    Based on the extraordinary character at the center of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl’s most iconic children’s book and one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, “Wonka” tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today.
    From Paul King, writer/director of the “Paddington” films, David Heyman, producer of “Harry Potter,” “Gravity,” “Fantastic Beasts” and “Paddington,” and producers Alexandra Derbyshire (the “Paddington” films, “Jurassic World: Dominion”) and Luke Kelly (“Roald Dahl’s The Witches”), comes an intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion, all told with fabulous heart and humor. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time-proving that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you’re lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible.
    Starring alongside Chalamet are Calah Lane (“The Day Shall Come”), Emmy and Peabody Award winner Keegan-Michael Key (“The Prom,” “Schmigadoon”), Paterson Joseph (“Vigil,” “Noughts + Crosses”), Matt Lucas (“Paddington,” “Little Britain”), Mathew Baynton (“The Wrong Mans,” “Ghosts”), Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water,” the “Paddington” films, “Spencer”), Rowan Atkinson (the “Johnny English” and “Mr. Bean” films, “Love Actually”), Jim Carter (“Downton Abbey”), with Oscar winner Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”). The film also stars Natasha Rothwell (“White Lotus,” “Insecure”), Rich Fulcher (“Marriage Story,” “Disenchantment”), Rakhee Thakrar (“Sex Education,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral”), Tom Davis (“Paddington 2,” “King Gary”) and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (“Paddington 2,” “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “Mary Poppins Returns”).
    Simon Farnaby (“Paddington 2”) & Paul King wrote the screenplay, based on a story by King and characters created by Roald Dahl. Michael Siegel, Cate Adams, Rosie Alison and Tim Wellspring are serving as executive producers. King’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Chung-Hoon Chung (“Last Night in Soho,” “Ah-ga-ssi”); Oscar-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (“Tenet,” “Dunkirk”); editor Mark Everson (the “Paddington” films); Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (the “Paddington” films, “Topsy-Turvy”); and composer Joby Talbot (the “Sing” films). Neil Hannon of the band The Divine Comedy is writing original songs for the film.

    I would love to see you all watch the original, then the new with Johnny Depp, and then this one. I think its only fair since Oak hasn't seen any of them and its been a bit for Mason and Answer so you all have a fresh point of reference. I actually just watched Johnny Depp's this weekend and honestly love both different ways. Gene Wilder made the movie magical and fabulous and Johnny Depp made it funny with a sarcastic edge that I loved so I'm definitely here for a prequel. It would be fun to see you all enjoy them too! Can't wait!

      I liked pretty much everything about the Tim Burton version - EXCEPT Johnny Depp. His portrayal had nothing to do with the guy in the book. He was creepy and weird and had none of the charm and sparkle of the original guy. This one actually looks good.

    • @davismorgan99
      @davismorgan99 Před rokem +2

      I appreciate the effort with the Tim burton version but in my opinion the original is a hundred times better. Gene wilder plays the part she perfectly that I was shocked when they tried to remake it. Instead of Wonka being a dry, weird, maniac that actually cared for the children, Depp played him as some out of touch psychopath and it killed the charm of the character for me. Plus, all of the stuff before they get to the factory is solid GOLD. The wonkamania is portrayed so good in that original.

    The one thing- aside from the visuals- that I'm really loving about this trailer, is the slightly insane but endearing and sweet at the same time quality that Timothy is giving off. Which is so characteristic of Willy Wonka. You can feel the Harry Potter/Paddington Vibes all over this movie and I'm down for it. It actually makes me a little teary-eyed, because it gives me the vibes from the Gene Wilder movie with a touch of the Johnny Depp movie.
    Besides, you've thrown in Rowan Atkinson AND Hugh Grant?? Huge win!

    The chocolate cartel in this are three chocolate makers referenced in the original book: Slugworth, Fickelgruber and Prodnose.
    I like that we're going to properly see their rivalry and interactions with Wonka in this film.
    Especially as we have Mathew Baynton as Fickelgruber, who I know best from the classic British shows: Horrible Histories (an educational historical sketch show) and Ghosts (a hilarious show about a couple dealing with the ghosts in their inherited mansion). And since his friend (and fellow actor) Simon Farnaby, who wrote Paddington 2, is a co-writer on Wonka, I think this will work out just fine.
    I would highly recommend watching both Chocolate Factory films, as in this trailer there's already quite a few references to the Gene Wilder version, the music in the background is very similar to Pure Imagination, and when Hugh Grant dances there's an Oompa-Loompa like melody.
    Can't really see any references to the Johnny Depp version though. I wonder how much they'll bring in from that rendition. There was a new backstory for Willy Wonka in that film, so we'll have to see if this version takes any of those ideas.

    • @deadsetondreams1988
      @deadsetondreams1988 Před rokem +2

      The only references I can see so far are some of Timothee's mannerisms he seems to be blending both versions a little bit. This version is said to be a prequel to the original Gene Wilder version so as you said, we shall see when it comes out, I can't wait =^_^=

    It appears that they are basing this more on the prequel to the original Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) than the Johnny Depp one. I would highly recommend seeing at least that original movie before hand because it appears there will be some Easter eggs you may miss.

    I like that they honored the original appearance design of the Oompha Loompa(s) . The original movie was a gentle kids movie, the Depp was darker and really more true to the book. Dahl was not the most sweet of childrens authors and his books were filled with a lot of dark images which the Depp movie did bring forward. I liked them both equally with a nod to Depp for the story and acting and the Original for sweetness. There is not a lot in the book about Wonkas back story and this appears to be an imagining so totally free to invent. The original book came out when I was in the 4th grade and I remember how much I enjoyed it, but looking back, now, how much, as well that went over my head. I am very much looking forward to this movie and it feel worthy of seeing in the theater to appreciate the visuals

    I always liked the theory Willy Wonka is George Weasley
    Both redheads and British.
    In his office everything is split in half missing a piece(because fred is dead his other half)
    George is the one who had his ear cut off and wonka has trouble hearing in one side.
    And why his candy is magical is because of magic.

    I seem to remember in the original film, Wonka said he travelled to Umpa-umpa land and saved all the Umpa Lumpa's from beasts that hunted and ate Umpa's specifically. But this film shows us he meets them in a shop of curiosities (unless Hugh Grant will then send Wonka to save them) But even then, Wonka's story made out that he found the island by accident. This is why prequels are bad.
    Look at Solo, the origin of his last name. The origin of his gun. The origin of how Chewie got his blaster belt (even though we saw him in Revenge Of the Sith set at the same time with it) and how Hann can fly the Falcon (spoiler, he doesnt. Its a woke feminist AI that hates men and is pro robot revolution and was dating Lando in a robo-sexual relationship)
    that said....they are probably rebooting the Wonka films, recreating their own new story. Be interesting when they get to Charlie since the kids were stereotypes of the time. Since they had a gun enthusiast, a rich snob, a poor kid. etc. Reflect that today and it'll be interesting.

      In the trailer though he specifically says let me jog your memory as if they've met before and Willy Wonka forgot, perhaps. Once he starts playing the tune, it seems to remind him because he says he doesn't think he wants to hear that as if he was remembering what previously happened while being played the tune.
      Also, you can't base things such as timelined events based off of a trailer alone, I've seen trailers literally change the dialogue that actually happens in the movie because they didn't want to give away a spoiler. I've also seen trailers that included deleted scenes in it.

    To me, this movie seems like it’ll be too whimsical, if that makes sense. Both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp (as well as the original story) gave Willy Wonka a slight crazy edge along with his whimsical nature, but this story seems like it’ll make him “quirky” as opposed to crazy.

    The 2 versions of Wonka are very different adaptations and the prequel looks like a mix of the two. Gene is the best Wonka! I'd suggest watching that one first. He has a lot of weird quirks and some traits are unexplained so it would be fun to watch the prequel and see it fill in all the blanks.

    Yeah there’s definitely a ton (as in, all the adult actors/actresses I could see in the trailer) that if not known internationally are still big names on British tv - but I guess I’ll have to let you guys off for not recognising any of them! 😂 Hope you all (DD as well obviously if you haven’t seen them) decide to watch the other films, can’t say I liked the second at the time due to probably my nostalgic bias for the first (whoops), but I’d probably give it a second chance watching with you guys on patreon - you’ve already changed my mind on quite a few things!
    Edit: Oh yeah, Matt Lucas was one of the hosts on The Great British Bake Off. Think he’s left now but the two hosts are generally British comedians (not that I’m really a fan of his comedy). I forget that the show’s more popular internationally now, only time I’ve watched past the first few seasons probably over a decade ago have been the seasons when people I know are competing, so it weirdly still just feels like a little local baking competition! 😂
