Yup. Sub-Zero is Chinese and ninja or “shinobi” are Japanese. Scorpion and Takeda are technically the only ninjas in the games.
No one remembers that the original Sub-Zero was in MK1 to assassinate Shang Tsung. The younger Sub-Zero was in MK2 to complete the mission his older brother failed due to going "missing" (presumed dead by the Lin Kuei).
Retconned in the new timeline because the writers are incompetent.

Yeah, my understanding is that the Lin Kuei aren’t ninjas simply because they’re Chinese, whereas the Shirai Ryu are Japanese. Makes the lore pretty murky when you go back to why they were originally ‘rival clans’ in the first place haha.
Just like in real history- the concept of “ninja” or in Japanese record “shinobi” is the term they seem to use,but they were samurai who learned Chinese assassin tactics. Just like Karate comes from Chinese white crane kung fu and southern shaolin style teachers that moved to Okinawa.Ancient China has had a huge influence on Japan even though they will hate to admit it.
Ninjas in real life always in all black when in Mortal Kombat they all wear different colored outfits lol. Noob Saibot looks the most similar to a real life ninja assassin (well he used to anyway)

"Ninjas" would wear camouflage suits less than 1 in 10 times such as when infiltrating an enemy castle or acting as saboteurs etc, and in this case their suits would most likely be dark blue because it blends better at night. The rest of the time, especially when they were acting as spies, they were trained to be able to impersonate all kinds of people from samurai, to peasants, to merchants, to monks, so as to be able to do their job unnoticed. This applied both to men operatives as well as the women kunoichi who were trained differently from the men, in order to fulfill womanly roles. Finally there is no clear distinction between "samurai" and "ninja/shinobi" as a ninja was simply a samurai trained in espionage/assasination/sabotage tactics. Hell Hattori Hanzo, one of the most famous ninja was known for charging openly and fiercely into battle and favouring the spear above all weapons!

Just a heads up in the old time-line; before being retconned, it was stated that Rain may have been a brief Lin Kuei member at one point. He is like Shujinko or Sareena; and much like Tremor in the Shiri-Ryu; before joining the Black Dragon, doesn't actually do anything noteworthy to the overall story, but is worth an honorable mention. Anyway I've always dug Cyrax, but he wasn't going anywhere until the new time-line and Sektor is opposite where he was good in the ORIGINAL time-line, but is USELESS now, right after MK9. Cyber Sub-zero just stole Smoke's ORIGINAL story and got changed back into Sub-zero. Smoke had some potential in MK 9, but became a worthless jobber revenant. Stick my boy back with Noob and become a serious threat again. Without Smoke Noob; at least in the NEW time-line is trash.🗑 Done wrong. The whole Lin Kuei is TRASH 🗑 in Kronika's new era. NRS washed their BEST faction. Made them jobbers. Made the Black Dragon look competent. The Black Dragon is the Team Rocket of MK. I don't mean Team Rocket. I mean Jessie and James Team Rocket. Let THAT sink in for a bit 🤔🙄

The canon members of the Lin Kuei are Kuai Liang, Frost, Cyrax, Smoke, Sektor, and Bi Han for both timelines. Bi Han is now Brotherhood of Shadow, Smoke, Cyrax, and Sektor are confirmed kia. Frost i believe joined Kronika in MK11, so basically Kuai Liang is the only major Lin Kuei member currently in canon. In the Malibu series of comics Hydro was introduced, but those comics are now considered non-canon meaning any characters created (Hydro, Those metal armed spec forces dudes, and anyone else) are no longer canon. Hydro did make an appearance as the cyber ninja Cyrax and Sektor fight in MK Legacy season 1, but hes killed in that too.
Tundra isnt a seperate character from any of the movies, games, or comics but is just Kuai Liangs old codename

Hydro used to be Kuai Liang( Current Subzero) but later they retconned him to be the friend and fellow Lin Kuei member of Bai Han/Noob Saibot.
Nah, Kuai Liang was Tundra and after Bi Han died he took the name Sub Zero to honor him. Hydro was a completely separate character that isnt canon, seeing as he was only in the Malibu MK comics and MK Legacy. Hope this clears stuff up
