Dađi and gagnamagniđ (spelled out dah-dee and kakna-magnith)They are all related! The woman who was playing the “round keyguitar” was the main singer’s wife. Also! This group debuted for Eurovision in 2020 when they won their icelandic national song contest which chose them as representatives for Eurovision 2020 AND that song was about their baby! (Called “Think about things” and its such a recommendation for a bop) (but obviously covid happened and so they never got to perform the song live but were invited to perform the next year with a new song) anyways this song was about his marriage with his wife and how it just keeps getting better no matter how long it has been (hence the title 10 years)

Eurovision isn't technically just a contest for European countries, it's open to any member of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). It's a common misconception, but mistaken nonetheless.
Australia got invited to join fair and square, because they paid their dues, had been massive fans of ESC for decades, asked nicely, and were okay with a few special rules in case they won. I have no issue welcoming more fans to the party. They've been a joy to have in the contest so far - I just hope we get some more cultural tunes from them, honestly. Would love to see some aboriginal flare on the ESC stage, since the whole purpose is to tie us together across cultures through a shared love of a good tune.

  • @OakSky

"Panek" is definitely a Polish family name. I've checked its distribution across Poland and it's most common in the south, so perhaps that's why it's also associated with Czechia. However, in Czechia, it doesn't seem to be nearly as common, and most of the people with this surname live near the Czech-Polish border, so it all makes sense.
As for Polish stuff... We usually don't do that well in Eurovision. The best result (runner-up) was in 1994 when we debuted at the ESC. After that Poland reached the TOP10 only twice and failed to qualify to the final multiple times. However, in the past few years, we did quite well in Junior Eurovision, winning the contest back-to-back in 2018 and 2019, and being the runner-up in 2021.
If I had to suggest any Polish performances from Eurovision, I would probably go with the most successful ones, so:
    1. 1994 - Edyta Górniak / To nie ja (2nd place)
    2. 2003 - Ich Troje / Keine Grenzen - Żadnych granic (7th place)
    3. 2016 - Michał Szpak / Color of Your Life (8th place, 3rd in the televoting)
    4. 1997 - Anna Maria Jopek / Ale jestem (11th place)
    5. 2022 - Ochman / River (12th place)
    Two honorable mentions:
2014 - Donatan & Cleo / My Słowianie - We Are Slavic, which is (in)famous for butter-churning on the stage :P
2023 - Blanka / Solo, as the singer and her "Bejba" quickly became a meme :P

I'm waving back as I look out the window on my 350 year-old street up at the 200 year-old National Monument, and beyond that the rump of our 350 million year-old volcano in the middle of the city. I would say 'come to Edinburgh (Ed-in-buru) to see all the lovely old buildings' except that the newest building they just built is a huge brown metal hotel with a curly ribbon top which looks like some giant cow has come along and taken a large dump on the city skyline, and which if you are anywhere near it looks like the giant Stay-Puff pastry man from Ghostbusters looming round the corner above you... Panek is indeed a surname in Poland, though not very popular, around 8600 people registered (for a comparison the most popular surname is Nowak and there are around 150000 people with that name). "Panek" as a word is a diminutive form of the word "Pan". "Pan" nowadays is mostly just a male honorific like Mr. in English, but it used to mean more like a lord, landowner. So in that case "Panek" is a "little lord", not in the sense of his stature, but in the sense of someone who does have something to his name, but isn't from the higher nobility with thousands upon thousands of acres of land. There was even a word "półpanek", half-panek, but it was used just in a derogatory way, some peasant could say, not only I have to deal with my Pan, but also that Panek, and now also that dumb półpanek that barely has a house and a cow but acts as if he's a king. :D

PS maybe you could do a weekly with Polish music? :) For example with Męskie Granie Orchiestra songs. Męskie Granie is a summer music festival in Poland and every year they record a song to promote this festival, every year someone else sings. TOP5 by views on YT would be
      5. „Wataha” - Tomasz Organek, O.S.T.R. i Dawid Podsiadło - 31 000 000 views
      4. „Supermoce” - Igo, Mrozu i Vito Bambino - 39 000 000 views
      3. „Sobie i Wam” - Nosowska, Igo, Tomasz Organek i Krzysztof Zalewski - 54 000 000 views
      2. „I Ciebie też, bardzo” - Daria Zawiałow, Dawid Podsiadło i Vito Bambino - 72 000 000 views
      1. „Początek” - Kortez, Dawid Podsiadło i Krzysztof Zalewski - 144 000 000 views

About the same time when the film about Eurovision came out, where Iceland win is debated, how could they ever arrange the coming eurovision if they won? Right, there come this group and could have just won for Iceland 2020 if not for Covid. Bizarre!

Penic does not sound Czech to me, although the original spelling might make it closer. In general, surnames ending in -ic sound more South Slavic (the Balkans basically, former Yugoslavian countries). Qualifications: I am Czech and I love languages.

They made those keytars themselves before the contest. Since you don't actually play any instruments live (only singing is live), they didn't had to be functional.

My dudes! I have compiled a list of Top 5 Alternative songs (recent-ish years*) in case you want a break from doing the straight ranked Top 5 for each year.
    5. Under The Ladder by MELOVIN (Ukraine 2018) | Genre: Emo / Pop Rock
    4. Hatrið Mun Sigra [transl. Hatred Will Prevail] by Hatari (Iceland 2019) | Genre: Industrial
    3. Promise by Voyager (Australia 2023) | Genre: Progressive Rock
    2. Dark Side by Blind Channel (Finland 2021) | Genre: Nu Metal
    1. Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi (Finland 2006) | Genre: Hard Rock / Heavy Metal
Made it a playlist for you too: czcams.com/play/PL150w6WMSHX98fixnVUX_xz61mas3F9g7.html&si=YxKxuA-PYjshTi1B
    * Eurovision fans will notice a very notable exception from this list, and that's because they placed in the "Top 5" of their year recently, and also crossed-over to the American market, so I think there's a good chance you'll see their performance separately.
Doing Top 5's based on genre like this might also give a more broad view of the types of songs that go to Eurovision, since the Top 5 each year are usually very consumer-friendly (always exceptions to this of course).

Nah...the last ones to get their gifts are the Spanish. Not because they are naughty but because its the three wise Kings that bring them their gifts so they have to wait until Epihany (the visitation of the kings to Jesus) on the 6th of January
