YASUKE: THE LEGENDARY BLACK SAMURAI

- Around the year 1579 an African of Mozambican origin arrived in Japan in the services of an Italian Jesuit, against his will of course. His name was Yasuke, born between 1555 and 1566, and he soon caught the attention of the Japanese for the color of his black skin. One of these admirers would change his life and Japan forever: His name was Oda Nobunaga. This land lord was impressed by Yasuke's height, which was considered a giant compared to the average Japanese of the time, and recruited him to be his bodyguard.
When Yasuke became a samurai in 1581, his legend soon spread that he was an invincible giant warrior with the strength of ten men. He possessed two swords, which he wielded like no other, and learned to speak Japanese fluently. It earned an anime series on Netflix in its honor. He returned to serve the Jesuits and nothing is known about his final fate.

They should do a movie about this guy
He has an animated series on Netflix, and a series about him is also scheduled to be released on the same platform.
@@militaryschedulei want a live action movie
There was going to be a live action movie on Yaskue, starring Chadwick Boseman. There hasn't been much talk about the movie since Boseman's unfortunate death.
@@bobobo-bo-bo-bobo3683”mom I WANT a live action movie 😣😡”
That’s exactly what I said
Instead of black washing current characters, why don't woke companies make a movie about this guy? He seems like a bad ass.
Here we go with the sensitive snowflake always mad about anything "woke" 😂

He wasn't a samurai. Making a movie may still be interesting though.
There's a channel called voices of history
They search for records of ancient people's who traveled the world
One of their recent videos was something like an Italian or Spaniard recordered a samurai cutting and I think killing an Aztec nobleman. They cite their sources and where you can see the records first hand online for yourself.
You should check out their channel.
Although there are no historical sources stating he was a samurai, nor that he was ever taking part in a battle, there also exists a more romanticised version of his historical figure, in which he was a bad ass warrior as claimed in this video.
That would be a cool movie to watch. Historical movies don't need to be 100% accurate, some romanticisation is fine for entertainment purposes.
Unfortunately the end would be a downer since he probably ended up back in chains after his brief service to Nobunaga.
Oda and the rest of the Japanese thought he was a blessing from the gods ,oba at first thought he was a god or a demon guardian because those deities they believe in had black skin and the statues of them where black and the Japanese ( most ) never seen someone of that dark of skin or someone with the height and build of yuske
No one thought that.

No. He has never been a Samurai. Oda only grant him a servant position.
He wasn't a samurai, but he was a retainer. That's still a noble position
@@user-rq7ky4tc3sHe was given back to the Portuguese after Oda died so he was more of a servant.
@@RyanG0899 We have no idea if he was returned to slavery. But his official position was a sword retainer, as he was given a sword and a stipend. He was also clearly friends with Oda Nobunaga or at least had a close relationship that wasn’t master-servant.
After Oda died, Yasuke was the one who tried fighting against the Akechi clan
@@user-rq7ky4tc3s he was a servant. A sword bearer is a paige.
The tale of Yasuke still remains much of a mystery till today, as far as i'm concerned there's lots of debate whether Yasuke was even strong to begin with, Most articles you'd find are mostly with the narrative that states that he was tall and dark, some of them includes that Oda was amazed by yasuke's strength having it described to be the strength of 10 men and some other articles including Yasuke's official wikipedia does not include that sort of information, I feel so sad that we may never know how Yasuke performed as a samurai itself in battles so a man can only dream :(
He was a personal guard. He was never a Samurai, for that he would have needed to be a land owning elite of Japanese origin.
This story has simply been distorted by tik tok and woke "historians". The Japanese would not have made him a Samurai, a personal guard with Samurai training yes...but without the political rights that would have made him Samurai.
@catsslave being of black and Japanese decent I agree 💯 with you but I'm tired of that "woke" word lol being aware of your history and origins isn't woke it's just knowing by doing your research where'd that word even come from really
He was not a samurai.
@@Dontedreadedupwoke nonsense.
@jiggerinokobalis609 I agree he wasn't a samurai if there was an African samurai we wouldn't know we weren't here back then
Don't expect the show to be historically accurate, I highly doubt that there were wizards and giant robots that run on dark magic back during that time period. Or The fact that Oda was a tyrant that massacred whole clans All the way down to the children. Not bringing yasuke's honor into question, a samurai's duty is to his Lord. That might be why he left after Oda died.
I really wish they would make a serious historical anime about his life. He deserves a real one. Unfortunately there really isn't that much known about his life so maybe that's why they went historical fantasy route. Or maybe it's because he was so strong and talented that he needs enemies to challenge him to make it an interesting story which is why they choose to go with giant robots
Don't forget the mecha
Yasuke story could literally be the introduction to Ghost Of Tsushima 2 hes the freaking emperors body guard personally trained by the Emperor himself and the first foreign samurai ever to exist and the only foreign samurai to achieve becoming the Emperors retainer meaning he was extremely skilled or extremely strong
He didn't leave Oda after he died, Oda Nobunaga was betrayed by one of his vassals, Yasuke was captured and given back to the Jesuits.... Also Yasuke wasn't exactly a samurai, Samurai weren't just warriors but a noble class, so in order to become a samurai you had to be born into nobility and as a, member of one of the many samurai clans, it wasn't just a title that was given out to people, you could only be a samurai by blood.... Yasuke was most likely a "kosho" or a sword bearer in English and was most likely Oda's personal bodyguard or "yojimbo".... So if anything Yasuke was more like a hired mercenary rather than an actual samurai.... People that claim he was a samurai are ignorant of Japanese customs, culture and history... The only foreigner that supposedly became a samurai was English navigator William Adams, but only because during his stay in Japanese was arranged to marry into a samurai family by Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu and had taken a Japanese wife who was a member of a samurai clan
@@trvpmusic2569that wouldn't work because Ghost of Tsushima's story takes place at least 300 years before Yasuke's arrival in Japan... Also Yasuke didn't serve the emperor, he served one of the many fuedal Lords or Daimyo's that were around during Fuedal Japan
And he wasn't the only foreigner to become a retainer, in fact he never became a retainer at all... He was a personal bodyguard to fuedal lord Oda Nobunaga and Oda paid him for it, he never gave him land or had him marry into a samurai clan... William Adams was the only foreigner to become a samurai and a retainer because the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu who united Japan and put an end to the warring clans, decided to give him a Japanese wife who belonged to a samurai clan... But even Adams himself didn't necessarily train as a samurai or participate in battles he was merely a military advisor to Ieyasu
This is what happens when folks get their history from video games, movies and anime
He is not a samurai, samurai is noble.
He was a legendary until his history cannot be hidden anymore in Japan.
There's almost nothing known about him. A slave presented to Nobunaga. He was given back to the jesuits as an animal after mitsuhide recognized he wasn't a warrior of the oda. Not much else.

He was only in Japan from August 17, 1579 to June 21, 1582, and of those three years he spent 2 as a servant/slave of the Portuguese Jesuits and one under the orders of Oda Nobunaga (to whom the Portuguese gave him as a page. He used it as a decorative object to show to his guests. In that limited year no one can acquire enough experience to be a true samurai.

According to the strongest theories, it is most likely that he dies alongside Oda Nobunaga in Honnouji. We’re Nobunaga was essentially cut down by his own men/general who betrayed him. It would make sense since he was meant to be Nobunaga’s bodyguard so would stick around till his end.
Some theories even speculate that he managed to runaway with Nobunaga’s head after Nobunaga committed seppuku, but this is believed to be false since Honnouji was surrounded by near 10,000 soldiers and this giant would be hard to miss. But he is black so some theories believe he was able to sneak through the dark by blending in with the shadows, just like how ninja would. But then he is a samurai not an ninja, so it’s up to you with what you believe in.
