Small correction, the 27GN950 has 16 local dimming zones, not 8. This doesn't change our thoughts on its HDR performance
Small correction. This is double the local dimming zones. It's a pretty big part of the video.
Like many, expecting to upgrade gpus in the near future (most likely 6800xt) So my question is would it be worth it for me to move from my 1440p 144hz 4ms response time asus monitor to something like this monitor? It's a shame the hdr isn't better here, now I'm not sure it's time to move to 4k for me yet.. for what this monitor is though, it does seem well priced compared to other panels
@@nickgarcia1292 Wait for a better HDR1000 panel.
This monitor forgets hardware calibration after shutdown.
@@guywithalltheanswers6942 16 local dimming zones is still rubbish
I have this monitor. Picture and response is good, but there are some problems with it that you missed:
- no way to disable deep sleep. On Win10 that means in a multi-monitor setup, when it goes to sleep, the system stops detecting it and messes up your programs/desktop. No way to fix that other than never put monitor to sleep. Desperately needs firmware update. This was not an issue on the 850 that I also own. This also makes the USB hub on it unreliable.
- When turning on, the RGB wheel burns with the power with a thousand sons before settling to the set mode. Terrible at night.
Agreed, that is a needed feature. But I would blame Windows more than the display. The display is merely following the DisplayPort standard that requires deep sleep.
Thanks for noting these!
i laughed so much with the "power of the thousand SONS". hahahha,
nice notes nontheless, thank you for your input.
@@MikkoKorkalo Yep, having a mix of HDMI and displayport for my monitors is an issue with sleep. I tend to minimize all my windows before putting my PC to sleep.
Thank you, that is a big help. Will keep me from being tempted by this display. Once thing I hate is that when my computer goes to idle and monitors go to sleep, one of my monitors is forgotten and will reconnect every time I wiggle the mouse. Those prompts to choose audio and the moving of my windows is infuriating.

Me: green numbers good, red numbers bad!
That's me watching their review
I have been waiting for this review
Seems a bit silly for LG not to include HDMI 2.1 in 2020 when some of their 2019 TV models did. My Dell S2716DG shall continue to live on!
LG's been making several bad decisions with their monitors especially the supplying of really short cables which means you best make sure your power strip and PC are pretty close to the desk. The warranty is extremely hit or miss, their output connectors, their OSD etc.
Seriously, why is this always an issue?! Monitors never include current HDMI. Same thing last revision, HDMI 2.0 had been around for ages and we kept getting HDMI 1.4 ports.
@@Malus1531 My Acer XV272U Version 2 (updated version of the original XC272) has: height, swivel, tilt adjustments, \HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 along with 170 Hz Refresh rate (DP as HDMI is still 144Hz), QHD and DCI-P3 95% and the monitor cost me about $300 at Microcenter (original price is $400). Not totally ideal but still miles better than most monitors at the price when it comes to output. It could use some USB 3.1 ports but I'm okay without it on a monitor for now.
This is a computer monitor. Display port is all you need.
@@marcin2256 Except hdmi 2.1 is better than displayport 1.4 and Nvidia didn't add displayport 2.0 to 30 series
I have this monitor and I love it the colours are beautiful and the response time is great!
I was looking forward so much to that review. Was wondering why you guys waited so long for it. 😄
Was on my shortlist if I go 4k...
Thanks for the great work.
Great to find a channel that keeps its viewers up to date on the best monitors available, especially when it comes to 4K gaming monitors. Just got an EVGA RTX 3090 XC3 ULTRA GAMING (got on queue to purchase by signing up for availability notification and 2.5 weeks later I got an e-mail allowing me to buy one), so looking to get a good 4K gaming monitor. Based on your reviews, just backordered an LG27GN950-B. Keep up the good work.
Finally! Been waiting for it!
Really enjoy all your monitor reviews, so much detail that make choosing the best one much easier. Was curious as to whether you are planning to review any of the Eve Spectrum monitors when they come out later in the year? I was thinking of picking up the 1440p 240Hz version but would love to see a review of it before I pull the trigger.
I love your videos. Your input lag chart helped me solidify my choice with my new monitor as the LG 27GL850.
I've been waiting for a this monitor review since this monitor has released good job guys.
Been waiting for this! I know each panel is different, but could you share the preset and setting you ended up with after calibrating like I sometimes see in your other monitor reviews? Great review, loving mine so far
I picked up this monitor about a month ago. It's absolutely fantastic, I'm loving it so far. All of Tim's critiques are completely valid. While as regular monitor it is excellent, if you are thinking of getting this monitor specifically for HDR features, just don't. But for me as a gaming/daily use monitor it is amazing. I have no complaints with it outside of the HDR performance. Really glad I decided to spend the extra $300 and get it over the LG 27GL850.
hi, but is possible to turn off the lights behind the monitor, while u are using it?
@@gian7644 yeah...
Just got mine yesterday, I LOVE IT!
Incredible review as always! You guys are the best! Please review the LG 38GN950 next time!
Super glad to see this review as this was the top on my list of monitors for my next large system upgrade. With the Ryzen 5000 cpus and nvidia/amd video cards, I want to spring into 4k gaming. I don't upgrade monitors often so a $800 price point is fine if it remains competitive over time, meaning "good enough" towards the end of that 8 year timeframe. The only big downside I see is with the HDR support which makes me wonder what the competition might come out with over the next 3 months.
Been using this monitor for about a month now, used to have a PG279Q. The 27GN950 is very good for me personally, the only gripe is that HDR isn't great in some games, but others it looks very good, but I didn't buy this monitor for HDR so its a nice little extra feature. Overall I couldn't be happier with this monitor, and for the people who say 27 inches is too small... you need glasses.
A big thanks for the excellent review, prompted me to purchase it's predecessor this week, the LG 27GL850-b which was available for £339 in the UK - a £100 discount brand new as part of an early black friday deal. Was using an 11 year old 21" inch generic monitor so the difference is like night and day!
Great video! Exactly what I needed, liked and subbed 👍
i am eager to see a 32" 4k 120-144hz Display hopefully we get a decent one soon.
Same here, could even stretch to 34" 144-165hz & HDMI 2.1 I would be very happpy, but also need to find a longer desk.
I doubt we will see 120hz monitors anymore.
Philips is about to release a VA 32inch 120hz hdmi 2.1 monitor. Philips even usually has a good no bright pixel warranty on its monitors.
Exactly what my thoughts were... what’s the point of a 27” 4K unless you are going to touch your nose to the screen ?

I've had one of these for about a month now, its truly incredible. ips glow is strong with this one though sometimes.
I really want this display but slightly worried about ips glow I know ill get a bit but I'm worried about getting loads
Ive also had this about a month. Ips glow is a little strong on my monitor but tbh I don't notice it a bit. You'd have to be playing dark games in complete darkness (which tends not to happen with the the RGB ring behind it) to really see it
I'm baffled, I have no ips glow. I got mine 1 month ago.
I returned my first one because the IPS glow was noticeable even at 50% brightness in a lit room on scenes that weren't completely black. The replacement is much better, still has IPS glow but it's not super noticeable.
Can't have everything. Ithink it's a great monitor especially in this price range

Could you please do such a detailed review for the LG CX OLEDs?
I am trying to decide between oled TVs or 4k monitors like this.
Linus TT does a vid on this... just get the oled if the price is the same of the monitor.
Actually the price of the TV is 1499 usd at the moment.
Nice video! Can you make a video on explaining definitions you're using for colour-accuracy? You do awesome and quite extensive colour testing, but I'm having a hard time following some these graphs. I think having a bit of understanding of colour science would help in a monitor buying decision.
FINALLY ! I was waiting you to review this monitor since its launch ! THANKS !
I know you don't want to review TVs but wish you'd make an exception for an LG oled, It would be great to have the data to compare with current monitors on the market. Anyway your hardwork is appreciated, thanks for the reviews!
Agreed, this monitor looks good until you compare it to a 48/55" OLED with true HDR, zero response times, perfect contrast ratios and so on. Input lag does take a slight hit at around 12ms but if you're going for 4k you're probably into more visual games than multiplayer FPS so the TV makes a great deal of sense. You get the four HDMI 2.1 ports as well, although I'd have preferred if one of them was DP 1.4 DSc. I really don't get the point of tanking your frame rate to get 4k at 27", it's such a waste of pixels.
Yep, all LCD monitors are irrelevant now after 48" OLED.
@@pasilehto The CX 48 Oled is quite pricy. It's not within the reach of many.
@@Safetytrousers Usually people looking to buy $800+ monitor can justify stretching the budget if its worth the additional benefits. This isn't exactly the budget category we're talking about here, its 1 of the best monitors on the market. We all know the best isn't cheap :p

I have this monitor and it's great. One thing that I really like is that 4k at 27" gives a crazy high dot pitch. Display looks fabulous like a retina mac.
Agreed, I picked up one about a month ago and it's amazing. The pixel density is crazy. I can't wait till I can finally get my hands on a RTX 3080 so I can really take full advantage of it.
@@e2rqey Imagine thinking 3080 with it's 10GB of VRAM is future-proof and enough for great 4k experience. Consider RX 6800 XT.
@@e2rqey You can't but you will have to.
@@DrewnioQ Exactly. That's why I hesitated in picking up an RTX 3080. I'd probably have swallowed a ~€900 (EU atm) RTX 3080 20 GB, but even the 10 GB ones are unavailable and/or inflated (never seen one under €800 and that was on launch day for a few hours only - no thanks). Now the 20 GB version or the 16 GB RTX 3070 are unlikely to ever release unless Nvidia feels the heat (pun unintended) from AMD.
RX 6800 XT it is for me then, suck it Ngreedia with your stupid manufacturing woes and stagnant improvements (RTX 3090 compared vs 2080 Ti (which in itself was pitiful w/ worse bang4buck than GTX 1080 Ti) is barely ~46% faster at an even higher price [regardless of VRAM which changes performance in extreme scenarios], source: czcams.com/video/VjOnWT9U96g/video.html ). I don't get why anyone is cheering Ampere, it's another flop atm. If it were available at MSRP it would be decent, but by the point that happens (disregarding day one snack-ups and occasional tiny restocks) AMD Navi will almost surely be out en masse anyway.
Edit: Clarification that I obviously meant the 3080 20 GB is unlikely to release, not the already paper-launched one.
Yeah plays games great at 4k 144hz on my 3080. Think 10GB VRAM is enough for years to come.
You should include 0% to 100% response time tables as well for comparison. Future monitors will have faster total response times but your numbers may remain the same.

Hi,
I am looking for a decent 21:9 1440p monitor which I can use for work and gaming. Both mt laptops are Alienware. So it needs to be G-sync. Aiming for around the AUD $1,000 range.
Some phillips monitors were very good with DP 1.4 and HDMI 2. USB 3.2 hub, speakers and KVM capability. Only issue the screen.
What would you suggest?
I waited a long time for this monitor to become available and I've got no regrets buying it.
Doom Eternal and everything else you can throw at it looks fantastic!!!!

@@nickgarcia1292 I am. I'm no expert and have only had it a few hours so only played 1 HDR enabled game (of mine) thus far and I'm in slight awe of how it's transformed the game
@@nickgarcia1292 the HDR performance wasn't a factor when purchasing this monitor. It was mainly it's 4k and refresh rate and the RGB is also a nice touch...
@@TinyShnutz hey curious, i enabled HDR and its fine in daylight settings but when its at night in the game its super dark. is that just HDR effect?
@@mannyfresh7065 Hey Emanuel, unfortunately I'm no expert (like our friends on this channel) but I suspect it is a side-effect of it not being 'true HDR', or only HDR600. I have found that you can adjust the HDR setting in game though - not sure if that's true for all games as I've literally only been playing Gears 5 lately. Another thing to consider, which might not be directly related is that you should check out 'Windows HD Colour settings' under Display Settings as I found that sometimes the monitor wasn't kicking out of HDR after closing Gears which left everything really dark, beyond the minimum brightness that the monitor will normally let you go to. Hope this helps somewhat 😄
the hdmi 2.0 ports are intentional. of course to play with your ps5 on 120 hz on 4k they want you to buy a oled tv from lg...
@Hardware Unboxed - Thank you Tim, been waiting a while for this review/in-depth look at it. Interesting technology in what I'd say is this late-stage of being hamstrung by HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 and so utilising technologies like Display Stream Compression to deal with that bottleneck. Now that HDMI 2.1 has finally arrived with the latest generation of GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD, that will be good news and companies like LG especially, who has released an array of OLED TVs with HDMI 2.1 for the last 2-3 years, will FINALLY release a number of high quality monitors with HDMI 2.1 in there. We can look forward to a whole new generation of fantastic displays taking better advantage of that bandwidth through the I/O being broadened. The improving Contrast Ratios of LG's Nano IPS panels is a good sign of what is to come in the coming couple years.
Thanks for the review
with HDMI 2.1 i would have been in the market for this one... guess i'll wait some more then, HDR 1000 also wouldn't hurt.
HDR1000 adds at least $500 to the price tag, and is pointless without FALD anyway, which adds another $1000+. Basically HDR is not worth it unless you go with an Oled TV. This monitor is great without HDR though.
@@richardfeynman7491 hdr looks a lot better than sdr, and if an 800 dollar monitor didn’t have hdr that would be very disappointing
@@PenguinoPlays I've had this monitor for a few days. HDR on some content looks a bit better than SDR I think. Actually the HDR performance in Far Cry 5 is very nice. For the most part it's just a gimmick though, and shouldn't be the reason for buying this.
Yeah, if it had HDMI 2.1 both console and pc gamers would benefit
@@richardfeynman7491 I mean, that's kind of the argument being made. Any HDR specification under HDR1000 isn't proper HDR and is, as you said, just a gimmick to increase monitor price. In other words, this monitor should have had better HDR support or no HDR support.
one incredibly downside of the monitor, for me at least, is that everytime you boot the system / wake the monitor the rgb goes to 100% brightness before dimming down to whatever you set your light settings to.
So in the evening or at night it can be quite blinding, and if you got a window near you your neighbours will not appreciate your new monitor.
Cant you turn off RGB?
Are you looking directly at that RGB while the monitor is turning on so it's blinding? RGB is in the back and I would guess that's not where you look that often, but maybe I'm wrong. I don't have the monitor so I cannot speak from experience, but it seems to me it would just be annoying rather than actually blinding or something.
it should be pretty easy to open the back panel and disconnect the power header to the rgb
@CerebuZ I mean they are very small problems but it should be fixed ASAP because should only take a quick update and it was never needed in the first place.
thanks, was waiting for this video. how would it look if i ran some old games in 1080p or 1440p? a lot worse than native? even if 1080p is 4x less pixels?
used it for a month now-bloody amazing stuff! Love it! I am not sold on the HDR but i dont care much about it anyway.
I thought it was 16 zones of local dimming?
Edit: Everywhere else is claiming that it has 16 zones of local dimming.
It'd be nice if you expanded on this aspect a bit, as currently, the only (affordable) monitors with local dimming have 8 zones, so I'd be interested in seeing how doubling the number of zones improves things, especially seeing as it would actually allow for a symmetric (4x4) layout as opposed to (2x4).
The local dimming is horrendous, you would do well to just turn it off
8 vs 16 dosent make a different sadly
It does have 16 zones.
I have this monitor. The HDR just isn't good. Scenes get too dark or too oversaturated by just looking around. If you really want a fantastic HDR experience this isn't it. It's a fantastic SDR experience otherwise.
The zones don't really matter too much if it's edge lit.
I can confirm having plugged my One X into it it supports VRR.
On HDMI 2.1. It isn’t needed for next gen consoles, they won’t be hitting 4K120 on anything but sidescrollers. 4K60 is the aim for next gen games with 1080p120 or 1440p120 modes on games which it makes sense for a higher fps.
Wait. Xbox series X and PS5 are both marketed 4k120.
@@animeshmeshram5997 Just marketing because they’re capable of reaching either but can reach both on the most basic of games.
There’s rumours the cable in the PS5 box isn’t even a 2.1 cable.
@@cp_vaughny5000 It's been confirmed the PS5 cable is 2.1 - the confusion came about because of how it was labelled.
But when it does do 120Hz it would be frustrating you couldn't experience that.

Not next-gen. Needs HDMI 2.1 for that.
Also, while a good monitor, I'd prefer 30" for a 4K Monitor.
We need actual HDR on monitors too. This thing sucks next to 4K OLED HDR TVs.
I agree, but I'm considering CHG70 with 80cm screen, and hdr600, but its only QHD and even as it is the ghosting is terrible at 60 hertz so you must have decent GPU to get 144hz. Even with latest GPUs I don't think you can get 4k 144 hz in games. My current hardware (vega 64) gives me 60 fps in red dead redemption 2 afaik on medium/high settings, can't remember now. So my guess is QHD is still the way to go unless we are talking about less demanding titles.

@@artiombeknazaryan7542 Well, 4k 120hz on consoles may be marketing hype right now but future proofing is never a bad thing. Who knows, maybe the PS 5 pro can hit it, even with low textures XD
Whether it hits high refresh rates at launch isn't really important. I don't think Sony would have used the more expensive hdmi 2.1 if they didn't think the ps5 would absolutely need the bandwidth in the future. That being said, I still bought this monitor for both my pc and my ps5 on pre-order.
@@Mean_Mr_Grinch you realize that a system like PS5 with twice less computational power as current gen GPUs wont be able to get to 120 fps in 4K? Both Sony and MS clearly stated they will try to concentrate on 4K60FPS experience. The HDMI2.1 is a massive con to force people to buy new TVs. And if you are using PC the display port will handle the job.

I was just joking about the 2.1 but it’s one of the few things that is not present in 99% of the monitors on the market. I just thought it was weird to call the monitor next gen.
@@MR-gold-VR-b6j Well this monitor does have a lot that the olden gen of 4k monitors don't have. This is the first to have DP 1.4 with DSC for example, so you can actually get lossless 144hz 4k with 10 bit colour.

Just picked up a LG Nanocell 8 Series 2020 TV to support next gen consoles, and it's a beautiful display!
Possibly a dumb question but when I try to look for this monitor it keeps showing 27gn950-b in most stores. Is the -b signifying it is a different model? In essence, I'm asking if they are the same product or if there are differences, what are they?

I was eyeing this monitor since it's announcement. Unfortunately it's listed at $1400 SGD lol.... I will wait for more something not stupidly priced.
Aaaand that 1400$ have a lot of problem. For this price it should have everything FINE.
In future I will be looking for IPS or something different if something better will be invented. 3840x1600 ultra wide at least 100Hz for round 800$.
Just go with Odyssey G7. Save you some cash for future upgrade like graphic cards.

@@ybsensei5072 I don't have this issue. It seems like depend on luck. 😂
So does hdmi2.1 cable make a big difference compared to your regular hdmi?
So is it definitely a good idea to turn on hdr for this panel or is staying sdr better? I've heard conflicting things while watching alot of videos.
I've been looking at this for a while... an I'm considering waiting for the next generation of it.
My actual main issue is that I want 3 monitors that match bezel wise... but I don't need (and defo can't afford!) 3 of these hahaha! I want the same enclosure but with a 4k 60hz panel with the same colour accuracy and profile.
It looks like the 850 has a 60hz looking equivalent that seemed to when i skimmed through some stuff, matches it pretty closely with the exception of 144hz - anyone else got any thoughts on this?
I can totally understand wanting the same monitor when using a 3-m setup, especially when you want to use them in expanded screen mode from time to time.
Just a question though, but do you have the hardware to run 3 4k displays at 144hz? Because that is what this monitor is targeting.
Personally, for a 3 monitor setup, I would go for 3 1440p displays at 144hz. You don't really need 4k for most work- and coding applications, and for gaming I would prefer 1440p at a sustained 144hz over 3 monitors rather than a choppy 3x 2160p experience because the graphics card cannot keep up with the 4k output.
The only real benefit I see of 4k in that regard is for media consumption, but that assumes you got plenty of wide-screen 4k movies and tv series laying around.
Another benefit of 2k / 1440p, at the time of writing at least, is that there is much more competition in that panel range, meaning you get relatively cheaper panels with better contrast ratio and less overshoot (assuming you go for a reputable brand like LG).
Same thoughts here. I want a 2 monitor setup with matching bezels, but can't afford to buy two of these monitors.
So I'm thinking to go with two other lg monitors that have matching bezels: one 1440p 144hz for gaming, and one 4k 60hz for media consumption/editing. (LG 27GL850-B and LG 27UL650-W) Like that i spend half the money while still getting 4k and high refresh rate; just in different monitors. But since all the games I'd like to play in 4k are not competitive (60hz is enough), I think this is a better/cheaper solution.
Look through comments of this video. There was someone saying lg 27gn950 isn't exactly multimonitor friendly as it has deep sleep that loses signal to the pc, so that you have to always rearrange your windows and you get popup for new sound device etc after waking from sleep. This deep sleep feature cannot be disabled, unless lg addresses that on a firmware in the future.
I loved everything about this Monitor except the size. I wish it came in 32-35" size. 4K needs little bit bigger size than 27".
exactly, 4k on 27" is pointless.
Agreed 32" minimum for 4k.
@StreamTech yep same, 32 too big for me
I'm the exact same. Waiting on a high refresh 32" 4k or a ultrawide equivalent
Was thinking the exact same thing but I also would like VA like contrast then I would consider it perfect for what I wish in a monitor.
I just ordered it at Best Buy and on Amazon I ordered the AmazonBasics Adjustable Monitor Arm and Cable Matters VESA certified braided displayport 1.4 cable.
I'll replace the LG monitor stand with the AmazonBasics. I can't wait to get this thing running on the new RT6900XT & Ryzen 5950X !
Where could i find ICC profile and calibration of this monitor?
Not fully next gen yet though, no HDMI 2.1
Especially interested in eve spectrum as it has 2.1 and same panel
Bruh you don't need hdmi 2.1 for 1440p 144hz , 1440p at 144hz is easy done on hdmi 2.0
Why would it need HDMI 2.1? Display port will already support 4K at 144hz so there is no need for HDMI. Especially since Gsync only works via display port in the first place.

While I'm early, may as well ask. Does the Gigabyte G34WQC a panel with the same type of performance as the G32QC? It's a new 400 USD 1440p 144hz VA ultrawide, and the price is amazing for an ultrawide. I don't see any detailed reviews on it yet.

Really hoped 5000, series review was today
The CPUs come out tomorrow. Not today. It is literally not possible for a review to come out today. The tech channels on CZcams will probably release their video tomorrow and over the next few days. The channels, that got review units probably already finished their testing and will more likely release their stuff tomorrow, but no one will release anything about the new CPUs today, because of contracts and NDAs.
@@ThorsShadow You basically summed up what people following tech news already know, but with an added speculation that it could not be released today. It could as the NDAs for the reviewers sometimes end even before the launch day such as for 3070 when we got reviews two days before it launched. As there are no reviews out it's probably not the case for Ryzen 5000 but you make it as if it could never happen.
So I got this monitor and I love it. However, should I set it to RGB FULL or YCbCR 444 limited? I honestly can't see the difference.
I got this monitor about 2 months ago and I cannot recommend it enough. For the price you pay, it’s an absolutely amazing monitor. Get it.
I would never spend that kind of money today on a monitor that doesn't have HDMI 2.1. That's crazy!
I mean, if it's for PC, then you would want to use HDMI 2.1 anyway.
@@richardfeynman7491 HIgher bandwidth than display port 1.4. Allows more special settings at high refresh and variable refresh rate.
@@Chibling Display port 1.4 with DSC provides sufficient bandwidth for 4k 144Hz 10 bit colour with VRR. In fact it can do 165Hz, the monitor just doesn't let you oc it.
While HDMI 2.1 has the bandwidth for this, it will likely only be able to do 120Hz due to standards set by HDMI. Likely you would still want to use DP 1.4 with DSC over HDMI 2.1 for PC use.
@@richardfeynman7491 Diplayport 2.0 is coming soon too which will allow 4k high refresh and other super high stats + HDR etc. I will likely get a 3440x1440p 144hz VA widescreen with 1.4 display port and freesync. That or a TV with HDMI 2.1. I'm conflicted.
@@Chibling That's true, you might be able to get 200Hz+ 4k monitors then. We are a long way away from being able to computationally drive such refresh rates at 4k though. 144Hz at 4k should be sufficient until micro-LED or Oled computer monitors exist.
