About Me:
Hey guys! I'm Summer Meyers, homeschool mom to five kiddos, and we talk all things homeschool on this channel. Homeschool community is important to me--talking about homeschool and encouragement to be our best selves for our children is powerful. I love talking home education and really diving into what makes homeschool work. We are an eclectic homeschool, mixing Charlotte Mason, Wildschooling/adventure schooling, and Unit studies. I have kinesthetic learners as well as visual learners who thrive on being outdoors and soaking up God's green earth. I love hearing from other families who are choosing to school at home, so please introduce yourself in the comments! Being at home is hard, and taking on the education of our kids is even harder. Know that you are not alone in this journey and that you can do it!

    This is ONLY in her very first book. She specifically writes about long uninterrupted work cycles in her later books. “Our schools start with three to four hours of work and remain open longer and longer. Children begin to come in the afternoon. Then, both the teacher and the children begin to get enthusiastic and remain a few hours longer in school.” Maria Montessori - The 1946 London Lectures - 192 The interruption of work by the hours fixed by a time-table and the periods of rest is a negative. [Teachers say:] ‘Don't work too hard at one thing or you will be tired’, whereas the child shows clearly the desire for the maximum effort. Maria Montessori - The Absorbent Mind - 360

      “As I have said, our observation of children has made us realize that work is man's fundamental instinct and that the child can work from morning till night without ever feeling tired, as if his labor were part of the order of nature. Fatigue is not natural. It is not the result of work, but of working the wrong way. The child does his work without getting tired and proves to us that we have immense untapped energies.” Maria Montessori - Education and Peace - 114

    Excellent video, thank you! We love RightStart but I have been going nuts trying to decide if it’s a good start for my TKer (he’s very math inclined but loves all the cute colorful stuff! Which..as we know, RightStart lacks). In the end though, it’s the math that matters and in my opinion, RightStart is phenomenal. If I find that he needs something a bit more “fun”, what do you think about MWC? Also, I feel like you would love the math from The Beauty of Play✨

    Thank you for such a thorough video! I have a 9yo who is in "third grade" this year. It's our first year homeschooling, and I'm looking into the possibility of a different math curriculum for next year. If he's never done Right Start, is it something that would be hard to start at this point (like 4th grade-ish)? Is this a program that really is best used from the beginning?

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers Před 4 měsíci

      Not at all! My first year of RightStart, my daughter was in 4th grade and she's in Algebra now after using RightStart all the way through! It kind of depends on how comfortable you think your 9 year old is with their multiplication. Our first year we used Masterbooks, and they did not have any foundation for multiplication. Which meant we needed to start with Level D for her. If you think your 9 y/o is solid with their understanding (not memorized, just understand and are flexible with multiplication) then you can go ahead and start with Level E. If all they have done this year is memorize multiplication facts, then I would start with Level D to make sure they know how to play with the numbers, and can easily skip count. What program did you use this year?

      I am on the hunt for one that is more affordable. Biologos is an interesting group that offers science with Christian background. It is expensive, and looks like it's more of a supplement, but does include old earth creationism with evolution and what that means for Christian faith. biologos.org/integrate I ran across it researching this video and I am intrigued, but not completely sold.

    As someone who's in 11th grade, having to find obscure chemicals... needing red cabbage for the THIRD time!!! (There were weird cleaners at Walmart, but for once they didn't have the red cabbage.) I feel all of this. We homeschoolers might not struggle in the way most students do, but we have to suffer through finding weird items for chemistry, trying experiments that don't work, and resorting to youtube videos to explain what was supposed to happen. There is a part of the HS community that doesn't use planners or schedules (Type B personality). They have a list of assignments to get done every week. Pros: flexibility for Mom with little ones, field trips or outings, and older children are given responsibility. Maybe this can lead to too much freedom or laxness. But it works with checks and balances.

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers Před 5 měsíci

      I love that you mention this. I'm definitely more a Type A planning it all out, but I know plenty of homeschoolers who do exactly how you described it. I think this works particularly well for kids in letting them have more ownership of their school work. Are you more type B?

Thankfully, I'm in the early years (firstborn is 4 yo), and I've caught myself just in time to take it slow and steady. My priest's wife is my personal contact to the TB HSers. I think it was far too easy for some parts of LA and others were impossible and it was a fail across the curriculum. so the parts they knew were wasting time and the parts they needed more work on wasn't giving enough practice. also its very teacher intensive. it was the math per child then the LA per child then the science per child if we ever got there at all.@@SummerMeyers

    Also, the drills are for after mastery. So once they have learned through the build, write, say method and already know the answers, they can use the drills for improving speed and automaticity. The drills and worksheets are NOT for teaching the facts.

  • @slshaw09
    @slshaw09 Před 6 měsíci

    They really aren't flashcards. They are fact check cards. You use them to keep track of facts they know and facts they haven't mastered yet. If you are using them like flash cards, then you aren't doing the program correctly.

      That's the selling line that Math U See uses. I can't say I see the difference between how Math U See uses them and how traditional flash cards are used which I why I pointed that out. I honestly do not have a problem with how Math U See uses them or the drills. I do think naming them something else though doesn't make it is something else. It's okay to think differently then me, and I found the program well developed for children who need additional help.
