- In today's video we're teaching you how to paint a Tyranid Harpy, using just drybrushing (pretty much)! These techniques can be used for all shelled or skinned Warhammer and Warhammer 40k miniatures though, and are especially relevant to the large monsters we all love so much!
The majority of this model was painted with the XL Drybrush from our Series D range, pick yours up here, now! (Shipping worldwide) store.artis-opus.com/collecti...
This video goes pretty in depth, we've provided a lot of extra information on where you may go wrong with this techique, how to spot it, and how to fix mistakes (I make a big one... blobbing white all over my previous, just-finished wings!). The painting tips and tricks come thick and fast, and the end result is great!
Let us know below what you'd like to see us use the 'soft' (skin) or 'hard' (shell) drybrushing technique on next!

“More poking, less stroking” this can be applied to many of life’s hardships
100% dude, at least no one's forgetting my phrases, if I can carry on with the 'oooeeers' :)
Me before using any of the artis opus brushes I got for christmas: watch every drybrush tutorial to make sure I keep those brushes alive
Absolutely! Check out our latest specifically, it's huge, any questions let us know there, enjoy!
That looked fantastic. Love the “how to fix a fault section” great stuff.
Thanks dude
Agreed! How to fix mistakes are so great when they're in.
yes, that was funny but it hurts me too😍.
16:25 that wash really helped.
I like the contrast between the more detailed flesh and the very subdued armor shell.
Thanks buddy, exactly what I was going for… plus the simpler shell saved a bit of time towards the end
"These bristles (...) you don't want them wet, but you want them not-dry"
I feel you ;)
What did you think? Did you know you can use drybrushes to achieve 'soft' effects like our Harpy wings? What should we drybrush next?

I'd be interested to see a demo of dry brushing a Maw Krusha. I have the kit and was planning on using it to practice my dry brushing. It would be really helpful to see a demo.
That is great that the mistake happened. It shows that even the best painters can make errors. It also shows how to fix the mistake.
Cheers dude, I make them all the time! It's very rarely as bad/unfixable as you think :)
This old dog loves learning new tricks fantastic paint job 👍👍
Awesome wings, Sir! Love how stippling helps build up layers and transitions!
I'm betting back to painting miniatures and hopefully play a game or two and I recently discovered this channel. You sir are the Bob Ross of miniature painting!
This is a title also often given to goobertown hobbies
I’d love to see you paint a lord of change please
I do own one... Would just have to build it!
Looks really good! And I gotto say I love that you keep the misstakes in the video, good to know even the pros do mess up from time to time =)
'From time to time' is very complimentary! They never stop, especially painting quick :)
Great video! You have made dry brushing my go to for half of my work anymore.
Oh my gosh... the utter madlad finally painted some Nids!!
It has been an awfully long time coming, hopefully worth the wait!
@@ArtisOpus best things come to those who wait ;)
big huggles on the white splooshes !
:D Thanks, Fleur, I'd say lesson-learned, but it will happen again, I'm sure!
Super rad! Very excited for grumpy cabbage!!
Great vid, I love seeing such different techniques and going crazy with a large brush and some dilute paint is a lot less scary than trying to glaze 500 layers over 10 hours!
Yes, Joe! Couldn't agree more, it's so applicable to army painting, especially! Plus if you don't risk 100% opaque mistakes you save so much time, so it's a great middle-ground between glazing, and block-colour techniques :)
Fantastic tutorial. I have an old all metal Prince Imrik on dragon and the membranes on that are painful, same with my Archaon and my Bloodthirster. This is great inspiration for that! I'll be using it on all my winged beasties.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
I've got my D Series brushes on the way, looking forward to trying this out with my Thousand Sons Demon Prince model 💙💛💙
Found your channel randomly looking at Dungeons and lasers stuff. I love your approach. The whole drybrushq thing is something I can do!
It 100% is mate, let us know if you have any questions or queries, in another comment thread, YT is bad for notifications!
That's really cool😍. Love all your videos👍👍👍
Thanks, my dude!
As soon as the Harpy is available again, I will paint the model according to your instructions. Find it really well done. Maybe I'll omit one or the other step, but it will be very close to your video 👍🏻
Love your videos, gives me great inspiration to paint better ,Be awesome to see your paint Archaon Everchosen. Great stuff.
Great video! Really helpful, and as mentioned, keeping in the mistake fix made it even better. Roll on grumpy cabbage!
Thanks, David! :)
Hi Byron, brand new to your channel just love your approach I have taken the plunge and invested in some of your product's to try and achieve somewhere near your level this video was excellent so easy to follow, have the inspiration now to do my Be' Lakor wings many thanks for sharing kind regards from a cranky geriatric👍👍👍.
Thank you. I have been working on a set of scourges for a few days now and the bat wings didn't look good till I tried this technique.
Yes, Kenneth! Glad to be of help, dude:).
Nice! Can't wait to test my brushes out now! Perfect timing for this guide! Ha.
Yes, my man, you try our brushes, I'll try your scheme strategies, loved your recent vid, really different approach!
Have fun. These brushes are amazing 🎉🌋🕺
Would love to see these techniques used on some smaller Tyranid. As really wanna grab some brush and give it ago on small guys.
A lot of people I have seen attempt this drybrush method have tried using shortcuts and wonder why they aren't getting similar results. They aren't remembering when to moisten the brush, which direction to draw the bristles, when to buff, when to use diluted paint vs very dry paint, etc. This may be "drybrushing", but it's an advanced methodology. Drybrushing (and washing) isn't just for beginners.
Well, it is very procedural... If people don't ignore the steps and YOLO it is absolutely beginner friendly.
The problems come when people stop concentrating on following the method, it is systematic, you just need to follow the steps, with a little understanding of why they are what they are.
The last bit is something we will introduce more, the theory is important
Awesome Byron.
Cheers, Chuck!
Amazing tutorial. I'll be looking forward to your tutorial on how to transfer from GW pots to propper dropper bottles 🤣
Burnnnn! :D Cheers, dude
I cant be the only person who wants to see a painted archaon, maybe for your slaneesh army ?
That purple edge highlight is a cracking result for the relatively little effort put in. 👍
I thought so, too! I fell I'm on the brink of a new series D unlock, it's been a while!
@@ArtisOpus how do you get the purple edge highlight on the carapace and its not dusty at all, is that the moisture pot?
Those drybrushing details on the Tyranids Harpy wings are perfect enough.
I have sone Dark Elfs Harpies to paint in the near future for upcoming project. This method would be use for smaller models?
Absolutely dude, just go a bit slower and careful with a smaller brush, our new Series D XS+ and S+ are great for infantry
I got a painting suggestion, that i'd like to see you do: Vorgaroth the Scarred
Bookmarking this. 🙂
Enjoy! Hope it comes in useful :)
Looks good mr Opus 😉🐶😊
Excellent video as always Byron. Sorry I have not been around much lately. Not managed to get any painting done for ages now. Feeling withdrawal symptons
No worries man, time to get back! Have the computer games tempted you away? :D
@@ArtisOpus work and a new dog have unfortunately lol
Amazing video as always Byron!
In the start (~12s) you showed the wings. 1 wing, dark red/purple with water stains. Would reaaaally like to see some tutorials on that look (the water stains i mean^^)! :D
Oh really? It was just experimenting, really - it's basically paint + water, so you encourage the tidal marks/tea stains/coffee stains, normally you'd do everything possible to avoid them (use of washes, mediums, transparency), but if you want them it's pretty easy to reverse-engineer!
@@ArtisOpus Yepp really!
I can see some really nice use for it. Painted glass windows (like church windows) etc. Also i think it can be used for some great effects on large vehicles/monsters and camo. Maybe even lightning/sunshine.
Just never figured out an "easy" way to do it. Especially not with those clear "salt" crystal shapes.
I always think that effect works well for wet forms of weathering
NIDS! for ten thousand years we have waited and now the glorious day is here! Those wings look awesome! Definitely going to be trying this out on my next set of wings (hive tyrant). perhaps an odd question, but how do you approach the bulk of the tail? I've been finding mine look a little bland compared to the rest of my mini. Do you highlight parts of it? I do wish there was more texture on them to break it up a bit
Good question mate, just stipple it, and make the most of the texture at either end, wash, and then drybrush the ends and the 'top' up a little, be patient, you'll be surprised how well it turns out :)
Love the paint job! Going to try it on my Hive Tyrant. Would the chitin and bone technique transfer over to the smaller units like Warriors? I’m pretty new to dry brushing I just don’t want it to look muddled when done on a smaller scale.
Hey man, absolutely, just use our smaller brushes, and slow down a little. Medium and Small would probably work fine.
Can you do a dry brushed scheme for raven guard????
"This is why people like dropper bottles..."
Yeah, except that the tip sometimes pops clean off while dropping paint onto the palette, the tip gets easily clogged, the paint separates way worse in the narrower bottles with pre-diluted paint where I can't control the density, etc. There are pros and cons to each.
"But Pro Acryl tips don't clog!" Nope, but they make an absolute mess every time you twist them closed. That aside, these have definitely been one of the better designs to-date.
No one makes the perfect bottle design yet.
Amen amen
"More poking, less stroking"
PHRASING
And by that you mean 'Byron, that's great phrasing, I'll never forget it!'...? :D
Really helpful! For someone who does not have your fancy texture palette, is there any common household material that would be similar? I’ve just been using paper towel but it seems to dry out the paint much faster.
Hey man, grab a texture palette :) they last forever and we ship worldwide!
Don't use a towel, they're too absorbent and will dry out your paint, they pull moisture. For me they're a hang up from old tutorials in magazines. You'd be better on a primed surface
These videos are amazing. I'm getting back into painting 40k and drybrushing is a brilliant and easy technique I often do to make up for the lack of expertise... I never thought it could be applied to such a professional looking level.
Is one drop of water in the dampener really enough for an entire model session?
Not at all, it depends entirely on your climate! Temperature/humdity play a large part, as they do with all painting. If it gets low just add a drop (low: it stops doing anything)
Also thank you for your kind comments, 40k is asking for a good drybrushing revival, it's such an overlooked technique, especially done carefully.
Triggered by the GW pot leakage, I've felt this pain one time too many
ppl are funny, down voting the video, it isn't even out yet cmn you guys
Maybe they know we lied... it was 98.4% :|
@@ArtisOpus hahaha 😆 😂 🤣
it's probably because of the clickbaity titles/thumbnails or because it's one of those videos that, as you pointed out, aren't available straight away. i don't understand why this channels keeps using the clickbait-oriented titles and thumbnails - it feels so out of place on a channel like this, with its mostly mature audience. then there's the problem with "scheduled" videos. when i see a video in my feed i assume i can watch it straight away - but then when i click on it it says i have to wait 17 hours or whatever the time would be, which is extremely annoying. luckily, out of the hundreds of channels i follow, only a very few use the scheduled videos-thingy. but yeah, it always drives me nuts :P
i'm not petty enough to leave a dislike on this video for the reasons i mentioned though, but i certainly understand if people would. if the clickbaitiness gets too out of hand i typically just unsubscribe from that channel (squidmar's videos i barely watch anymore for that reason, as an example :P).
I've found that, whenever I get paint on my fingers, I can get the paint off of them by washing my hands. 😄
Valuable info!
How about some Nighthaunt models next ?
Man, such GORGEOUS purple wings... And then you ruined them. :D (Just kidding, the result is great, it's just that I loved the purple.)
:D thanks buddy!
That's it...... I'll always ses it as an Angry cabbage 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Never thought of drybrushing a polyurethane primer for a basecoat, especially after a first level of airbrushed primer. Why would you do that instead of using normal acrylic paint?
Watch out for those spikey bits when twirling Tyranids. You could lose an eye!
Respect 🙏 just a little question
what do you use to clean your brushes between 2 drybrushes?
Hey dude, we make some brush cleaning liquids, as well as our soap. The moat important thing however is the during painting process of regular dampening pad use, and using it to help paint exit... which happens to both paint your minis, and clean and maintain the brushes condition :)
Between colours I just tend to work off excess on the texture palette
@@ArtisOpus Thanks you !! You are the best and i run to buy a dampening pas to artis opus site 🙏😜
A quick question for anybody who ordered recently. How long does it take for the Series d brushes to be sent out after ordering? To the US.
Thanks for the question, Joe!
Standard Orders: Shipping next working day, generally
Customised orders: 2-3 (to accommodate drying times)
Would like to see some sisters of battle, as I would like to see the process on that (totally wanting to start a sisters army and nids army)
Vehicles? I think I have one in the cupboard of shame :D
@@ArtisOpus anything as I need an excuse (inspiration to buy some 🤣🤣🤣)
Hey Byron, got a few things that happened lately when dry-brushing. My dry-brushed layer disappeared for like 3/4 when i washed over it and sometimes the result looks really chalky although i think that the my brush is damp enough. And could you somehow in any way, shape or form dry-brush with oil paints. Thx for yet another great tuto. Keep teaching us, O great Master of the Dry-brush.
Hey, dude, mhhmmmm.
#1 is easy - more medium in your wash
#2 is less easy, it's either physical texture, or your 'jumping' between darker and lighter colours too fast. Do you have a pic?
LMK in another comment, YT isn't good for notifications
@@ArtisOpus Hey Byron, thx for info on this and no no pic to show but i think you're right it might have been the jump between dark to light.
Where do you get those little tins you make washes in?
Just from Amazon, I use a dippy palette when working off camera though, lets me make 3 next to each other/fix things way faster
As you mentioned, Archaon would be good!
I do love the big man! :D
@@ArtisOpus Picked one up from Element earlier in the year but haven't got around to painting it yet. Would love to see your approach!
You've probably been asked this question a lot, but what does lahmia medium do to washes? You seem to use it a lot. Great video as always, thanks dude!
Hey dude, it just dilutes them, but keeps consistency, and doesn't give tidal marks/tea stains like dilution with water can do :)
@@ArtisOpus Interesting. I followed one of your tutorials blindly when speed painting a load of grey knights the other week, good to know why I was using some of the ingredients. Thanks!
When I drybrush i can't help but feel extremely wasteful. We're just genuinely painting a throwaway paper towel - oh oh I meant to ask, is it somehow feasible to use a wet palette for drybrushing? So I can reload my brush with the same stuff?
😅 out with the old, in with the new, haven't touched a nasty paper towel in a decade!
Plees paint a word bearer and world eater, especially world eater next year when them get their own codex 🥰
Oh they are? I do like a bit of grim red!
@@ArtisOpus I hopes so! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD DOGG!
Is that the airbrush compressor randomly deciding to weigh in on the conversation every now and then in the background?
Absolutely, my under-desk nurgling :)
I still don't understand how you don't get that "dusty" appearance from drybrushing. No matter how little paint I have in my brushes it always has that look.
circles with a large soft brush (make up brushes are what I use)
Why didn't you just airbrush that base coat on?
I did. I showed how to do it without for people who don't own one :)
Any plans to return to kids with new release?
Absolutely yes, it's an obvious hole in our content, remedy-incoming!
Make up brush?
They're actually our brushes, which I designed myself: store.artis-opus.com/en-de/collections/series-d-drybrushing
... and then disaster struck! 😭😭😭😭😭
I think u a liar tho, I don’t think it 98.3% dry brush… more like 97.9%!! 😜🐶
You got me :|
@@ArtisOpus I good at maths 😉🐶
Maybe time to be done with GW and their moronic bottles?
Time to be done with GW? I think not, my lovely minis! ^^
I dont understand why people buy two paint its nothing special apart from the tech paints and the pots are just expensive and dumb. Oh dear
