Badd Medicine here and its Legally Blonde reaction time
Legally Blonde is a 2001 American romantic comedy film directed by Robert Luketic in his feature-length directorial debut and scripted by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith from Amanda Brown's 2001 novel of the same name. It stars Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, and Jennifer Coolidge. The story follows Elle Woods (Witherspoon), a sorority girl who attempts to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Davis) by getting a Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School, and in the process, overcomes stereotypes against blondes and triumphs as a successful lawyer.
    Plot
Elle Woods, a fashion-focused sorority girl, faces heartbreak when her boyfriend, Warner, breaks up with her before heading to Harvard Law School. Determined to prove herself, Elle scores high on the Law School Admission Test and gains admission to Harvard. Facing skepticism from her East Coast peers, Elle strives to excel in her studies. She secures an internship with respected professor Callahan, who's defending fitness instructor Brooke Windham in a murder trial. Elle exposes inconsistencies in a witness's story, revealing the true culprit. The trial leads to Brooke's acquittal, and Elle's success transforms her relationships and prospects. Rejecting Warner's advances, Elle thrives at Harvard and forms a strong bond with Vivian, who had once been dismissive of her. Elle graduates with honor, and her romance with Emmett, Callahan's junior partner, blossoms, leading to a proposal.

I watched this just the other day with my friends, and seeing it again after so long made me realize how neat it is that basically every woman in this movie sort of remembers how to be a girl's girl. Vivian and Professor Stromwell are probably the more obvious examples with Chutney landing on the opposite end of the scale for her murderous condemnation towards Brooke, but even Elle goes through this growth, because she WAS for a while knowingly making decisions to better encroach on another girl's fiancé before the self-betterment train rolled around and swept her off in a first class seat

-The professor that gave her the hardest time ended up being her strongest advocate

-Everyone thought Elle would be a stuck up, dumb blonde but she was kind, smart, forgiving, good with people and non-judgemental.
-Unlikely pair of friends with Elle and Paulette
-Fashion and Haircare knowledge ended up being the most important info needed to reveal the truth about the case

I think the male mentor who ends up making you feel like they only pretended to believe in you because they wanted to sleep with you is also an incredibly relatable experience for many women. It can be a pretty devastating betrayal.
I think it being the first professor giving her a push and saying she believes in her was the perfect thing. Also just meeting her in the salon like that suddenly offered a glimpse of a future for someone who may have been a lot more like Elle, and dealt with a lot of the same prejudices, than we had realized before.

it's funny asf, endearing, and powerful. it shows a wonderful range of women. it's definitely a women supporting women kind of movie, as you said, but at the same time, it doesn't take itself too seriously. it's super playful about the idea of femininity in a way that we just do not get to see in modern comedy movies. so great!

None of our professors were jerks about it, but the terrifying old woman professor who literally could make people cry in class was so wonderful. She offered to do whatever my friend needed to feel comfortable, including forcing the guy to sit on the other end of the room, recording class for her if she couldn’t bring herself to show up that day, holding extra office hours just for her, etc. Women in male dominated fields know how horrible it can be and young women in those environments are so blessed to have older women as their mentors.

This was such an important movie, because it's one of those rare stories, where love being the goal, is turned into friendship, selflove and accomplishments being the goal and the Emmett subplot was just a that, a subplot and a bonus of Elle's storyline. Same goes for the sequel; Emmett is a great supporting fiancé, but he's just a subplot. Elle Woods is a Supreme Court Barbie!

I think a lot of the "chick flick" attitude can be put down to a combination of bad marketing and over-simplification. Most men assume that "chick flick" refers to either rom-coms or period romance and 90% of those films really are interchangeable except for the actors. Films like Legally Blonde or Miss Congeniality aren't that, but most people aren't literary scholars who know the difference; if the trailer looks like a rom-com, why should they assume this is different than the 4 dozen other films that came out this year with the same "girl tries to win back guy" ad?

I started to law school in 2014 and our first week my contracts professor told us this was probably the movie with the most accurate depiction of law school. Can 1000% confirm. Alsoooo I only made a 155 on my LSAT and had an undergrad GPA of 3.25 and I got a scholarship that covered half my tuition for all 3 years. To be fair, that was Arkansas. But still, should go to show how amazing Elle is with her 4.0 and 179 and how difficult it is to get into Harvard Law.
45:11 I had a similar personality as Elle going into law school, and I got called legally blonde all 3 years (even though I was a brunette the whole time). And people seriously underestimated my intelligence the whole time as well, just because I was chipper and extroverted. Didn’t matter what credentials and accolades and accomplishments I accumulated- the assumptions remained the same.

One thing this movie does which is rarely ever in movies for girls, it told Elle she could be smart AND like pink at the same time. So many films, especially of this time period, wanted to empower women but seemed to say you needed to be a specific KIND of woman to be empowered. Elle Woods being both smart and capable and not giving up the pink while doing so is an extremely strong message. That it's actually ok to be smart AND girly. Girls don't have to choose one of the other.

One thing that you didn't mention that I've thought about more as time has gone on is that Elle had confidence in herself, but her world view was really limited. She had plenty of intelligence and drive, but up until then it had all been channeled in one direction. She wanted that MRS. degree. She had oodles of potential that had never been tapped--her parents seemed to lead a narrow life, with narrow goals for Elle. Not only did others limit her, but for a long time, she limited herself.
So as much as there's a lesson not to judge a book by its cover, there's a lesson not to forget that there can be interesting chapters not yet written.

I think as a woman in the workplace, this story holds up in so many ways. More then just a fluffy fun movie with good morals. It is that, but it also navigates a lot of real issues. I’ve dealt with so much overt sexual harassment as well as men putting me down for being “girlier” then our other female coworkers. Which isn’t even true. I am just as girly as the other women at work, however I am at a lower position and therefore our male coworkers feel comfortable “mentioning” it to me frequently. Elle shows that you can be successful while saying no to sexual advances and while being her self, which includes enjoying stereotypical feminine things.

Elle being so nice and supportive towards other women even when they’re mean to her. Yes they lean into the vain and airhead stereotype of sorority girls, but the girls aren’t mean or spiteful like the stereotype, they support her the entire time she’s applying to school and after too. The “bitchy” rival, Vivian, ends up seeing how nice Elle is and they realize they want to be friends and not fight over a man (who isn’t worth either of them). Paulette being supportive of Elle the whole time, and vice versa with getting her dog bag and a new man. And the professor who is tough on her is still is rooting for her and her potential.

The director apparently wanted this to be a comedy mocking the ~~Blondeness~~ of it all, but then Reese came in and decided to play it straight and the rest of the cast followed her lead and now it's an iconic movie for it

I think the reason I love this channel so much is because even though my father was in my life he wasn’t present… I LOVE movies and I love that these 3 guys sit down and take the time to watch and enjoy movies with us that my dad would never have even thought about watching. The energy is just so good and positive

I knew y'all would love it!! I think for me, part of what makes it so great is, as you pointed out, that it manages to be both extremely funny/silly, and also very heartfelt with some really great messages, all at the same time. That is not an easy thing to do! And the whole cast just did a fabulous job. A classic for a reason! 😊

It’s a small part, but I love that the girls make a few jokes but ultimately work hard to make sure Elle passes the exam even if they don’t completely get it.

What always bothered me about this movie is just how many people at law school instantly assumed she wasn't smart. Like.. *Hello!* ... She got into Harvard Law. That isn't going to happen unless you have the GPA and LSAT scores. And many very smart people can't even pull that off. So she *has* to be smart. Otherwise they're all insulting themselves as well. Because *they* got in.

Fun fact: the guy who plays the friend of Elle who always looked afraid that she slaps? Is the son of Anthony Perkins who portrayed the first Norman Bates in Psycho. He also appeared in the sequel of Psycho portraying the child version of his father's character.

"Better watch out, goin for the knockout, and I won't stop til I'm on top now".... That montage of her studying and improving after Warner straight up said she's not smart enough, that scene is my favorite. Great, great movie --- I didn't expect to like it at first either, but it is SUCH a classic and a "feel-good romp" as a critic might put it XD

Reese was 5 months pregnant in the graduation scene and wearing a wig as she had cut her hair for another role and principal filming had already wrapped. She and Warner's actor were both in England doing other projects and they had to use an English school to film their scenes/closeups for this because the test audience was disappointed that she hadn't gotten her revenge on Warner. So, the friends that were shown closeups of Vivian, Jennifer etc were all filmed during regular filming and all was edited together. To make it look like one scene.

Yeah, Victor Garber often plays a good guy, but he busted that stereotype in this movie by going after Elle. That kind of thing is devastating to a young woman, so Elle's reaction reaction of horror and disappointment was quite realistic. And I agree that it was the first professor who needed to bring her back.
About Victor Garber: he played the King in Whitney Houston's remake of Roger and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Whoopi Goldberg played the Queen and Paolo Montalban, who is Filipino, played the Prince. I was showing this movie to my young nieces and the 5 year old said, "THAT'S their SON??!" Which shows that even a small child understands basic genetics. But she and her sister adored the show, especially Whoopi. She and Victor had some really funny moments together.

Reese Witherspoon FOUGHT for this role.
She had just come off of the film "Election" where she played a villainous bitch so well that it threw a shadow over her and threatened to typecast her. In addition, she was still a young up-and-coming actor, pulling maybe a $quarter-million per film prior to "Legally Blonde".
Witherspoon had been careful to take on interesting and elevating roles, to challenge and develop her acting skills. But when she saw a starring role in "Legally Blonde", she drew on her knowledge of Hollywood history to how Judy Holliday went from playing bit parts as dumb sexy blondes to winning an Oscar for 1950's "Born Yesterday". Holliday took the role with a determination to play the character very intentionally, to push past the stereotype that ruled in the 1950s. Holliday challenged parts of the script and made her role more 3D, and it impacted her career.
Witherspoon saw the character of Elle Woods as being very similar; she was written as a stereotype, but Witherspoon saw a way to make Elle a more substantial character. She saw "Legally Blonde" as her "Born Yesterday", so she kept fighting to land the role.
The studio went through a LOT of top-tier actresses, all of whom turned down the role, some immediately and some eventually. Witherspoon had to meet personally with studio heads to make her case and convince them she had no resemblance to the character she played in "Election". Eventually, she got the role.
"Legally Blonde" did not get Witherspoon the Oscar (that came 4 years later with "Walk the Line"), but it was her first $1million contract and made her a top-tier star. She now commands about $15million a film.
Actually, I would highly recommend "Born Yesterday" for reaction.
"Born Yesterday" fits right alongside "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" and "It's A Wonderful Life" in certain respects. They all have that Frank Capra sensibility that touches on what our nation saw as the American character during its day and has gone so wrong in the recent decade. I won't say much more about "Born Yesterday" than it touches on DC politics and criminality to frame the storyline. Definitely worth viewing.
As much as "Legally Blonde" reminds me of "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" AND "Born Yesterday", "Legally Blonde II" resembles them even more.
By the way, to comment on the issue of being stereotyped as a bodybuilder, just recognize that the foremost icon of bodybuilding is Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was/is no dummy. And he became governor of California!

Interesting to see a group of guys watching this! You all got the not judging a book by its cover and believing in yourself message, but I was surprised you didn't touch more on the how its also about the trials of being a woman, and especially an unapologetically feminine woman like Elle, in professional spaces. Elle's traditionally feminine qualities like her kindness and generostiy, got her labeled as weak or a push over. Her blondeness only really categorized her as "dumb" or frivolous, but the way she was sexualized and demeaned is just part of being a woman. There's also the way Warner just swaps out girlfriends in order to maintain whatever image he wants to give off, like women are accessories to him. But it also portrays sisterhood, not only with her sorority, but with Jennifer Coolidge's character, and with Vivian. She was never mean to anyone who didn't deserve it. And she won without compromising her kindness or principles. What happened with her and Pr. Callahan is all too common. As you also saw something similar happen with Starlight and The Deep in The Boys.
