- A VAR enhanced look at 10 Rangers games this season that may have been changed for better or worse by VAR. This video is not intended as criticism of Referees, without them there is no game, instead it intends to make a point of how difficult their job is, especially in such a football passionate country and why the game and the Referees themselves would benefit from the introduction of VAR.
Opinions are all my own and of course seen through Blue tinted glasses, however I have tried to be as balanced as possible on this one.
All footage taken from RTV and more so than usual the Inside Ibrox series, whose production and team behind it I cannot praise enough. - Sport
In the last game against Motherwell , what annoyed me most was that Woolery committed 3 stonewall yellow card offences ( 2 in the 1st half) and yet never received one card, but went on to set up their first goal and score their equaliser.
Aye there was a second half challenge on the halfway line on Kent (I think) in particular that saw a fair bit of leniency it must be said.
A really good honest video i doubt a Celtic fan would do the same with their games with some of the decisions that have went their way recently

A very fair treatment of 10 incidents. Rangers have benefited and lost out from bad decisions. But the decisions against Rangers have been the more significant. Quite a few points have been lost as a result.
In fairness Rangers should have more than enough quality to have our games to bed and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.. bombarding teams and not taking chances then we drop points and blame the ref.. the team must take responsibility for the shite they have been producing domestically
Something I noted putting this together is that the refs performances by human nature suffer when the pressure really ranks up towards the end of the season when their decisions are more important and I can't see anything other than VAR changing that.
Can't disagree Craig, alright there have been some game changing moments swung by refereeing decisions but the blame for failing to kill teams off before these moments lies with the team.
Excuse me! If the refs hadn't awarded Rangers biased decisions and Aberdeen had won both of their games against Rangers this season, they would be sat up in 4th. But instead they're stuck down in 10th!
That's WAY more consequential than anything Rangers have had this season!

Can we take a second to talk about the fact that in the games this past season where we did have VAR, rangers were able to actually play the game properly and not have to fight for any decision to go in our favour, whether it should be or not. If it was for decisions being made correctly when it counted as these clips proved, we probably would have won the league this year as well as the cup.

Could well have been man, it looks really close. VAR it and we know one way or the other.
I think the old firm will lose the most decisions if VAR is introduced. The standard of refereeing in general is garbage across the board though. Very poor.

Great video. Shines a real light on how bad the referees are and how a very significant amount of big calls have wrongly went against Rangers.
I have to acknowledge Refs have the toughest job out there man, if you ask me do I think plain black and white if all decisions were called spot on by the refs would Rangers be better off I'd say yeah.
But the pressure on psychology on those moments without VAR is nuts and plays a factor for and against us, for example, whether it was or wasn't a Penalty today I don't think Madden under normal circumstances would give that one if he didn't know he got it wrong at Tannadice in a similar incident.

But it feels like today aside Madden and Beaton in particular are genuinely petrified to give any big decision to Rangers all because some moon howlers say they are die hard Rangers fans. I mean Beaton had to have police protection because of death threats for heaven's sake. There comes a point when the guy must think I want an easier life and you can't referee games if you have that mindset.
What about all the fortunate penalties , offside goals, red card tackles and other decisions that have went for Rangers this season and many seasons before?? You used to call Celtic paranoid...Rangers fans are now not only paranoid but deluded as well

VAR is needed to help referees but it is also needed to keep them HONEST. It’s no coincidence so many decisions have went against rangers since Celtics chairperson states “ refereeing decisions are an ongoing concern”. Veiled threat. If we had VAR we would be streets ahead at the moment. They say it evens out so I’ll be expecting some outrageous “luck” during the run in

On the Aberdeen game, you only showed a brief clip of Johnny Hayes blatant elbow on Barasic,clear sending off, not that it would have affected the game, still a big call went unpunished

Aye I don’t disagree Hayes should have been off Paul but I’m not 100 percent that VAR would have looked at it, felt like it was worth showing but tried to focus the discussion on incidents, from that game in particular since there were so many, that I was sure VAR would have been involved in.

And Morelos' handball at Pittodrie was ABSOLUTELY a penalty! That Dundee Utd handball was less of a penalty than that. At least the guy tried to move out the way of the ball.

He never says he’s not a Rangers fan. Morelos ironically try’s to make his body smaller which in turn leads to the hand ball. Just because a handball is more of a handball than another doesn’t mean it’s not a handball. The Dundee United two are both penalties. The Aberdeen one for Rangers isn’t a penalty. I don’t see why everyone can’t just agree on it without claiming conspiracy🤦♂️
The Refereeing in Scotland was absolutely corrupt against Rangers. In Europe we had a level playing field and we reached the Europa cu final. Celtic in Europe flop without the greatest assets in the Scottish game. Scottish Referees.
Doesn't matter what team you support, everyone can clearly see the referees can't do there job properly and they need VAR. But even then, var can only show them it again, if its the same refs that are using it then there will continue to be problems for all teams. VAR and NEW full time referees would be brilliant🙏🙏🙏🙏 and when VAR does eventually come, the gap between the old firm and the rest will only get bigger because shirt pulling and hacking is all they have.
Sam its an interesting point that in all honesty had me against VAR until this season, in Scotland the eyes naturally do tend to see what they want to based on allegiance and the likes of Andy Walker for example continually look at replays on SKY and see the exact opposite of what a Rangers fan would see depending on who benefits from the decision. What to do about that issue I've really no idea, I don't think for one minute VAR will fix everything for that reason but it will help.
Moved to AUS years ago. We have it here you definitely… definitely don’t want it. You listen to that VAR gets as much wrong as it gets right. So there’s massive doubt where the Var would agree.

Can you imagine VAR official is Beaton, referee Madden 4th official Dallas debating last minute penalty against The Rangers? Decision penalty for The Rangers hahaha. SFA need full-time officials, who come out after game and explain decisions, and also declare the team the grew up supporting. Also why always West Scotland referees? Get it shared across country. How can a Glasgow referee do The Rangers v Aberdeen? Can you imagine an Aberdeen referee doing Aberdeen v The Rangers?

I respect the efforts to try look at decisions that wrongly went for Rangers, but still very selective for example in the Hibs game, Lundstrum put in an equally dangerous challenge in the opening minutes which you have not discussed. You also ignore the fact that Mclaughlin could well have been sent off in a narrow win vs Dundee, and Robbie Neilson felt Rangers should have had at least one red card in the tight 1-1 at Ibrox. This is the problem, every team in Scotland could point to decisions that went against them. And unless you analyze every decision in the game, then it will never be conclusive.
You are also selective with your diagnoses. The Dundee United one seemed no more or less a penalty that the Morelos one at Aberdeen. I thought they were both very similar.
Do the decisions even out over the course of the season? I tend to think not, and it is difficult to compare decisions in different games. For example getting a soft penalty when you are 3-0 up is not worth as much as one a 0-0.
But have the decisions changed the outcome of the title? I am not convinced. I think it is easy to look at one or two refereeing decisions in a 90 minute match, instead of the 40-50 decisions players and manager make over the course of a game. Yes Rangers may have beaten Dundee United with VAR (no certainty that they score the penalty), but I'd say the poor finishing and poor defending is a bigger factor. Yes Celtic would have possibly beaten Hearts in game 1 had the Abada goal been allowed, but Celtic also missed two good chances in the dying moments, and conceded a soft goal.
For every 1 or 2 decisions that go against you in a game, you tend to find 3 or 4 times when one of your own players made a critical mistake.

I think your analysis is as objective as a fan video can get, and BTW regardless of my disagreements you have certainly put in a power of work and editing which makes it look very good!
I take your point RE if it comes down to a point or GD, but in that scenario I'd place more blame on GG's penalty miss vs Livingston, or Mcgregor's mistake in the dying seconds at Ross County. Those are just two examples of many many more.
I want VAR because it will take some pressure off the officials, but I'm not sure it would change the outcome of the league this year.

I have to say I liked the spirit he let games be played in, kept his cards in his pocket when possible and let plenty tackles go other refs would stop the game for making a Madden game sometimes feel like a throwback or a scene from Mean Machine. Infuriating when he lets stonewall penalties go but as he was prone to though.
Madden plus VAR would have been ideal for that reason.

There may be a case for other Scottish sides currently suffering some collateral damage facing the Old Firm due to outside pressures but folk aren't getting death threats and having their adresses, kids schools etc posted online for getting a decision wrong in St Johnstone vs Ross County yet they still make mistakes, the refs just need help.

Ben I'll fully admit at the start of the season I was dead against VAR, but the way its been going and its effective use in the Europa League has really changed my mind, surely you'd trade Rangers being top of the league for Bobby Madden taking a minute or 2 to make the right call at Tannadice?
I'm a firm believer in outside pressures influencing split second decisions from the refs, when a number of them have had death threats after a perceived wrong call how could it not? But allow them to see it again and I think they would get far more right than they do now.
