[OLD] What's happening to the S.H.MonsterArts Line? Part 2

- Part 2 is here. Was I too harsh? Probably. But at the same time I'm not cutting the line any slack. I refuse to accept these quote on quote "High end collectibles" as they are now. Once again I know there are inconsistencies through the editing but honestly that doesn't matter in a video like this. Hopefully Tamashii and Bandai listen. Because if they don't I ain't buying a SHMA figure ever again.

SHMA: degrades in quality
NECA: increases quality
SHMA: surprised Pikachu face
Nailuj29 Yes, that is something I noticed. I’m conflicted between SHMA Godzilla 2019, or NECA 2019 Atomic Breath Godzilla. Which one would you recommend?
@@dafuqman well the neca atomic breath hasn't come out yet so we will not know if anything is wrong with it but the shma is good. Eyes are inconsistent. Mine are fine but I have seen really shitty ones and the atomic breath is like the necas because it plugs in to the mouth without a stand but the way it plugs in is problematic. The atomic breath piece plugs into a spare jaw but the effect piece is heavy so it wears down the alt jaw's ball joint but besides that is has pretty good articulation and is one of my favorite shma figures. But if you are on a budget the neca looks good so far but so did the base figure and we all know how that turned out
I own the Godzilla 2019 Neca figure, the figure looks good but the possibility could be better
But then NECA decreased in quality
@@somekidnamedqai what figures?
Didn't the 1954 puppet/suit have Derp eyes?
Technically yes but the suit's eyes were symmetrical. On the figure it just looks stupid.
This worlds toys are dying then there will be nothing to collect rip toys from Japan you were better than America
Thepigeonreturns Studios actually they weren't symmetrical, they were cock eyes in some parts and looking strait forward in others
yes
Yes it does
I think the 54's derp eyes are fine. Only because he kinda had derp eyes in the film
Yes, they were derped in the film. But in the film they were still symmetrical. But on the SHMA they're asymmetrical. So no I don't like the derp eyes on the figure.
Super Mariozilla oh, ok. We all have our opinions
gjb2003 Indeed. And I respect yours.
Super Mariozilla as I do yours
Pupils are to big.
You should do an update
Yeah he should.
He will one he gets every SHMA figure
patrick: maybe we should take the sh monsterarts line and push it somewhere else
But then we wouldn't get any new figures
Maybe you should shut up and buy the s.h monsterarts spacegodzilla
*Woah there calm down there’s children watching!!!*
Hopefully the KotM line will be good. Although I'm worried that Ghidorah's paint job will be worse than the prototype's. The toyfair pics really show a weaker gold. I guess we have to wait.
Kostas The SadKeftes Titanus Godzilla looks fantastic however King Ghidorah is a bit scary the paint job is a little dull paint job also I don’t exactly care that much but hey some people are saying they enjoy it
I have both Godzilla and King Ghidorah and I honestly like the paint job. Compared to the previous King Ghidorahs, ya it's dull but it's still a decent paint job as it's own imo

When's Part 3? 🤔🤨
Gimme Tokiz we definitely need a part 3 considering we have new figures like the 2019 figures...
I think the '74 Mechagodzilla COULD have potential. He had a large arsenal in the movie and I feel they could incorporate them well if they actually try.
Traci Lombardi we really need more showa monsters (beside Godzilla) in this line
Daniel Barnes I totally agree. I think we should have '64 Mothra and Larva, along with '64 Rodan and Ghidorah. It would also be cool to see Jet Jaguar, Megalon and Titanosaurus (maybe Hedorah) (also I haven't mentioned some because Revoltech made those figures already so I would imagine it would be hard to do along with the fact that Revoltech Goji figures size fit well too I think.)
Traci Lombardi I feel like they're going back to their roots with 74 MechaGoji and MonsterPlanetGoji
And then Showa MG was a piece of shit with one beam and a pair of missile hands, and those stupid goddamn arm rings.
@@tracilombardi5000 this aged well, we're getting Hedorah.
To save the line. Make Showa figures!!!!!!!!

yah ,make 55 goji and megalon with 55 anguiros.

i paid $170 for rebith Godzilla and was SOOOO Worth it
Dogezilla King of all I got mine for $75
I got mine for $109 and it was worth it!
i have noob zilla for 82$
I saw mine at Barnes and nobles for 40 dollars I was nine :(
Neca didnt deserve to lose the license
Agreed
To be fair, the lack of paint on 1954 Goji can be excused because it can be considered as a tie in to the black and white appearance of the movie.
And the suit face did look derpy from the front, bro lookin like kermit's dead uncle
Tamashii 2011:yay a new line and a new beginning I really hope this will be a great journey for this line
Tamashii 2014-2016 or something idk:ya know what f the fans we don’t really care about them anymore ok guys what we care about is money, money is more important than our fans so f them
This is why I buy from Neca and Bandai. Neca keeps getting better and better with more to offer and Bandai’s figures always look great, the articulation isn’t the best but always use your imagination to have fun with those.
I tend to not mind bandai's regular (cheaper) line but I need a better detailed Destroyah and I hate that SH is the only line that has one. Also don't forget Sega, they have good detail as well.
Well sadly in 2020 Neca lost the License to do more Godzilla figures which was really disappointing to hear
This video becomes a 2 years old tomorrow
Not defending Bandai, yeah the more recent SHMA's have been declining badly in quality. But I wanted to throw out there a few things, just to give a better understanding of how some things work, and how some comparisons are often Apples and Oranges.
- Cost - Does not really relate to size. Other than grams of plastic. The bigger driver of costs is the complexity of the tooling necessary for the figure. How many separate pieces does it need? How many are 2 plastic composite pieces requiring complicated molding? How many require 3, 4 or 5 part molds to form instead of the more traditional 2 part? SM mentions the 2014 Spitfire vs the original 2014 as a question of why costs went up. The main torso is dual molded in 2 colors of plastic. That's more complex (and much much slower in production.) King Ghidorah is not expensive simply based on size, but also on number of parts. There are exceptions to this where they will up the price based on volume, such as Destroyah, but generally the price begins based on the production budget and needs. The only way that size directly impacts price is actually in terms of shelf footprint. Warehouse and retail pricing in part calculates out based on how many products you can fit in per square foot of shelving. Bigger products take up more room, hence cost more. Smaller products that take up less real estate will often bring higher margin. This is buffered with the desire to be noticeable on the shelf. But if a store can only stock 2 King Ghidorah's in a space that they can stock 5 Burning G's. Well they still want the same return on that space, so each will be priced accordingly.
- Comparing to X-Plus - See above. Here's the dirty dirty secret. X-Plus is actually the insanely overpriced product. Almost criminally so. They are incredibly simple tooling. Just nice detailed tooling for vinyl (a much lower pressure, lower temperature plastic from the ABS used in the SHMA's.) . X-Plus's tooling likely costs a fraction of what Bandai's SHMA does. The big vinyl's are pure profit. This allows them to cycle their molds a lot less, as they can recoup their investment on far fewer pieces produced. Why does Bandai do so many repaints? Because they have to pay for the tooling. And the margins on an SHMA are a fraction of what they are on an X-Plus. If you wonder why Bandai talks about making SHMA Zero type figures? This is why. The articulated figures have a much lower margin due to the complexity of production. Similarly NECA has lower production costs because their figures are made mainly of Vinyl and recycled chewing gum. They largely avoid the more expensive to work with ABS (that provides sturdiness and durability). Vinyl is cheaper and easier to work with and does not require as expensive or as precise tooling. It has much lower tolerances.
- The most expensive and most finite resource is factory time.Actual production time on a factory floor is carefully rationed and constantly assessed to bring its maximum return. Even if a line is profitable it may not be as profitable as another line, which might be considered better use of that finite factory time. SM compares recent SHMA's tp recent SHFA's, and therein lies the secret. SHFA are less complex, sell better and bring a higher margin than the SHMA's. Hence they get better factory priority. Or rather they began to displace the SHMA's at the upper tier factories. Around 2014 SHMA shifted to a different more cost effective factory. Note that that is when the QC seemingly took a noticeable dump. It's a thorny problem. We want SHMA's, but Bandai needs margins on them. And outside of years when there is a North American Godzilla movie release, they don't get the same returns that they do from the SHMA's.
Once again, not defending Bandai or SHMA. Just talking about how things actually work, and what you need to look at to make fair comparisons. Here endeth the lesson.
Some of that was actually stuff I never knew. Thanks for the info!
andrew taylor actually if you clean up Shin with a little acetone the figure is molded in red, not two tones
MY 2 CENTS I think for two color molding I meant the 2014 Spitfire, which is a mix of trans or silvered blue and normal black/dark green. They. Hanged the spine color for the re-release.
Andrew Taylor well to be fair to x plus, they do buy the rights to sculpts and need to pay their sculptors acceptable wages. If i was a sculptor and wasn't making good money I'd sell my sculpts myself and cut out x plus. Thus they need to actually pay them decent wages in order to reduce employee turnover. Not to mention painters and when they buy sculpt rights from elite sculptors like yuji sakai. Which is probably why the price of sh monster arts figures have gone up, not sure I recall yuji Sakai being credited for the sculpts in the early years. Could be wrong tho. Also not to mention tohos trademarks have probably gone up since 2014, and also likely have a tiered rights system for the style of merchandise.

I really really really love the way you talking about the S.H.MonsterArts lines in these 2 review, especially your tone, XD. and I am totally with you about the price, repaint mod and lack of beam effect/ accessories issues. please do the part 3, please. :)
I'm fine with repaints as long as they release new figures along side them because it's a chance for people who didn't get the original releases.
Man I could not agree with you more! The way Bandai is treating this line is disgraceful and its very disappointing that this is happening. Anyway I love you for making this video! The production and editing is awesome and hilarious! Thank you for saying what needs to be said about the Sh Monsterarts line!
I couldn't agree more they are going down hill with the pricing and the painting with the upcoming release's
Refrocks I agree has a little child I loved Godzilla and this line but I wanted to wait until I was a little older to be able to handle these figures but now they are treating this line like a joke let’s hope they save the line only time will tell
I’m more of a Neca collector myself and I’ll admit there’s a gamble whenever buying their figures where they might be broken in the package. But the fact that they emphasis more to be movie accurate as possible with the paint and sculpt is the reason I collect their figures.....also the price is stupid good for the quality you’re getting.
Will Neca ever make figures for people like Destroyah and Battra?

I'm loving the way your editing your videos man. Keep it up!
I was very happy they did re-paints. It allowed me to pick them up.
Well in 2019 Godzilla King of the monsters/Godzilla 2 is coming out and King ghidorah , mothra and rodan are in it and if sh monster arts make them hopefully they will be good
There's flaws: The S.H Monsterarts 2019 King Ghidorah doesn't have any beams, costs $180, the 2019 Mothra doesn't come with any beams, and 2019 Rodan doesn't have wings like the S.H Monsterarts Fire Rodan. 😔
But there's some good news: the 1995 Gamera is coming out, but it's a Web Exclusive, but it has accessories.
I do agree with you on Shin Godzilla. it's pretty bad. I did hear that NECA is making their own Shin Godzilla.
Mason Ramone yep, release should be in February apparently.

I see why shin Godzilla sculpt and paint is like that. He was bloody through out the whole film and his sculpt is another story. I also got a question. If you have both of these, which is better? SH monstersrts shin Godzilla or neca shin Godzilla
looks like its time for part 3
I do agree with this.
The prices are too high for my taste.
And some of the figures down grading.
Now that neca doesn't have the rights anymore, I don't know what articulated kaiju figures to collect in the future that is at a affordable price.
Hi! I am from the future and I have to introduce HIYA!
I don’t think shin is bad actually he looks good
Im sorta confused about these videos, not going to lie. Cause it seems like, based on what you said, more than half of all these figures are great. "What's happening" implies that the recent releases have all been bad, but from what I see in your videos it seems like there has only ever been a bad apple every once in a while. And a few of them Im not sure I understand the criticism. Shin and 1954 look amazing. And then when it comes to price, I also didn't see a major issue. $60-$100 for an item without accessories seems fair, and $100-150 with. Bigger figures, $150-250. The prices seem fine for me, not to mention that I myself cannot afford to buy any of them because I dont earn that much.
And while Im aware that this is an older video, I do want to comment that any hesitation I had with this line, any doubt, any belief that the quality would continue to drop was destroyed with the releases to follow Shin. Godzilla 2002 was awesome. The Kotm figures are awesome.
now in 2021 i have many of the modern figures and we see some improvments
Agreed Biollante, Godzilla 2001 heat ray ver and more are great! 👌
I also I think bandai has started to realize what they're doing
I just love how every time the accessories were lacking, he makes the figure shrug with a derpy face.
I've customized my figures eyes when customized the sculpt to whatever thing im planning and the eyes aren't that bad for when i customize them myself but i do agree with you vinny this line is going to hell unless they release some now sculpt * cough cough * 2004, megaguries (cant spell for shit), orga, king ceaser, anguris (can't spell for shit yet again), baragon, varan, headorah, manda, etc * cough *

Super Mariozilla but seriously Tamashii need to step up their game or they are probably going to have mustaches all over their figures.
phenomenal productions I wouldn't be surprised
This is why NECA is better better details and rarely a nightmare to collectors I was going to buy the 2014 godzilla but after seeing everyones with derp eyes I didnt want it anymore and looks at neca and its better
This would have EASILY been avoided if they stuck to being screen accurate and giving the figures accessories.
The first monsterarts were great. They had good articulation, good painting and many accessories. Now we only have repaints that nobody asked for and very poor quality control. Shin sucks. I agree with super Mariozilla.

maybe the poster versions of mecha godzilla and godzilla 1993 will pick it back up.
You know what my biggest problem is with the line? ITS TO EXPENSIVE!!! I've seen listings for godzilla jr for $80 TO 180!!! WTF!!!
And for the 54 Godzilla, I think derby eyes were accurate to the movie
But the problem with shin is his mouth can't close properle

no problem, i do agree with your opinions, i will get a couple of the SHMA but they really need to improve on their figures
NDKfilms I know right?
wow, 4 dislikes, that sucks
The only way I could see these problems being fixed is for consumers/fans to be more vocal about these problems directly towards both Tamashii Nations and Bandai, This could show how passionate we are for this line but I don't know what the outcome would be in terms of the companies reactions & btw How's the sculpt for Shin Godzilla inaccurate? From what I've heard they used the same computer model from the movie
SmashBlaster 1-Up that is right. I did some detailed comparisons and the figure is not completely accurate. It's mostly accurate but not all accurate.
But what points of the figure weren't accurate specifically?
SmashBlaster 1-Up The head, legs, texture, and tail
Are you planning on getting the supposed Mechagodzilla 1974 figure or the Tamashii MIX poster Mechagodzilla?
The problem they faced with the 1954 Godzilla is that the film was in b&w, and if they painted it with colours, the diehard buffs would complain. The painting isn't perfect, but you can always touch up yourself. For someone like myself who just discovered these figures, the repaints offer another opportunity to collect them, though personally, I'm aiming for just one which is either 2002 or 1989.
You ever gonna make a part 3? Because so much more have released and so much more are on the way, like g19, ghidorah 2019, mothra 2019, rodan 2019, mechagodzilla 21, ultima, earth, biollante repaint, kiryu goji, fw Godzilla, battle gigan, etc
This guy is so Lucky he hasn’t seen the future of shma
Wait if you hate the figures than why do you still have them then hmm?
I have news for everyone
to be honest i can forgive the fact that the 1954 godzilla one has little to no paint , since it only black and grey it honors the original film ( since its black and white ) and the derp eyes is kinda accurect , but its still not enough to save it , from the lack of acessories and the price .
Also in the sweatshop's defense, how would you like to be on an assembly line painting the same figure X amount of times within X of time? Yeah you'd be hard pressed to keep all 100% of them perfect too.
The bad paint on the 1954 was on purpose to reflect the noir look of the movie
As a kid I don’t really care about anything wrong with the figures all I want is actually a sh monster arts figure even a bootleg
The other guy was definitely reading off a script but I get your point

2014 is good in the back
It is very weird that the Ultraman figures are getting better but not the monsterarts
What it's just an ordinary shin Godzilla figure oh my goodness Squidward
BE GREATFUL OF THE PRISES ARE SO LOW BECAUSE NOW THEY ARE LIKE BOI IS LIKE 1K DOLLARS
To anyone who complains about the repaints, kindly get bent. Repaints provide an opportunity to obtain figures that have long been out of stock, fix issues the original figure had, and allow the company to spend time on new sculpts. Not everyone knew about S.H. Monsterarts when the line started and new collectors should have the opportunity. It seems odd that you can sit there and complain about the rise in price for these figures in aftermarket and complain about repaints at the same time.
I understand that. And I wasn't exactly complaining about that. But I should've been more clear. You are correct, the repaints do allow newcomers in the line to obtain them. It kind of varies with collectors like me because I have pretty much almost all the old releases so that's kind of why I complain about them. At the same time I probably shouldn't have complained about the repaints now that you mention it. I do understand what you mean and I should've been more clear on that.
Super Mariozilla I was making more of a general statement because I have heard the same complaint constantly from multiple sources.

in 2011 and 2012 Tamashii had a line called Ultra-Act for all of the Ultraman stuff. They had tons of amazing prototypes like Zetton, Baltan 1, and Metron that never came out. The line focused less on kaiju and aliens and exclusively on the Ultras. The releases slowed down and soon they weren't even pumping out new characters anymore; just re-releases of the same characters over and over again. The last thing that came out from Ultra-Act was a couple years ago and the line officially died at the end of 2015 when SH Figuarts acquired Ultraman. There is some hope to the story though, last year SH Figuarts made their own Ultraman that was a totally new sculpt with the benefit of a bunch of accessories. The very second Ultraman figure they put out was Baltan 1! Likely based on that 2011 prototype never released! The next ones in the line were more kaiju and aliens, finally after so many years of patience I'm getting all those characters that were teased and never released like Zetton and Metron. The quality and paint on them are better than ever. We have the two brand new Showa and Poster Heisei Mechagodzillas coming out worth being excited for, especially because the mechanical kaiju are their strong point with no paint QC issues ever in the past. They don't want this line to die, that would be a well of money run dry. The more we criticize the line when it fails and praise it when it succeeds, the more power we have to have our concerns heard. I think we are taking a step in the right direction. We can't let them make a quick buck off of us for releasing subpar products, but we have to support them in their successes
Well said my friend.
