  • The Windfoiling Series continues from Cookie & the Ride-Along Sessions. The craze is taking over the windsurfing world and this video covers how to slow the foil down and stay flying at lower speeds.
    Often skipped past by people learning to foil; the slow speed control on the foil is an essential skill to master downwind gybe foiling and gybes.
    As usual the Ride-Along session is brought through a combination of live on-board cameras and microphones, as well as some pre-recorded demos to add some clarification.

    I've been focused so much on being powered up and fast on a foil that this is extremely helpful to me. Going to try to slow it down next time (soon!)

      Thanks for watching. Going fast is great fun of course, but being able to slow it down and stay under control is an essential skill for developing your all round skill- and saving mistakes when then happen! 👍

    Thank you very much for this lesson. As a normal windsurfer I have the bad habit to put my front hand a lot of in front. I am beginner in foil and I already noticed that is not the good position. With your help I will try to place my hands much more back.

    Thanks for the fine detail here mate. All your vids are great...this is one of the most helpful for me I think. Overpowering gusts and uncontrollable speed and lift are a frustrating issue for me...too many instinctive and aggressive fin windsurfing habits, I think. I'll give all your advice a try today.

    Some handy little tips, I seem to be quite front foot heavy, will try just bringing my front hand back, may just be the little thing that gets constant flight.

    • @Cookiesports

      Hi Wade!
      Exactly that problem is on the "to-film" list, which is getting lower and longer and the winter's snow is getting closer and closer!
      Quick tips- breaching as you speed up, maybe a kit set up tweet, have you tried playing with the mast foot position in the track? Makes a huge difference, when I'm feeling comfortable n my kit and looking for higher speed I'll often land and nudge it forward a little to pin the noes lower.
      Other thought is front foot pressure... there's two ways to push through your front foot- down through the heels (causing the board to luff up), or toe pressure, keeping the board lower and flatter.
      Final though, when powered up and on the edge of breaching as you speed up, creep you back foot a little more central, and even forward, will help keep the board down. 👍👍👍👍

    • @WadeVogt
      @WadeVogt Před 3 lety +2

      @@Cookiesports I've played around with the mast position and moving my back foot around, which does help, but the gusts still get me unless I can sheet out enough. I'll try concentrating more on pressure through my toes if I feel myself rounding up, and continuing to dial in the mast and back foot positions. I'll probably only be able to get out 1 or 2 more times this year, but I'm already looking forward to next season. Thanks!

      I've been working on my foiling this year, and I'm not having this issue anymore! Getting the right balance between heel and toe pressure was the main thing I needed to get the hang of. I've been re-watching your foiling videos since I've been working on my foiling jibes. Really helpful! Thanks for all the great content!

    Thanks for the excellent tips again Cookie. Re sailor weight and foil aspect ratio. At 85kg, should I have a 1500cm2 front wing, a longer fuselage for control maybe? I bought a 2nd hand foil, but it’s on the small side for me I think. I can get up on the foil, control up and down, but my straight line control is inconsistent. On your advice, I’m staying out the back strap… in fact I’ve removed them for now.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před rokem

      It’s much easier without a back strap isn’t it!
      I think the simple answer on foil size - is yes! Just the fact your asking that question tells me you’ve recognised the lack of lift… and even if it it’s actually required- the physiological aspect of changing kit will make it feel better! 👍👍👍

    Hmmmm.. analogues to 'search for stall' in flying. I will try this (next spring, stick to big boards for now).

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety

      It's an odd concept I know- why would we slow it down when going fast is so much fun, but it's like really learning clutch control on your car- not just how to stamp on the throttle! Really important skill!

    Hey Cookie, I 've been windfoiling for a full six months now and I am starting to feel confident with my flights. However, I am feeling a slight pain on my front knee when I am staying on this position for long time. It is because I am on both straps and it is slightly bent. Any tips on how to avoid that and any tips on using the harness also? Thanks in advance!

    So are you effectively just sheeted out, carefully applying a little more power with the front hand when you need it?

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před 3 lety

      Sheeted in less, and controlling through front hand- yes.
      Key bit is matching the power to the unusual trim- noes high, way higher than usual- like you’re trying to deliberately breach- but matching that power to stop it shooting up and away!
      Such a useful skill to master!
