Basically, the french dude was the first official otaku in history 🤣
Almost, Ranald MacDonald was there before.
More like weeb
Leave it to a frenchman to fight for a romantic lost cause.
😂
@@Altrantis I'm french : that's an automatic "like" on this one !! ;)
The sad thing about William Adams is that he had a wife and son back in England but was forbidden for leaving but he did managed to send regular support payments to her after 1613 via the English and Dutch companies
The movie "The Last Samurai" is also based on the story of a French soldier, Jules Brunet. Jules was part of a French delegation, at the time of Napoleon III, to help the Japanese improve their weaponry and training with firearms. At some point, Jules decided to join the Shogunate forces, just like Eugène... And many more frenchmen, who help building the Republic of Ezo, a remnant of the Shogunate forces.
Fun thing to also know is that although the french government (of Napoléon III) didn’t officially authorised his stay they didn’t officially condone or reject it. Some writing suggests that most higher ups actually approved but due to diplomatic tensions of the time couldn’t officially approve his behaviour
I guess the main reason he's not French in the movie is because of what was happening at that time.
@@mksmike Well French would teach Japanese how to bake baguettes and make love, not much else they can do.
@@wudangmasterlee8123 Well at least they can make love :)
The katsumoto character and events, were based on the saigo takamoris, satsuma rebellion In 1877
I wrote my master's thesis about Eugène Collache and his fellow French officers who took part in the Boshin War. It was a very interesting thing to research.
They resisted the coming triumph of the industrial era?
Are u not a free man sir?
Hey man I'd love to read that. I am a french dude fascinated by this period too. Do you have your thesis available on internet by any chance? Thanks
If someone doesn’t know already, James Clavell’s classic novel Shōgun (made into a very popular tv-series in the 80’s) was inspired by Miura Anjin.
Yup
The TV series is still great even though it's about 40 years old. I'm currently rewatching it 😊
@@kingfisher9725 It’s indeed great! Haven’t watched it in 10 years or so though, I should try and find my DVD’s. There’s a new adaptation in the works too, will be interesting how it turns out.
I bought the DVDs some time ago as "Shogun" and "Roots" were the most memorable series of my teenage years. You can actually watch "Shogun" here on CZcams, someone has uploaded it (9+ hours)!
The book is excellent though
Im French and I think I can explain why Eugene run away from his ship. During the 19th century there were like a obsession about Asia (especially japan) in France. Rich people would make "Japanese living room" in their house, and nowadays you can still see one of them in the house of George Sand. She even got a samurai armor (it was stolen and there were a lot of diplomatic issues with that but that is not the subject).
And the fact that japan was so trendy at that time in France can explain why he wanted to stay.
However, nowadays French people still love japan. The older generation because stories of samurai and shinobi came to us.. and my generation just grown up with Naruto and One Piece.
That's all^^
thank you ❗️ i respect & i love france from Japan
As a Japanese person, I will always love France.
When I was a young teenager, the thing that started my interest in Samurai culture was the book, "Shogun," which was based on the story of the Anjin.
So did I in the 80' !
Yes ! By James Clavell .. the names of the characters are very different book instead of the factual historical names. Very interesting. Would love to see a video by Shogo-san and know his opinion on both the book and the tv-series with Toshiro Mifune and Richard Chamberlain.
John Blackthorne is exactly after William Adams if im not mistaken.
We too in Romania read Shogun since it was translated into Romanian immediately after 1989 when we became free country after the overthrow of ceausescu's criminal & corrupt communist regime
I always love Oda Nobunaga’s story since I was just a kid, but after I play a game call “Nioh2”. There’s a foreigner samurai name “Yasuke” in the game, So I thought it was just a fictional character. Thanks you so much for history lesson. 🙏🙏🙏
I learned about Oda Nobunaga in an Anime series named "Drifters" its an Isekai anime but Mostly historical people from different timelines got isekaid in one world such as Scipio and Hannibal, that Admiral Yamaguchi Tamon,Hitler, and more
You should play Nioh 1 too , where both Yasuke and William clash their swords .
The character of William in Nioh and Nioh 2 is based off Miura Anjin/William Adams.
Nioh 1 and 2 are surprisingly accurate in some manners of history. I wasn't even aware there were western samurai until I played those games. It was really cool to see how Nioh was inspired by actual Japanese history.
I see all you guys are men of culture as well 😌❤️. I’m glad to see my fellow Nioh gamers
"The Last Samurai" is inspired by the story of Jules Brunet a French soldier.
You forgot to talk about Jules Brunet the french soldier who inspired the movie "Last samourai" with Tom Cruise.
One more samurai should be included. When during a storm, “De Liefde”, a Dutch ship crashed into the shore of Bungo, now Usuki, Beppu on 1 June 1600, there was a merchant called Jan Joosten van Lodensteijn, shipmate of Adam Williams. Like Miura Anjin, Joosten was made Hatamoto by Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was given the name Yayosu and a piece of land at the coast of Edo, which became later”Yayosu Quay” or Yaesu. The land given to him was located between the shore and where now Tokyo Station stands. It is easy to find because this exit of Tokyo station is called “Yaesu Deguchi”. A statue in his name can be found at Yaesu-dori. Jan Joosten was born in city Delft in the Netherlands, where a square, Jan Joosten Plein, carries his name.
Amazing ! Appreciated that

Yasuke is so inspirational and awesome and from my country 😆, I just learnt about him now... I’ll read and watch about him. Thank you so much for this wonderful vid!!
Nice to know our ansestor is elite👌
There was also a Dutch samurai, Jan Joosten aka Yayōsu, who was captain William's second mate.
Yasuke is the real afro Samuraï 😂
That's where my head went first!!!!
The only first of his generation.
@@jonecuntapay9561 yeah
@@Jone-Bulande thank the gods from tecmo koei for making the 1st nioh game and im exposed to both yasuke and william adams.
Afro samurai was based from him
On the opposite side some samurai were also knights, i'm referring to a daimyo and his attendants who travelled to Europe and converyed to christianity, the king of Spain knighted them.
The real most ambitious crossover
what's his name?
can I have sources,Im getting interested
I remember reading about a voyage that ended up with young japanese noblemen becoming priests, after meeting the pope, but not knights. Is there another big diplomatic voyage that ended up like that?
@@k.v.7681 That sounds like "voices from the past", and I'm pretty sure they became priests.
Miura Anjin is also a prototype that was used by James Clavell in his book Shogun wich is filmed as a series in the 80's and i often watch it again and again. Toshiro Mifune is starring there as the Daimio Yoshi Toranaga.
Loved this video! Thank you so much for it! :)
Speaking of foreigners in Japan, you should one day talk about Wenceslau de Moraes, a Portuguese writer and officer of the Portuguese Navy, who fell in love with Japan so much after he visited the country in 1889, he never wanted to go back to Portugal, becoming less Portuguese and more Japanese as he got older (world's first weeb?). He wrote books about Japan, had romantic relationships with 2 Japanese women and died in Tokushima in 1929. Fascinating story :D
ありがとうございます from Portugal.
Okay... I've come here because of FX SHŌGUN
It sounds like Tom Cruise's character in 'The Last Samurai' had some elements of each of the foreign samurais that you have described here. Including the unknown end of Yasuke.
Tom Cruise's character is based on Jules Brunet.
@@The_Baron_Samdi You're welcome :)
@@vorsharkar That's irrelevant.the director probably took parts of each Europeans experience, with the Japanese culture and used it, to make an even more robust character
Thank you for your historical contents to educate us, keep it up!
First of all, thank you so much Shogo for your channel!!! I have learned too many things about Japan and you have answer a lot of questions that I had.
I'm from Mexico and at the beginning of the 20th century the called "Mexican Revolution" occurred. There was a certain Japanese man who achieved enormous recognition and appreciation from the country. Nonaka Kingo, known as the "Mexican Revolution Samurai".
He was a renowned doctor who cured several important figures of that time.
I just wanted to share this data for those who did not know.
Greetings, my friend!!!

Hi I am french and I am surprised that one of my compatriot became a samurai It seems that he was the model for "The last samurai" movie. Thank you for the video it was very informative.
Il me semble que le modèle pour ce film était Jules Brenet, on a donc 2 "samurai" français

Very nice topic 😊👍 I didn't know these guys. I'm definitely going to watch Yasuke's movie 🎥
A great video on an interesting topic. Keep up the great work!
ANjin. Incredible. I just started the game ''Nioh'', where the main character is a foreign blue-eyed Samurai called Anjin
Yasuke is one of the bosses. He wants to resurrect Nobunaga.
For some reason, the historical records missed that time when William fought the giant electrified cat. Guess he was just humble like that.

Liked and subbed. I was looking for information on Yasuke because of the Netflix movie and I found you! I love this video and I look forward to learning more about Japan.
Thank you for the interesting video, I didn't know about foreign samurai before
I never knew the black samurai things was real. Very interesting video. To be honest I enjoy all of your videos. 👍🏾
Yea he didn't have many feats he mostly vibed with Oda and crew. But he certainly made an impression on people.
I would assume because no one knows what happened to Yasuke after the incident at Honnoji, and what happened to his body is why he doesn't have a grave like William? Or would I be wrong to assume that? ( obviously this is excluding the other stuff that is made to honor him )
Thank you so much for leaving a comment! As far as I know, there are many legends about what happened to Yasuke afterwards, but no one knows for sure. So there are no graves of him either. If I find any information about it, I’ll share it with you!
legend has it he was sent back to oversea, maybe Africa.
I know one thing for sure; he has no descendants.
Love the content in your videos!

That is so interesting! I love history so much. From all over the world. 😊

wait maybe Eugene Collache was trained with other japanese soldiers for Tokugawa's elite corps by Jules Brunet a French Officer who participate in the boshin war, in the shogunate side, that checks out, Brunet came to japan in 1867 in yokohama.
when Edo falled, Napoléon III gave the order to french officers to going home but Jules Brunet and few others officers refused and stayed there, they leaved the French army to join Enomoto Takaeki at Hokkaido in a hope to counter attack.
after the fall of fort goryokaku (if i misspelled the name sorry) in the hakodate battle, Brunet came back to France and he didn't had any problems and reinstated in the army he will end his career has a general. he was the inspiration for tom cruise's movie role "the last samurai"
I heard about the first two trough the _Nioh_ games and I read about Charles Brunet because _The Last Samurai_ is my favourite movie and I wanted to know what inspired it.
Great video, Shogo!
These stories are wonderful and even better they are TRUE! Truth is stranger and more wild than fiction most definitely. Truth is beautiful.

Very nice video, I enjoyed it!
Thank you, Shogo. Your goal from this time is well in the past now! I thoroughly enjoyed these stories about westerners who adapted to Japan's society and thrived. This serves to counter some of what we have heard about Japan being a deeply prejudiced country and shows that even if these ideas are mostly correct, it was, even then, possible to overcome any barriers.
I love the presentation. Amazing! A++ , S level

Wow a Mozambican samurai.
i would love to see the ship William Adams made for the Japanese. That sounds incredible. Did he make a Western or Eastern styled ship? Or was it a fusion of the two? I would love to see drawings of it. What an amazing thing.
I'm half-Japanese. As cool as it would be to say, my Japanese ancestors weren't samurai. They were smithy's and farmers that lived in the mountains.
they still contribute a lot to functioning society.
It's hard to say, we all have a LOT of ancestors. That's why basically everyone in western Europe is a descendant of Charlemagne for example.
If you forget related ancestors (which in practice lowers the number of ancestors greatly), you would have 2^n ancestors in n generations. For exemple in 30 generations, it's more than 1 billion (more than the human population back then!). Of course in practice as I said, it's less because many of our ancestors are related, but still, a massive number. It's almost garanteed you have at least one samurai ancestor if you're Japanese.
@@xenotypos family tree is brimming with knights and aristocrats, That's why basically everyone in western Europe is a descendant of Charlemagne for example. peasant wishful thinking to make everyone feel special its theory not, your going to have to prove that one by looking into family tree....
Its surprising how many people have descent from Ghengis Khan and Suleiman too, the dudes had lots of wives...
What? Charlemagne? And who said their kids survived or got kids too? Is it backed up by genetics? Source?
Good video, thank you
Amazing video
I only knew William Adams and Yasuke because of the Nioh games, now i know a lot more about the real history behind this two characters, thank you Shogo!
Nice video, really cool histories. Greetings from Brazil
You have an amazing channel, thanks for sharing your beautiful culture. Those stories are incredible, very interesting and inspiring stuff, you always leave something to thinl about. Here in Latin America the colonization left us a very different kind of story so I can tell the story shaped us differently. Much love from Colombia, stay safe
Fascinating! 🌟
Wow, I'm a black man and didn't know the Yasuke story. It almost made cry.
William Adams is renamed to John Blackthorn in the novel Shōgun that romanticized his journeys with Tokugawa.
started at the 47 ronin video n 5 videos later I'm still on shogo.. I wish the world lived the old Japanese way, as far as the culture of honor n loyalty being at the top. great videos shogo
I've read up on Yaske! Yaske was a Beast, and a very disciplined Samauri!!! 💯
Will Adams was from my home town, Medway in Kent. Because of him, Gillingham (his birth place) in Medway is now twinned with Yokosuka, hence several roads in Gillingham have Japanese names. Prior to covid-19, there was an annual William Adams festival held in Gillingham, celebrating the towns friendship and Japanese culture, as well as a Miura Anjin festival held in Yokosuka each April.
Gillingham is also twinned with Ito which was another place where Will Adams held land
I live in the same town in England that Will Adams came from. It's honestly quite surprising that he's not more well-known here, but most people living here have never heard of him.
"Maybe he fell in love with the samurai culture..."
There he is, boys. The first documented otaku LOL
I think one reason Yasuke isn't that popular in the west is that his story is unfinished. You don't know if he died right after Nobunaga, and also Nobunaga has been often vilified in popular culture today.
Learned a lot as always 👺
domo arigatou gozaimasu Shogo san for this very informative video...
I'm really proud to be from the birthplace of the greatest British samurai ever! We have a celebration in September called the Will Adams Festival where we get to celebrate Japanese culture as well its really nice.
I was wondering how much historical accuracy the games, Nioh and Nioh 2, actually had. Now I know :)
a very good informative video.
I found it fascinating when I first heard that the author of the novel shogun was ispirated by a real person (miura Anjin)
That caught my interest, will dig deeper into it all. But i find it very sad how it ended for William Adams / Miura Anjin.
Konnichiwa Shogo san I have to say that the TV series shogun must be taken from what you have just said 5 ships 1 English pilot who became a samurai same year 1598 only he changed the the name to blackthorn played by Richard Chamberlain. I also like your posts very informative arigato gozaimasu.
I was about to say, that it sounds a lot like Shogun by James Clavell. I did not even know that there is a TV series about it, now i need to find that from somewhere.
@@Norther78 HI Isabella78 You can find it on You Tube i watched it myself.
Yes. Clavell's "Shogun" was based on the arrival of *De Liefde* which brought William Adams to Japan. "Shogun" is a horrific dramatization of events.
**Jacob Jansz Quaeckernaeck (of my family) was Captain of De Liefde. A replica of the ship is at, Huis Ten Bosch (ハウステンボス, Hausu Ten Bosu) a theme park in Sasebo, Nagasaki, Japan.
Hi Shogo, what about Jules Brunet. I thought he was the true inspiration for the Last Samurai. Always a pleasure to follow your videos by the way.
