- We are back with another Tool reaction video. This one is Danny Carey's drum cam during a live show and is playing Pneuma by Tool of course. Tools timing and execution is so intricate that it feels like a choreographed dance. He has to be up there with some of the best drummers of all time given the skill, execution, and passion he shows in this video.

Danny can keep a separate time signature with each arm and each leg, all at the same time.
That's why they call him the octopus
He was a huge follower and fan of Neil Peart oes does the same on his solos. Like two different people top and bottom!
I suggest these guys seriously take a look at RUSH
He is AMAZING!
@@hawk6467 when I was younger I hated Rush. I liked heavier bands...but when I starting really playing guitar at a much better pace and enjoying music from a "musician's POV" I LOVED them. They were GREAT musicians and wrote great songs
One of my favorite things in life is watching people experience Tool for the first time.
He's called the octopus for a reason also helps he can play different time signatures with each arms and legs simultaneously and still make he's magic so precise
A band with a lead drummer and a rhythm singer 🔥🔥🔥
Brilliant!
three aliens and an octopus
Agree 100% the vocals do almost provide the anchor while Danny tinkers
Ive heard Maynard say in interviews that he faces away from the crowd at concerts and sings low because he isnt the talent!!! Danny Carey is the best living drummer!!!!
@@AlexTushJr I think he’s being modest. I’ve never seen anyone move like Maynard on stage or heard anyone sing like he does or write lyrics like he does.
Imagine a group that refuses to compromise on the music. It takes them so long to make a record but as a result the output is transformative. Everyone who hears Tool, and it doesn't matter what genre of music you gravitate too, Tool earns your respect.
They were virtually the last mega band to be on iTunes/Spotify
“Their music is like a dream” That is the best description of Tool I’ve ever heard!
Like most Tool fans, I really wish I could go back and listen to these songs for the first time again...watching reactions is as close as I can get to that feeling once again. Such amazing music by master craftsmen.
i went from shitty earbuds that came with my ipod touch back in the day to some really good headphones, and it was like hearing it for the first time again. so much that i didnt hear before, it was amazing
we kinda can with these cats
The first time I heard descending was live. That's my favorite now lol. I had a 2 hour drive back home, and I listened to that song until I went to bed. Then class the next day.
@@bdbyt6835 When Fear Inoculum first came out I listened to that entire album on repeat that day until 4am the next morning. Descending and Tempest were the greatest feeling I’ve experienced in my life next to seeing them live when they were on the 10,000 days tour in ‘06. These guys reaction is so genuine I can almost feel it again. Tools music truly is an experience and not just music.
Tool is trying to create a visceral spiritual reaction. The fact that you guys picked up on that aspect is so insightful. Nice video.
“I feel safe watching him play drums.”
Truer words have never been spoken. He’s one of us now.
Tool is medicine. Spiritual medicine
%100
I always have said tool is my church. It brings me to a place of ancestors and forests and my tribe.
Very shamanic!
Fuck yes!
Great way to put it.
#LearnToSwim
The great part about Tool is that everyone gets a solo.
The crazy part about Tool is that they play them at the same time.
Yes!
This is the only band I've ever seen that sounds as good or even better live than on their albums.
Don't forget Pink Floyd.
RxBandits
I was drunk at a kings of Leon show and it sounded wayyy better. But again, I was fully in the bag.
czcams.com/video/4dqNk-O9qKA/video.html
Absolutely agree, except I’ve seen a few others. Gojira is another id highly recommend checking out live.
Danny Carey is a huge basketball fan. This concert was in Boston which is why he wore the Celtics gear. He changes it depending on what city they are playing.
Yup. Everytime I see them in Eugene, Oregon, Danny is wearing a Ducks jersey.
@@ronabellbirge2166 Eugene is where the Tool fan base live.
Danny's a Kansas native, fan of the Jayhawks.
Depending on city nba jersey if they don’t have a professional team he wears college jerseys
Danny is 6'5" and ultimately chose the drums over pursuing a career in playing basketball!
We waited 13 years for this album!
Did you get mad when APC released an album before we got this one? I was like 🤬🤬🤬🤣🤣
@@chuckiechuck909 no, each band MJK is in is a separate sound and movement. So I enjoy them all seriously.
I just saw them live a few weeks ago. It’s not possible to put into words what these guys do. My brain is still trying to figure out what I experienced.
I feel like they throw in a 4/4 sometimes just to give the rest of us mortals a chance to catch up.
These guys are 4 individual masters of their own instruments. Combined they create absolute magic.
Thank you for reacting to this band!
It’s always nice to watch people experience Tool organically for the first time
Danny's drumsticks look like hummingbird wings in his hands. ✌️
The whole Fear Inoculum album is EPIC
100%
It sorta sucks...but ok
@@drysiftwizard3469 If you don't at least like Invincible and 7empest you just haven't let it steep as long as their older albums.
@@drysiftwizard3469 ya not sure what you heard from it.. but in my opinion it’s got 3 of the best songs they’ve ever done and that’s saying a lot cuz their catalog is full of amazing songs.. Pneuma, Invincible and Descending are straight up insane songs… and this album is their best sounding sonically by far.. everything is mixed so perfectly, you can hear everyone so crystal clear.. and Danny’s drums have never sounded better and gigantic … once people realize the genius of this album, sadly Tool will probably have hung it up
Pfff wtf ¿
I love seeing new Tool fans come in and really “get it” so quickly. Solid insight and video, guys.
My favorite part of this video was around the 28 minute mark. It summed up Tool in the statements you were making without you meaning to. You were both getting into the philosophy and the psychology of how performing this music can affect the world around you and really showing your intelligence and introspection, then you ended that discussion with "These dudes are crazy, Man". That is Tool in a nutshell. All the intelligence in everything they do but it doesn't mean shit if at the end of the song you don't just say "Wow, that was badass". This is my first time watching you guys and I loved the insight and, oddly, your vocabulary. I respect anybody who takes the time to build a good vocabulary. Fellow musician, reactor, and now, subscriber.
Hard same. Third video of theirs that I watch, and I finally had to subscribe, because yeah they Get It, and they break it down so well. I love they recognize the philosophy in addition to the artistry. It gets really hard to articulate, but it's all here.
Danny is close to 60yrs old !! The whole band is in their 50s ! If you didn't notice in the beginning, he has his own drum stick line !! Athletes get sneakers, drummers get their own signature sticks !!
Jay
Danny is 61
@@MrTech226 61 is close to 60
I’ll correct everyone, 62. Yea, still close to 60 but over 60 would be more accurate
He’s a master!
And Gavin Harrison gets to design his own Sonor drums 😉
Been a fan for nearly 30 years now. It's cool watching the different reactions from people that are new to them. Like them or not, most people can appreciate the musicianship and creativity in their music. Same with the lyrics on most of their songs. Whether you agree with them or not, they have something to say that will at least make you try and decipher them.
Right In Two , case in point.
Then you can make another opinion on lyrics depending on your mood or feelings of the day.
Right in two ❤️❤️❤️🙌🏻The message of that song never ceases to stay relevant.
I'm fairly new to Tool, I guess maybe 2 years. They're awesome and I have no idea how it took so long for me to hear them.
So you’re OGT? Back from ‘92? From the first EP?
@@jamielunsford1 haha nice touch
This is literally the perfect song. You just witnessed the best drummer of all time.
I promise you, a Tool concert is one of THE BEST shows you will EVER see. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, just get to a show! Lol
If they want to go to a Tool show that $200 needs to be collected somewhere.
Right! Spend the 200 on tickets!!! Just GO SEE TOOL LIVE!!! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
You must be the monopoly guy..
Really appreciate you guy’s perspective! Enjoyed each reaction so far. Can’t wait for more! Thanks guys!
The man is an atomic clock And as complicated as this is when they play it live he plays it note for note every night
Every time I see them live, I’m always just frozen in awe by the end. I swear, Danny isn’t fully human! Lol
Absolutely yes!!
Right now 1-2 Danny and Matt Garstka from animals as leaders
He did, however, make a couple of mistakes in this performance. Not throwing shade, just pointing out that he is indeed human. 👍🏽
@@sean_b_drummer yeah literally one of the first notes on his midi pads right at the start
I been listening to Tool many years and still will hear something new some new aspect every time I listen to even their old stuff…..first album is just amazing for it’s time.
#NailedIt!!! Tool’s music does something for the soul on a molecular level. Remember, we are not souls inside of bodies, but rather bodies inside of souls.. hence the aura. Cheers. 😉💚🕊🙏🏻
Danny Carey, the Larry Bird of drums
Danny's background and formal education in music is in jazz and he's still to this day a high level jazz musician plays with all the best jazz in the world regularly
My favourite drummers - John Bonham, Bill Ward and Danny Carey are all heavily jazz inspired. Coincidence or should I start listening to jazz?
@@lukefender94 you stole my thunder!!!!! Yes, historically most of the top tier drummers have a huge jazz background. Bill Ward is my personal favorite. He is tragically underrated IMHO
Welcome to the Tool rabbit hole gentlemen!!
This is the best track they could have used for the drum cam! The Octopus is one of the greatest drummers of all time hands down! The reach, technique, feel, groove, and complexity takes you to a higher spiritual level.
"I feel safe watching him play drums" might be the most accurate and hilarious comment ever made about Danny 😂
I came here to say the same thing. I loved that comment 😂❤. So actuate:)!
Welcome to the party…Been listening to Tool since they started.
"He's in and out."
There can be no higher praise for a drummer.
You will never experience the beauty till you VIP a live show......
When I VIP in Denver they played Sober during the soundcheck
21:00 I love that you said that. Danny gets the respect for technical ability , all day every day, everyone knows this man is a PROBLEM on drums lool, but not enough people give him props for the feeling. I honestly think its the fact that he has both the technical AND the feeling that make this guy so great and so loved by so many people ,and these days not just Prog Metal fans, in the past few years I feel like the world is now seeing just hos good Tool are and just how amazing Danny is. As someone who has been a huge Tool fan since 97/98 this is quite nice to witness. Danny's level of feel and groove married with the technicality is mind blowing
Tool's music is hella complex, but there is almost always a groove you can find in there, if its not focused around the snare its usually the cymbals or hi hat.
Listening to a lot of Tool really is an education/foundation in Musical Rhythmical theory but also a case study in songwriting. They manage to play with the instruments and exploit their skill, whilst still managing to frame it withing great songs, that are works of art.
As a musician AEnima has been like a Carrot dangling in front of me, to me that Album is a zenith, something I try and emulate in atmosphere in a lot of my music, or at last take huge inspiration from, and that album marks Tool's emergence into the true sound of the band we all know and love today, but when AEnima came out, no one was doing shit like that
tool is up there with the greats. Rush, Maiden, Zep...just amazing. saw them about 5 years ago in MTL. Best show ive been to
“I feel safe watching him play drums”
Nail, meet Head. 🤘❤️
Saw the pot video first now I’m following you guys and and love your reactions to probably the most talented 4 guys to ever form a band!
I saw your comment about the tool level you’re at and your reactions and insights during the pot video tell me that you guys are there already.
You guys are my new fav duo to watch reacting to my beloved genre of rock!and my fav band tool.
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This song feels like a reminder that we are all from the same source spiritually..
you have to understand the way Tool works, the music is written first with only the drums, bass, guitar, then its given to Maynard, who hears the sound fresh and writes the lyrics to fit the sound. It's what makes the lyrics touch the soul of the music
Bro, I'm the biggest tool fan ever, going back to the early 90s, and I've never heard tool described better than yall... .
" a dream that doesn't seem to make sense, and then it does...."
Unbelievable....thanks guys
Love how genuine you gents are as lovers for music, much respect, love tool
These guys changed my perception of what music could mean to me. Not just about Tool but opened me up to all kinds of different music. Great job guys. By the way that jersey is customized and says Carey on the back. He’s a big time basketball fan that grew up in Lawrence Kansas and actually got several offers to D1 schools to play hoops but decided pursue something he knew he’d for sure go pro in. In my humble opinion he’s the best living drummer. Their guitar player was also doing special effects for major Hollywood movies like the original Jurassic Park and Independence Day. So all these cats are super talented and multi faceted and took a big risk to quit amazing opportunities in order to pursue this music thing. Also Carrey is over 60 in this video. Keep that in mind. He’s a jazz drummer that happens to be in an amazing progressive hard rock band. Nothing else like these dudes. Plenty of attempted imitations but nobody can pin down the sound cause they’re too good. 😎
" Pneuma" means creative spirit. What better band than Tool to express it! Glad you guys enjoyed it.
Danny Carey has been rank number 1 by almost every music magazine for the last 10 years.
“Bro” headphones will allow you to hear every band members greatness
I subscribed because y’all are genuine. No fluff, no BS, just authenticity. I hope your channel brings you happiness and success.
Keep in mind dude is over 60 years old!! (You should watch him in the 90’s) Best drummer ever. Best band ever. Oh, and they write music then add lyrics. Fun fact.
One of the greatest nights of my life I sat second row for Tool at Nokia Theatre in LA on the 10,000 Days tour. After the encore, I caught one of Danny’s sticks. Still have the stick, and now I play drums too.
Seeing Tool in live is indeed a spiritual experience! ❤️
To answer your question at 23:39... yes, Maynard does leave the stage sometimes during the long instrumentals.
I love you guys are getting sucked into all the great nuances and finding out that you can't get it all in one shot. Tool demands that you revisit, often. That you listen and hear and think. So rad.
Thanks Mike! We're really enjoying the journey as well.
-De
You don't go to a Tool concert you EXPERIENCE a Tool concert. Listening to them is like breathing for the first time
Amen to that!! Maynard is not your average "front" man as he hangs out in the back of the stage, and off to the sides. When I saw them in Toronto, Molson Amphitheater, Maynard remained behind a sheet the entire concert! Of course you could see his famous mowhawk! My sister and I went up to the stage, and I swear that Maynard was dancing exactly how my sister was dancing!! TOOL ARMY MAN!
Actually watching Danny's abilities to effortlessly perform polyrhythms, gives a whole new appreciation, as opposed to just hearing it
He has a custom uniform for every city that has a basketball team
These guys are like the highest order of professional athlete. They just are a cut above, for whatever reason. Perhaps it's the soul/spirit which somehow aligns with the body and mind. The results are complete with soul and technical mastery. It's such a hook, these types of individuals - Jordan, Gretzgy, Aretha, Miles Davis, Tom Cruise, Whitney Houston, to name a few. Their energy, will and talent, draw us to them and they inspire our lives, even in their personal suffering because, after all, we're all human beings, flesh and blood. What a story each of us has. Thanks guys.
My brain almost literally exploded when I finally realized after 12 years of listening to this song that Danny Carey was timing the song in 2/4 the entire time.
One of favorite things about seeing tool play live is getting to hear Danny play the drums.
Dude is just different. I'm a fan!
-De
It’s awesome that you both really appreciate the incredible talent that this group has. Tool, the band, has been around since the year 1990, so they’ve been around the block artistically speaking. They’re song, Pneuma highlights Danny Carry’s ability to be completely comfortable with his polyrhythms. …… also, he is a lot of the time referred to as, The Octopus 🐙
Take care Tool Army 👍
His toms are Mandala electronic computer programmed and a Wave electronic drum for tabla sound 👍🏻🔥❤️
Tool fan of 25 years. They are on another level live!
You guys are really onto what TOOL is about. They Do do some "third eye" substances, pull back the veil, and bring that vision and spirituality to this reality. Danny is also into sacred geometry, his kit is set up accordingly. Been a Tool Fool since "99, you NEVER tire of them. Something new every time you listen. Thanks for this.
At around 18:00 when Dre asks what the guitar is doing, it's doing nothing. Adam is playing a foot-operated synth. A Moog Taurus to be precise. It looks similar to the bass foot-pedals on an organ.
I don't know if it's the same model, but Justin has a foot-operated synth, too. You can tell who's playing synth because their standard instrument drops out.
Danny usually wears a Jersey from the city that he's playing in. He's a huge basketball fan. He's 6'5".
Guys PLEASE go see them in concert lol! Between the music and the visuals , you will fall deep into it. It’s an amazing experience everyone must partake in at least once if possible !
Welcome to the club 🤘🏼🤟🏼🤙🏼👏🏽👏🏽
Tool is what you get when you put four musicians who are over critical genuses together. When they produce a cd each member lays down their part individually then sends the tracks to the next member. When all of the music is 100% complete it’s sent to Maynard and he then writes the song lyrics to each song.
This band takes you on a complete journey with each song, it reminds me of Pink Floyd with their poly rhythms and how they treat key changes like chord progressions to change the whole mood. Please check them out if you haven't already.
The shirt also signifies the verse time signature of 33/16. The chorus is 4/4.
My favorite part of the Tool live performances I've been to is that Maynard the lead vocals will often sing from behind a curtain or wall and put the band front and center. The last time I saw them I sat way in the back with my eyes closed just soaking it all in.
He was just under 60 years old when this was recorded, too. I was at the concert for his 58th birthday just before this tour. Dude's still playing at this level and showing no sign of stopping.
Danny Carey is considered one of the best drummers in the world, his nickname is the octopus, because he plays like he has 8 arms, and is classically trained. If you want to learn more about them I would recommend you check out the TooL documentary called From Opiate to Fear Inoculum, it's shows their journey from how they got started and all the things they had to go through to get to this point in their music careers and the evolution in their music it's a really good documentary about them.
I 2nd this message! Spiral out
That reverse angle was messing with my head 🤕 Great reaction though guys!
Imagine being a right-handed kid abd the first music video I saw where you could really see the drummer play was Genesis with Phil Collins who I didn't know was a lefty. I became a left handed air drummer for a few years.
Sometimes he plays Lefty.
He's always on time
Great vid. "I feel safe watching him play drums." Epic comment!
Danny actually almost pursued a career in basketball. I think he was considering going to college basketball, but decided to be a drummer instead.
Glad you got to this one 🤘🔥🎶
Can't wait for Jambi, right in two, parabol/parabola
its really awesome seeing people who never really experienced TOOL completely GET IT!!
they way you both articulate your perspective is so awesome... I love the ways you describe your experience!! keep up the great work !
Watching you two live the feelings myself and many other felt back in 2006, is beautiful. To see two people honestly appreciate music, is amazing.
Amazing reaction gentlemen!
Love your analytical commentary. You actually understand the depth of these musical virtuosos. It draws us in. Amazing! Keep it up!
Peace. ✌🏼
Danny has a drumset made for him where the shells are made of melted down cymbals.(Paiste). He's a huge jazz/fusion fan so some of the older jazz drummers donated a cymbal so he kinda has his heroes with him when he plays.
I was just about to make that comment. Did you see the Vic Firth interview where he talks about the spirit & the energy of all the drummers who played those cymbals? Like you said, heroes are with him. He still tours with those 2 kick drums. He says they weigh a ton. 🤣
@@chuckiechuck909 Thanks, I will check that out.!
Gentlemen, great reaction! I saw them on tour just before covid, not a cheap band to see, but the stage, sound, production... The lighting, the visual effects, of course the performance of the band... one of the best shows ive seen, it was an immersive and memorable experience. 10/10 to the band and all the production crew to pull off such a fantastic tour/show!
It mimics your heartbeat, its primal, thats how they get you.
I would love to see Danny just hop into an African drum circle. His drumming seems to express something primal. Not animalistic, but just some deep since of rhythm and connection and healing that I think a lot of us black people connect with drums be it tribal drums, jazz drums, trap drums, etc
Well said
I think he actually does that
He and I have a friend in common. He's travelled to India, Africa, and Nepal, that I know of, to study with drum masters learning about polyrhythms and technique over the years. He's never stopped studying and practicing at all. Many people already know that he's been playing sax in a jazz trio also.
@@stevenwillie2782 Oh, I know all of this. I just meant I would love to be a fly on the wall and actually see it, not "I would love to see him try this", because I know he's already done his research to the nth degree.
That is why people love Tool. The music speaks to our inner being.
The lead singer also lets the rest of the band write the songs before he puts any vocals on them or even has lyrics. They all jam out for a few years and present the tracks to Maynard and put vocals on them. Their earlier albums were different in style because he was more involved in the writing process but it also slowed the process down so he backed away while the rest of the band did their thing. They are all very intelligent as well. Many have PHDs and the guitarist directed most of their videos.
Tool is definitely a unique kind of kick ass. Every aspect of every note, all the meshing and competing different time signature, and the groove dear god the groove. Tool is very inductive to deep thought and understanding, it's a meditative spiritual experience that bring all that truly listen together on one level or another.
De bruh the beard. Seriously that thing is cut fine and tight.
I have watched 50+ reactions to this video. He amazes me every time. Most reactors don't see the details in this bit. You two can see the intricacies of his work. I appreciate the knowledge
I we appreciate the comment Dave. Much love. And thanks for the awesome compliments on my beard 👌🏾

Pneuma means breath, air in motion. The whole album is healing.
Πνευμα dirives from πνοή,that means breath in greek but its used in a metaphysical way also 4 a deeper meaning!u dead right
I waited years for this album and it came out the day before my trip from the east coast to the west coast by car. I played this album over and over for well over 2000 miles. This song specifically played as I crossed into the Appalachian mountains in the early morning fog and as I came down the Arizonan mountains in a mist. Both times was a religious experience. Worth the wait man.
The only other rock band that gave me those feelings was Pink Floyd. Alot of fantastic rock music but Tool and Pink Floyd are my cathedrals.
Right on, bro!! Same here!!! 🤘🫡✌️
Pneuma is the creative spirit
Asics wrestling shoes are an old rock/metal drummers trick. They let you feel the pedals better than anything else!
Best Band I have ever seen live, right next to Queen, but for different reasons. They are so good, I have my left arm covered with a "Tool-sleeve". Greets from Germany! Oh, sub, by the way!
There is a horrible echo in the audio when the music is playing... Did you add that to avoid copyright?
yeah it's horrible man, you can't react to a drum solo then screw up the drum solo audio
I think they were over-dubbing it with like a half second delay or something, it was awful
I caught that too! If they were listening to the same thing, they did not get a proper experience. It was painful to watch, because the timing was so dislocated.
First time watching you two young men, I am impressed with your demeanor and your composure. Thank you both.
Tool, each member is the best at what they do. Each a high vibrational intelligence.
Its easy to figure the rhythm blocks... Danny's hands are playing to the time of Maynards lyrics and his feet are following Adam's guitar and Justin's bass. The timing is another story... it switches with every verse.
Suggest some echo reduction for walls as well
Headphones, lyrics, and an open mind. The A,B,Cs of reaction videos! Love your channel!
Hey Guys....It took me a while to appreciate Tool....I had friends that just threw it on HARD OUT and expect immediate acceptance. I went at my own pace....and found it. Love the discourse you bring.
