The manual linear focus response looks exciting.
This is exactly what I’ve been longing for! I’m no engineer but always had the understanding that rangefinder lenses were able to be small due to the flange distance without a mirror. I always wanted modern lenses in a classic rangefinder size, and now we might be there.
These make the a7c really compelling! I love what Sony is doing here with compact lenses.
Agree, they really change the ergonomics of the camera. And the 24 2.8 would be lovely on the a6xxx series cameras as well. Ive been longing for these lenses as i love the discreet rangefinder-style cameras. Hope Sony never departs from this.
I really want to see a video comparing the 40mm and 50mm. I feel like you have to choose one or the other because they’re so close.
Fantastic informative to the point understandable review x.
I appreciate this concise overview. Looking forward to perhaps more in-depth individual lens reviews.
I have been holding off to upgrade to full frame from Aps-c for the size of the lens. These looks good!
Nice!!! They look really good! Not bad for a full frame lens collection.
cool video, thanks. Used to shoot on a Minolta Rokkor 45mm f2 on my A7iii, definitely looking forward for a 40mm review.
I've been hoping for lenses like this.. i got the a7c for the compact size and mostly use it with vintage lenses, and the extreme size of the native autofocus lenses always bothered me. Love that these have proper manual focus and aperture control!
Greetings from Greece!! this 24mm f2.8 maybe would be my next lens for my a7iii
awesome lenses!! i was thinking on getting the 20 1.8 or the 24mm but they are expensive...after this i think i will get this 24 2.8 :) ...THANKS!!!
Love the design of these lenses.
This is a slam-dunk move by Sony. A bit of a nod to "mirrorless is small" days.
Interesting video Ted, pls do a follow up especially on the 24:) I have been using samy 24 as 24 1.4gm is out of reach. Hope this new 24 brings solid option.
I'm looking forward for that 40mm, it will me my next lens
How good are the 24mm lens for landscape photography for high resolution cameras when you want to print very large pro quality prints ? I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, but I also want a more compact and lightweight 24mm lens.
Hey Ted, love your videos! Were you ever to restart the artist series could you please talk about Sebastiao Salgado? I absolutely love his work in Genesis!
Thank you. I like your less speedy comments.
I hope Sony releases more compact lenses in 2024. I just picked up the A7C R and I love it with 24mm G 2.8. I am considering picking up the 50mm G 2.5 but want to wait to see if Sony can release a new compact with f1.8 or f2 aperture in the same size.
8:53 Cask Strength Kaiyo Whisky - Nice
I want to know how the 24 compare with the 28 f2, which is also small
Like the compact size but not a pancake, a cup cake instead. Perfect for travel. Now I just need to get the a7c and these lenses.
0:44 :D Pretty cool!
I love this.
Last year I considered picking up one of those "nifty fifty" lenses but I couldn't get over the build quality and lack of features. This looks like it's a better balance of cost/features/size for me personally. It's obviously a good choice for street photography but what do you think about food photography?
this really blur the advantages of M4/3. Great review as always
Hi Ted, I have a very silly question for you. I have the 40mm lens and love it very much, particularly how sharp it is. I have it paired with my A7RV and love all the detail it can capture. But there is a part of me that wonders is the 35 mm GM significantly sharper? I know that is both bright brighter and has fewer optical flaws, but is it also significantly sharper? Sharpness is my number one priority. Appreciate any and all detailed feedback you might be able to give. Regardless, thank you for your incredible content.
Hi Ted, I would like to see environmental portraits with these lenses if possible. Thank you...
Great review but I still think that you can't beat the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 for a compact and sharp sharp sharp lens
Just got the Sony 40mm for my A7R IV I almost feel like I'm carrying my M50 with the 32mm 1.4 it fits in a my coat pocket although the zipper might scratch it. The sharpness is really surprising given the price difference to my Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Distortion is a bit nasty for buildings even with keystone correction in Capture One that's the trade off for size and price I'm really happy with it though.
The 700€ price is reasonable as long as these lenses have very good optical quality and great autofocus performance.
The introductory price of the small full frame Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 T* ZA Sonnar in 2013 was similar.
These three lenses suit perfectly with the small Sony a7C.
Especially the 24mm f/2.8 which has a very convenient angle of view for travel photography, without serious perspective distortion. Ideal for landscape or even full body portrait photography.
The full frame e-mount 50mm focal length is very popular by photographers and Sony now covers every possible need of a full frame 50mm e-mount lenses.
_The very expensive 50mm f/1.2 G for extremely shallow depth of field.
_The less expensive Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 for very shallow depth of field.
_The extremely sharp Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 which isn't very expensive and I believe belongs to the 50mm full frame family.
_The very affordable 50mm f/1.8
_The macro 50mm f/2.8 which is very sharp too.
_The recent very small, close to the pancake size 50mm f/2.8.
Sony has such an impressive variety of 50mm full frame lenses designed for its mirrorless cameras. Canon and Nikon will need at least five years to offer a similar variety of full frame 50mm lenses designed to their mirrorless cameras.
However I have to admit that the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct which I believe belongs to the full frame 50mm family of lenses, is a very impressive unparalleled achievement.
Thanks for breaking down the 50mm product line, I just got a a7iii and I got the kit lens and a 85mm 1.8 prime and I was thinking of which 50’mm to get.
@@abeldaking You should pair that 85 with 35 F1.8 and only then thinking about 50, if you think you need something in between. Saying that, I have 50 F1.4 ZA and 24 F1.4 GM. No 35 and no 85. Planning on getting 135 GM.
@@gkoricic I think I’m going to get the 1.4 24MM GM next and then a telephoto down the line
@@abeldaking Well, you can't go wrong with 24GM. Still loving it after more then a year. And it can be used as 36 mm in crop mode with the same (really identical) rendering as RX1's 35 mm Sonnar.
I hope they make a compact 18mm as well
Nice lens sir..I like it
Would love to see a comparison of the 40 with the Zeiss 35 f/2.8
This
The 40mm F2.5 G is sharper wide open and more feature packed. Overall I would say it is better. The 35mm F2.8 ZA is a pretty good compact prime, especially considering that it is from 2014. If new to the market I would probably go for the 40mm. I own it and absolutely love it. 40mm is very useful for a variety applications
i don t know why, but everyone seems to have forgot about the zeiss loxia lenses that makes the a7c very compelling. manual focus only (ok to me), apperture ring ( declickable) small f2.....
the info is really scarse for these as they seeem to have been long forgotten even if stellar... please a vid on hem one day?
Waiting for 1.4 ZA vs GM 50mm comparison.
Looking forward to the upcoming 85mm f3.5 g lens.
Not my bag - but interesting. Personally, my primes are the 35mm F1.8, 55mm F1.8 and 90mm F1.8 - they are all small enough for me. For anything around a 2.8/2.5 I just lean to a zoom - yeah I am probably trading off some performance and some focus breathing... but isn't photography an Art of teaching you that everything is a compromise anyway :)
I’d like to purpose calling them “Cup cake”🧁 lens. 😆
"And they're actually very affordable." Cries in Brazilian Reais.
Think I’ll put the money down on the 50mm f1.2 GM.....😍
Given their price point, these three lenses should be must haves in any Sony shooter's kit. Considering there are zooms and other primes that cost more than these three lenses put together, it's a big incentive to buy these primes to use as someone's main pieces of kit.
For the price of the 3 just buy the sigma 24-70
When you review the 40mm, can you compare it with the Canon 40mm f/2.8? It is a favorite of mine.
I'd rather adapt the Canon 40 for photo. For video, I'd get something else.
At last three affordable lenses from Sony they're not fast but they're fast enough 2.5 2.5 and 2.8 excellent lenses finally they're thinking about our pocketbooks and they look to be good however Nikon has been doing this with absolutely phenomenal lenses no chromatic aberrations sharp in every way and they've been looking at our pocketbooks for a long time. However keep up the good work Sony
The sony-crons are perfect for street photography
I still use many small Pentax primes and was wondering when somebody would produce something similar. They look great but wouldn't 35mm be a better focal length between the 24 and 50?
There is already a Sony 35mm f 2.8.
@@thomasmbr In this case, why a 40mm at all? They could keep producing only the new one.
I've been using the awesome G 16-55 on my A6600 but its too damn heavy and bulky. I've been looking for a compact option. Which one you you think would be best for APC-C setup?
If A6600 with G16-55 is big and bulky for you, maybe compact camera or mobile phone is for you, not interchangeable lenses cameras system.
@@mralexlex I've been shooting mirrorless since theA6000 debut. The Sony G16-55 F2.8 lens might be the largest lens they make dedicated to APS-C
I don't think it's for me, but I'm also not the target audience. Looks like an awesome option for people who just want to share vacation photos but have better than cell
I am selling my Nikon z and moving to Sony. This is the solution I was looking for,
So then it won’t have weird vignettes like my 24mm Samyang/Rokinon ?? Sweet! 😁
I'm a weirdo, but I really wish they could make a 28-50mm f2.8(ish) that was about these sizes. Love this form factor, features, and functionality!
You got your wish! Sony just released the 24-50 f2.8
@@steelshaper Looks pretty interesting! Thanks for the heads up, looking forward to checking it out! I've been using a sigma 18-50 apsc lens for my travels, but it would be nice to get the full frame glass... 🤔
@@JGcd001 that's a great lens as well and a great compact option if you're using APSC
Omg these look like what I've been waiting for to go mirrorless.
Do hope they launch an 85/105/135 set to complement these
Reminds me of the Sigma I-series. (…) wonder how they compete? Or how the 50mm 2.5 compares to the 25mm 1.4 Panaleica.
Chromatic aberration is what hobbyists and pixel counters are obsessed with. Just make a great photograph and it will not matter.
💯
I really don’t understand. I feel like the 35mm 1.8 does want all of these can with a couple of steps and it’s small and an absolute video beast.
Why don’t they make us small telephotos? Imagine updating the 90mm to a 105 2.8 G Macro OSS
Looks like they are coming after Fuji
Someone that can actually take photograph 👍
DP Review are probably the most guilty of some really lacklustre photos.
@@joeymccallion ha ha - feel bad saying it but your right. Most of these review channels take really ordinary images.
Did you see something better than mediocre? Really?
Maybe there's some people out there that are going to wanna know how the 35 2.8 ZA compares to the 40 2.5. Apart from difference in focal length, I'm interested in the rendering differences between the two lenses. I primarily use the 35 2.8 for street/EDC on a A7rii. I'm looking for a more modern solution with better micro contrast for capturing street scenes. I'm managing to get pop out of the 35, but it's a lot of post production to the point I made a base preset just to get it where my Q2 was out of camera (The rendering from the Q2 is a drug I can't shake, but I use Sony). Thoughts, findings?
Did u got an answer? I am in the same situation!
@@jordivila5207 Nada. My best solution is a Batis 25, but it’s on the bulbous side. I really wish that compact 2.8ZA actually rendered like a Zeiss.
@@NickNightingaleYT Same! A new 35 mm !!
Finally! - someone taking a punt at the - and I blame Canon - at the madness. These look lovely.
24/40 too close?
i dont understand why sony doesnt have a decent pancake lens yet T_T
Prob be a huge trade off of distortion.
Hahaha call them what they are, “Japanese pancake lenses.” 😋
To be honost, i think they are a bot pricy for a hobbyists here €600-700.. which is too expensive in my opinion, but sure when you look as were Canon comes with a 16mm f2.8 for just €350… which is more for a hobbyist these 2.8’s are still rather expensive, well most Sony lenses are….
Common, go with the true brand pentax..
600$ for 2.5 aperture lenses...I don't get it. The rf has a 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, and 85mm 2.0 that are all small. They all come out to the same price too. This is nothing to be excited over.
For APS-C when you have sigma 1.4 lenses for cheaper? No thanks.
Anyone actually got the 40 and is using it.
nice objects, but affordable???nifty50s used to go for $100 with 1.8aperture...
With multiple aspheric elements and linear autofocus motors?
No, you're right on that, but I find it overpriced anyway, although I know sony lenses pricing policy...
Cupcake lenses rather than pancake?
those are ultra compact? remember when 35mm film lenses were actually small and compact? Thinking of Pentax f/1.4-f/2 lenses. I'd much rather use my truly compact f/2 Fujifilm primes.
People have rejected big clunky FF lenses. There’s a whole movement to smaller lenses. A collection of Sony mount Voigtländer lanther lenses far out pace anything else you can buy. Dumping autofocus is the trend. No ones taking those big autofocus primes down and UP the bright angle trail in Grand Canyon or anywhere else. Now Sony and Sigma are finally making some small autofocus FF lenses to get on board the trend. Leica M lenses are selling like hot cakes and being used exclusively by many on their mirrorless cameras, Zeiss, Voigtländer, and Leica M lenses on mirrorless has taken off....big clunky primes and gigantic zooms are out....and frankly can’t match M glass from any of these big three for image quality.
I mean, I like the size, buttttttt.
I’d have loved to seen a small lens with faster apertures, and sacrificed all the doodads to hit the same price point.
Not only can I not see the point of this announcement it actually disappoints me and makes me angry. Yes I care about chrome aberrations that is why I dont own many Sony lenses as the Zeiss are particularly poor but, what I do have is a complete range of excellent f2.8 compact primes. These new Sony primes are as needed as a rain shower during a flood. What we need is better corrected f1.8 primes (I would settle for f2). These are almost a pastiche of the new Sigma collection; even look like them. For most of my needs I can find several excellent compact f2.8 (offerings from Samyang,I have the 24mm/2.8 and 45mm/1.8, and Sigma are excellent), what I cant find is a decent f1.8 weatherproof Sony compact standard lens (they allneed turning downto f2.8 to minimise colour so what is the point) so, I have given up, dumped Sony (I will keep my kit for leisure purposes as its very portable), bought a Nikon D780 and gone back to Nikon to use my classic Nikkors for serious photography. I did expect better from Sony when I switched from Nikon.
599 Dollar is too much for f 2,4 and f2,5 at 40/50mm. f1,8 or 2,0 would be better for the bokeh.
I think this defeats the point. They’re not going for bokeh. They’re going for compact.
