6-5-6-5-5. Or some people like 12-11-10. Any which way you slice it, it’s badass.

I really enjoy your authenticity and the way you actually cop to the boundaries of your knowledge. It really makes what you do know well shine so much better when you say things like "God it's that tone... *plays* whatever the notes are, man I love that". Just giving over and fully enjoying the music without completely going in analytical mode for the whole thing. Like, my dude you have perfect pitch if you wanted to break immersion and give your full attention to a particular part of that particular part, you could probably easily figure the notes out but you're just enjoying the whole. It's great.

Brilliant video, I've just recently discovered your channel and I've got to say, your way of articulating your thoughts and the analysis of the music is awesome. Also, you must be hungry to bring up food all the time haha (it works though). My favourite of this album is Descending. It may be my favourite song of theirs and I'm a long time listener who change my favourite Tool song a lot, but descending is just an absolute masterpiece. I saw it live pre-album release and the live act was some of the best moments in my life. Soo... I vote for Descending next. Keep up the good work!
Finally! Finally someone gives some attention and praise to the talented guitar in this song. I know the big deal is the amazing drums, but I freaking love the guitar sound and feeling in this masterpiece. Especially at the 9 minute climax, awesome riff! Gives me goose bumps too.
You explained pretty well how I always try to explain to people what makes Tool unique. I always say they’re more of an experience than it is just music. They take you on a ride.

Oh yes, one more reaction to Pneuma. Can't count how many reaction videos for this song and for the live version i've watched. This song is a masterpiece, my favorite from "Fear Inoculum". I just love so much when that slow and heavy riff comes, that bass tone is disgusting there. Now you have to watch the live/ Drumcam version, Danny Carey and his breathtaking performance.

Near the beginning when you mentioned it came in all when he said ‘Pneuma’ and you wondered if they plan for that / write it etc.
If you don’t know all of the music is written and finished and recorded as instrumental tracks ( so to speak ) then once it’s all done Maynard writes and records the vocals.

It's interesting that you made the comparison with Schism. When I first heard Pneuma, it immediately reminded me of Schism in some way of which I couldn't quite put my finger on. I've since heard several others make similar comments on their first listens of the song. At the time I never imagined that I'd like another Tool song more than Schism, but after about 20 or so times of hearing Pneuma, I could no longer deny that Schism was surpassed. Such a great, great song.
Left the first comment early, because I was understandably excited about the video. The analysis here is well beyond what we'd get from most channels. What you mentioned about section cues was interesting.
My background in playing live is in an orchestral context, and so I've had to play much longer pieces quite often. I never counted, because that's not what I want to be thinking about in a performance. The piece always ended up being like a story in my head. There are important key moments in a story that signal when you're moving into a new section. I can remember little bits of phrases from flutes, horns, etc that always kept me in the right place.
Hey, thank you! This is a PERFECT way to describe what I was aiming for. Outside of bass, I also played trumpet in wind ensembles and symphonic bands for over 10 years. Same deal - I'd have 84 bars of rests and would just rely on hearing what I knew to be in the last 4 of those 84 bars to bring me in. It's exactly like hearing a story and just knowing what's coming up. Appreciate you sharing this!

Best Tool album and the reason Eisenstein Prime actually has music out there. This is the direct inspiration for me as a musician and composer. I don't seek to simply write songs but compose an emotional experience for whoever is ready for what I have to say using guitar, bass and drums.
I really love that powerful bass entrance in Invincible, made it my favorite track in the album.
Just seen them live and gonna see them again in Charlotte NC in January. Greatest band ever. They sound even better live. Crazy. Favorite band since 1992 and finally got to see them in Charleston WV. It was so good, I am taking my son again to see them soon. Wahoo!! Tool rules!

This song is a audio magic trick, they show you the coin (the main riff motif), they make it disappear (interlude/drum solo), then the prestige happens and the coin is revealed (final riff explosion)!! Its master craft work.

Fear Inoculum is a masterpiece and I mean that 100%… absolutely. It’s ridiculously well made and well mixed and it’s pure art and expression.

I definitely got more "The Patient" vibes from this. Especially the slower beginning and those big guitar "choruses" that Mark calls them.
Great insight into their music here, I really enjoyed that 👍Undertow is definitely worth checking out, you mentioned The Flood which has a good bassline. The title track off Opiate is good too, very different feel to it.

Thank you for the fantastic breakdown. In particular I like how you describe what you think their ‘philosophy’ is, like how they give you bits and pieces in the beginning hinting at what they’re going to unleash later as the song peaks. Really awesome stuff! At 55 I’m just now discovering the mastery that is Tool and I find each album has its own brilliance so hard to pick a favorite. So for now this one is my favorite lol. Love Pneuma and next try Invincible, Descending, or 7empest all are excellent!

Yea that "signal" thing you mentioned is true. My band improvises a lot of our solos when we're live so we never really know how many bars anything will last for, so we always have different patterns we use to tell each other the change is coming. It's not always something that ends up on a studio track but definitely a helpful tool to have if you aren't playing your songs exactly the same way every show.

One thing that I do like, as I'm not a very strong left-hand worker, is that tool's fretting is often quite simple, whilst the rhythm (right hand) is more intricate.
So the bass line of 12,14 - 12,15 - 12,12, etc is lovely to sink into.

I really really Love the Fear inoculum album. I listem to it almost daily. Love sitting and istening to the vinyl release with the lights low and just letting the music take me anywhere.
Hahaha, that Creed reference... not sure a lot people got it :D But have to say, I really like your content, the sincerity and authenticity in how you present analysis, doesn't feel scripted (dont care really). Just really interesting to listen to you talk over, rather present some flabbergasted reaction to the material being reviewed. Most reaction videos would do that, you generally give us a glimpse of how you analyze the music. On some vids, especially when you play over, it made me understand the composition and thus the music itself so much better than before. Highly underrated channel and content in the age where people just want feel good instant gratification vids :D Thank you!

I like your analogy of tools music being like taking the stairs. Mine is more crude. Tool is like edging. Start slow, take you closer, pull back, even closer, pull back, like 5-6 times until they peak and just explode and then either its over right then, or a very brief come down and then its over. The Grudge is a great example. Fucking incredible.
Tool albums and tracks are like my kids and their personalities and character. Exquisitely different. From Undertow to FI, I can't say which I like best anymore, because they're all rewarding in their own way. And as music goes, I have emotions and memories attached to each album. FI however, is uniquely more "something", and I can't come up with the word, haha. But it fits, and it's Tool. Quality sonic experiences. Now, please take on Descending, my favorite track on the album.
