  • We have been using Right Start Math in our homeschool for two years now, and have done Level's A, B, C, D, and just starting Level E. In this video we
    are going to review each Level for RightStart as well as a short segment on a one on one lesson with one of my beautiful children (baby cameo in most).
    We love this Right Start Math curriculum and how confident my children are in Math. They usually ask if we can do Math first because we have so much fun doing
    the games! It sounds corny, but it is true.
    Homeschool Math should not be something you dread, and it should be laid out easily for you and your kids to follow along. And more importantly, you
    should ENJOY IT.
    Forget the drill and kill. Try this out instead.

    Hey guys! I'm Summer Meyers, homeschool mom to five kiddos, and we talk all things homeschool on this channel. Homeschool community is important to me--talking about homeschool and encouragement to be our best selves for our children is powerful. I love talking home education and really diving into what makes homeschool work. We are an ecletic homeschool, mixing Charlotte Mason, Wildschooling/adventure schooling, and Unit studies. I have kinesthetic learners as well as visual learners who thrive on being outdoors and soaking up God's green earth. I love hearing from other families who are choosing to school at home, so please introduce yourself in the comments! Being at home is hard, and taking on the education of our kids is even harder. Know that you are not alone in this journey and that you can do it!

    I absolutely love your personality and humor. :). Thank you for another very thorough Rightstart video. Been binging on RS videos trying to learn more (we are on a spring break). I just purchased B and D this weekend off of Rainbowresource and also pieced together the big math set and saved almost $100. I wanted to try RS last year but wasn’t ready yet. Everyone says its very teacher intensive and hard with multiples but I talked through the samples for most levels and its really not any more than what we’ve been doing already. Definitely will be able to keep doing our LOF books. I’ll be creeping around on your other videos soon. :)

      I'm from all over! Haha! I was born in New Jersey, raised in Japan, but my home base was North Carolina and that's typically where I say I'm from.
      Right Start Level A is perfect for rising kindergarteners--but don't be afraid to skip ahead if you feel like it's too easy! Lots of people I know start their 5/6 year olds with Level B, but I love Level A because I think my kids had so much fun with the math and got good number sense.
      Sorry that was a lot longer than I was planning on. 😅💕💕

    I really appreciate the time you took in both videos to show us the manipulatives and explain the curriculum. Can you give me any advice on how to juggle so many subjects with so many kids. I have three kids and it seems like if I teach each one a math lesson then I’m too tired to teach them each a reading comp lesson and then any other science/ss lesson after that.

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Před 2 lety +1

      I hear that! Juggling a bunch of kids and curriculums can be absolutely exhausting. The thing that has helped me the most is sticking with my current curriculum for multiple years. When you know your curriculum well, it becomes easier to teach and faster. This meant that sometimes, the curriculum we were using with our kids might work really well with one, and a bit of a squeaky fit for another. It's a long term benefit, but not always ideal.
      I'm experimenting with science and history programs currently that have taken a lot of pressure off of me--Story of the world Audiobook has been a life saver as far as history, and we've been using Mystery Science (there's a free version if you want to try it out) that requires minimal effort on my part. Not thrilled that it's on the computer, but it has been perfect for our elementary years.
      I also have a video on how to school multiples. I'll link that for you. ❤️❤️

    Question: could magnetiles be used in place of the tangram panels? Thank you for the review and your time!

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Před 6 měsíci

      We love Magna tiles at my house so I can understand the appeal! Some of the lessons are specifically designed for the geopanels. Especially the lessons talking about place value because the little blue gram blocks fit exactly 10 along the edge of the square panel. For that reason, I don't think so.
      The geopanel lessons are really cool, but they aren't used a ton. My kids love to put them together and there's a lot of great spacial reasoning going on so I wouldn't skip.❤️❤️

    Thank you for such a thorough video! I have a 9yo who is in "third grade" this year. It's our first year homeschooling, and I'm looking into the possibility of a different math curriculum for next year. If he's never done Right Start, is it something that would be hard to start at this point (like 4th grade-ish)? Is this a program that really is best used from the beginning?

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Před 4 měsíci

      Not at all! My first year of RightStart, my daughter was in 4th grade and she's in Algebra now after using RightStart all the way through! It kind of depends on how comfortable you think your 9 year old is with their multiplication. Our first year we used Masterbooks, and they did not have any foundation for multiplication. Which meant we needed to start with Level D for her. If you think your 9 y/o is solid with their understanding (not memorized, just understand and are flexible with multiplication) then you can go ahead and start with Level E. If all they have done this year is memorize multiplication facts, then I would start with Level D to make sure they know how to play with the numbers, and can easily skip count. What program did you use this year?

  • @bethanyhall1524

    This was SO helpful! I was going to go a different direction because I had heard this math is overwhelming. But as I'm watching you do it with your child I think this would be perfect for my son. Are there any tips you might have on how to not let it feel overwhelming? Like some ideas on the things others says they don't like about it. I think if I'm ahead on the harder parts for mom I might be ready and prepared for that. I just really think my son will enjoy this so much more than what we've been using.

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I'm so glad it was helpful! What level are you guys looking at?
      Tips, set a timer don't go past that mark. I've done this off and on, and I've realized that the years we have done just 20 to 30 minutes (depending on age) they absorb and retain so much better. Sometimes we end up doing 2 or 3 lessons and sometimes just half of one when we time it.
      I think what might be overwhelming would be the amount of cards and manipulatives. I have it organized in a three set plastic drawer and I try to put stuff away as soon as we are done with it. Haven't lost any pieces yet! *fingers crossed knock on wood*
      Otherwise I think the program is pretty straightforward. Everything is scripted and I don't have to prepare anything except maybe game play.

    Can I start with level B if my daughter has never worked with an abacus before? My daughter is familiar with adding, subtracting, but doesn’t have math facts memorized. She knows even and odd. Has been introduced to money but hasn’t mastered it. Not sure if I should start with a or b for first grade?

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes! At the beginning of each level they have review lessons and a good thorough introduction to the abacus and how it works. These you can skip when you move on to level C, but they put them intentionally in there for people coming into RS in the middle. And honestly, it's not that complicated. She'll catch on quick! 🤗💕💕

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Před 2 lety

      Hey! Welcome! I don't like assigning grade level too much because I've talked and worked with kids of all ages in those levels-- it really depends on where they are currently at and the assessment can really help determine where your kids should start. That being said, Kindergarten is typically started around levels A/B, so C would be around 1st/2nd grade. D is where multiplication is hit hard so 3rd/4th would be age appropriate. E would be around 5th/6th grade.
      Was that helpful or confusing? Haha! 😅 My best recommendation would be to take the assessment.

    I assume that you find it doable to use this with multiple ages seeing as you are making it work! I have been told by a few that 20 minutes per lesson is a reasonable expectation. Would you agree with that? We will have 4 levels of math here and I'm trying to piece together in my mind how our routine could look if we jump into RS. Any specific large family tips? 😬😅

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Před 2 lety +1

      Definitely do-able! And worth it for us! 20 minutes is fair--in the higher levels there is less time with me and more independent work. I tend to start my oldest kid, then the next. Bounce between 2, then I can add a third if the lesson is going faster or the warm up is something they do by themselves. Level A needs my full attention, but rarely takes very long. What levels are you doing? I would highly recommend the right Start buy and sell Facebook group. Those ladies know their stuff and it's very active.
