    The term "ploughman's lunch" was invented in 1957 by the Cheese Bureau, an organization that promoted cheese sales. The Cheese Bureau encouraged pubs to serve the meal, which consists of bread, cheese, salad, and pickle.
    The meal was a marketing ploy to sell British cheese in pubs.
    The meal gained popularity after a nationwide marketing push from 1958 to 1977.
    The concept of the meal's ingredients is much older.
    The meal was a mainstay of farmers.
    It was mentioned in the 1837 book Memoirs of the life of Sir Walter Scott by John G. Lockhart.
    In 1891, a group of ploughmen took their employer to court after being served something other than bread and cheese. The court found in their favor and restored their right to bread and cheese.

    The Ploughman's lunch as we know it became popular after Milk Marketing Board adverts in the 70's, which were aimed at increasing British cheese consumption, namely cheddar. However, I am certain that the concept existed long before then. It's a 'picky' lunch/tea of great British foodstuffs after all!

  • @johnroebuck6082
    @johnroebuck6082 Před 11 měsíci +2

    The phrase ‘Ploughman’s Lunch’ was first promoted by the Milk Marketing Board in the 1960s as part of a campaign to promote the sales of cheese, especially in pubs123. However, the concept of the combination of ingredients is much older. The meal in its modern context was likely created in the 1950s, and its popularity grew in the ’60s, when the Milk Marketing Board featured it in advertising campaigns to boost national cheese sales23. The original ploughman lunch was simply a combination of bread, cheese, and pickle which was washed down with beer, ale or cider

  • @lparky4409
    @lparky4409 Před 11 měsíci +2

    Yum, looked good. I thought ploughmans lunch was bread, cheese, onions, some homemade pickle and a pie made from whatever the farmers wife did with the odd bits of the home reared cow, sheep or pig when it had been cut into joints. Personally we usually have half board hotel buffets which gives me a chance to sample different food while the other half sticks to his British food choice. Will be off to Spain in a few days, first time since 2019 for some sun.

    As late as the 1870s, farmworkers in Devon were said to eat "bread and hard cheese at 2d. a pound, with cider very washy and sour" for their midday meal. While this diet was associated with rural poverty, it also gained associations with more idealised images of rural life.

    The spread you got for the ploughmans looks very impressive - a great variety! A true delight for the tastebuds.
    However 2 things... (as ever LOL) ... hot pork pie! and square ham, which we know is processed beyond belief. But the rest of the plate looks a delight. Now to me, the best bit of a pork pie is the jelly... and it has to be with Colemans mustard, ideally made from the powder 'cos it hotter! Ham should be identifiable as a cut of meat... not something made from pink slime. But if you enjoy it, fairy snuff :)
    I sympathise with people who want to serve and be served *real* ham, as it is very expensive to source quality cuts, even in Spain and Portugal, who specialise in it! Here in Portugal, for example, it is nearly always square ham that is served up, but undertandable when you see the price of cured natural ham in the shops. A shame and a curse of the modern food industries.
    Scoring, I would have gone a 9 for the sheer variety of cheese and fresh fruit on the plate. But not a 10. I wonder what your going to score if you ever get a real 10 ploughmans Lee. LOL.
    The venue looks great and you have experienced consistency with good food at good value, so I understand your love for the place. At the end of the day, who could ask more?

    Pierce the Ploughman's Crede (c. 1394) mentions the traditional ploughman's meal of bread, cheese, and beer. Bread and cheese formed the basis of the diet of English rural labourers for centuries: skimmed-milk cheese, supplemented with a little lard and butter, was their main source of fats and protein.[4] In the absence of access to expensive seasonings, onions were the "favoured condiment",[5] as well as providing a valuable source of vitamin C.[6]
    The reliance on cheese rather than meat protein was especially strong in the south of the country.[7] As late as the 1870s, farmworkers in Devon were said to eat "bread and hard cheese at 2d. a pound, with cider very washy and sour" for their midday meal.[8] While this diet was associated with rural poverty, it also gained associations with more idealised images of rural life.

    Hi Lee, yes, you are correct eat what you want wherever you are. I somehow prefer to eat what the locals eat when abroad, but when in Spain or anywhere in the Med I do like a full English breakfast. As for the Ploughmans lunch, it does not really have a history to it. It was just a commercial way of promoting cheese in the 50s.
