Advancing with Watercolor: "From the Rooftops"

- This week I am in the field - up on a roof to be specific. The video is part demonstration and partly narration . I want to show what I “see” in this crazy scene I also want to introduce a few methods/ tricks to help you sketch your subject with a brush
Restrain your drawing - a few major lines, angles…no windows :)
Use a restricted Palette to do downplay color desicions
An advantage is we “see” our subject in lights and darks
Use one brush for most of the painting - a larger brush will give you pause to think more about the stroke you want to create…
And leave a few things to be done back at the studio….

It was almost like being there with you all. A scene like this is, in my opinion, the greatest challenge in painting as we are naturally confused by the multiple shapes that we see. If I could simplify this, I could paint anything. I must watch it again. Thanks Gary, inspiring as ever.
Thanks, welcome back long time no see in youtube missed your painting
Helpful tips-thank you!
I can feel this painting
Painting from the rooftops was a great change of perspective! Thank you Gary and Frankie!
Very nice. Thank you very much sir for the demonstration.
Спасибо за ваши уроки, давненько не выходили новые видео, как вы поживаете, как здоровье! Учусь по вашим видео, очень нравятся сюжеты и стиль рисования!
Great video, thx for posting
So much to learn and put into practice here. Even if it's simplifying and reducing to contrasting values using a monochrome approach, that in itself requires a lot of skill. I love the idea of one focal point, one colour, one reference etc. If anything can get me to stop overworking my paintings, it's this approach here.
The idea of the painting speaking to you was quite profound. Thank you.
Hi Gary -your one -colour testpaintings , they are as beautiful as your colorpaintings- verry nice - greatings from Belgium
many thx - I feel the same

Another fab piece Gary, was watching an excellent video by Chien Chung Wei, where you ever in his company, there's a guy in one of his vids could be your twin!
Anyway Fabulous piece yet again.
Thanks again.
You are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing all these secrets!
There you go again Gary, reminding me of Alvero Castagnet. Awesome control of your medium. Thanks again for sharing your incredible talents. Great music also. So enjoyable!!!!!
I’ve always wanted to try a raised viewpoint city scape and now I’ve some tools to attempt it. Cheers Gary!

congratulations for the clarity of your lessons ... I would like to know which paper you used for this watercolor ... rough grain? CP? thanks for your suggestive shares
Jesus loves you! May God bless you :)
Controversial opinion - IMHO perhaps you could’ve stopped around 10 mins, I liked it more with less detail
