  • Reviewing the legendary Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS. This might be one of the best lenses for Sony A7iii, if not a best Sony lens! A great and versatile lens that offers lots of performance in a reasonable package. The 24-105mm is a solid performer in stills as well as video. YES! Just bought it in November, use is on my Sony A7C, it is a good all around travel lens, then take a small fast prime and you have a nice small two lens kit (I have the Sony 28mm f2, others that I know have the Sony 55mm f1.8).

    Amazing Lens. I used to shoot Nikon and the performance is just unbelievable with this lens on a A7III. Before it was a ratio of 7 out of 10 blurred photos with Nikon. Now it's 8 out of 10 that are perfectly in focus and sharp. Absolutely love this lens. Great review!

    This was the first lens that came with my a7iii when I bought it. Because of that I thought I needed to invest in better glass so I spent a LOT getting others and guess which one I keep on my camera unless there is a specific reason to use another??? Yep, that's right, the 24-105mm F4 G. I even sold a print of a photo I shot with this lens for $500 and I'm a video guy more than a photographer. It is an awesome all terrain tool for both video and photography. When you're in unpredictable situations this lens is the safest most dependable solution to make sure you get the shot.

    I got one mainly because of this video. I love it. A bit of corner and edge softness at f4-4.5 and at 24 f22. It's a bit too heavy for my liking and zooming in video is hard but otherwise it takes great photos.

    Great stuff! Is this lens too heavy where having it always on the camera in my backpack would be a concern? I originally bought the Tamron 28-75mm, but I'm considering going for this instead because of the extra reach.

  • @kevinthekorean
    @kevinthekorean Před 3 lety +7

    Debated this and the 24-70 f/2.8 but this lens seems to hold up just as well and has the extra FL range. It’s also $600 cheaper than the 24-70 used so I grabbed the 24-105 and a 24 f/1.4 GM with the extra cash I saved (plus $450) but still, two lenses for just $450 more than one lens is a great deal!

    Got this lens instead of the kit lens and strongly recommend it. Good for SO many things and an excellent value. Wide? Yes. Somewhat tall? Also yes. Pairs nicely with a good telephoto (yes I'm looking at either the Sigma 100-400mm or the Sony 100-400 - both good). 2 lenses covering nearly any shot you'll need. If you add to that a decent macro lens you're set.
    Were you to get just one lens for a Sony full frame camera, this is the one that I would recommend.

    This lens works great on the DJI R2 pro gimbal. Just balance with lens barrel half way extended and the powerful motors on the R2 handle it with no issue. Not to mention the APS-C mode on the A7iii makes this lens even more versatile!

  • @Joker5665jn
    @Joker5665jn Před 4 lety +9

    I have this lens, the 16-35 f4, the 28 f2 and the A7III (I only shoot as a hobbyist). I'll take the 16-35 and 28 if I'm bringing my gimbal, but if it's just straight photography I'll use the 24-105. The f4 will limit your ability to get as narrow a depth of field as you may want (if shooting mostly portraits this may be an issue), but with the A7III I never feel like the f4 is a hindrance in regards to low light exposure.
    As a travel lens I find myself usually keeping it at 24 mm, so I am not sure if I would gel with Tamron 28-75. If I ever need to go wider than 24, most circumstances will allow for me to bump up the zoom to around 30mm and take panoramas. I did that last year on a trip to Japan and the handheld panoramas came out amazing.
    I remember when I was researching this lens before I bought it I read in a review that it was the lens equivalent of a nicer SUV; it has enough versatility to handle any situation while not particularly excelling in any one area.
    I think my long-term plan is to keep the 24-105 and sell the 16-35 and the 28 for the 24 f1.4 G Master. The SUV and the roadster.
    Thanks for doing a review on this lens. It always seems to be overlooked.

    Great review video mate! I have a G-master 16-35 f.28 and a Sony 85 f.18. I bought those lenses because I started doing wedding videos, last year did 6 videos even though I'm a software engineer. I have a gimbal so It's fine when I do have a client I can take all my gear along with the camera and lenses. However, I do travel and taking my heavy gimbal + lenses is impossible! I had a Gh5 and the image stabilisation on that camera was amazing I used to film completely hand held and travelling was too easy! Unfortunately, I can't do that with my Sony a7iii and the lenses that I have because the videos are too shaky. I'm going to Bali in April and would like to continue doing my travel videos so I have been seriously thinking about buying this lens for two main reasons: Image Stabilisation and the versatile focal length. When I travel I wanna keep light and wanted to be able to shot hand held. So thanks for your review!

    I love rewatching these videos during my downtime. This week I’ve been wondering if this lens outperforms the Tamron 28-200 Di III RXD by a wide enough margin. $1,200 is still a chunk of change compared to $729 both from BH: you lose 4mm wide, trade OSS for a wider or equitable f/4 aperture until 100mm, and have an extra 95mm throw past 105.
    If the Tamron’s rubbish by comparison, then the safe bet is probably still the standard trinity or a modified trinity of 12-24, 24-105, 100-400 or 70-200

      @@fmeng1861 35-150/2-2.8 is king right now. Need reach? I assigned a button to 35mm mode so the 150 is suddenly 225. It isn’t budget friendly but it basically combines 2 primes and most of 2 zooms.

    I own this lens and I've used it most of the time with my Sony A7R3. However I have recently purchased Sony 85 1.8 which is just stunning. This makes me sell 24-105 and invest in primes only (for photo). Just purchased 35 1.8 next one on my list will be Zeiss 55 1.8. For video on my Sony FS5 I prefer Canon lenses especially with manual focusing. They just feel much more solid. I use Canon 24-70 is f4( macro) and 70-200 f4 is II both with Speedbooster which is adding extra stop and making them f2.8. Another lens for video will be canon 16-35 is f4 which again with speedbooster will become f2.8. This will give me full range from 16 to 200mm. Considering clear image zoom I can go up to 300mm in 4K and up to 400 in full hd. Nice review though.

    Can the AFC of this lens and the A7III as a body keep track of the speed of your dog that comes running towards you quickly? Or is your 70-200 mm f4 better suited for this? Sory for writing errors, I use a translation app.

    • @StefanMalloch
      @StefanMalloch  Před 4 lety

      Its going to be a combination of the two. Something running at you will be challenging for most setups (- the A9) but the 70-200 was designed for sports and whatnot so should do the job.

  • @golden-dragon1442

    With the camera body stabilization on and the lens stabilization together would you still need a gimble for smooth run and gun videography? Or would the two stablizations of camera and lens on be enough?

    • @StefanMalloch
      @StefanMalloch  Před 4 lety

      Depends on the look you want. A gimble is next level stabilization. Don't expect gimble results without one. A lot more inconvenient though imo. 99% of the time I shoot without.

    How do you find the 24-28mm range of this lens? Biggest reason I consider this over the Tamron 28-75 is the additional 4mm at the short end. At least for me there's a huge different between 24 and 28.

    • @StefanMalloch
      @StefanMalloch  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm not one that gets caught up with the difference. If you shoot super wide all the time, maybe consider it. The 24-105 is a better quality lens. It's also slower but has IS.

    I think You forgot one thing - the main thing for video work: The constant aperture through its entire range, so your shot doesn't get darker as you zoom in.
    I'd never bother to buy this for photography in my life. But for video, this can save a shoot, where you might otherwise not have had some specific focal length to complete your job. And the stabilization certainly helps - along with Gyro data IBIS and focus breathing compensation, your footage might just look a whole lot more professional than it really was on a string...

      24-70 ZEI$$ have VERY bad reputation. I've seen comparison with some old manual minolta md zoom (35-70) and this sony was MUCH worst in terms of sharpness. I heard than some of the new example are better but I wouldn't risk it to buy one now.

    I am thinking about buying this lens in the near future, i have A7II currently with a Sigma MC-11 adapter and a Canon 24-70mm f2.8L II. What would You recommend? Keep this lens setup, or go with the Sony lens? Canon performs good, awesome quality, but autofocus is garbage unfortunately with this adapter method.

    • @StefanMalloch
      @StefanMalloch  Před 4 lety
