I REALLY like MGS1! And in a way, you are right. But, I still think that MGS4 and V had better gameplay, that aged better than MGS1, considering the time they came out.
In 1998 MGS1 had good gameplay. Now of course when you compare it to MGS 4 or V in terms of gameplay, it can't compare. And yea, that might not be a fair comparison, but we ARE comparing things here so we're already passed that point (before anyone tries to bring that up, lol.) Nostalgia still makes me prefer MGS1 though, I will admit. Game blew my balls off when I played it at 10 years old. Changed my views and expectations of video games forever.
Royal Knight I bought the game when it came out and it was a revelation. Bear in mind that the presentation at the time on PS1 was so far ahead of everything else on the console - the richness of the colours, lighting and environmental detail were seriously impressive at the time for 14 year old me. Only Soul Reaver could stand up to MGS in terms of the maturity and depth of its story in an action game. Then the cherry on top is the esoteric, 4th wall breaking tone that has never been matched by any other game franchise. It's one of PS1's finest games, unquestionably.
After the release of MGS5, The fanbase was splitted to two. Those who hated the game and those who still enjoy the game despite it's flaws. this mark the Era call the phantom war.
SuperFusionAJ93 yeah it's truly unfortunate not that people disagree but that a bunch of people on either side get so hostile if someone's view is different from their own. Personally I loved 5 it's either my 3rd or 2nd favorite with 3 being my all time favorite. I understand why people dislike 5 but for me the gameplay was amazing and despite the story having problems I loved the ending and all the tapes dealing with zero, skull face, and big boss.
solid snake 323 I enjoyed the gameplay and kind've accepted V for what it is. Truth of the matter is that MGS' story stopped being good after the 3rd game - the continuity is completely torpedoed in 4 in service to some awesome set-pieces and in your face fan-service that all works well on the first playthrough, Peace Walker was a fun, bite-sized portable game with a goofy story that ultimately goes nowhere until its final moments and V was a fun as hell open world that unfortunately got more depressing the more you played it and realized how empty the world and dragged out the mission structure was; compared to Ground Zeroes, the side missions were laughably simplistic. None of these games are perfect, but I believe MGS4, Peace Walker and V were just vessels for Kojima to explore themes he was interested in rather than trying to make a fulfilling series story arc, but the gameplay got better and better with each instalment.
You know, I could get the anger if the series wasn't definitively over (no Survive, you do not count). It's not like it matters if people like it or hate it because we're not getting more either way so it's not like the fan reaction will have any effect on the future of the franchise since there isn't one. People should just accept it's divisive and move on.
Yeah. "Sins of The Father" is ultimately a song that belongs better in 4. While I respect the tragic feel of the music used for the "final crawl", could you imagine that sequence with "Sins of The Father"? I'm surprised someone hasn't made a music video of that, with additional scenes from the end game and the denouement. Would totally make up for the depressing jeep ride with the Skullface. XD
Rasuke11 they already redid MGS1 and it sucked horribly. Taking the dark tone, near perfect soundtrack, and one of a kind delivery of the story MGS1 provided and turning it into a cheap action film style piece of shit that was ‘The Twin Snakes’ was the single biggest disappointment I’ve ever had in gaming. If they could redo MGS1 and maintain, build on, compliment the things that made it great... that would be nice.
@@c4i3ooze51 actually, remade. I don't know if you meant remake but a remaster wouldn't be enough. A remake of the original game would be perfect imagine it for the ps5 and xbox series x
theeOnslaught if you enjoy repetetive gameplay, lack of real depth, paperthin characters and nonexistant story then good for you dude. It was a decent game but a TERRIBLE MGS . Started out great but didnt live out to the hype in the end.
the hype that I felt for mgs5 after ground zeroes was probably the most excited I've ever been for a game. I watched every single video that yong made on the trailer analysis and especially the countdown retrospective
cloudbloom I was excited too about MGSV The Phantom Pain and I still play it till this day and fuck them haters MGSV The Phantom Pain is a great and excellent game to me this is how I predicted to the storyline to be and how it ended and I also enjoyed it personally and I never get tired of it and also never quit on.
@@ninjax1983 I really liked the game too I liked the story but skull face would be great to be more serious and quiet death should have a meaning like she being kidnapped by the (unused) skull unit called light whilst she dies because of not telling the location of mother base ( a bit like what happened to Jason Todd in the batman comic universe , if you know what am talking about) and snake immediately finds her dying in skulls face main base or quiet couldn’t bare the torture and she revealed the location of mother-base but ultimately dies by skull face however later mother base would be attacked by the location being revealed and you and your men including ocelot and kaz goes to war with XOF whilst this war happens at mother-base (I believe if mother base was huge this could happen and I believe skull face controlling the metal gear and destroying some parts of mother-base would give him a serious character and an actual boss fight of him but I would want the scene to be dark and environmentally being rainy and loud also the war and boss fight between skull face and XOF would be really difficult.
Peace Walker is one of my favorites, mainly because of all the interesting directions in which it pushed the envelope. I'd like to point out the often misunderstood significance of the theme for the Paz fight! The song itself is actually the song Paz sings for the Peace Day celebration. It probably would have gotten an English adaptation if Peace Walker had originally been a major release. Still, the lyrics are easy to grasp, and the overall meaning of it all adds a lot to the fight. The song is Paz singing about her conflicting feelings, so it provides a look into what's going on in her head versus what she's openly doing and saying.
MGS2 will always be my favourite. It has the best themes in the series and uses the video game medium to it's fullest when presenting those themes. Much like Nier: Automata has done recently. Plus the gameplay was fantastic. Controls may seem archaic to those that have become dependent on the L2 + R2 system that permeates every game these days but once you mastered the controls in 2 you could pull of some pretty great feats. Not too mention, Substance was loaded with content. Also, I liked Raiden for what it's worth. He served a good purpose and it was amazing to see Snake from a different perspective. Teaming up with him at the end is a very memorable moment in the series that I rarely hear referenced by fans these days. As for lists: MGS2, MGS1, MGS3, MGSV, MGS4, Peace Walker, Portable Ops.
I agree so much with what you say about controls. Seems like everything that doesn't have a third person shooter control scheme nowadays is immediately labeled "clunky", it's stupid.
I disagree with everything except nier automata. I'd put that game tiers higher than mgs2. Yoko taro is like the new hideo. Msg spiraled downhill after 3 and I don't think hideo has it anymore.
+Tyler Edlin The series kinda went downhill after MGS3, but MGS4 was still an amazing way to end things. But I think Kojima still has a good amount of talent left in him. Ground Zeroes had some great stuff in it, P.T was a masterpiece, and Phantom Pain had some great flashes of brilliance. I think that since Kojima is finally done with the MGS series, and left Konami, he can be free and create whatever he wants. But now that you said you think that Nier Automata is greater than MGS2, I'd like to give it a shot.
@@TylerEdlin84 no lmao I've finished Nier automata and it's great but my God was it overhyped over overrated, the game gets very boring at times and the gameplay itself isn't all that great, mgs2 is definitely better
MGS4 is the weakest of all, barely present gameplay and a 50% retarded storyline. MGSV's cassette tape dependent story may have the most boring presentation but what is actually written is far superior to MGS4.
In my opinion: 10. Metal Gear 9. Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake 8. Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops 7. Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes 6. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker 5. Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty 4. Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain 3. Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of The Patriots 2. Metal Gear Solid 1. Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater
1. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 4. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake 5. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain 6. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 7. Metal Gear Unpopular yet honest opinion. Looking forward to Death Stranding.
Hearing you talk so in depth and clearly knowing your facts just as someone who's played and enjoyed these games have. It literally brings tears to my eyes. Metal Gear has and always will be my #1 favorite game franchise of all time. Thanks for this video Yong. Metal Gear fan since 2000 btw.
MoviesNGames007uk While not my favorite, I do really love mgs4. The long cutscenes really have some awesome moments, like Liquid controlling The System, and Meryl's wedding. Plus it really shows some characters in cool ways, like Raiden taking down Geckos like they're nothing. Plus the final Liquid fight is honestly one of my favorite bosses in the series. And that epilogue always brings tears to my eyes
MGSV has the best gameplay... so why not rank it high? yeah some of the open world is a bit empty and the story isn't as amazing as some of the others, but the gameplay was on point and really, really good.
MGS1 has the best and most memorable story for me. MGS3 does everything well and overall, is just a better game. However, it is just not as memorable as MGS1.
I have to agree here. MGS1 had shocking moments as well, like Miller being found dead and that it was Liquid the entire time. The feeling of playing MGS1 for the first time is unmatched, because I didn't know what to expect.
I think the isolation of shadow mosses and the heavy presentation of the game (as opposed to silly games that we used to have back then) makes MGS 1 experience distinguishable and memorable
"Greet recruited soldiers (by slapping them in the face and shooting them full of tranquilizers, and then having them thank you for it )" God I love Kojima so much....
MG2 Solid Snake is by far my favorite story out of the franchise. It had everything; Snake's first love interest, Gray Fox, Big Boss vs Solid Snake, Campbell and Snake's first mission, the first iconic meet up in the women's bathroom, fun boss fights, great music, conversations with Master Miller, a battle with a Metal Gear, suspense, mystery, betrayal, an engaging narrative, and the reason young Snake travelled to Alaska to become a musher which he explains to Meryl about at the end of MGS. Annd i really loved Peace Walker too. The co-op was sooo much fun and the mech boss battles were unique and fresh in the series. The main characters were diverse and it was fun learning about cultural and political facts in 1970s central America
Great video! I have always been a huge fan of the series. Not having completed them all this video helped put a few pieces together. great content as always!
@@davidbaguetta127 He never said it was not canon. It's just regarded as not apart of the main line of games he directed and is more of a side story. That doesn't mean that it didn't happen.
you know your early when the only quality you can choose is 1080p... wait where are the other quality options I want my 144p, 240p, 360p, 480p and 720p!
Edwin Chauca that's not true either. With most tanks and copters you can either destroy them or capture them. In V no matter what you use, the outcome is the same.
Lack of boss battles and in game story (outside of cassette tapes) was a HORRIBLE feeling of PP. But the gameplay, infiltration options, gunplay, base building just about makes up for it. I would love the complete package, but still
Only 2? Yeah right. There was: The Skulls Amror / Mist Unit Quiet Eli The Man on Fire The Skulls Sniper Unit And of course Sahelanthropus Not to mention the fact that in Peace Walker or MGS1 a Tank or a Chopper were a designated boss, but in TPP they are a normalized factor of general game play. I admire that level of power-creep where what used to be a big scary boss is now nothing to you
Yong I don't say this often enough but I LOVE THIS VIDEO! I can't say I fully agree with the placement of each game on the list, mainly due to the problem you had mentioned with each game being special in it's on way. However you did kinda did the head on the nail and surprised me with how high you personally placed MGSV on the list given I've been following your videos since before its release. This video was VERY well polished. I tend to notice visual errors and such in videos but this one was excellent! I've been loving the way you seem to have a more discussion driven tone and vocabulary in your videos now than you did a couple years ago. Keep up the great work man.
Agreed. Kinda sucks I can't admit to liking it without people getting pissed. Half these comments are people mad at Yong for liking MGSV as much as he does.
it did have the best gameplay but 0 boss fights 0 codec conversations next to 0 story. and missing content makes it one of the worst in the entire series.
Did you miss the fight against Quiet, or the Skulls, or the Man on Fire, or Metal Gear Salhelanthropus? There were boss fights. Story was there too, though it was definitely the worst thing about the game.
MGS-genome soldiers, unique characters MGS2-memes, Y2K and conspiracy theories MGS3-cold war, patriotism, student mentor relationship MGS4-nanomachines, time, age MGS5-techno parasites(precursor to nanomachines), immersion and choices
MGS3 is my number one as it was the most nostalgic game since I played it in my childhood. So many beautiful memories originate from my childhood as a result of that game. So it really breaks my heart to see Konami using my most nostalgic game to be remade on a Pachinko machine, truly devastating.
Portable Ops is a Canon as it happen before the peace walker incident. The Recruit you saw in the Beach was the Soldiers who Saluted Boss at the ending of Portable Ops.
I feel more like konami ruined the game because they wanted to fire kojima as soon as possible so they rushed the game and it wasn't what it could have been.
C4i3ooze exactly, however, I still like the game a lot, chapter two felt kinda like all the cutscenes and story kojima had done, but Konami didn't know where to put them so just threw them all over the place. and since kojima was gone they didn't know how to do missions and advance the story, they just made you play through older missions (tbh, I didn't mind at all). It is still a great game, but it could have been better, especially chapter 2. That said, MGS is my favourite game series of all time
I still think chapter 2 was made like that on purpose to convey a message regarding the cycle of revenge, Kojima actually talked about it and here is a quotation from Kojima himself that makes me believe it was an artistic decision. ""We often see good versus evil encounters in the closing scenes of Hollywood movies, which are meant to satisfy their audience. But this game's theme is the chain of revenge, the phantom pain - the continuous chain that you experience when the target of your vengeance is gone. It is not possible to convey the subtleties of this theme in a standard boss battle." This kinda why I love chapter 2...I think it was a misunderstood chapter...I mean really...is there any reason Kojima had to re-use missions in chapter 1 when he easily could have just had the new chapter 2 missions? especially that the repeated missions aren't required to advance the story?
"yes there is a reason for the missions, Kojima ran out of budget" -Umm, No? That isn't the reason...you don't have any evidence to back this up...just because some moron said it on the internet, doesn't mean you should go on repeating it without verifying. "thats why he sold the prologue as a seperate game, it did enhance the devolopment of MGSV but he fucked it up the moment he started working on Silent Hills when the Phantom Pain wasn't finished 100%, he should've finished the game first then move to a different project, in the end everything went to shit and SHs was cancelled" -Dude...what is your evidence for such nonsense? GZ was sold separately as marketing for TTP and to get feedback on how to improve the gameplay. Secondly, All he did was create a small demo for Silent Hills, he didn't start working on the project while doing TTP; stop acting like you were there with him and knew what he was doing. "The repetitive missions has nothing to do with Skullface's downfall or the feeling of phantom pain" -Or appearantly you didn't understand ANYTHING from the quotation I sent you, so let me repeat the more crucial part that you didn't seem to understand. "But this game's theme is the chain of revenge, the phantom pain - the continuous chain that you experience when the target of your vengeance is gone. It is not possible to convey the subtleties of this theme in a standard boss battle." This here clearly states that Chapter 2 represents the outcome of revenge AFTER the target of your vengence is GONE...and that was Skull Face...is this concept really that hard to grasp or you didn't read it carefully? "Kojima himself said that he was late to deliver the game, it was supposed to be released 6 months earlier" -Umm, okay...so every dev delays their games, this doesn't prove anything. "If it was an artistic decision like you said and it has nothing to do with the problems I mentioned.....well intentional shit is still shit!" -No...it's not shit.... you just don't want to think about the story you experienced, hence why you are resisting clear evidence that chapter 2 wasn't rushed. If you simply get over how the past MGS games told their stories and try to understand why MGSV is the way it is...then maybe you'll see it's not "shit"...but I am not gonna try to convince you, all I can do is advise you and you can either take it or leave it...and from the looks of things your mind is already made up and you're not willing to see it in a different light.
Ground Zeroes has in my opinion the very best intro. A majestic long-take that's slowly reveiling Skullface while the musical masterpiece "Here's to you" plays in the background.
"Phantom Pain's Motherbase can be physically traversed, allowing players to walk through, greet recruited soldiers" *shows Big Boss beating the crap out of everyone* Metal Gear in a nutshell
MGS 4 is my favorite gamo of the series! the ending with "father and son" and the sequence with snake and his mother in the motorcycle... man, i'm almost crying here!
Great video :) I might give MGS V another chance one of these days. I've accepted that it's not the game I wanted at all, so maybe now I can enjoy it for what it is. Still, MGS 1 is the best in the series. It's one of the most important video games ever created.
@@Gadget-Walkmen It tells it's story with way too much exposition dumps, especially with the overuse of the codec. MGS3 has lots of exposition too, but it often tells it in such a dynamic way via its cutscenes which are full of action. The Ames scene, the Johnson scene and the Emma scene all have characters right next to each other talking via Codec. It's obviously too save money animating the scene and they come up with an unconvincing reason as to why they are talking that way, but if you have to invent a reason to explain away your cost saving solution to the exposition then maybe you have too much exposition? There are other flaws too, the voice acting for one isn't as good as the first game, Dead Cell are inferior to Fox Hound and it's a shame that the bad guys never are a united front - Olga is doing her own thing, Ocelot it's doing his own thing and Solidus and Fatman, two actual members of Dead Cell are carrying out their own schemes too! When 50% of your unit is scheming against it, then it's not great. It also doesn't help that the Big Shell is just generally uninteresting a location. The opening on the tanker invokes such an incredibly mood with the rain soaked decks and the claustrophobic corridors, whereas the Big Shell with it's bright sunlight and repetitive bridges is characterless.
Hey yong I would love too see you play the whole Metal gears solid series So if you have the time during a slow gaming news day you should live stream or something...
@@TequilaToothpick exactly, people always ignore the insane amount of improvements it made and the details not to mention how the story literally predicted the future in some ways
I'm so happy that Snake Eater made the first spot- definitely my favorite of the series and the one that really keeps me hooked- setting up not only the entire series but all of the characters' motivations for further games as well as the best characters!
Peace Walker is far better than #7. Despite its PSP limitations, it has the most content of any game in the series (I don't count MGSV's vapid open world). The Co-Op, when I used Ad-Hoc Party on PS3, was FANTASTIC. And I don't know watcha talking about, the AI Bosses were great! Especially the Chrysalis and PW. PW is by far my favorite boss in the series. So much is at stake, the boss (quite literally) has an insane amount of variety and the nuke launch scenes were extremely frantic. Sahelanthropus is awesome, but is far slower, and far less difficult.
Edwin Chauca you did play mgs right? I think you might be wearing nostalgia goggles. The AI was just as terrible. Also, those motherfucking snipers with the boonie hats! Not getting spotted by them in their camo was definitely not easy the first time around. And the drones! Also PW (boss) is hard as shit! Plus the custom vehicles! Maybe it's not ridiculously difficult for purely main missions but 100% was no easy feat.
+Mike Nepo I agree too, PW is often seen as one of the worst canon entries, but I feel like it's just an evolution of the franchise, and a fairly good one. Most of the people who didn't like MGSV probably didn't play PW and were expecting a game like MGS1 or 2, since TPP is essentially a big modern console version of PW. And yeah, it was difficult, especially solo and especially with those damn PSP controls :p . I still remember trying the Rathalos fight over and over again.
I agree. Through my gaming history one of the biggest reliefs was beating rathalos. I still play peace walker to this day, and although I feel like snake eater is better story driven, i remember it was wayyyyy easier than peace walker. I am a bit of a handheld fan boy, but I don't have the slightest regret in buying a vita to play pw at a higher fps. Great game and one of the best in the franchise.
I'm with you, brother. Peace Walker is fantastic and has an amazing amount of content for a PSP game. I loved the story and all the characters. The silliness littered in there (SUNLIGHT! & Monster Island) was so much fun. It's #3 on my list behind iconic MGS1 and 2.
I made an in-depth video on this a while back, ended up going with Peace Walker < MGSV < MGS4 < MGS2 < MGS1 < MGS3. But for me there was very little difference between my love for 4, 2 and 1 (albeit for different reasons). All I'm certain of is MGS3 has always stood alone at the top, it just had it all in my opinion.
I am a big MGS fan as you can probably tell by my name here. I agree with many things you say in the video and i definitly appreciate that this video exists! Its a sort of trip down memory lane for fans and a way to easily explain to others why MGS is so great, so firstly i would like to congratulate and thank you for this video. I dont agree with the ranking itself though, in more than 1 game, i wont go into detail on that though as im pretty sure nobody cares. But what i would like to do is ask if you can make a Legend of Zelda version? I am pretty sure this one took alot of time to make with editing all these pieces together, thing is, i am not a Legend of Zelda fan, i know nothing of it but i keep hearing how great it is, and to hear someone whos tastes i trust say it as well, just made me think that i really might be missing out on something! So thats my request, im sure i am not the only one wishing for this, but if you could find the time i would greatly appreciate it! Take care, Yong.
Matt Macaulay Many fans loved it, flaws and all. I loved MGS V too. Some people just can't accept that. The gameplay in MGS V is my favourite, but my favourite game is MGS3.
Yeah the gameplay was fantastic and the story that was there was amazing. It's just that there wasn't that much of the story there, i wanted so much more. More cutscenes, more dialogue just more story elements in general.
Iceray Exactly what I felt too. And finding out about the whole mission 51 fiasco was just sad. Clearly the Eli storyline wasn't supposed to end the way it did.
Any chance we can get a ranked list of the non-canonical games? It'd be interesting to see if any of them hold a candle to the 'solid' series. If not, it'd be cool to see how miserably they messed up.
Man, peace Walker was so much fun. If V would have been more like PW in the sense of fun side missions(like where you shoot baloons and Stoff), silly secrets and the feeling that there is always more to unlock/uncover, I might have played it more than a couple of hours I needed for the main missions..
MGS1 was my first game. I first started playing when my big brothers got stuck in the hanger doorway before the raven tank battle so my first memories of gaming are of walking into a tank & somehow making it out alive so raven's speech to liquid after really hit me and I've been playing ever since. I'm confident that i'm a better person today because of Mr Kojima & his teams over the years.
always been hoping for that ever since I got a look at the glorious fox engine. if they do I reckon they would bring it to the switch (as they are officially developing for them) and pc.
Great list, Yong. Lots of great points for every game. Personally, MGS4 will always be my favorite. One of the few games in existence to make me get visibly emotional instead of just tug at my heart strings. Some may be surprised that MGS3 (especially its ending) didn't do for me. Not to say it didn't affect me emotionally, just not nearly as much as MGS4. I think that has to do with the limits in presentation when MGS3 was released. Plus there was the spy movie camp in Snake Eater that sort of took away from the emotional pay off for me personally. Plus in my opinion, MGS4 has the best peformances, especially David Hayter's as Old Snake. With even more gravel to his voice to really make Snake feel aged. His rejection of the "hero" and "legend" status everyone, including the player, tries to give him. Overall one of the best narratives I have had the pleasure of experiencing, indeed not just in a video game, but in all mediums of storytelling. And the best part about MGS is all fans can make their own case for why each other MGS game does the same for them as MGS4 does for me. One of the things Kojima's saga does outside of the games is build this community of fans that can discuss his games' story, subtext, and their personal theories until the end of time. Truly, this is a series that elevates itself above the rest in a sense of wonder and storytelling. God, I fucking love Metal Gear.
Great video. Now you should make in depth analysis of these games. Such of themes and symbolism. For example, Peace walker theme is related to Alice in Wonderland by the caterpillar becoming a buterfly and the looks of Paz. And MGS2 theme is related with Pinochio by Raiden infiltrating the Big Shell through a big hole like a Whale mouth, and then going into the ascending colon, as if he is indide a creature. Besides Raiden is always trying to prove he is a "Real Boy". Just some clues . I hope you make analysisi of these games. Good Luck
My #1 favorite is still Peace Walker. It has the controls, the small managable scale, the adictive base building, the coop, the great story (I loved the AI weapons and costa rica setting, Dr. Strangelove and Huey, Millers enthusiasm for MSF and burgers... Paz as Peace incarnate - only to be an agent of cypher because this is metal gear) - it's the perfect blend of gameplay and narrative.
mgs5 has the worst/disappointing story in the series but it also has plenty of positive as well like art direction, graphics, some level of humor, and easily the best stealth action gameplay in the series. It’s narrative is massively flawed but damn there’s still a lot to be obtained from it. I can understand why people don't like it though.
Nope, game play is the most important part of every game. To be fair in the case of metal gear it is more important then most nearly as important. But look at it from the perspective of 5, there was no story left to tell.
So I grew up with the original Metal Gear on my dad's NES back in the late 90's/early 00's and never remember liking it due to how difficult it was to navigate the area (especially at an early age). But I do remember my older cousin having Solid on his PS1, with me witnessing the Vulcan Raven/Tank fight for the very first time. It was awesome, granted I never owned the system until much later when I began collecting older game systems as a teenager. I did however, play the remake Twin Snakes all the way through back when Smash Bros. Brawl reintroduced me into the franchise back in 2008 and I fell in love with the story and its cast. The game of course left me wanting more, and so I had to wait three whole years to play the sequel in is HD remaster once that came out. Needless to say, it left me very confused until I got older and really started to look at it thematically. During then, I do recall playing a bit of MGS4 before I touched 2 and 3, but it was more of my friend playing and me watching. I eventually played all the way up to Peace Walker (that game still being my favorite in terms of content and missions, but not story, it's still between 1 and 3 for me in that regard). MGSV was a mixed bag for me, while the gameplay was incredible, the environment felt a tad bit too large and too empty for me (sorta like Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time) despite how well detailed and intricate it was. The story also let me down, and maybe it was because I set too high of an expectation for it, and in retrospect, MGS4 should have been the final installment since most could tell Kojima was pretty burnt out from the franchise. I love this series, and I will replay them from time to time, introducing it to new players even those looking for a good story. They are that great of games, they might not have the greatest stealth systems compared to games like the original Thief games on PC or Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and the story might not always make perfect sense, but the production and design is so well done that it's too hard to not recommend and have a great time in the end.
R.I.P. Metal Gear this series basically single handedly shaped my child hood and waiting for each year to pass waiting for the brand new MGS game to see where the story would take us this time thanks for such a strong and beautiful game Kojima
It generally feels like i must’ve played a completely different MGS 5 games than literally everyone else of those people kissing it‘s unfinished ass. It becomes *very* repetetive *very* fast, especially with the Side Ops lists, it‘s an absolute grindfest where you need to grind for hours to get enough GMP and Resources to develop something, only to then again have to wait 18 min. - 2 hours to actually get it, an absolute forgettable and underwhelming story, Snake is the most boring character out of everyone (which is saying something since Ocelot doesn’t act like himself AT ALL in this game), Motherbase is an absolute Maze when you have to do FOB or Target Practice Missions, the Open world is essentially a dead Desert or dead Sahara where you basically run/ drive/ ride actoss it, just to get to the marker which is usually on a much more interesting and simply better Enemy base (the only really „good“ thing on the actual open world) and the absolute lackluster cast of forgettable Bosses. Like, seriously, who were „great“ boss fights? Quiet is the only that comes to mind but even then is rather weak compared to Sniper Wolf or The End. Man on Fire in Africa was decent, but even then it was rather a straight forward snorefast where you simply has to use Water on him and because of the new Camerawork, you don’t even know where the Fire is you constantly run into all the time. Eli was interesting, but i only call it „memorable“ because everything else was absolutely repetitive. And then we have Sahelantrophus who was ok. It was a Metal Gear fight that basically happens in every MG game. This is absolutely embarrassing since Revengencedoes a million times better job having memorable boss fights and characters over MGS5. It honestly feels like people hate on MGS2 and love MGS5 because everyone else says it and they simply repeat it like some hive mind, even thou MGS2 was all in all far better than MGS5.
I actually like how MGSV was delivered. Kojima made its core message literal. The Core message was "What you seen, heard, or learned isn't always the truth" Like how; -Ocelot was speaking and talking naturally When he's talking to Venom, although he only hypnotized himself thinking Venom was the real BB. -Kaz wasn't edgy because he just want revenge, but because he knows the plan. -Zero wasn't a total dick after all, he was actually quite the bro. -The legend of Big Boss is not what it seems. -Skull face is just a guy who wants revenge and the rumors distorted the truth(word of mouth) which made his image terryfing but he's just a guy who have the POWAAAAAH. -Kazuhira owns a Burger Joint. When I realized this, I just laugh my ass off how ridiculous MGSV was. It threw me off guard to be honest.
MG1: The Beginning
MG2: The Improvements
MGS1: The Characters
MGS2: The Plot-Twists, and 4th wall breaks
MGS3: The Story
MGS4: The Feels, and Emotions
MGS:PW: The Portability
MGSV: The Gameplay
and if you think about it, back in 1998 MGS1 had all of these. seriously buying that game back then could've been so amazing
I REALLY like MGS1! And in a way, you are right.
But, I still think that MGS4 and V had better gameplay, that aged better than MGS1, considering the time they came out.
+Yago Kain MGS 1 really did. Each iteration afterward just significantly improved on various parts.
In 1998 MGS1 had good gameplay. Now of course when you compare it to MGS 4 or V in terms of gameplay, it can't compare. And yea, that might not be a fair comparison, but we ARE comparing things here so we're already passed that point (before anyone tries to bring that up, lol.)
Nostalgia still makes me prefer MGS1 though, I will admit.
Snake Eater also has a great soundtrack and sense of humour
it's basically a perfect rendition of a masterpiece
Polintalu Always lol ed at Snake vs Eva shadow wrestling fight XD

After the release of MGS5, The fanbase was splitted to two. Those who hated the game and those who still enjoy the game despite it's flaws. this mark the Era call the phantom war.
SuperFusionAJ93 Liked because of P5 profile pic and Metal Gear
I read it on David Hayter's voice!
Supernatural twist? I think you mean Nanomachines son ;)
MoogleSan Don't fuck with this senator!
MoogleSan wipe this meme from the face of the earth
MoogleSan lol
I fucking love your loli pic XD
MGS4's highs are some of the highest highs in the entire industry.
Blag Cog "you're the toughest, craziest, most hardcore badass on the planet. you're...the shit"
Yes, so much yes.
XD
Couldn't agree more.
and lowest lows in the industry. It's kind of like Batman V Superman I guess.
rest in peace Metal Gear ... god bless Hideo Kojima for making what it is.
Amen.

Sad that it's UNDEAD now
see what I did there
Big Boi ;(
And Konami.
Peace Walker is one of my favorites, i legit think the music in Paz's fight adds a lot to it.
Agreed
They really need to update the visuals on Metal Gear 3 instead of wasting beautiful graphics on slot machines
Agreed. More money would be made if Konami remastered MGS3
No they don't. MGS3 is beautiful!!!
@@c4i3ooze51 actually, remade. I don't know if you meant remake but a remaster wouldn't be enough. A remake of the original game would be perfect imagine it for the ps5 and xbox series x
@@jordantredway5456 I think it wasn't a good Idea to remake a 5 year old game in the beggining... the technology hadn't evolved enough
Man... Remember when we all got excited at playing GZ? Looking forward to Phantom Pain? Oh man....
yes :')
tiernanstevens117 still the biggest disappointment in gaming history for me. Thinking about it right now makes me sooo pissed off.
K For me? It's bioshock infinite. It was gonna be soo much more
tiernanstevens117 yep and I ended up loving Phantom Pain definitely worth the wait! :)
theeOnslaught if you enjoy repetetive gameplay, lack of real depth, paperthin characters and nonexistant story then good for you dude.
@@ninjax1983
MGS fans are just blinded by nostalgia
@@ninjax1983 well said.
@@user-ip3fs9sc5bAm late but your true.
Revengance is underrated. As a hack and slash game it is fucking amazing and has some of the best bosses ever
Yeah, MGS2 is a phenomenal game. The only game I have considered to be a masterpiece.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is much better than you make it out to be. It is one glorious game.
Never said it wasn't good, I think it's phenomenal. It's just inconsistent in some aspects.
MGS4 is the weakest of all, barely present gameplay and a 50% retarded storyline. MGSV's cassette tape dependent story may have the most boring presentation but what is actually written is far superior to MGS4.
Please tell me how Skull Face was written so well.
I don't think he said that. In fact, I think he said that Skull Face wasn't "as imposing as he was in Ground Zeros"
I loved skull faces voice and dialogue but he wasn't that much of an evil villain

MGS4 will always be my favourite game in the series.
And that epilogue always brings tears to my eyes
yes
To you, I say. "You're Pretty Good."
I totally agree
It's funny that you say that because a certain youtuber's "critical close-up" of the game shitted on the game and everybody is now shitting MGS4.
To those of you complaining about MGSV being Yong's #2 choice, I say this:
What a crime he enjoyed a game more than you did.
Tom Brearley-Smith
Exactly, there's this glorious thing Yong is entitled to called an opinion.
Oof, shots fired!
Just all opinions man.
MGSV has the best gameplay... so why not rank it high? yeah some of the open world is a bit empty and the story isn't as amazing as some of the others, but the gameplay was on point and really, really good.
no its because he changed his opinion bcs of backlash my friend. before this Video he ranked tpp 1st.
God I love ranked list videos well done like these. These and retrospectives are my favorite type of videos.. Good job Yong
"Greet recruited soldiers (by slapping them in the face and shooting them full of tranquilizers, and then having them thank you for it )"
God I love Kojima so much....
"Thanks for that, Boss!"
Snake eater had Volgin and Raikov.
And the crotch grabbing...
Metal Gear Rising will always be my favorite canon game.
Kevin Duane Lacuata love it too!
Kojima not consider it as canon
@@davidbaguetta127 He never said it was not canon. It's just regarded as not apart of the main line of games he directed and is more of a side story. That doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

Criticising PW for lack of boss battles, when V has only 2.
Garretth Berne Thank you.
Edwin Chauca that's not true either. With most tanks and copters you can either destroy them or capture them. In V no matter what you use, the outcome is the same.
Garretth Berne there are some boss battles that can be easily skipped like skulls and volgin encounters
Lack of boss battles and in game story (outside of cassette tapes) was a HORRIBLE feeling of PP. But the gameplay, infiltration options, gunplay, base building just about makes up for it. I would love the complete package, but still
Only 2? Yeah right. There was:
The Skulls Amror / Mist Unit
Quiet
Eli
The Man on Fire
The Skulls Sniper Unit
And of course Sahelanthropus
Not to mention the fact that in Peace Walker or MGS1 a Tank or a Chopper were a designated boss, but in TPP they are a normalized factor of general game play. I admire that level of power-creep where what used to be a big scary boss is now nothing to you
Great list Yong, dlad to see MGSV getting some love! All games in the series are incredible!
Amazing video, Yong! Though I wouldn't have placed TPP so high up on my list, I still think this is a rather good list!
I agree with everything but I would swap mgs4 and mgs5
Rowan Betts I want to thank you for mot getting super fucking triggered and blasting Yong for liking MGSV
I love MGSV, but the story was a little lackluster and the middle of the game was empty, but other than that it was great, especially gameplay wise

People in the comments acting like MGSV didn't have by far the best gameplay in the series.
LiverSpottedHunk, because it didn't.
LiverSpottedHunk I would say better game mechanics, the gameplay was repetitive and boring imo
Compared to other mgs games ? No. Gameplay was fucking repetetive cluster fuck, and overall gameplay mechanics are non-existent.
it did have the best gameplay but
0 boss fights
0 codec conversations
next to 0 story.
and missing content makes it one of the worst in the entire series.
Did you miss the fight against Quiet, or the Skulls, or the Man on Fire, or Metal Gear Salhelanthropus? There were boss fights. Story was there too, though it was definitely the worst thing about the game.
One thing I truly wish I could do is to completely forget about these games just so I can experience them fresh again.
The soundtracks are goosebumps galore.

MGS3 is my number one as it was the most nostalgic game since I played it in my childhood. So many beautiful memories originate from my childhood as a result of that game. So it really breaks my heart to see Konami using my most nostalgic game to be remade on a Pachinko machine, truly devastating.

If only MGSV could make it to the expectations, it would've been the best video game ever made.
So it's just another case of "Oh no, the story isn't what I expected! If only it did then it would have been the best videogame ever!" basically.
It is not possible to convey the subtleties of this theme in a standard boss battle."
This kinda why I love chapter 2...I think it was a misunderstood chapter...I mean really...is there any reason Kojima had to re-use missions in chapter 1 when he easily could have just had the new chapter 2 missions? especially that the repeated missions aren't required to advance the story?
"yes there is a reason for the missions, Kojima ran out of budget"
-Umm, No? That isn't the reason...you don't have any evidence to back this up...just because some moron said it on the internet, doesn't mean you should go on repeating it without verifying.
"thats why he sold the prologue as a seperate game, it did enhance the devolopment of MGSV but he fucked it up the moment he started working on Silent Hills when the Phantom Pain wasn't finished 100%, he should've finished the game first then move to a different project, in the end everything went to shit and SHs was cancelled"
-Dude...what is your evidence for such nonsense? GZ was sold separately as marketing for TTP and to get feedback on how to improve the gameplay.
Secondly, All he did was create a small demo for Silent Hills, he didn't start working on the project while doing TTP; stop acting like you were there with him and knew what he was doing.
"The repetitive missions has nothing to do with Skullface's downfall or the feeling of phantom pain"
-Or appearantly you didn't understand ANYTHING from the quotation I sent you, so let me repeat the more crucial part that you didn't seem to understand.
"But this game's theme is the chain of revenge, the phantom pain - the continuous chain that you experience when the target of your vengeance is gone. It is not possible to convey the subtleties of this theme in a standard boss battle."
This here clearly states that Chapter 2 represents the outcome of revenge AFTER the target of your vengence is GONE...and that was Skull Face...is this concept really that hard to grasp or you didn't read it carefully?
"Kojima himself said that he was late to deliver the game, it was supposed to be released 6 months earlier"
-Umm, okay...so every dev delays their games, this doesn't prove anything.
"If it was an artistic decision like you said and it has nothing to do with the problems I mentioned.....well intentional shit is still shit!"
-No...it's not shit.... you just don't want to think about the story you experienced, hence why you are resisting clear evidence that chapter 2 wasn't rushed.
Is that metal gear for the NES or the MSX version in the hd collection?
Ground Zeroes has in my opinion the very best intro. A majestic long-take that's slowly reveiling Skullface while the musical masterpiece "Here's to you" plays in the background.
"Phantom Pain's Motherbase can be physically traversed, allowing players to walk through, greet recruited soldiers" *shows Big Boss beating the crap out of everyone*
Metal Gear in a nutshell
Fully agree with #1. One of the best games ever made.
MGS 4 is my favorite gamo of the series! the ending with "father and son" and the sequence with snake and his mother in the motorcycle... man, i'm almost crying here!
I feel like I have to finish and review all these games again to rank them !!!
Great video :)
I might give MGS V another chance one of these days. I've accepted that it's not the game I wanted at all, so maybe now I can enjoy it for what it is.
Still, MGS 1 is the best in the series. It's one of the most important video games ever created.
MGS2 is the best game ever made. Truly transcendent.
It's a flawed great.
@@TequilaToothpick It's nowhere near "flawed" the hell?!? Where the hell is this coming from.
Swoooze This seem more like
your nitpicks, than “flaws”.

@@TequilaToothpick exactly, people always ignore the insane amount of improvements it made and the details not to mention how the story literally predicted the future in some ways
My list is pretty simillar to yours.
it's a perfect the list honestly if I were to make one it would pretty much be the same thing. you did a great job with it
I'm so happy that Snake Eater made the first spot- definitely my favorite of the series and the one that really keeps me hooked- setting up not only the entire series but all of the characters' motivations for further games as well as the best characters!
Sahelanthropus is awesome, but is far slower, and far less difficult.
ikr, pw is actually my 2nd favourite mgs game.

I agree too, PW is often seen as one of the worst canon entries, but I feel like it's just an evolution of the franchise, and a fairly good one.
Your choice for #1 was totally correct. To this day, when I hear the theme kick in, I get goosebumps; lot of good memories of this one!
I wish Konami would remake all the mgs games on fox engine. Just imagine...
I've played metal gear for years. And I love MGSV.
Fuckin sue me
LOL, AGREED bro, agreed......
Matt Macaulay I'm with my lawyer as we speak.
Great video ! 👍✔
Hey Yong! Wouldn't it be phenomenal if Nolan directed the MGS movie?
How about Hayter do the screen writing?
Fu
FMT 😂😂😂😂😂
Hell no. He already ruined Batman by taking everything interesting away. Imagine what he'd do to Metal Gear.
That would be interesting.
Respect for putting Metal Gear 2 so high on the list. Such an awesome game.
MGS3 remake, make it happen Konami
always been hoping for that ever since I got a look at the glorious fox engine. if they do I reckon they would bring it to the switch (as they are officially developing for them) and pc.
Wouldn’t it be fucking awesome if it was a box set MGS1-3 on a fox engine?
With online play take my money!!
AND TURN IT INTO A PACHINKO MACHINE EXCLUSIVE
PW is 7th???? It should have been at least top 5, dude!
Great Ranking 😎
Great list, although MGS2 is the best game ever made and I WILL NOT HEAR A WORD OTHERWISE.
Writing on Games opinion
Wait your being sarcastic right?? I thought as a game it was terrible and as a story driven experience even worse.
MGS2 is phenomenal and is super meta
no
The only masterpiece of a game I know.
mgs 3 better be first. posted before watching. lets do this.
fuck yeah yong. our list are actually pretty damn close.
I’ll always love 3. It was the first one I played and everytime I hear the intro song I tear up a little bit.
Good Luck
No metal gear rising? Ok😐
MGS3 was awesome....
Awesome list man, my personal favorite is MGS2. I definitely did the games you picked for your top 5 👌🏼
1 MGS
2 MGS3
3 MGS4
4 MGS5
5 MGS2
6 MGSPW
I'm sorry MGS V really just lacked in the story department, and that is the most important part of a metal gear game
mgs5 has the worst/disappointing story in the series but it also has plenty of positive as well like art direction, graphics, some level of humor, and easily the best stealth action gameplay in the series.
I pretty much agree on everything you've said. especially the repetitiveness.
I actually like how MGSV was delivered. Kojima made its core message literal.
The Core message was "What you seen, heard, or learned isn't always the truth" Like how;
-Ocelot was speaking and talking naturally When he's talking to Venom, although he only hypnotized himself thinking Venom was the real BB.
"The burgers of Kazuhira Miller" tapes alone lone made the game a 10/10.
Would you mind explaining the failed execution you mentioned in Shadow Moses?
Gameplay wise it was not very fun and quite annoying if i am being honest. Except for the metal gear boss fight that's one of my favorite boss fights.
