This game... it really stays with you once you've played it. I first played it 15 years ago, but replaying it as an adult I discovered so much nuance in the writing that went waaaaaay over my head as a teenager and I fell in love with it all over again. KOTOR 2 is proof to me that video games can indeed be considered art. I sincerly hope Mr. Avellone and the Obsidian crew from back then knows just how much people actually love this game.

      @kisham Před 4 lety +6

Same here: as a teenager i was blown by the scope and themes of the game. I replayed it when i was 33 and man, what an experience. Not only i found the game even more appealing, but with the sith lords mod that recovers the uninplemented game data, the game took its final form and now is a masterpiece, both in storytelling and caharacter development, and its deconstruction of the force is probably the most interesting SW material out there.

I always thought that wanting to destroy the Force was supposed to be one possible conclusion Kreia reaches. KotoR 2 was planned to have multiple endings that were very different. And there are other plot threads set up throughout the game. If you go light side, Kreia will try to help you build a better Jedi Order that learns from the mistakes of the old. She also exposes Atris to prevent her from spreading corrupted Jedi teachings. We also know that there was a planned ending where Kreia dies and Atris becomes Darth Traya. But because they didn't have enough time to finish the game, they went with that ending.
One of Kreia's most important teachings is that every idea must be challenged. If anyone ever follows a philosophy without question and allows it to become dogma, it will lead to stagnation and death. Many of Kreia's schemes are her testing her ideas against the old teachings of the Jedi and the Sith. The Jedi Exile is so important to her because the Exile is the counter-point to the Force. The galaxy has only known of life with the Force, the Exile offers the chance of creating a new perspective, new ideas based on life without the Force.
I think that originally, Kreia was supposed to reach different conclusions about the Force based on decisions you made in the game. She may decide that the Force need to be destroyed, she may decide that there needs to be something to challenge the power of the Force, she may decide that there needs to be a new way of interacting with the Force.

Even if they had proper dev time, a lot still would have been cut. This way of redeeming Kreia does seem like it would have been satisfying though, especially if she revealed that she was a Sith and you convinced her that the Jedi could be salvaged. There are bound to be stories and options that will be thought up in a creative mind and written down as possibilities, but simply can't be incorporated due to it not making a succinct enough story for a video game to tell.

There is an interesting dynamic that I feel was always a focus of exploration in most mythology, SW included, and the Kotor games perhaps most acutely - The idea that "what you own ends up owning you". Expressed most directly via the criminal organizations, and Sith, but also via the Jedi in the prequel trilogy.
What I find compelling about Kreia is that she seems to be the vehicle for the second verse of this idea - The idea that one becomes whatever they define themselves in opposition to. By defining herself, directly and completely, in opposition to "the force", she becomes a manifestation of the very aspects of that "entity" which she so abhors. As such, she may be even more profoundly tragic than Scion. I find myself wondering if, for all her wisdom, she ever saw that she became the expression of the detached, manipulative, control which she so detests.

You gain more XP when using Kreia. Also, since my favorite is to play light sided female, I give my PC all the light side buffs (master valor, speed, battle meditation etc) and I combine these buffs with the dark side offensive powers that I give Kreia. Force scream or plague + master battle med and valor in combat is an absolutely deadly combo. Since I build Kreia to have very high wisdom and she has no Force point penalty to using dark side powers, I found I don't even need to give her a weapon, as she just sits back and dominates with force powers. In short, Kreia is awesome.

I think the greatest failing that both KOTORs fall prey to is trying to have a nuanced opinion of the clash of Jedi, Sith, and other factions in the galaxy... wrapped up inside a very constrictive morality system. There are only ever really two options without that much nuance at all... That said, in my most recent playthrough, I actually did the whole game while staying within the grey. And I did it without coming off as a morally bipolar maniac. Best playthrough ever.

Recently replayed these games after having done so about 10 years ago on Xbox. I definitely appreciate more of the games now since I'm older. They still held up pretty solidly and the mods only added to that. I agree with your views on character interactions and bonds between both games. More often than not, I'd always have at least one force user and maybe Mission (in the first) or T3 (in the second). It just became too beneficial to have force users. Though, when you were presented with stories from the other characters, it really did add value to their existence.
All in all, your videos are probably some of the only ones that I can sit through start to finish and enjoy every second of it. You always do a good job!

My favorite part of KOTOR 2, other than when Kreia admits that she hates the Force, is that she LOVES the Jedi Exile. In the whole game, everyone starts fawning over you because you seem to enchant everyone you meet. You DO suck people towards yourself, not in a Mary Sue way, but because you don't listen to the Force and attract people to you by the person you are. Your companions love you, Darth Sion loves you, and who knows, maybe Nihilus loved you too although you couldn't hear what he was saying. And then KREIA, our title villain, is unable to resist loving you too. It was just crazy to hear that come from her mouth so openly. It's like if Palpatine admitted that he loved Luke at the very end for how brave and strong he was. No one can resist who you are, if it's you who are pulling people in, and not "fate." To let go of the Force is to become who you truly are.

Sion is Lord of Pain, and pain is rooted in attachment, with Sith being the ultimate embodiment of selfishness. Sion is I think better meant to show how selfishness and the dark side causes suffering and ironically the suffering of the self, though his name also alludes to the fact that he suffers because he wants what he can’t have - approval and power. He’s a dramatic foil to the Exile, in the sense that he thinks in ways the canon Exile doesn’t or wouldn’t.

I love how people still talk of this game and not entirely just echo each others' talking points. It is a testament to the depth of the story. I disagree that if there were to be just one Star Wars story, this would be it. It's still a deconstruction and doesn't work in vacuum. As for KotOR 3, I'm not that sure I would even want this at this point, considering the track record of people who hold the license. There's also the MMO and books muddying that canon and dividing the fanbase. A remaster of 1 and 2 that'd also restore the 2 to all its intended glory would be a safer bet. The restoration mod is amazing, but there is only so much the modders can do.

I always just shrugged Kreia off as a kid because it was obvious she was a "bad guy". Now, I think her philosophy just seems far too nebulous for anyone but her to understand.
While all of the non-droid characters were highly compelling and dynamic, I found Bao-dur on paper to be exceptional. Due to the Iridorian-Iridonian script error he's supposed to be the same as the bloodthirsty mercenary on Manaan (they also speak with the same restrained cadence), but Malachor V was so horrific it left him a quiet, shell-shocked, broken mess. I think he needed some main screen time to really shine, but partying with him and Mandalore were some of the most interesting interactions in the game - the exile's former worst enemy and former closest partner.

As far as sequels go, KOTOR II, even in its unfinished state (including all the benefits the Restored Content mod gives you), was a fucking dream and a phenomenal game in its own right. Loved your videos on the two KOTOR games and the conversation you had with Chris Avellone. Just a damn shame it was a giant set-up for the KOTOR III that never got made and that we will never get, only having our headcanons to resort to since the Revan novel and SWOTR were awful and I reject them as conclusions and continuations of anything to do with these games. Much like PS: T, I find that one of the reasons I love this game a lot is because of how satisfying and rewarding it is to return to them after a given period of time has passed, attaining a new perspective and finding you now have different answers to the same questions you were asked when you last played them. It's one of the things that truly defines a great work of art and KOTOR II is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I like how important the core theme of trauma it is to the game, it makes it really unique, especially when talking about Star Wars media.

My favorite level in the game is when we get to play as HK-47 in the HK factory level, that is so much fun. it was cut out of the original release, but the restoed mod put it back in.
Back when I first played this game I couldn't remember Kelly Hu's name, I thought "I've heard that voice before a few times" I can't really imagine Vias marr having any other voice now. But Kristoffer Tabori has the best voice ever, he voices HK-47 and 50.

Life and the force are two sides of the same coin, people having separation from it, or not being sensitive to it, wouldn't make it go away. People simply wouldn't be able to blame it for their own actions. or attempt to appease it's supposed in vain insignificance of mortal men. All the cruelty and suffering of the world would remain.

I think you gave Kraya a very altruistic motivation. I never got the impression she was moved to stop the suffering of others. I interpreted her very differently. Do you remember her speech about the beggar on Narshadar? Where she insinuates that any action may cause undo suffering and thus attempting to aid others is ultimately pointless? She is not saying that helping the begger is evil, she is saying there is no good and evil.
Ultimately do not believe she thinks the Force is evil, she made it fairly clear she is looking beyind good and evil (Her philosophy seems directly inspired by Neitzsche). The Jedi and Sith concern them selves with good and evil and are blinded by that in Krayas eyes. She is concerned with power. The Force has power over her and she hates it for that. She does not wish to be ruled over by the Jedi, or the Sith and certainly not the Force. She wishes to be free and the price of that freedom is irrelevant. She wishes to be an Übermensch and can not be while controled by an out side force.
For the Record, I am no saying she is correct, I am saying this is what she believes. Frankly I still have a hard time seeing the player character as a living threat to the force. The player not only continuously grows stronger in the Force but awakens it in others. If we accept what the Jedi council members said as absolutely true with out question then we are the Death of the force, but if we accept what the Jedi council said with out question then we learned absolutely nothing from Kraya.
Ultimately I do not thing Kraya was neutral in the force, at all. As much as she wanted to be free of the Forces influence her hatred made her a tool of the dark side. Her path was entirely self destructive, she wishes to be free of the Force and then what? Be a blind old woman on a dead world? Can life even exist in the Star Wars universe with out the Force? Does Kraya even know or care if it can? She would be as free as man who locked himself in a cage and threw away the key. Ironically the only form of freedom is to embrace the light side of the Force. A Purpose in life is not a cage. Refuse any restraints on your self and you are ironically restraining yourself. Choosing the Path you wish is liberating even if it restrains you from every other path.

You're all alone, cut off from help, the force and there is this constant sense of being watched. Everything seems dead and the tension builds and increases along with the dread, then there is an epic escape with a homicidal maniac on your tale. It is an excellent opening.

THIS, I never realized the facility was so disliked. The grisly tension of being stranded and stalked by what looks like a zombie sith is something you can’t get in any Star Wars canon. Horror should play some part as the sw galaxy can be a very dark and scary place at times. It’s the courage to stray from our expectations of what so characteristically is Star Wars, that produces some of its best fiction.
TLDR- Star Wars is cool when it has mystery and tension, doesn’t always have to be about red vs blue
