  • How to modify a 2004 Chevy Silverado to accept a cabin air filter. My truck didn't come with an air filter but you can still cut out the slot under the dash in the heater core housing and slip one in...you will also have to install a cover plate which you can order online. Links below

    This is the same as my 2004 Suburban. What a pain. This helps quite a bit. It could have saved me hours. I have to figure out how to cut the bottom out without a torch.

    This was awesome, Frank. Thank you for the info. I used my saw to cut the core housing and ordered the same items you linked. My 2003 2500HD heater core was 80% clogged with an inch of dirt at the bottom.

    Just did this mod except I used cabin air filter CF8791A, which is a 2 piece air filter. 1) I didn't have to cut out the whole length of the air filter hole. 2) Fitting up the 2 small filters is a lot easier than trying to bend and cram in 1 large filter because of how close the floor is.

      Not as easy as it looks. Dropped melted plastic on my finger and burned it. Not that dirty considering 268000 miles.

    Will these two items (the door and the filter) fit on a 2007 new body style Silverado, extended cab, 4WD, 5.3 engine?

      It should fit. I dont think much changed between the 2004 to the 2007. I also went and looked at the doorman website and its says it should fit a 2007.

    Did you have alot of build up in the space after cutting out the door opening. I have a 2013 the same way and it doesn't seem to have good air flow? Thanks

      Well yes, because a mouse had made a home in there. It wasn't a pretty site tu say the least. Not sure how much build up if any would have been there if it wasn't for that mouse.

    Does anyone know if the retrofit kit filter also fits 03-06 Crew Cabs? I read a random comment saying it doesn't, but can't find any info to back that up. Something about whether or not you have the center console makes the difference?

    Do you think it would have been easier(now that the job is done) to hollow out the bottom instead of cutting it along the side?

      I actually just stuck the knife in from the bottom. I think that's what you were saying by hollowing it out.

      @Jay Who knows. One thing I did notice is that now water collects on my evaporator. However I was also pulling out leaves and pine straw that collected in it without the filter. I'm just glad I have a filter.
      I had issues during a forest fire where I couldn't breath without a filter. Then corona came and I thought it was about time to install it.

    Some auto parts store also have the kit around $50 it's the plate and filter if you need it right then and now.

    Direction of air flow for the filter is going towards the passenger door or towards the driver door?

      Should point towards the driver if I remember correctly. You're filtering the air before it runs across the coils. Coils should be on the left side.

    So, I checked where that filter goes and luckily I don’t have the cover. but, where you screw in the bolt to hold the filters in is broken. Is there something I can buy to replace the screw mount so I can do this?

      Just use some good black tape. Someone in a comment above said save the piece you cut out and put it back with gorilla tape

    Hi i was watching you video because my 07 Silverado Classic is the Same. Inside i see a Filter with Medal inside but it is Really dirty and Has Water inside? Do I replace that One too?? And Or Does the Cabin Air Filter Go Next to it?? Also how can i find the Lil Door Replacement the is cut out? Please Help me Am Going Crazy Here. I just Purchased this Truck and Want to Make It Better

      If you have water accumulating in the plastic housing you probably have a bigger problem. Your heater core is made of metal. And the filter would go next to it. Also I put a link for the door replacement and the filter in the description which you can buy from Amazon

      Okay thank You for Your Help. I already Cut It And Ordered the Part on Ebay. There was a Only a Lil Bit of Water on the Bottom but it was Super Dirty I guess its Been Working as a Filter as Well LOL. I cleaned Everything Up and Put the Filter next to it. Everything seem to Fit Good Now am Just Wating for the Lil Cover. B

    Save your money. Buy the 2 piece filter. Dremel cutting tool attachment. Gorilla tape what's left of the "door" back into place. Doesn't have to be a perfect seal either.

      @@scrappynotcrappy How did you clean the area inside out? Is the radiator fins that need to be cleaned inside? Does the AC work better? Can you tell a difference from restriction from dirty fins? Thanks.

      @@bossbusa I just used a cleaning agent that's used to disinfect horse stalls from tractor supply. I had it handy and it seemed to au the trick. I just sprayed upward into it and got in there with a rag to wipe what I could. As for increased flow I can't say I saw a difference but it sure does smell better.

      The main improvement was that the cabin air was filtered. Kind of like how your home ac has a paper filter.

    On the prior-to-2003 models, they show 2 filters being replaced.
    Does 2003-onward only need this one because it’s twice as wide?

      Good question. I'm not sure. As for my 2004 this is the only location I know of where to install a filter.

      Only space for this one filter the back edge is blocked with another plastic panel
      2002 and prior you can shove another one way back in there

    After heating up your knife or blade, how hard/easy was the job. Anything to watch out for?

      Super easy. I heated it up maybe 3 or 4 times through out the cutting process and took my just a few minutes

      I didn't get any change in airflow (negative or positive). Biggest improvement was getting the cab to smell fresher.

      Air Cabin Filter WIX part # 24814 $10.48 , Dorman 259-100 Cabin Air Filter Cover Plate $19.31 Total $ 29.79Amazon.
      I used a Dremel and a drill bit, plenty of holes around the base., routing and last, round sanding stone to smooth out the edges. It took me 25 minutes. Good luck.

    When you say you used a hot knife ? About how long did it take to cut the front and back?

      About a couple minutes to cut the section out. I heated up a blade with my mini torch and it just melted through the housing and I was able to push/cut through the perimeter of that section.

    In my 2004 there are 4 bolts and each one of them is cuss out.

    What did you cut it with

      I used the blade on my gerber multi tool. Any serrated blade should work. Heating up the knife will help cut through the plastic. I used a propane torch to heat up the blade a few times while I made the cuts.

      @@cesarramos1507 you could probably use a dremel with a cutting wheel or cutting "bit". An angle grinder might be too large to get in there. A die grinder might be small enough to work with a small cutting wheel.

      There shouldn't be a filter in there. You're probably feeling the heater core (metallic). Dont want to mess that up ;)

After 2002 until recently GM manufactured Silverado’s without cabin filters but left the void.. perhaps Frank cut the piece out some time prior to video and was replacing the filter but showing how and where,

      it was because the hump that is right below blocks the installation of the filter, you have to bend the filter to get it in. GM redesigned the trucks with less hump after 2014, and they added the cabin filter at that time.

    Why would GM do that ? I imagine clean cabin air should be important .that is a part of maintenance.That is terrible job on GM Easy ACCESS GM !!! Stop making us buy more ac compressors ,Because i couldn't get to a dam filter that is sealed from me...

      well...I pulled a dead mouse out of the compartment which is what lead me to clean the whole system out and integrate the cabin air filter MOD. Also...it was the only gloves I had on hand and I'm cheap.
