- čas přidán 26. 06. 2024
- In today's video we're painting some of the #new40k Tyranid models in a method I happened upon while mixing techniques, we're starting with contrast, then repeating shades for depth, allowing a relatively easy and quick, flexible result, that looks great!
Not only that, we're giving you the tools to apply this technique and method to ANY COLOUR!
As ever, if you have any questions or suggestions, just ask in the comments, the best suggestion will receive a brush set of your choice!

The guy who put the steam message sound in the transitions should be given cold coffee every morning
He's very proud, I wonder if he's getting more love or hate in the comments though, the rascal!
Oh my gods you're absolutely correct lol. Tbf I've missed that though.
@@ArtisOpus well, I’M proud of the poor lad (the blue and the green carapace looks incredible, by the way, I think you might have just changed the fate of my Leviathan box…)
Is that a… compliment…?
Can you slap chop every model? Or are others better than others?? Keep it up mate.
We need to have a serious discussion about you using the steam chat sound effect for each step. I spent like 5 minutes looking for where the notifications were coming from 😅
*cackles* 😅
Got me too- you deserve the brushes from surviving the trauma alone
fr
I had a tyranid army when I was 19/20 is so great to see them back….30 years latter I am getting to play with nephew and I couldn’t be happier seeing the next generation showing the same excitement
I had
Oh man, the paints have just got so much better! And there's more ways to do things, probably too much, TBH, but we're here to help. Welcome back to you, and welcome to him!
That Steam notification sound at 11:47 really got me looking at my pc in a confused way :D
*evil smirk*
The short break-downs on the steps are very easy to follow. A good structure always helps!
@@ArtisOpus Both of you are doing a great job!
Thanks, Byron, really finding these tutorials helpful, relatively new miniature painter and I struggle to get depth and contrast, so these videos are brilliant. fellow hay fever sufferer so i feel your pain lol
A flower for your troubles 🥀. Our pleasure, my dude!
If you're along for the journey we're basically planning on teaching people everything about normal painting, while still using contrast, until one day it turns out you're all Acryllic-Badasses, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret...
*note, this is different from 'total-badass' from April Fool's video, we'll leave that type of teaching for other channels 🙄*
Thanks for this! I've just primed 90% of my Nids and I've just been staring at them in fear. I've been out of the hobby for 30 years, so it's quite a daunting prospect! Thank the Emperor for contrast paints! 😂
that's how my army is right now. 100 naked gants, and several big grey monsters.
Contrast paint is great, try pimping them with Highlights and Drybrush for better results.
Thank God I'm not the only one. There's about 20 mini's on my bedroom shelf, nicely primed, staring at me with judgement in their eyes. I'm honestly afraid to start painting them because they're so beautiful I really don't wanna mess the paint job.
My swarm of Nids is roughly 10% built and primed, the other 90% I'm seriously considering Priming wraithbone instead of abbadon black. That Jormangunder yellow is incredible. Looks faster smoother than my current.
Daunting indeed
The new models take Contrast so well. Overall a joy to work with.
I'm glad you made the comment about orientation in the beginning. Just starting with contrast and I was starting to realize that this does matter. Great tip.
I've been struggling to find a scheme I like for Tyranids since I first got into the hobby, so I love getting some inspiration to try again
We have a video coming out soon(ish) on coming up with a scheme... on a 'nid.
Should fit the bill nicely :)
again an awesome video! love how you explain the diffrent techniques, trying to teach people just not to copy but to improve their own techniques.
I have to say thank you so much for doing something other than space marines. There are a million channels doing space marines all the time. I always look forward to your videos.
Our pleasure buddy, check our instagram, we're converting something disgusting, you'll approve :)
@ArtisOpus of course. Are yall going to be at GenCon this year?
These videos are so helpful to everyone, especially those of us that can never sit and paint models as much as we would like to. I honestly feel like my pile of unpainted models is so overwhelming, I am not likely to take the extra time to experiment and try new things. Sometimes seeing is believing, and seeing people like you try new things, is a reminder to give things a try too...or at the very least, we can see the results and give them a go, knowing what the end result will look like. Thanks!
I’m working on some Tyranids with a metallic-based carapace and this came out brilliantly!!! Thank you so much!!!
I wanted to say that you do the best detailed tutorials I have seen on CZcams! You treat the audience in a respectful manner and aim your content to all levels of painter. Thanks for the great content! Oh, and I recently purchased some items from your store, great experience and prices there as well.
3 hops!!! This was the first useful colour wheel related thing I have learned in my life.
I'm looking up all my school art teachers on social media NOW to send them this video. And I'll make sure they start teaching it right away. I'll be expecting an essay on how they're going to integrate this into their curriculum.
That particular section of the video got discussed and reshot three times, I'm so glad we managed to make it digestible, thanks man!
It's not quite as easy as that. While "hopping" from yellow to blue would work, hopping the opposite way would not. You usually want to be moving towards the cooler colours for shadows.
@@Springheel01 I'm excited to try it in any case. Of course you are right that there is no point in hopping "up on the wheel", when yellow is 12 o'clock.
As a Nid's player and after being out of the painting game for a while this has been a huge help in ideas for my batch painting and speeding up the process. I have been struggling to work with contrasts effectively but even the tiny advice with strokes will help me with making steps forward. Great video guys, I look forward to more coming soon and learning more :D
Thank you very much for all your work on the channel Byron. This is probably the most didactic YT channel for dry brush and contrast enthousiast painters. Discovered you recently and already became the go to reference. Cheers
Ive only recently (6 months) started painting minis. My first model was a tyranid and they still hold a special place for me. So i really love this video
Thank you for these tutorials! After collecting most of my army pre-pandemic, I've finally started actually painting my Ironjawz. Your guides have helped a ton - the emphasis on multiple thinner coats in particular has already helped a ton. My entire paint scheme is entirely based off a dumb pun (I'm painting my boyz purple, giving the bosses crooked moustaches, and going out on a WAH), so while they're far from perfect I'm really happy with how my first models ever have been coming out, and you've been a significant reason why!
Me after 1 layer of contrast paint: "yeah.. model looks great"..
Byron: "okay.. so lets do tone it down and add another.. and another.. and another"..
They look great!! Yellow is my favorite by far tho :)
:D if you're batching you'd be surprised by how little time this stuff adds! Thanks man, I think original banana was mine, too.
I really think this is one of the best mini painting channels on CZcams right now. You do a great job of explaining simple and advanced concepts in a digestible way. I'm new to mini painting and you have definitely upped my painting game! You could make some videos on some aspects of painting many channels skip over like brush control, how to hold the brush, how much paint you should have on your brush, etc. One thing I hate which I don't see many CZcams videos talk about is bits of dust or hairs getting on my models, I'd love to see a video talking about avoiding that.
This comment deserves the likes it has, it fits with some stuff we've got in the works (I am carefully planning), we want to cover brush *sizes* especially, as I think that's where the conversation starts, personally.
THE Rich Gray, one of our signature artists, and a slayer sword winner spoke about hairs on the painting phase recently btw, the entire episode was great.
I came back to watch this a couple more times, I've got a batch of Bugs from the old Starship Troopers miniature game sitting in a box. I'll try this out on them asap. Thanks!!!
You really upped your game with the last couple videos. I think you're on a good track here. I enjoy and appreciate the way you present information in this one. I will keep the shading technique in mind, when trying my paint scheme for my army, standing on my table right now.
Well done, giving Marco a shout out as well. He deserves it. Even though, his videos definitely require a lot more knowledge of painting and color theory to be of real value to most people. I can still rewatch videos from two years ago and learn so much, I missed back then. Of course it's still stunning what he is able to do, no matter how good you are.
Absolutely, I think he is possible THE best speed-painter I've seen, his stormcast dragon video is the pinnacle of quality and speed on YT, IMO. And all his colour theory just helps him pull off crazier stuff.
What a guy :)
@@ArtisOpus 100 % agreed
Hey buddy, most liked comment! Hit us up on Instagram with what 5 brush Set you want, plus texture palette, and address.
Always enjoy these step by step processes that aren’t specific to any color!
:) trying to be as helpful as we can, thanks man!
excellent guide! Always amazed at how contrast helps the colors pop!
If you really want pop you can just do one or two thin layers and stop, you end up mega-pastel and bright :)
What I find amazing is how much these tutorials motivate and inspire me to paint, and paint more!. And I'm a fairly old geezer, turning 50 this August.. :D
Art and creativity don't have an expiry date, maybe they even improve with age? :)
Please keep making these tutorials they are great . And anyone considering their brushes get them they are great
You Sir, are great! We'll keep making if you keep watching
Everynow and then a video comes along that changes your life for the better, over the years there has been several of these, but more so recently. Zenithal, Slapchop and now this... Genuinely a game changer for me. Keep up the good work, I've only just found this channel but I'm sticking around!
Thanks so much, buddy, we'll keep making if you keep watching!
The results are amazing! And your teaching style is so good, I feel like I can follow along and easily share it with people!
You're wonderful too. Lately your vids have given me a depth to contrast I didn't know existed. Thanks for that
My pleasure, buddy!
I just picked up 2 tyranid halves of leviathan and am eagerly awating their arrival, this is a very welcome video
Amazing result!!!
This is fantastic thank you building Tyranids from Leviathan this weekend
Thanks Byron! I’m using many of these techniques. Keep ‘em coming!
Our pleasure, buddy! 🥰
This is could not have come at a better time. I am doing a 1/6 Bossk and this is perfect for doing his scales. Thank you!
Yeah boi! 👍👍
I am so excited for this video!
Hope we didn't disappoint, sir :)
@@ArtisOpus Never, it was as epic as always. Your work has really helped me on my paint journey ... I am still rubbish, but a better rubbish than when I started 155 days ago.
Lovely demonstration that looks so effective.
Thanks man!
Lovely work as always!
Terrific work. I love the look
Love your channel!!!! Great content. Thank you for keeping me excited about the hobby
That blue is soooo nice. Thanks for the easy to follow guide!
The algorythm gfods have blessed me with this videoand with your channel. I've only ever used contrast once (Alpha Legion, Akhelian Green over Silver) but I have a tyranid Kill team on the Painting desk next and I need background noise to keep me awake during night shift so Here we are.
YESS! Welcome, we've plenty more coming :)
Between the painting, the explanation, and the production quality, you've become my favorite new (to me) channel! Going to use this for my xenomorph themed nids!
Kind words, thanks so much! We've got a great follow-up coming next week, hope you find it as useful :D
@@ArtisOpus I look forward to it!
Wonderful, love the green one the best.
wholesome painting allround🤌
I was literally just starting to paint Tyranids for the first time... Thank you.
Our pleasure!
Thank you for all these painting tips and tricks. It will help me to raise quality of my models.
Great tutorial 👍
My pleasure 😊 happy painting!
Thank you! Excellent tips 😊😊
Thanks Byron, not only have you shown me a better way to do my Corinthian pottery scheme for my nids, but also given me a way to use my caroburg crimson, I salute you
:D it's a lovely colour, if you want to go stronnng you have sigvald burgundy, but *approach with caution*
@@ArtisOpus luckily I have plenty of old termagaunts to try it out on lol
I don't even paint but that thumbnail for the video had me looking forward to this moment I saw it! Can't wait to get stuck in to see the process!
I love this concept ....... VEEERY NIIIIICE.
Thanks for this! I only just now, after having been addicted to the lore for years, grabbed myself a box of models, and watched a lot of painting videos. This, here, looks like something I'll be able to accomplish (without wanting to go swimming in a Tyranid acid pool after 42 Gaunts) and have it look really nice.
This is a great start! You might surprise yourself :)
Thank you as an ork player the green scheme at the end is great can't wait to try it out
It so is, go burgundy for the X Factor, slightly yellow for highlights if you're doing them, and you'd be laughing :)
Thank you for the great tutorial!!!! I will certainly use this technique, especially the tip about the highlight colour
I like those little metal wells you're using for mixing up your contrast mixes. And that quick tip for the pastel colors is spot on. Great vid sir!
Came in late so saving for later.
Thanks Byron for all you do!
Our pleasure, my man :)
I love this level of experimentation. This is going to save me so much time I that I might even think about playing this game instead of obsessively painting hundreds of pieces various shades of brown.
Best compliment ever, we'll be following up with some more info on highlights, and people have asked about darker schemes, too :)
Let the galaxy Byron! Your tutorials have really helped me improve my painting. Thank you.
so many good ideas after watching this!
Our job here is done!
Who needs a dry palette?...... I just realized i have ten perfect ones at the end of my digits! Thank you sir 🧐
Don't forget to prime them first for that legit test!
Thanks for the Tyranid painting tutorials. It will make them look so much better on the table. So the Space marines can kill them all, and leave a pretty picture behind!
Jackson Pollock in contrast? :D
Super helpful!!!👍
This is great. My son just got into Warhammer and wants to do some Nids. I am looking forward to watching him grow in the hobby.
I really love this technique Byron. My 11 year old Son has just started 40K and has chosen The Nids for his Army. This is really easy for him to follow to start his painting journey. Thanks mate. 👍🏻
Oh dude, that's wonderful, let us know how it goes! Good luck to him from us!
(separate comment, replies get lost easily).
i am absolutely flabbergasted that the contrast pulls out the details in the carapace to be similar to the original way of doing the feathering or striations on the carapace and looks good.
Right? Wonder-paints, patience, but also changes in mini design :)
Currently got a horde of grey Tyranids scattered all over my desk and will definitely be using this video as a guide. Thanks
You could absolutely smash your way through a batch using this method, let us know how it goes!
Love this green!!!
Dude I love all your work to bits, you've helped people paint amazing things and now you've gone even better by making me pace myself multiple times in the video. 😂
:D
Love the video new watching dont know why never seen the channel before but glad it came up on my recommend list
I’m back! I’ve been away, your content is top notch and breaking down the steps make it easy to follow. Cheers.
WB buddy, thanks so much!
I'm borderline addicted to your videos. I just need to get time to sit down and go along with them in practice. As well as get some worth while brushes lol. Keep up the amazing work.
@@ArtisOpus I'll definitely keep watching. Thanks for answering the question I didn't ask because I already looked at your store and didn't know where to start lol.
Always great
🥰
MARCO NJM IS INCREDIBLEEEEE
We love Marco!
Thanks for this!
I'll be honest, this is the first video that made me really itch to get some contrast paints! I am by no means an acryllic badass, just have been hesitant to try out this "new" stuff (even though it's been out for years 😄 )
The new way the information is presented, broken down, and explained is a great improvement for helping us learn.
Don't have tyranids, but your video makes me think it'd be fun to pick some up just to try the tutorial!
I'd definitely consider it, they're some of the least 'busy' GW models, it's a lot of texture, but generally only of 3 types, which I think is hugely underappreciated in general.
Thanks buddy, plenty more coming :)
Thanks! Very helpful.
🙏
amazing stuff! Great advise
Killer technique, love it!
Thanks, buddy!
I'm totally gonna campaign for Byron to start doing tuition. I'd defo pay for a class.
We're making some plans in this direction, we might see if 100 people want to paint a Great Unclean one in one sitting 😅😅
Another inspiring video man, thank you! Weekly videos would be awesome, but I know you're a busy guy. Keep up the good work!
We've got several in edit, fingers crossed mine and Ian's time is a little more available, there's some good stuff due :)
Ive learned so much about dry rushing for you guys. Its help me jmproved in the hobby alot a i appreciate you guy
We appreciate you, buddy! Plenty more to come :)
Good stuff, thanks for the video.
Our pleasure :)
Cooling down before a second coat is a good idea! Also worth noting that lots of hairdryers have a cool air setting so you could fan the model with that after the hot air.
Absolutely! We're impatient over here though, so I use one then the other, twice the stress, same time...
Wait a minute 😅
I needed this video. My slap chop minis looked too dark. This changes the game. Thank you very much!
steam chat sounds in transitions got me good multiple times :D great video sir
*cackles* you're welcome!
I am super glad you mentioned space marines as one of your up and coming regarding this technique because that's where my mind went immediately when trying to apply this to my own models. "How would this work on a not super textured/flat panel model"
Real good video! Really helped make the colour wheel stuff click in terms of how to apply it.
Definitely going to apply a lot of this to my nids!
Get well soon , your tutorials are amazing 👍🏻
Thanks buddy, me and my eye-mist are fighting on 😅
Yay I love the premieres, like a little watch party 🥳
Same :). Don't worry, we've got some chunkier ones coming, extended-party! They just take so much more editing.
How to scheme (see purplenids in this video)
(Finally) Chaos lord, how to hack 'Eavy Metal' - metallic edition
Should be out within the month, Chaos Lord on Doom-Horsie may push at 50mins
@@ArtisOpus fantastic! Love a good horsie 🦄
Thanks great video ahead of painting my new minis
We're here to serve!
This is awesome! Will definitely have to try this on my Idoneth deepkin armour (doing it as a coral theme so hoping its similar to carapace)! Thanks team
That first yellow/orange looks great, got to try this for my orcs armours.
It's perfect man, highlight bone and you're *almost* in classic territory colour-wise.
Looks amazing! Best miniature painting channel on CZcams.
Some fabulous work there Byron, Your thumbnail was looking spectacular after that drybrush and wash. 'Nids were great too.
Thanks, it's all about starting from prime and working your way up, foundation is key 💪💪💪
Made it 35 seconds into the video, and immediately noticed the Japanese words "Mononoke Hime" in the background. That's my most favorite movie of all time, you've earned a sub from me just for that lol. Now I'll finish watching the video
🥰 seminal film, went in when I was younger and never left! Welcome 😊
Tone of voice and background sounds make this a peak meditation video, but the painting tips were neat as well.
😅😅 Editor Ian picked the right soundtrack for this one, then! Cheers, buddy :)
Perfect timing! I'm about two weeks away from painting my brand new Tyranid horde! :D
Lovely! We've got a follow up due very soon, too!
Awesome! you're making me cry too 😂 all the work i have to do to be as talented as you. Thanks for the lesson
Don't worry, we did the work for you, now you just spin your colour-wheel, and conjure up magic 🎨🖌!
