I've been doing this for 60 yrs. I think you must've been following me ariund listening to my mutterings.
Every piece of advise you gave in rhis video is spot f**kin' on. Please don't stop.
Daniel, not only do I learn something new from your videos, but I end up unexpectedly laughing. I appreciate -Your- honesty and humor.
Thank you so much for this. It's so refreshing and encouraging to hear a photographer critique the IG/real-time share culture. I'm planning my second personal project, and am so glad I came across your video.
That’s so great to hear!
I am big fan of getting prints, not a photographer, can't afford a camera for now so I do with whatever I can using Smartphone, before that I had very basic Point & Shoot. In my graphics and web designing days my portfolio was in form of a magazine. I still have one next to me. Printed and bind at home.
When everyone started using Laptops and Tablets to show off their Portfolio, I formed a printed book of web designs. My partners and everyone else laughed good at that act. We secured over 70 projects within 2 months in times when not one company was getting their websites done.
And yes in days when everyone using papers, I was using CD and USBs too.
And these are great gifts. I was a part of social group, we used to go to hospitals and shelter homes, I took pictures and videos of friends. Then the lead person who started all of that had a birthday and I printed a book of those pictures to her.
Thank you for this. Iv been shooting for clients 3 years now, and I finally decided to start my own first project.
👍👍👍
Dan's aura comes across as a mix of the (low key) best/mature qualities of Rob Lowe, and the insightful/perceptive communication of Jason Bateman.
The messages Dan offers are worth taking to heart.
haha great combination -- the's the real deal.
I could not have watched this video at a better time, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just an enthusiastic amateur at the moment, on furlough, but have been wanting to take a chance and start a long term reportage/documentary project(s). Now, after watching this video by Daniel, I feel inspired to do so. Just simple, every day, no nonsense advice from a talented guy, just priceless. Oh, and a good reason to watch "Under Fire" and "Salvador"!!! Many, many thanks...
Amateur, in many ways. Is the place to be
@@DANIELMILNOR505 Excellent!!!
Dan, have you ever heard of "Oblique Strategies"? Created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. It came to mind when you were talking about returning to a job and asking more questions.
Great advice Dan. Just love your straight talking. There should be more people like you in the world.
Dan is the man!
All my projects are on hold, social media withdrawn, and it's OK. Every experience is leading the most fulfilling project that lies ahead. And your videos are laying the groundwork. Thanks.
Absolute gold.
Very inspiring, down-to-earth, and entertaining!
The fastest glasses in photography.
You earned them Mr. M, if anyone.
That basically telling it how it is, can be such a revelation, tells you something about the amount of BS in this realm.
Watched from start to finish, playlisted it, and will definitely refer back to it over the course of my third project, which will definitely NOT be rushed. I'm giving myself a deadline of summer 2023, rather than the 12 months I gave for my first two projects, which were fun, but in retrospect too rushed. And the fact that I won't now join Instagram should save me some aggravation too, so thanks for that advice as well.
Wow: I'm speechless! thanks!
Dan, I have been watching a number of your videos and now it is time to say a BIG THANK YOU for all your dedication, engagement and enthusiasm to share your knowledge, experience and wisdom.
🙏
that was.....a life lesson! please moreeeee!!!! thank you
More to come! tune in tomorrow at 10AM in fact!
Milnor rocks!!! Great food for thought.
Absolutely!
Soooooooo good and helpful, thanks Dan!!
Thank you so much Daniel for taking time and making these videos. You are an excellent speaker and your thoughts are incredibly cohesive. Your experience and willingness to share is mind blowing. Please don't stop creating. Looking forward to many more.
Glad you like them!
Amazing, it is an eye opener for me who is planning to start couple of projects. Thanks all the great tips.
🙏
At at turning point... I think this video, and the the one before it, might have changed my life. I'll come back and let you know. No rush! Meanwhile, thank you ever so much!
Amazing🙏 let us know how it did!
I saw both of those movies, and loved both of them.
👍
Just wow
bam!
Thanks, Dan. I have a project in mind. these tips are fabulously helpful.
I like the last one, take your time and don't rush. Thks again Dan!
Absolutely fantastic, this is just what I needed. Thank you!
Thanks for depriving yourself of sleep so we could watch and learn (be enterTRAINED?!) with some well considered tips and non-sugar coated advice. The giving of prints - as mentioned - is absolutely paramount. I was in Sicily in 2018 in a very small town called Randazzo (not too far from Catania). Down a tiny side street, I came across two women during siesta. I mumbled my way through some very basic and butchered Italian to introduce myself and ask permission to take their portraits. They were neighbours and had been best friends for 142 years or something like that. Their English was worse than my Italian but hand and facial gestures speak many languages and I took two frames. When I got home to Australia I saw the image of these woman clearly showed their address. I mailed them two 5 x 7 prints (a copy for each of the women). Three months later, I received a hand written letter from the son of one of the women to say my letter and print had arrived and was proudly on display on the table in their hallway at home. He apologised for the delay in writing to me but wanted to emphasise how pleased and chuffed his mother was to receive my photograph of them. A long winded explanation why I make pictures but I write it to emphasise your point(s) and to applaud people like you for keeping it real.
Cheers, David.
That right there is what it is all about. Slow coms. Meaning
Love these speeches... im searching for a project to pursue
I've probably watched this 3 times now and continue to learn new things. Great information, Dan!
This series was incredible. Thank you so much.
👍
Daniel. That was a fantastic helpful video which came at exactly the right time for me. Thanks man 👍
Thank you again for sharing your insights, motivation and wise words. You really are one of the better teachers out there. No BS - just good, honest advice.
👍
Thanks for this video. Keep safe and healthy. Best regards from Portugal
great ideas and suggestions, thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Welcome!
Love hearing your wealth of knowledge, and common sense explanations.
Glad you enjoy it!
So much value from this video, really thankful for the quality of this film
🙏
Love the "reader" tip. How true.
👍
Thanks you very much for sharing your knowledge :D
These two films were exactly what I needed, thank you so much !
Great to hear!
This is great value, thank you very much!
🙏
What a neat video! Thank you!
Thanks for the tips, excellent points and definitely I will apply the ones that I need in my photo project
👍
I lived in Orange County for 16 years starting in 1987. Graduated high school in 1989. I took a couple of photography classes at Orange Coast College back then in 90/91 time frame. Listening to you, I feel like we lived there around the same time. Did you take any classes at OCC around then?
No but I was over there from time to time. I lived a mile away
I enjoyed this very much. You make some excellent points, and provided some genuine inspiration. Thanks for posting this . . . , and Part 1!!!😃👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I went out to shoot something I found interesting last year and came out with some of the work I'm most proud of and the experience of being there was just fenomenal. I was already thinking of continuing on with that theme when this whole COVID thing is behind us. Now I'm moving (very) far away and your videos have given me the perfect motivation to do it and further the idea / project. Thank you.
great Alex, good luck with it!
Good luck. Take it slow. Covid is going to be around for a while so we have to be patient in new ways
@@DANIELMILNOR505 thank you! It involves hospitals, so I'm in no hurry (but very inspired nonetheless)...
This is stellar advice. I'm a filmmaker rather than a photographer and the insights shared here are incredibly valuable even to me. Thank you.
Great to hear!
Great stuff brother...
Much appreciated
Loved this from start to finish!
awesome! What sparked the most for you?
@@marcsilber I just found it inspirational and engaging. Thank you! I also find it the most interesting side of photography. In a gear orientated world where everyone is trying to take the next 'best' shot, this was entirely refreshing! Daniel's message throughout, seemed to ring true. I also find now that I'm another step closer to advancing my photographic intentions ;)
So great to hear! That’s exactly what AYP is all about
❤️❤️❤️ Thank you sharing this...❤️❤️❤️
No problem 😊
Advancing Your Photography ❤️❤️❤️🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thank you very much, I do photography as hobby and I would like to have a photography project and print it just for fun, this info is just what I was looking for :)
The clearest, honest, and most true to life photographer on here....film is not retro, film is photography, digital is just digital, enough said! fantastic presentation.
🙏
I’m impressed how few views you have. Been following for long time and the content quality is just amazing
help us by spreading the word!
Advancing Your Photography i always share great content to people around me
Hi Daniel, I really appreciate the time you have spent on educating me/us on the essence of photography. Your views make a lot of sense and have changed the way I see and use my camera. While I've owned a camera for as long as I can remember, your inspiration has given more purpose and direction to my hobby. Unfortunately, my question is a technical one here. I've heard you mention many times that all you take is a 35mm and 50mm into the field. For me, shooting mostly digital with an APS-C sensor this would equate to 55mm and 80mm focal length due to the 1.6x scaling factor. If you are talking about your Fuji X-T2 is this the same for you or do you reduce to 22mm and 35mm lenses which would scale up to 35mm, 50mm on an APS-C sensor? Again, sorry for the technical gear question, I know you must be crying inside as you read this. If it is any consolation I have started my first test book and am looking forward to sending it in for printing.
As always, very wise words. Agree 100%, particularly with your feelings about instagram. I was not even thinking about doing any long term project but with these two videos I am really excited about some ideas that came to my mind. It has been critical to realize about something as simple as the fact that "I'm not in a rush no one cares". Liberating.
I've got a question that maybe you would like to answer. What happens, from a legal point of view, when you photograph people in a project that you wants to publish/share? Should you ask for publication permission? That would be a great hurdle in people-involved projects.
Again many thanks for these videos that are awesome!
Thank you Daniel. It was a good piece of information collected over a decade time. Really, it was highly motivating and inspirational. Certainly, it has offered me a new perspective to look at photography beyond 'likes' of instagrammers.: Sandeep Datta, India
Thank you. Twice over.
🙏🙏
a lot of amazing tips thank you
i want to ask what you mean "multi technique" means? i could only understand as having a consistent "style" but maybe that's in the editing stage of consistent color or only black and white or consistent focal length like using a prime?
I agree 100% with the instagrammers and how they ruin it for everyone coming after them. You couldn't *pay* me to go to places that are now overrun, no matter how nice they may be (Bali, Cappadocia, Marrakech.....). Can you please provide more details on you possible Albania workshop next year?
We are pushed back to 2021. But will keep people posted. Straw hats, vans, National parks and any trendy location. IG has impacted all
🙏
Thank you!! Some great take-aways! Just curious: How much post-processing do you do with your printed material?
Sounds like good advice to me
🤟
Great tips as always. Dan, Regarding bringing back prints: How do you do it logistically? I was always intrigued by how could I get people to cooperate. Do you go back to all the places you shot just for that? Maybe giving a Polaroid when shooting?
I am often going back to the same place. Otherwise, mailing addresses
Nice one :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Dan, You regretted using the Pentax 645 after the fact. What about this system did you like enough to choose it in the first place?
What was the issue with the Pentax645? The 645nii film cameras is epic
That lens is a bazooka, and this info is solid, inspiring, and motivating. I do have a question, but allow me to put it in context first: I want to make photo essays. I want to tell stories through photography. I'm not interested in working for news agencies. My question, in your opinion, can someone make a living doing photo essay projects, or is it a passion project and not a career?
Very difficult and it will mostly suck the enjoyment out of the entire experience.
Very difficult. Not impossible but requires non traditional method.
Is Daniel coming at this from a how to be a better hobbyist point of view or do how to launch a career in photo journalism?
either way
I would stay hobbyist but that’s just my opinions
Why was it a mistake to return with the Pentax 645?
I immediately ran to Wikipedia: "I don't know if Bob Barker is still on 'the price is right' but is he even alive?". Well, yeah.
he is?
A legend...
Deja vu?

Forget the glasses. What's with the jacket inside? 😁
🙃
Cold here still. Well, was when I made this.
Is this your channel or are you a guest?
Is all about him, is more like a "look at me" thing...
"didnt end well"
youre hilarious
Those pictures are not random lucky shots. He has a good story about them. Makes you think......
yes indeed
