Sunak vows to end UK ‘sick note culture’ with benefit reform

  • Rishi Sunak has set out plans to tackle what he calls Britain's "sick note culture" and a spiralling welfare bill the country can't afford.
    One in ten working-age adults are now claiming a health-related benefit, according to new figures.
    Many have mental health conditions - many are young.
    One charity says the proposals could leave some disabled people destitute

      Have you ever had a sleep study done? This could be sleep apnea and a cpap machine could change your life! Your GP can arrange a sleep study for you it’s an overnight stay. Otherwise things like adhd can cause temporary narcolepsy too. I had it for years and didn’t know what it was and just thought I was lazy or it’s depression etc as doctors had run bloods and everything was “normal”. Late diagnosed at 33 with adhd and have learned so much about it. Basically if you’re under stress or bored your brain just powers down like a computer 😂 don’t give up pushing for an answer! GP’s are useless these days.

      It's only idiots and people that have never had to claim benefits that think it's some kind of lifestyle choice. This idiot probably spends more on one day's lunch than people on benefits spend on a week's worth of shopping. Unless you're also a criminal or someone having lots of kids to try and milk the system, being on benefits isn't living, it's surviving.
      It's an old tactic from governments, just blame the poor and worst off in the country for the problems, now it's the turn of the sick and disabled.

    I was a carer for over thirty years for a disabled parent and it practically killed me. I am still suffering the mental and physical effects of those years and I also found out that I have Asperger's Syndrome which means that it was a miracle that I got through it all at all. I would be one of the first that the DWP rules would target because I cared all the decades that the Tories didn't and it practically finished me off. I have sheaves of notes from a clinical psychologist saying that I shouldn't be in a workplace for my mental and physical health's sake but I suspect that Sunak would have the DWP ignore them. What he wants is for me is a denial of existence, any hope of recuperation and an early grave instead. That is his 'perfect' Britain. The last 'holiday' I had was a day trip to Felixstowe in 1976!!!! Previous to that, a weekend in Doncaster to see relatives!!!! It must be one long holiday to have all those resources, SUNAK!

      It is not as simple as that. It is hard-working taxpayers money that goes to pay benefits. The ‘government’ has no money, except what it takes from taxes. I was a carer too, so I sympathise. I am in a more difficult financial situation because of that, but I have worked in spite of extreme pressures and it can be done. Of course there are exceptions, I don’t doubt that. But I do believe that a lot of the benefit system is abused and exploited by people who expect others to keep them. In my entire life I have had £4 total off the government!

You really would not rather I be on the road with you, that I promise! Further to the comorbidities is that the executive functioning of the brain tends to be greatly diminished due to the hormonal imbalance between cortisol and adrenalin and dopamine. The latter gets eaten up so that you are on a dopamine drip feed whilst the chronic surges of cortisol and adrenalin start to eat your muscles and organs up - literally - It's like living life constantly on a flat battery and thinking straight and coordinating the day constantly falls off the map. An employer would not want someone like that in their employ, would not want to adjust the work conditions, get annoyed and frustrated - which would make me far, far worse! - and end up giving me the boot and saying good riddance. That is the reality for many who are autistic, especially who have been through it and past middle age. Politicians don't want to hear the truth. The suicide rate amongst the autistic community proportionately far outweighs that of the neurotypical population, simply through chronic stress at trying to interrelate with what is expected of them by the neurotypical society.

    Classic Tory shaming. I remember the 80's when the Tories came out with "Single mums are a drain on society" and many of the people of the UK, rather disgracefully, seemed to agree. Totally ignoring the fact that sooooo many single mums are that because men deserted them. Or because their spouse had died and left them widowed. So easy for the establishment/politicians to come up with ways of scapegoating their own failures.
    The country is a mess. I could've told them that 'tax cuts' may be what wealthy people want but that other things have a priority too.

    It made me feel truly disgusted the fact he's announcing these cruel measures with the words 'Social justice' ironically plastered behind him. The Tories have had 14 years to fix the country, but instead used the opportunity to create an ever widening gulf between the rich and poor. They have hit society from every possible angle and utterly decimated systems that were there to protect the vulnerable. Rolling back reforms and safety nets to the Victorian era which they seem so fond of recreating, where low paid workers had little protection from wealthy businessman, life expectancy was low, and poverty became a trap. Their ethos is cruel, arrogant and devoid of any iota of empathy for those unfortunate to not be born into a privileged life. The only good thing about Sunak's latest plans to kick people when they're down is his advisors are totally oblivious to just how despicable they make this government sound, and seem determined to treat most of the country and it's citizens with contempt. Surely there is some way to force a general election before they can do any further damage and take us all to the point of utter societal breakdown.

    Another thing, PM saying "work pays" but it doesn't. Many people face terrible working conditions, very long hours, no work/life balance, bullying from superiors, and all for a pittance that doesn't even cover living costs! As a result, millions are on universal credit just to top up what employers keep insisting they won't pay. Over 60% of the benefits bill is spent on the state pension. Then a much smaller amount makes up disability benefit. The massive increases in unemployment are due to a national crisis entirely of the Tories own making. Extremely punitive austerity cuts to all public services for 14 long miserable years. Billions squandered on Nightingale hospitals during Covid that were never used. Billions more squandered on HS2 financial mismanagement. But they still blame and punish those who not surprisingly can't cope with it all anymore. The crisis in people's health is the result of a broken society. One where healthcare, food, warmth, sanitation, and dignity are now seeming to look like luxuries more and more can no longer afford. These things are human rights! Take them away, and broken Britain is what you're left with. There isn't truly an epidemic of illness. There is an epidemic of extremely pernicious attitudes from the bigots running the country, that is sickening people to the soul. If people were treated with respect and dignity, and actually PAID for work they do, almost none of these problems would exist.

NHS on its last legs , junior Doctors on strike , GPs leaving on mass for pastures new .. where they get the respect they deserve with no sign of any new ones to replace them . What about the millions of fit young boat men sitting in 5 star Hotels . recent empited OAP homes , gated complexes etc etc all getting paid for nothing??? Plenty of rubish to pick up on the Motorway and central res , Lots of plastic on beaches, rivers and parks to be cleared . put them to work , paying tax . finding somewhere to live and to see how hard it is to live here , they might earn enough money to buy a boat from home office to go home on

    The Government ALWAYS seem to latch onto this as a problem. Disability is NOT a lifestyle choice. It's often a byproduct of working oneself into an early grave anyway. The disabled are an easy target that has been latched onto by successive regimes. We're marginalised from Society anyway so our voices are weak and further weakened by this sort of attitude. Disability can happen to anyone at any time during their working life. It's horrific to think that we're going to be facing further iterations of poorly trained, poorly qualified people who have quotas to fill in terms of slashing costs. This has been tried before and always ends up costing more money than it saves. Idiotic and facile approach to solving a perceived problem that is not going to be reflective of an often complex reality.

      You'd think with the failing NHS, we'd have less pensioners, and considering they're the ones taking a majority chunk of the benefits bill home, it would make sense if that was part of the plan. Except they went and defied the odds, probably because they lived through at least one war. So now it's onto the disabled, stuck in inaccessible housing with significant care needs they can't afford to have met by thieving local authorities hiring illiterate and incompetent social workers who spend their days chatting on Teams instead of doing any actual work. I'd love to be well enough to work, to have a reason to get up at all let alone in the morning, but I can't even wash my own hair or get into my own garden, so I guess that means I should work from home because that will definitely make me feel better.

      I don’t think people like to confront the fact that disability is relatively common and this could be them at any moment, given a bit of bad luck. If people were rational, they’d be worrying more about what life looks like for them or their kids in the worst case.

      Looks at the absolute shambles ATOS Healthcare was. A French, "Preferred contactor" who caused needless suffering to millions. They cost the Government MORE money than they were paying out in PIP anyway. Is this just another case of jobs for our mates again? The disabled can suffer it. They're good at suffering after all... Tory scumbags. Even Ian Duncan Smith quit last time as it was too much for him to bear.

  • @steveHolloway88
    @steveHolloway88 Před měsícem +4

    I used to work for the money advice service, I think a lot of people assume that people claiming disability benefits/pip are scroungers and they're not. Those are the hardest benefits to get and the process when you apply is very, very intrusive and most of the time they actually say no to people. Most people with mental health problems are still on UC but are marked as having limited capacity for work with work related activity meaning that they still have to work with their work coach to prepare themselves for work. Very rarely is a claimant marked as limited capability for work and work related activity. So they're not paid mass amounts of money every month like the general public seems to think that they are. They get £360 to live on for the month which isn't physically possible. I think it's disgraceful that the government is going after people with mental health problems and disabilities instead of stopping migrants and immigrants flooding into the country and going straight into the benefit system. They're the reason why the benefit system is a mess. Not disabled people.

    • @FBI_Agent_69420
      @FBI_Agent_69420 Před měsícem +1

      £360 a month on top of housing benefit, UC itself, and then disability benefits come separately - ultimately amounting to just a bit under minimum wage. And then there's reductions to council tax, helping to keep the bills affordable. They're not living on £360 a month and I know that you know that, but for the benefit of anyone else reading your comment, you forgot to mention the other ~£700. This is the internet, you can't leave things to the imagination, half of the people reading your comment won't bother looking any further into it before they start making important decisions.

    • @vicki8210
      @vicki8210 Před měsícem

      FBI agent- . You cannot get a council tax reduction unless you’re severely mentally unwell, which is very hard to prove. Plus you cannot get council tax reduction for physical disabilities. The extra £700 in benefits is extremely hard to get and you have to go through brutal assessments which most people fail. You make its sound like the system is so easy, but it’s not.

    • @FBI_Agent_69420
      @FBI_Agent_69420 Před měsícem

      @@vicki8210 if you get lower-rate PIP then you are eligible for reductions, and the brutal assessment is literally just a form where you have to score retard points for things like being unable to cook your own meals, unable to wash, etc. You just need to fill it correctly so that you get enough points to lose the game, you can ask Citizens Advice or some similar organisation to help you with that. What most people do is just fill in the form as if they're filling in their Twitter bio (i.e. they just whine like an angsty teenager), and of course that gets them nowhere because life isn't the internet, so then they do the only thing they know how - they take to the internet and start whining about it lol... which then gets picked up by journalists, activists, and other such grifters who make fat stacks convincing people that the benefits system is a lot tougher than it really is.

    The irony is that Personal Independence Payment is paid regardless of whether someone has the ability to work. It is based on whether someone can travel, mobilise and do daily tasks, irrespective of work. Although I'm not sure how the government can expect people who cannot cook, shower, use the toilet or travel themselves, to be able to work (as those are some of the criteria required to receive disability benefit).
