Sonic 2 is my favorite of the classic games, it's the game I can pick up and play through the majority of the game without a continue up to metropolis and beet the game in one sitting. This game is pretty wizard as the kids say.
Mania blows the original trilogy out of the water, but between the three, Sonic 2 is probably my favorite.

To be fair, I believe that the rings that Tails drops in the bonus stages are rings that he picked up himself-rings that you, as Sonic, missed. So, no harm done
I considered that, meant to mention it in the script but it actually does end up mattering when you get into the later and stricter special stages as he can be really helpful in picking up the ridiculous amount of rings they require and he's still very prone to dropping them. His rings to go to your collective count

Another thing I've heard countless times is that the ring requirements change depending on who you play as:
Tails only is the easy mode
Sonic only is the normal mode
Sonic & Tails is the hard mode
Yes, rings that you missed, but as other people have said a thousand times before even right here: the ring requirement is higher if you're with Tails
So yeah, no harm done technically, but it's still worse to play with him

For what it's worth that criticism is true of any sonic game since sonic adventure. They made super sonic just part of the regular story. In sonic generations I don't recall them even giving a very convincing reason that you got super sonic.

15:25 just learned Sky Chase’s music was originally for a winter level and its Christmas winter wonderland music, makes so much more sense.....
The music is really good. The Sonic 2 ending song is "Sweet Sweet Sweet" by Dreams Come True and the final boss song was inspired by "Yasashii Kiss O Shite" by Dreams Come True.
Great video, can't wait for the next sunset city episode especially that part about metropolis zone.
I think we ranted about that one back when we did the Sonic 2 retrospective lol I can definitely say I feel a lot different about the game now than I did when we were covering it on Sunset City

you are the first person i've ever seen to take the Death Egg Robot's detachable arms head on. i would always just cower to the left side of the screen (or right depending where Eggman landed) whenever he begun to use the detachable arms.

So, I guess to fix the special stages, I'd do this:
*All you need is to activate the sign post and have 50 rings. You can hit up any sign post for special stages multiple times. Doesn't matter if you've activated sign posts after it
*Rings respawn after you've died or finished the special stage.
*Tails is invincible, but he is made slower, to balance it out.
*Greater draw distance.
*Super Sonic functions differently. He has a greater top speed, but his acceleration stays the same. Maybe give him a floatier, higher jump, a cape Mario-style glide, or give him a double jump. Make it so once you jump you can toggle the form on or off by hitting a different face button than the one you jumped with.
*Change the ending. Sonic jumps and turns Super Sonic after Tails saves him.

This was my first Sonic game, and it changed playing video games from something I liked to do sometimes to my primary hobby. It was so revolutionary. And, as our first truly cooperative game, it gave me and my brothers and brand new way to enjoy games. It's not my favorite, but it was an outstanding experience that I'll always be grateful for.
So, watched your FANTASTIC digimon world 1 video and now I am a fan. Would love if you kept going and even go through world 2 and 3!
I never really went after the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 2. The half pipe was iconic and innovative, but the lack of reaction time it offers gives players very little control at times. It was a good idea that just didn't quite fit the technology.
The implementation of these special stages is also problematic at times. Several of the goalposts are right in the fastest sections of the stages, forcing you to slam on your breaks instead of blasting through. It flies in the face of everything the game tries to accomplish with the level design.
That's pretty much why I don't vibe with the Super Sonic element of the game. I think just about everything in Sonic 2 gets better when you pretend the Chaos Emeralds don't exist
@@Wayneisboss The funny thing is I didn't really care about Super Sonic at all in Sonic 2, even when it first came out. I had enough trouble beating the game anyway. It's a good thing Sonic Team focused more of their attention on that aspect of the game in Sonic 3 and even brought the Chaos Emeralds themselves into the narrative.
Sonic 2 was a game my mother and siblings and I played very seriously so I was excited to see this video. I had no idea that 1) The condition to access the stage was ring based. Thought it was always just the 2nd goal that triggered it and only certain levels - just coincidence depending on how ring rich that level was. 2) That the ring requirement in the special stage was increased for Sonic with tails. We tried very hard to get it and were never good enough...

Something I wasn't sure you were aware of;
If you had a second controller plugged in, your sibling can control tails as your assistant while you play as Sonic.
It's been a long while since I've played Sonic 2, probably 20 years! I might be due for a replay for one of the games that formed my early childhood.

Playing with Tails actually makes the half-pipes harder because not only does he constantly crash into things and lose rings, but the ring count is actually higher compared to when you go in with just Sonic.

I’ve been so obsessed with this game since the new movie trailers came out, I can’t stop playing it! Favourite game in the series is either Sonic on the Master System or Knuckles Chaotix, can’t decide but Sonic 2 is the 🐐 ❤️

One thing ill give sonic... out off every video game character hes probably the best to be made a movie.. like unlike most games he just works kinda kinda like an oldschool comic book character
The bonus stages and just the game in general are much easier if you just play as Sonic by himself, Tails only 1) Slows down the frame rate in the main levels and 2) Loses you coins in the bonus stages.
Great video! I recently tried to start a Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the 1st time, and on top, I tried to get all the Chaos Emeralds. I didnt enjoy it at all. Not only those stages suck, they break the flow of the game. Playing the game without caring Chaos emeralds made the game flow brillantly. Interesting huh?
7 year old me would absolutely want to square up with you on that Super Sonic slander. 😅 I can see how going out of your way to get those emeralds could be a hassle when, even if you're a complete pro (like my 7 year old self) getting all 7 of them and nailing each special stage on the first try is going out of your way and a bit of a time sink. I think alternatively, one could be in metropolis zone by the time they would be done collecting and getting super sonic by the end of Emerald Hill.

Either way, real glad I got to sit down with this again. I worried that maybe I came off as too negative in this video but I really did come to appreciate this game in a way I didn't when I was younger
I just beat the game now and I pretty much agree with everything. I don’t think I’m going to try getting the emeralds , they’re frustrating. But I really liked the games and honestly playing 1 and 2 back to back (for the first time with the goal of completion) made me appreciate the first game way more in all honestly. Tails is adorable tho :0

Love the video, Wayne. You really touch on some of what I love AND dislike about the game. I adore 2 but I hate completing it. The special stages are hard enough as just Sonic, let alone with Tails.
I'm curious if anyone else also has some issues with enemy placement in this game? It prioritizes speed more than 1 but enemy placement stops you dead in your tracks without (to me) giving warning of them a lot of the time. So it comes across as confused: does it want me to speed along or be conservative with speed? I feel like Sonic 1 actually does enemy placement better. Besides these two main complaints about 2 though, I adore the game and it totally deserves the praise.

@@GolfClash2718 That's a good point. Since then, my opinions are a bit more positive. I can get the first five emeralds pretty easily now but 6 and 7 are brutal. It does feel rewarding though. Especially compared to something like Forces.

But my favorite zones are prolly Hill Top-Mystic Cave, & Metropolis. Favorite music as well!
I don't think I've ever heard that criticism of Super Sonic! Really interesting take on the way his momentum works when intermingled with platforming. I do agree on the ending though. While I can defend it being a good character moment for Tails to see Super Sonic defy death and lay eyes on the hero he wants to become, I do think the regular ending is much better because of the stakes and the brotherhood on display. Tails is my favorite character in gaming and this ending really does it for me. He may not always see the best side of himself, but Sonic sees a courageous kid who will never let him down in the fight for good against Eggman. And that all starts with a speedy repair of the Tornado and a call to action to safely bring Sonic home for many more adventures to come.

I would assume that most people (originally) would play it through the standard way the first time and go for chaos emeralds as a later thing, and that's probably the way it was intended.
Edit: I've never got super sonic in this and don't mind. Maybe one day I will.
I have the game on my phone, it’s a great play
Sonic 2 is great. It’s greater emphasis on speed makes it instantly better than Sonic 1. Better zones, music, palette. Emerald Hill is a great zone. It’s just a little too short with a pathetic boss in the end. Chemical Plant is amazing. There’s some stop and wait segments but they aren’t too bad like the slow blocks and spikes in Marble. You can outright skip the infamous water segment either by good timing and speed or by going through the hidden path. The boss, I’ll be honest. No idea what he does. I cheese it. Aquatic Ruin is great fun. The first act I usually speed through but the second I like to pick which path I take. I like both. The top path is fast obviously but the water path can also be very speedy. It’s fun. The boss is cool too. Casino Night is good. Just don’t get sucked into gambling your rings lol. There are some slow moving blocks but nothing bad. The boss is a cool here too. Hill Top is alright. It’s probably the slowest zone with the seesaw and rising lava and the gondola platform things. I don’t hate it but I think this is the zone most like Sonic 1. Mystic Cave is one of the best zones in terms of music and aesthetic. Speed, platforming, secrets, all here. The biggest obstacles are probably those firefly badniks that are invulnerable when lit. I hate the boss those. Never been good at the dodging debris thing. That’s why I elect to go to Hidden Palace. The boss is easier(I know some struggle on figuring out how to attack him at first). The zone is very cool and like the other two water levels you never have to touch the water. Oil Ocean is one of my favorites. I can understand the dislike for Labyrinth. It’s not very Sonic-y in design. But Oil Ocean has so many routes, so much speed, fun platforming! What’s to hate? The seahorse badniks aren’t so bad. They only really get me I the opening of act 2. The boss is cool on a first playthrough but then it becomes a waiting game on later playthroughs unless you have Super Sonic and everyone that isn’t 8 should have him by this point imo(for like Origins and the mobile port). Metropolis is kinda bad. It’s got speed and secrets and fast platforming. All that great Sonic stuff that Sonic 2 has been really good with up to this point and still. But the enemy placement…only zone where enemy placement is an issue for me. I have noticed that sometimes enemies like the green ones don’t have their slicers(that the name?) in the mobile port when you’re the normal character which is good but the crabs are still a pain. Tails can make the starfish trigger sooner if he is with you. All that said, I don’t really hate Metropolis tho I still consider it bad. The reason is because Super Sonic evens things out. The boss is fine. Nothing to say about it. Sky Chase is boring. No matter what you do, you cannot make it go any faster. Wing Fortress is fun. I like that you can skip parts of the level and even if you play through it normally, not too hard. Super Sonic really makes this a breeze because he can jump over everything and got right to the end. The laser boss is ok. Silver/mecha/whatever Sonic is easy. He’s an absolute joke. The Death Egg robot is easy if you aren’t needlessly making it harder for yourself. Just never get behind it and never hit him as he’s marching unless you’re a pro and have precise timing. I’m not a pro so I don’t bother. I just get one free hit in as the robot comes from the ground. Hit him when he stops marching. Hit him twice when he lands. Hit him again after he shoots his arms out. Hit him again when he lands again(for some reason I can’t do it twice). Rinse and repeat. Should take two cycles before he’s down. Not hard and/or tedious if you don’t want it to be. The endings are both great. I know many like the normal ending because Tails saves Sonic and yea it’s more impactful. But I like the Super Sonic one too. The fact Tails even showed up for his friend just in case is still meaningful. The special stages are fun imo. Well, the enhanced versions. The half pipe is simple and mildly challenging. It’s not too hard at all. And with multiple checkpoints and the ability to restart in later versions, there’s no excuse not to have Super Sonic. Even if one isn’t going out of their way to stop at every checkpoint, you should have all emeralds before Oil Ocean at the the latest. Overall Sonic 2 is a great game and like any sequel should, it improves on the foundation that the first game set in every single way.

I mean, SUper Sonic is not something you should do on a first run of the game, it is a form of "New Game Plus", where you don't even know what those emeralds do until you collect them all.

Ehhh that’s bit of an L take on Super Sonic. The super form is meant to be a reward for a skilled player. He handles differently but he’s also able to run the levels differently. You’re complaining about an optional risk-reward feature and it kinda sounds like you just need to get better to appreciate it, similar to an FS game.

Even in FS games like Bloodborne, getting good at the game is its own reward and makes the gameplay feel more fun to play. Playing the special stages and as Super Sonic just aren't fun to me.
That said, most if not all of my problems with how Super Sonic is handled were fixed in Sonic 3 & Knuckles so I really don't think this rebuttal holds a lot of water, sorry
