Yes Terra means earth in galician. They are "pandeireteiras" tradicional percussionists from Galiza a historical nation in northwest spain. There isn't something more ancestral in music that making sound hitting things, even your own body, and this is true for every culture so it's normal tracing it back to Africa where humanity was born

They are singing in Galician. The song is based in a "Alalá", a kind of traditional galician song and with the rythm of "muiñeira", galician traditional dance and song. All mixed with modern musical styles. Into the song there is the sentence "non hai fronteiras" (there's no borders) repited in other Spanish languages: Basque, Asturian, Catalan and Castilian (also known as Spanish).

Tanxugueiras is a trio formed by Aida Tarrío, and the twins Olaia and Sabela Maneiro.
They are from Galicia, northwestern Spain. They almost always sing in Galician, Galicia's own language, although they have sung in Spanish in some performances. They also play the tambourine in many of their performances.
The name of the group comes from the toponymy: it is the name given to farms where badgers (teixugos in galician language) usually roam and that in the area of Fumaces, municipality of Riós (province of Ourense) is called tanxugo instead of from teixugo (which would be the correct form) and hence "tanxugueira".
Until 2021 this group was known in the field of traditional Galician music but throughout 2021 thanks to the videos of the songs MIDAS and FIGA, in which they mix traditional and modern elements, they became famous outside that field.
In the fall of 2021, RTVE, (RadioTelevisión Española) decides to organize a music festival, the Benidorm Fest, to choose the artist and the song that will represent Spain in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest
The Eurovision-Spain portal carried out a consultation among its members and readers about possible candidates. The Tanxugueiras prevailed in the vote. This prompted them to appear at the Benidorm Fest with the song “Terra” that combines Galician folklore with electronic percussion. In December 2021, the video of the song was released and can be seen on CZcams:Tanxugueiras - TERRA (Official Lyric Video). In this video the lyrics of the song are in Galician with subtitles in Spanish and if they do not appear they can be activated in the settings. English subtitles can also be activated.
In January 2022 the Tanxugueiras perform in the Benidorm Fest Final and come in third place. The performance can be seen on CZcams in the video: Tanxugueiras - "Terra" Benidorm Fest 2022 The Grand Final.
The song and the staging are a tribute to an aspect of the tradition and culture of Galicia, the figure of the cantareiras, women who sing, and the pandereteiras, who play the tambourine, which enlivened the “foliada” or nocturnal meeting. of people to have fun, sing and dance.
The phrase "there are no borders" is said in several languages spoken in Spain:
    Galician: Non hai fronteiras
    Basque (Euskera): Ez dago mugarik
    Catalan: No hi ha fronteres
    Asturian (Bable): Nun hai fronteres
Castellano (often named Spanish: No hay fronteras
Sign language, in the last scene of the performance.
In the background images of the stage are scenes of women singing and playing the tambourine and of people dancing.
The song has the structure of a muñeira, (muiñeira in Galician), a traditional Galician melody in which “ailalala” and “ailalelo” abound. Olaia's “aturuxo” almost at the end of the performance is a high-pitched, loud and prolonged cry that is emitted as a sign of joy at festivals and “foliadas” or while doing some agricultural work.
The costumes of the Tanxugueiras are inspired by the traditional Galician gala dress, black with lace and jet decorations and with jet or gold jewels. The makeup simulates the drawings of the lace and the gold leaf on the hair is reminiscent of the gold of the jewels.
Aida is the one wearing the braid, Olaia is the one who throws the “aturuxo” at the end of the performance and Sabela is the one wearing the golden ornament on the left side of her hair.
I suggest you watch the official video in CZcams:Tanxugueiras - TERRA (Official Lyric Video), in what you can activate subtitles in English, to understand the lyrics, listen to it several times, even while doing something everyday, and then watch the Benidorm Fest final performance. CZcams: Tanxugueiras - "Terra" Benidorm Fest 2022 The Grand Final.
I list you some videos of this group published on CZcams in which you will observe an evolution.

Tanxugueiras have released three albums; "TANXUGUEIRAS" (2018), "CONTRAPUNTO" (2019) and "DILUVIO" (2022) and have performed in Spain and abroad.
In the first two albums, "TANXUGUEIRAS" and "CONTRAPUNTO" the songs are exclusively traditional like "O Querer" or "Albedrío" in which the power and coordination of their voices and their mastery of the tambourine can be clearly appreciated.
In their latest album "DILUVIO" (deluge) released on 07/29/2022 they mix Galician folklore with other more modern styles. Of almost all the songs you can find official videos on CZcams where you can set the subtitles in Castilian (Spanish) and in other languages such as Terra, Figa, Midas, Averno, Pano Corado, Desidia, Seghadoras and Fame de odio. For other songs there is only the official audio, such as Arica and Sorora and the instrumentals Treboada and Acougo.
As they point out in their official website, in the album "DILUVIO", the "cantareiras" (galician word that means women who sing) question alleged faults or capital sins installed in society. To the seven "original": envy (Figa), greed (Midas), anger (Averno), lust (Pano Corado), laziness (Desidia), gluttony (Fame de odio), pride (Arica) they add three more: homogeneity (Terra), hostility (Seghadoras) and patriarchy (Sorora). Beliefs that after the storm (Treboada) they have decided to turn into transforming lessons for life: a deluge of self-acceptance, diversity, free love, empowerment and recovery of traditions in modern times.
In these and upcoming dates they are giving concerts throughout Spain solo or in festivals with other artists presenting their "Midas" tour. On their official website, which can be configured in Galician or Spanish languages, there is information about the band, their albums and concerts of the current tour.
On CZcams there are many videos of the tour, some of them quite good like their concert in Cadiz, To see it type in CZcams: Concierto Tanxugueiras (Plaza de San Antonio - Jueves de Carnaval 2022)

  • @Jopliner100
    @Jopliner100 Před 2 lety +30

Hello Tracie. I'm about to explain about this song and I will probably write a lot so I apologize in advance.
First, a little bit of context. In Spain there are 4 official languages: Spanish (spoken in the whole country), Català-Valenciá (NE and East of Spain), Euskara (in north Spain in the area near the border with France) and Galego (NW Spain). The latter is the language Tanxugueiras sing in. (FYI, you can pronounce the name as Tan-shoo-gay-ras)
In Galicia, the region where Galego is spoken, there is a strong celtic influence both in culture and music. There was the tradition of singing and playing instruments to celebrate the end of the work day, but being a rural region, people didn't have musical knowledge, so they used to play percussion (tambourines and such) to accompany the chants, which were improvised, mainly sung by women, with free rythm, and used to have one or several verses that said "ailalalá". That's why this kind of song is called an "alalá", and that's also the reason why it sounds so tribal. The cry is something people on galicia did (and still do) to show the joy and excitement of the dancing and singing, and is also seen as a war cry (figuratively speaking). It is called "aturuxo" (a-too-rho-sho)
The dance is a muiñeira, the most typical rythm of Galicia.
The song revolves around the fact that this ancestral way of making music came to our days and Tanxugueiras celebrate not only that but the fact that from now on, that tradition will be inmortal (the verses "veñen pra quedar esas bravas gorxas de fondo cantar" mean that those brave deep voices are coming to stay for good, as in the voices of that old women that had passed the traditional chants onto them).
Tanxugueiras are a traditional folk group, that mixes the traditional style of galician folklore with modern rythms. In this performance they took the traditional clothes and jewerly women used for partying on remarked or holly days, and turned them into their modern outfits and make up while the dancers use the traditional womens skirt, as a tribute for those singers and dancers who, without even knowing to write, create this distinctive type of music.
The fact that you feel something familiar is because, as in most of traditional music, the singing and dancing come from the deepest cultural roots which, in fact, come from the earth, hence the name of the song. Besides, Terra also means "land" so there's a double meaning.
Last, but not least, the last verse of the chorus says "there are no borders" in all the languages listed above plus Asturianu, (another language in north Spain that doesn't have official status yet) and, at the end of the song, they say the verse while they do the moves of sign language for deaf people.
Such an inclusive song, that can be felt so deeply by people of diferent places (as you did), means that, indeed, there are no borders.

About the reason this song was not chosen, I could explain to you the whole process with the jury and the people vote, but let's just say that economic power have had much to do in the election, since Chanel was suported by a strong and powerfull music company and the most suported acts (Tanxugueiras and Rigoberta Bandini) are self-produced.

The word you are probably looking for is atavistic. It reminds you of what your mother taught you and also your grandmother. And that's what the song is about. The legacy of tradition that all our mothers have left us, which as far as I can see is the same in all cultures and countries. As the song says, "Non hai fronteiras", "There are no borders" when it comes to the tradition that our mothers and our mothers' mothers have left us. It is all the same. And that is wonderful.

I think it feels familiar because it is rooted in folk (in this case, from Galicia region, in the NW of Spain). In my opinion, any form of folk art, although connected to a specific land and culture by definition, is universal at the same time. It appeals to something deep within all of us.

Hm, after the last one from Benidorm 22 I'm a bit sceptical on what to expect here, but as I never heard about TANXUGUEIRAS "TERRA" I'll go into this one blind and open minded, I'm ready to embrace or disgust, whatever it will be for me... go!

    • @Hundhammer
      @Hundhammer Před 2 lety +1

Interesting start... again not watching, just listening and giving my unfiltered first impressions immediately... like it so far... much better than the last one... haunting... like some chant or ritual... mesmerizing... yes, would be interesting to know about the lyrics... powerful! ... all these layered voices... oh no! so short again, guess they have a limited time to perform ... yes, this was quite good!
      - Oh, I could give you some suggestions for great african music I love as well, would be interesting to see what you think about it... anyway you really should get into Little Simz 'Point And Kill' - of course a very 'modern' not traditional perception of what her Nigerian heritage means to her... great video as well imo, shot in Nigeria... I'd really be amazed if you could not connect and relate to this great sis of yours, I love her! She released a "Behind the scenes" of the video as well, haven't seen it yet, will go and watch it, anyway if so you should react on the MV and watch the behind the scenes after that privately if you dig the song - I almost know certainly that you would... and all her other stuff, best hip hop you can get in my opinion... quite versatile as well, different vibes on every track, but still always truely herself, great artist, maybe you would add her to your weekend 'to do list' if theres some open space still... would be a great sunday morning, you'll fly for the rest of the day... next after "Point And Kill" would be "woman", so relatable for me though I'm a man - how much more for you...? I'll actually watch your reaction right now, but I think there will not be much more to say, maybe about the stage and actual performance of what I just perceived acoustically now... - ah ja, forgot to mention: Coldplay visuals were amazing, great way to visualize the song, gave me some M.C. Escher vibes, those twisted stairs, those worlds drifting apart... didn't come to speak about this yet (why would I when it's about music...) but I'm (or used to be?) an artist, not a musician, but in fine arts (painting mostly and calligraphy...) so I got quite a background on history of fine arts as well, knowing hundreds of painters, graphicists, sculptors etc. and thus often have some ideas about visuals, who might have inspired these etc... adore Escher so this is a compliment, the Coldplay video was exceptionally well done... now let me watch this performance (and you, can't get enough of looking at you in awe...)
