I will add that as a family that's *seemingly* doing fine (we don't have a mortgage and live in a very friendly rent from FIL) we're not fine. While we can cover all the new costs we do have it means we're basically not saving that much if any for our future living. So yes, while we have no debt, every shopping trip is 1/3 (or more) more expensive and we're just hoping things will settle so we can resume saving like we'd love to ...

Hey Ashley, I live in Tasmania, Australia and I am 150000% with you. My husband has a good wage and I work part time, but even still we are FEELING the pinch. I'm trying not to buy anything that isn't necessary and we're really just knuckling down and trying to pay off as much of our mortgage as possible (because our interest rate went from 2.5% - 5.96% within a year - SPICY! At the same time I went on mat leave, too...)
No holidays in sight for us for a while, but we're still enjoying life in this season.
TBH I do feel a bit triggered when I see influencers on their third international trip of the year while I'm just trying to pay for the basics. I've started unfollowing for my mental health.

You’re not alone. Here in England the prices of food etc have gone up so much, before the inflation we were living comfortably on a mostly single income household (I work a couple evenings a week but my wages go on kids stuff). But now we’re feeling the pinch and having to weigh up costs, talking about dropping subscriptions and me picking up more hours at work after I come off maternity etc. You’re 100% not alone, and it’s been refreshing to hear someone who to me is an influencer talk about this topic

  • @MrsTurner

We’re in Illinois, butter is $4 per lb while buying store brand.
My husband makes a decent wage and before the last few years it was enough to make a serious dent in our debt.
We’re now paying nearly $50 more per grocery trip after switching to non-organic foods, and not paying down debt at a good pace. It costs $50 to fill up a tank of gas on a 15 gallon tank. I’m really ready for whatever break is coming and I’m a bit scared about food when it does. I’m learning about plants and gardening so we know what we can eat when the next depression happens.
    How I’m combating it-
We buy meat in bulk directly from the butcher so that’s a hefty price tag all together but we have a freezer of meat so we at least don’t have to buy that at the store.
We get our milk for trade since my husband milks one day a week for the local dairy.
We have chickens so we don’t need to buy eggs. $12 bag of feed a month and they eat food scraps so we have less waste when the kids don’t finish their food!
Avoiding convenience foods as much as possible. We hardly eat out/order takeout, and I cook from scratch most of the time.

The economic state of the world has been a huge stressor on us as well. I stay home with our baby and my husband has a good job, but it’s tough to see so much more money leave our accounts. Our grocery bill has doubled, our electricity and water is more expensive, and my husbands company cut bonuses which was effectively a 20% pay decrease because he used to get large bonuses. We’re in Austin, TX so we also felt an extreme shift in housing costs. We paid off a lot of student loans during the pandemic, but those also start back up on payments in the next few months so it’s going to be even more stressful.

My ILs are all going to Hawaii this summer but we turned down going bc between having 2 kids, the prices of groceries and housing costs here we would have zero savings if we went which isn't a situation we feel comfortable putting ourselves in, especially with kids. So we just make all our meals at home, do free activities when going out (parks, walks, the library) and funneling extra $$ to savings for when shit eventually hits the fan big time and a full blown recession hits.

What I’ve learned recently is that the answer to “how can they afford to live like that and I can’t?” is ALWAYS credit card debt. Like, massive debt. I didn’t know how normalized it was for people to put a multi-thousand dollar vacation or new car entirely on a credit card and just pretend like they don’t have to pay it back. It's very eye opening, I think A LOT of people are using debt to look like they have it all together and because they want that lifestyle. It's actually shocking the amount of money people waste and the crazy debt they're in. I'm talking $20-100k in credit card debt plus student loans, car payment etc..
Anyway my point is, yes we are feeling it! Some people just aren't as smart with finances and can make us frugal people feel like we are lacking. Try not to compare yourself!

It’s so scary how everything is so expensive. I’m worried every month how we will make it.

I live in Michigan (directly north of Ohio), and prices are high here too! We are a one income family of three but will have 2 incomes again in September. We were going to take a trip and book the flights on points, but we weren’t able to use points. We cancelled the trip. If we wanted to completely drain our savings and stop contributing to them we could go on a trip or 2 but we also want to buy a house and pay off our student loans. It’s hard not to compare our lives to influencers’ lives and be a little envious of the ability to spend lavishly right now.

it's interesting, because I talk to many people of varying incomes and family compositions, and everyone is saying that things are tight and budgeting is getting harder. And I think to myself, how is my family with one income and 2 kids, struggling the same as a 2 income family with no kids?
I think one big issue is that social media allows us to see families that may not struggle as much and don't mention finances, and pressures us to match that lifestyle. I also think there's a pressure to live in a way similar to before the inflation. I know I feel like things are tight for my family at times, but I know another young family who are envious of me and how "well off" we are doing. Yes there are higher costs and yes it is harder to budget, but I think it feels as bad as it is because of our perspective and the things we feel we should be able to have.
Obviously for those who are really struggling to put any food on the table and make payments, this doesn't apply, but it's just my 2 cents (now inflated to 5 cents)

In Europe is the same. Everything is very expensive right now. Today i had this thought: nothing is cheap these days. Literally nothing! And i think this is a problem. I am grateful i can afford all this circus, but i wonder other people what they do? Very sad times we live. You are not alone.

Everything is expensive in the US, too. Even in Texas, where things have always been less expensive. It’s definitely not the same as it was growing up in the state.

  • @katherinesingleton2133

Our daycare told us that their prices are going to increase 15% in the fall. I have 2 kids there and it's currently costing half my paycheck. I don't know where an extra 100 a week is going to come from. I'm trying not to think about it. I work for a university that gives an annual cost of living raise which is...not anywhere close to 15%.

Thank you for talking about this. I see a lot of american influencers/sahm who travels all the time and are upgrading their houses ect. And I’m like - how much do they really earn from social media? 🤔 Meanwhile we can definitely feel the inflation but get by but traveling and buying new things for the house is not a priority right now. 😅

We are definitely struggling with grocery bills. I live in Mississippi. Our butter used to be 2.50 a pound but now it is 6 a pound. Crazy. We use a ton of butter. We don't use credit cards. Single income. Not spending money because truthfully anything that doesn't go to bills goes for food and a small bit to savings.

I think living in such an expensive place makes it a lot harder. I left Toronto because of prices, for Berlin (Germany) where I live in a 2 BR in the city center for under 800EUR and pay 80cents for a carton of milk and have free daycare. That being said, our day to day costs are super low and therefore, we can afford to travel. North America feels so dystopian to me now.

We are definitely not okay. Not broke, but feeling the pinch. I stopped buying organic; as a matter of fact I don’t give a shit about organic anymore. We buy all sale and basic brand items. We just buy essentials. We are on the East Coast of Canada in a province called Nova Scotia, and a carbon tax just came into play and it will now cost us on average around $80 to fill our gas tank. I remember when it was only $40. Everything is adding up and I hate it with a passion.

I keep refraining myself to comment, cuz it's a bit weird... but the thing you said about how much milk there is in a latte, I swear, everytime I watch your videos it's like you're walking into my brain and speaking from my thoughts... I'm so baffled of how similar our thinking is. Plus we look alike.. my 5 year old daughter reffers to you as 'the mommy that looks like you, mommy' 😂 Seriously, and the butter price hits the hardest on me also. In general, everything seems so expensive since last year. I'm paying double at the supermarket on the same stuff. I'm from Europe, by the way.

Yes, life is really expensive right now. We had to travel for a wedding a couple months ago and it set us back so far in our budget. We are just now getting sort of back on track. I would love to just bury my head in the sand and not look at my statements but I can’t. I’m also feeling so much existential dread about the environment. All the wildfire smoke legitimately gets to me. It’s just the earth’s way of telling us climate change can’t be ignored. Not a fan.
