13:00 You're correct. When Necromantic Selection resolves, destroy all creatures, then you pick a creature card in the graveyard to bring back under your control.
The option to move your commander to the command zone is a state-based action. SBA's are not checked during the resolution of a spell or ability. SBA's are checked after a spell or ability is done resolving, before players would get priority again.
Because we don't check SBA's during the resolution of Necromantic Selection, players can't move their commanders to the command zone until after you choose which creature card to bring back.
    Sauce: I'm a Level 2 judge.
Relevant entries in the Comprehensive Rules:
704.3. Whenever a player would get priority (see rule 117, "Timing and Priority"), the game checks for any of the listed conditions for state-based actions, then performs all applicable state-based actions simultaneously as a single event.
117.2e. Resolving spells and abilities may instruct players to make choices or take actions, or may allow players to activate mana abilities. Even if a player is doing so, no player has priority while a spell or ability is resolving. See rule 608, "Resolving Spells and Abilities."
903.9a. If a commander is in a graveyard or in exile and that object was put into that zone since the last time state-based actions were checked, its owner may put it into the command zone. This is a state-based action. See rule 704.

From my reading, Necromantic Selection does indeed work the way you want. The Commander can only go back to the command zone as a state based action. SBAs can't be taken when a card is still resolving its effect, so it has to wait until Selection resolves to move.
Edit: For Tergrid stans, this changes nothing. Her effect is a triggered ability, which means it happens either after or before(in the case of a cost being paid) the card or effect resolves but not during. So SBAs are checked in that time, meaning commanders can dodge the effect.

@@julioroman3473 That's because Tergrid adds a triggered ability after whatever made you sacrifice your commander resolves. Before Tergrid resolves but after the creature dies you check SBA's.

@@julioroman3473 Tergrid's effect is a triggered ability. So SBAs are checked before her effect resolves, which means commanders can dodge her ability. It's in the Gatherer site. If it was a replacement effect then they might not be able to.

      @@NitpickingNerds Hell yes!
      - I find searching my cards, getting distracted by other cards and the scope-creep and time-wasting, result in most of my deck ideas not being finished. I'm going to wind up "drafting" other decks on the way, or a friend comes over, or i just lose interest or run out of time...
      - Makes it hard to upgrade existing decks and it's super annoying to KNOW you have a card you need/want and it's basically lost in your own room :D
      - Plus making half-built decks (with no follow-thru) and random draft piles for same, just adds to the entropy of finding anything on purpose ever.
life hacks about this sort of stuff i imagine would help a lot of people who own "too many" cards, or just want to make it easier to GSD the deck brewing.

Love Budget Bomb episodes! I would love to see an episode where you guys break down how to make a powerful deck on a budget. I made a budget Vega, the Watcher deck the other week and my friends were suspicious that it was less than $50. And I was stressing to them how a disciplined building of removal and card draw and dedicated win conditions could make even a cheap deck really good. Would love to hear your thoughts on what mindset and parameters are vital to you when building budget.

The answer to Necromantic Selection: YES you can take commanders.
When a commander dies, it hits the graveyard then state based actions (SBA) will let the owner move it to command zone. In this case, SBA are NOT checked while a spell is still resolving so you can take commanders!

Wanted to share my experience with kenriths transformation. The thing I see happen most often, is someone gets a commander with it, then the person just untaps and makes a deal to swing it into someone who will block it. Which just results in them recasting their commander the following turn. I know that's gonna vary a lot based on situation, and playgroup, but I thought it was worth mentioning, because it is a serious downside.

I run Necromantic Selection in my Rakdos Chaos deck which is very wipe-heavy, this is a nice top end for my wipes. It's a funny card sometimes, it gives a heap of value for it's $, and okay value for mana in a deck that needs wipes.
Agitator Ant is arguably BETTER in a non-combat meta, people are either ignoring it (and you get a growth effect stapled to a creature for reasonable value) or are getting goaded and keep swinging at one another. I run it in the Rakdos Chaos deck of course.

I guess one comment wasn't enough. Outpost siege is prevalent in my meta (I even run it my mono red for the ETB/LTB), but it would take it 5 turns to do *nearly* the same; there's a lot to be said about having the cards immediately, esp in the colors that most often see top deck mode.

I'd add Custodi Soulcaller as well. Card is bonkers in terms of its textbox, statline while attacking and its price of about a quarter. I slept on the card for a long time until recently, then bought several for my decks once I re-learned it existed. Isshin also doubles both its melee trigger AND its recursion triggers for those looking for additions for that deck. Still can't believe the card has everything it does for a 1WW uncommon.

I really want your guy’s opinion on Infiltration Lens! It’s just over $1 but I think it’s super underrated! 1 MV equipment that has equip 1 and “Whenever equipped creature becomes blocked by a creature, draw 2 cards”

In response to the aggro is problematic in commander sentiment... the one commander that I have that actually enables the archetype is Breena. Pair her with a bunch of 1 mana creatures and ways to protect your boardstate and just beat face, and never run out of cards. It's just so much power, so quickly.

  • @dionseannavarrette3400

I don’t know if you guys had it in the books but you should do best card from each commander. I know you love the inkshield. But is it the best?? I love callbacks to recent commanders!!

Song of the dryad's sticks through everything. Most games I play, if I put it on a commander, their game gets shut down entirely. Definitely stronger in that regard. Kenriths is easier than resolve. Just block something big. But the fact that it replaces itself with a draw gives it to kenritg

Mentioned Leyline of the void and rest in piece and left out samurai of the pale curtain and my favorite of the effects, planar void, which is a budget Leyline of the void, except it affects yourself as well unlike Leyline, but it's 1 black mana. And it's like 1-2 bucks. Lol..

Goad is such a fun mechanic. I love cards like Agitator Ant for encouraging interaction and active board states. As fun as counter magic can be, I'd rather see a brawl on the table rather than a counterspell control war, but that's just me.
I strongly believe that Wizards needs to errata goad so it can bypass stacksy/pillowfort effects like Propaganda or Ghostly Prison.
I have found myself sitting at a table where the goaded player/creatures are forced to attack me because their controller tapped out and my other opponents are holding up those enchantments or similar static abilities.
Complete backfire in a goading/aggro strategy that already has a tough time keeping up with most metas.
This could "break" goad but I can't think of how off the top of my head. Even the colors that goad seems to be prevalent in, e.g. Rakdos, and the like, have trouble removing enchantments as is.

Along the same lines as Changeling Outcast, I'd recommend Universal Automaton. It's a 1 mana 1/1 with changeling like the outcast, but it's also an artifact for the decks that care about that, it can go in any deck because it's colorless, and you can even fetch it with Urza's Saga (if you really have nothing better to do with Urza's Saga.) My Atla Palani deck loves it because it's a 1 mana egg!
