- One year of trains! That's a lot of trains, even in a crazy year like 2020. Where did Central Penn Rail Productions go this past year? Well, we'll find out in this video: we traveled to 12 railroads across 10 North American states in four different seasons, visiting a lot of new spots to bring you the action! The entire video was chock-filled with railfan goodies. But since you asked for my favorite train, it was the center-cab switcher street running. It had a great horn on it. Chock one of those likes and several of those views up to me. Good stuff, well worth the long wait.

@@CentralPennRailProductions Yeah, I had to stop for a few days because of major plumbing problems that knocked out my internet. When I got it fixed I decided to take a first time ever Christmas break. This week has been spent preparing for next week (Monday) when I start posting again.

I grew up along the NS Sunbury Line, and before 2020, we used to have all sorts of power. The RBMN/NS Lehigh Line connected in Dupont, and all the NS trains always have foreign power either leading or trailing. But after 2020, everything disappeared. Trains on the Lehigh Line were abolished, and many trains on the Sunbury Line were abolished. What went from 14 trains a day, now sits at 1-2 trains per day. All the power now is usually widecab GEs, the occasional ACe, and the once a week foreign railroad GEVO.
I went from 0 to 16 heritage units this year and saw lots of foreign power and other goodies. Thanks for posting, hope 2021 is just as good!
That's really good! As you can tell in this video, I saw a lot of heritage as well, and I specifically let out a lot more that I saw that will be in the next Harrisburg Line video. Foreign power has dried up here, but we'll see what happens.
We've been getting forgein power almost everyday here BNSF and UP.

I suggest the WNY&P in NW PA. They have big Alcos in multiple unit lashups and the scenery is spectacular!
I had to laugh when you mentioned the leaves coming down the second week of November. Here in Calgary our leaves are long gone already. I love the variety of everything down there, and great video. I like how you frame your shots, very well done. A joy to watch and listen to.

Short lines are definitely fun! As long as you can figure out when they are running. There are a few times when I made the drive and got burned, but most of the time, you see something and it's worth it. Thanks for watching!

Part way thru watching this, I wondered if you caught any York Rail action. Then boom! There they were! I load limestone at the Pennsy quarry off Biesecker Rd, and occasionally I get lucky enough for a front row seat to watch them come thru the quarry!
That's cool! Kbs Road is a good spot to watch them because they lay on the throttle for the dip there. When I have time I'll put those York Rail videos together but it might not be for a bit because I have some other projects I want to finish first. There's so many cool shots in York I definitely want to spend more time there this year. Thanks for watching!

I live in York and I hang out at Norfolk and Southern's Windsor Yard and Yorkrail"s PoorhouseYard on the east end , usually make my way west to Spring Grove , and Porters , where Yorkrail meets CSX and finally Hanover Terminal witch is the Ex Western Maryland in witch I'm a HUGE fan . the only trip i had of 2020 in terms of railfanning was Harrison NJ in August and I caught the Northeast Regional meet up with an Acela. It was really cool. Happy New Year's
That reminds me, I need to cover the NEC. I live closer to the Amtrak Philadelphia-Harrisburg Line so I am always there instead.
I have been watching your videos for about a year now and I cannot get enough. The Harrisburg line is one my favorites. I myself volunteer on the West Chester Railroad, a tourist railroad that runs excursion trains on an old SEPTA line. We have multiple vintage locomotives and some vintage rolling stock. If you are ever in West Chester, PA, I recommend you stop by. I also post videos I have taken over my two years of volunteer work there on my channel.
I have been meaning to get down there as well as film more spots on the Amtrak PH line with the old signals. And thanks for the kind words!

This is an epic video! Thank you for sharing! Me and two other of my good friends were suppose to ride with the F7's on their All Day Railfan Event but COVID made them cancel it not once, but twice. But I've had some great moments. I was able to get Battenkill Railroad's Alco RS36 which is painted to the old D&H scheme being transported from Delmarva Central Railroad to Norfolk Southern en-route to Greenwich, New York. It was all painted and decaled at the old Delaware Coast Line Railroad Shops in Georgetown, Delaware. Such a great sight to see but sad to see a locomotive that was owned by the DCLR go to a new home. Pretty much highlights my 2020 year even though this was taken in January. Hope your doing well! And I checked out your Top 15 Catches of 2020 video, you made me nostalgic for my visits to the Reading Line. I've rarely made the time to get up there after the old signals fell, just wasn't motivated after that, but still a lot of cool spots so I'll have to visit again soon! Thats a beast of a camera, for a long zoom lens I use my Galaxy Camera 2, and for 4k60, I use my S10.

Nice, seems like you had a good year despite everything else happening in the world! I was wondering about the new camera you got, do you think camcorders are better for filming thang digital cameras? I have a newer Canon SX540 that shoots pretty good quality, but I don't know what it's like compared to what you have.
Any suggestions?
I think each tool as it's advantages and disadvantages. There really isn't a one-size-fits-all camera out there, but the Panasonic X1500 is close to that in terms of what I need. I don't do external recording, so the internal codecs are enough - it can record 4K-60p at 4.2.0 10-bit internally and a hard-drive taxing 200mbps (12.5MB/s), CPU taxing HEVC codec. It's the only prosumer-size compact camcorder that offers 4K-60p frequency. It's extremely affordable compared to the alternative (most DSLR bodies + lenses put you over $2000 right out of the gate), so, budget can be a factor. Chasing trains is run and gun, you need to pack up quickly, throw everything in the car and get to the next spot. Seconds matter, there's not always time to change lenses. The largest advantage of a camcorder is a long to wide, motorized zoom lens, in this case, 24-600mm, made possible by the small 1/2.5" sensor. The downside of that is, it suffers tremendously in low light. And the image and color quality is not quite as good as a DSLR. Resolution isn't everything, it's about the information in each pixel. DSLRs offer much more flexibility on that front, but you have to deal with interchanging lenses. Their larger sensors obviously improve low light performance, as well as offer shallower depth of field, which is great for focus pulls. I am looking to add a DSLR to my set up soon, so we'll see over the long run which I prefer, but I have in mind that I will be using them very differently based on the scenario. Again, it comes down to picking the right tool for the right job.

I like that Vermont content. How have you liked the new camera? I am currently shooting with a G9, which don't get me wrong...is a great camera, but autofocus performance isn't the best. I have been looking at the hc-x1500 as well.
It was a love-hate relationship for the first couple months until I started to really getting the hang of it and understanding the limitations. Biggest issues I was having was the audio, the external mic did not sound good recorded into the camera so I now use an external audio recorder for my mic. However, I also use the mic on the camera too since it is of good quality (24 bit). In fact, some of these scenes sounded good I didn't even bother mixing my external track into it (more so for the sake of time), but there's no good way to wind shield the camera mic like I can my external. As for the picture, on CINE-D mode it produces quite a good image (and I set the chroma levels back to 0 because I don't grade a lot in post). Panasonic has dreaded autofocus, although it's better, but not perfect on the X1500. However, most of these shots were in AF. The biggest difference between the G9 and X1500 will be sensor size. The 1/2.5" sensor of the X1500 will reduce your depth of field and bokeh abilities and well as a huge sacrifice to low light. Any amount of gain (ISO) on the X1500 above 3db will grain the image, and get worse from there on up, especially around 9db. The stabilization on the camera is so wonderful that I have shot handheld, even at zoom (some of these shots in this video were handheld). But I think the G9 would be a great camera to run along side the X1500, as I am also thinking about getting a Panasonic DSLR and range of lenses to use with along this camera. Overall, X1500 is a great all-in-one affordable too with some BIG sacrifices if you are a low-light or focus pull shooter, but take it out during a sunny day and it will excel. I have gotten grainy shots on cloudy days too where I just didn't feel like lowering the shutter speed to far...but I also have NeatVideo which can clean up grain to a degree (at the expense of a long render time).
Farewell all those units I honestly lost a little passion for Railfanning because a lot of good power and good sounding horns are gone
I did too but at the end of the day for me it's also about capturing the scene and the change of the seasons, so despite the dip in motivation from the retirements, I will certainly be taking the new camera out for an even more in depth spin this year even if all the trains do have the same power. Every generation of railfanning has gone through this, imagine when people wouldn't even think to lift a camera at a set of SD40-2s on a BNSF stack train, because that was once very common.

3:50 is along the Harrisburg Line a mile east of Richland, PA. First crossing east of town.
4:47 is behind Jackson Park just west of Myerstown, PA off of Main Ave.
8:23 is called "Millers Crossing" near the town of Molino, PA
13:37 is west of Richland but it's private property and I try to only go back there when they are open.
