    Really nice video! Loving the details. It makes perfect sense that something like sanding gives a slight edge but is difficult to measure. On the other side if you put 10 things like that together you get something measurable.

    Pro tip for wet sanding. Put a couple of drops of dish washing soap in your spray bottle. Helps to lubricate the sandpaper.

    Touching the wings and mast on the main surface and leaving the mast on the stones made me cry inside!!! But then i realise you have and unlimited supply.

      @Nico_GER7  Před 2 lety +3

      I actually made sure that the main pressure is on the seaweed on the stones and laid it down carefully. I don’t have unlimited supply, and even if - that wouldn’t mean I don’t take care of it.

    Well, I'll through another curve ball at this issue. At Defi you were in a racing environment, in warm conditions with safety boats at the ready. In this test it was cold and you were the only board on the water. Would you safely say, that you were pushing as hard as at Defi? This is no critic, just an observation on the great video you have made.

    Another grate video
    can you do one on setting the mast angle I here people are placing shims into the foil box
    Probably not nessasary for starboard foil and board combo but I run a jp135 for now with a starboard foil and would like to know
    If its working the best it can
    Thanks again and keep up the good work 👏

      I have the same combo mate. I use an iq style starboard race foil with a JP race board and I’m now using a 1.5 degree shim in the fun box to try and improve the touchdowns and also general sailing feel of the foil. I’d love to hear Nicos input on this.

      @@mintoxace5571 yes I'm using the 115+ fuse although I find the window of no flight and to much lift very small I can't get up or the apparent wind kicks in ind I'm heading hard upwind All my weight on the harnis and front foot trying to kill the lift
      Hen's the question about mast angle

    Testing usually leads to...more testing! I recognize that! So, if it wasn't the surface texture or surface tension of the mast that caused the sudden spin-outs at the Defi, what did? I find it hard to believe it was simply caused by 'pushing too hard'. Than it would happen to you (and your colleagues) much more often. Or maybe you changed your style a bit due to the unusual long races at the Defi? Maybe a heavier back foot or straighter legs or a lapse of concentration? Has it happened since?

  • @kanedewilde
    @kanedewilde Před 2 lety

    Most of it is airfoil and surface smoothness. There are differences in surface finish between individual or even across the surface of the same mast. Scratches, graphics, clear coat orange peel etc. water conditions can also change it. Colder, choppier water seems to make it worse.
    Some mast design choices can make a mast more resistant to these imperfections. In general, thicker t/c% masts will have more problems.

    Great job Nico. I have a question/suggest. I have see your compare video with freeride-freerace. If is possible execute compare video on Windfoil with difference front wing in same config (for test with a specific wind difference between big or not frontwing ?) ...I think that change of sail reflect difference on maximum speed (another interesting video for windfoil gear).

  • @jamesmckenzie4572
    @jamesmckenzie4572 Před rokem

    I sand my windsurf boards with 400 grit in the direction of the water flow in order to create a 'boundary layer'. For some time I've thought this was normal as I can feel the difference it makes. Does sanding with finer grits (your 2000) still preserve the boundary layer? On the other hand, I've polished my foil to a glossy shine using polishing compound beyond 2000 grit and I'm wondering which is better, full polish or sanding and to which grit? I'm curious to know your opinion. I once waxed my board with car polish and it was even better but only for a few runs and then the salt water seemed to have removed the wax. Enjoying your videos, thanks.

    but the shark has the leather like sand paper very rough this because the rough leather creates a layer of water , so then u ave that the water flows on other water and it should be faster, facts the fastest water animal is a type of shark that goes till 60 or more knots

    Hi Nico, very nice videos! You mention in this video using the 105 Evolution fuselage, along with the Evo 725 wing in lighter conditions and the thin stabilizer. What stabilizer do you prefer to go with the 725? It seems like the 255 thin might be too small for really light conditions...

    Moer details are fine, but your cutter is a way to much hyperactiv. These microcuts in this film and in your speaking is to much. It's making a very nervous setting.

    • @Nico_GER7
      @Nico_GER7  Před 2 lety +1

      I cut it myself and did like this because prefer watching videos like this. Cut out all the pauses, “ehm”s etc.
      But it varies, sometimes I cut more hectic like, sometimes less. Without all the cuts it would’ve come out at 15min or so.
      In the end it comes down to me not being able to think and talk English as fluently and fast like it’s my mother tongue.

    The sanding placebo myth will be alive as long as windsurf competition will happen. This can easily be proofed in towing tanks. Therefore if it would have an effect it would be common scientific knowledge. Probably the sanding does do a proper cleaning of the surface from dirt which indeed would have an effect. Sorry I have to smile. I enjoy your videos.👍👍

    To be honest this video looks and sounds to me like you got quite some pushback from Starboard for "criticizing" or blaming the foil mast for the spinouts and now you try (or were asked to) to turn in around/take that back... The testing conditions were nowhere near to those at Defi and you showed hardly any foiling in this vid and skipped the boom cam angle which was key to your discovery previously. This is the first video you made where I am not sure if you are sincere about what you are saying (I am not judging if you are right or wrong now or were then).

    • @Nico_GER7
      @Nico_GER7  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for your feedback Tomasz 👍.
      I’m still saying that I’m thinking it was the mast fault and likely the sanding fixed it. I’m just not sure how it did. And with all these factors involved we can never be 100% sure.
      Also any other new not sanded masts don’t catapult. That’s kind of the impression I left last time.
      I actually showed little foiling, because my friend forgot to record the footage to the SD card 😓. Would’ve loved to show more.
      Boom camera good point, didn’t consider using it.
      And of course I can not test in a racing situation, because I’ll be sure not to race with an unprepared surface :-).
      I try to be transparent, hence all these videos about it. 🤙
