Why We Haven't Seen Stormtroopers in Andor (Yet)

  • I've seen some people questioning why the creators behind Andor have chosen not to include Imperial stormtroopers in the show yet. And I definitely do thing it's a choice and not some weird oversight. Here are the major reasons I see on why the people behind Andor are waiting to reveal the classic white armor on screen.

Ive noticed that the further we go into the series the more of those familiar elements of star wars we get. The second arc gave us TIE fighters. The next arc I think is gonna feature the star destroyer from the trailer. I like that slow build because it represents that Andor is becoming more and more involved in the greater Galaxy.

Little extra because I'm too lazy to edit but I think we've also went through this in the clone wars. We had arcs outside the normal cast. Take for example our adventures with Padme and the senate. Or how about Umbara where there were barely any battle droids and the clones fought other people for a change.
Hell the arc with the Bardatans staring Mace and Jar Jar honestly makes me think this is something thr Jedi would have done before the war. Helping solve an issue with a planet and investigating the dark side. It's not sith but it was the dark side

I love how they take a more personal approach instead showing a lot of immediately recognizable characters. Faceless stormtroopers aren't around because the story serves its purpose to show the reality of the galaxy during this time. It focuses on the people. Tamryn (sp?) being a former stormtrooper fits this theme as well as choosing to use more officers and Imperial army troopers instead of the forceful stormtroopers. On Aldhani the Empire seems to keep a open hand toward the Dhani people, while seemingly tightening their grip with the other hand. They trade customary pelts, engage in the culture by saying they'll provide a "watch zone" for the Eye in their plans for when they level the valley. I can't imagine this cloak and dagger policy would be made any easier having a legion of stormtroopers around. We've grown accustomed to seeing the might of the Empire which makes it easy to forget that the Empire was also very cunning and manipulative. Why risk sacrifice to any of your own resources and troops when you can take little by little with almost no objection from those you're taking from. The exploiting nature of the Empire is better served when you see all the people it affects. Those within as well as those being subjected. On one side you see people doing their jobs, keeping their heads down because that's all they know. Their loyalty to the Empire isn't because they believe in it. Its because they must do so to survive.

Don't forget, also... Stormtroopers, aside from being faceless and "nameless", are assigned TK numbers in place of their name. So, even if you DO hear of one referred to by his/her designation, it's always a number.
Andor is also going out of its way to show that the Empire, 15 years in, is already starting to rot from the inside, at its lowest levels. They are also humanizing its lowest ranks, where some of the worst of humanity will end up being displayed. The Empire was originally designed to be patterned after the Nazi regime. Where, at its lowest levels, the worst things actually happened. Sure, the leadership was giving out the orders to commit these crimes against humanity, but it was those who directly interacted with those they captured/tortured/maimed/killed where the worst things actually happened. Some, so barbarous it almost defies description.
But as was stated, it's easy to overlook the death of a nameless/faceless "person" behind a helmet, and not quite so easy to do so when you can see their face and/or(Andor... hehe.... yes, I intended the pun!) hear the name of them.

I think back to the Iron Squadron episode of Rebels when Mattin thought an arquitens was a star destroyer and seeing and destroying a real star destroyer was a “big boy” moment for him. The main symbols that we recognize as default imperial are only the ones used against the most dangerous of rebels and other enemies. You have to be a pretty “big boy” rebel for the empire to send a star destroyer or even just a detachment of stormtroopers to deal with you. Cassian is on his way to becoming a big boy rebel and as he rises, so will his enemies. As he goes after bigger and more important things, he will encounter bigger and more important threats.

By saying they were slowly undergoing a process of being phased out throughout the empires existence yet it being implied this process was never actually completed by the time the empire collapsed, it allows them to appear at any time in the empires existence while simultaneously explaining why we’ve seen stormtroopers in minor positions such as the rogue one prison.

Great discussion of the probable thematic reasons behind the choice! I definitely think Gilroy wanted to show the "faces" of the Empire more, and it enriches the themes of the show.
On the lore side, I love seeing a show, intentionally or not, lean into the fact that the Stormtrooper Corps was a relatively small service branch within the Imperial Army. It adds a lot more believability to the Empire's military structure. Army Troopers were common and Stormtroopers weren't. They showed up when something was sufficiently important. It even works in head-canon for most of the movies - defending the Empire's single most important installation and/or actively hunting a Rebel leader and the plans for said installation, deployed forces from Death Squadron (the taskforce sent to specifically hunt the Rebel Alliance), and Palpy's "best troops" defending the shield generator in a planned ambush. Star Wars Rebels undermines it a bit by using Stormtroopers everywhere, but ultimately Lothal became very important to the Empire.

In Andor there’s no big bad organized rebellion yet, so it makes sense that the empire wouldn’t field its “elite” troops at every single base in the galaxy. Once the rebellion really gets going it makes more sense that you see more storm troopers because there’s a higher threat level overall.

One of the things I love about the Solo movie was the use of Imperial infantry (mud troopers), the Infantry should be the dominant troops of the Empire (in numbers not skill), with the stormtroopers the elite special forces.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised there are so many SW fans who don't understand this series, they're used to a simpler story.

Andor has been scratching several itches for me that I wanted to see in Star Wars. Normal people, their home lives, what the average joe thinks of what’s going on, and what they do.
As a former retail employee I’ve wondered for a while what the retail business in Star Wars is like. What are the employees like? What do you have to deal with in a galaxy of so many different aliens, and types of people? So getting to see even an inkling of that, and getting to see aspects of the Empire be both humanized, and also made more terrifying works for me a lot. Andor might be my favorite Star Wars live action series so far. Not to talk down on a single other one, because I love them all. But Andor is something I’ve wanted to see the franchise tackle more on screen. I know we get bit of it in the books, and comics; but getting to see it on screen is great.

I, for one, really like how 'Andor' shows us more obscure elements of Star Wars. We get to see regular Imperial army soldiers, mundane workers, apartment complexes, flats, small towns, Coruscant airspeeders etc. This show is one of the best pieces of Star Wars media when it comes to worldbuilding in my opinion. It has a good balance between interesting storytelling known from the OT and amazing worldbuilding that shined in the prequels. The galaxy feels large and interesting again. It feels like a real lived-in place, not just a set built for a small group of main heroes. I hope that 'Andor' keeps expanding on the Star Wars lore instead of retreading old ground. Show me stuff I haven't seen before! We've all seen stormtroopers, star destroyers, imperial bases and AT-ATs. I want to see NEW STUFF! For example, did you guys ever wonder if the Empire or other factions had marine fleets? Wouldn't it be cool to see a submarine in Star Wars? Or something else. Maybe an Imperial mine. Or an Imperial slave camp. Anything other than generic Imperial hallways we've seen a million times before. What Star Wars needs is media that EXPAND on the original ideas and make the world feel BIGGER. Not constant references and nostalgia baits. Say what you want about the prequels but they really nailed this aspect. George didn't just rehash the same locations or the same aesthetic. He went out of his way to create new designs, new planets, new species and new adventures that are very distinct. Even SOLO needs to be commended for this. It's not a great movie overall but at least it introduced some cool new stuff. It showed us Imperial army troopers, range troopers, patrol troopers, an Imperial train etc. I wish Star Wars media used those elements more often and had the balls to introduce new stuff on their own.

I hadn't even really noticed the lack of stormtroopers - I think it's fine. I think it also fits the story where these characters are currently flying under the radar - they're on the fringe of the Empire's notice at the moment. And practically, in the last storyline, a big part of it involved the rebels in disguise. 4 full sets of armor would have been a lot harder to steal and having them in armor for that amount of time, where we couldn't see the tension on their faces or even be able to discern who was who, would not have worked.

I was 14 when the first Star Wars movie came out, and I have seen them all in their original run in cinemas. And Star Wars was changing since The Empire Strikes Back. When I first saw that, years after the first movie had come out, it looked and felt so different. And the Return of the Jedi felt even more different. Star Wars has been about changing, expanding and exploring different places in this universe since the very first movies!

Great analysis and video! An element that I appreciate with the lack of stormtroopers: The Empire has always had an allusion of Nazi Germany within it. That said, something that is easy to miss from WW2 - not all soldiers in German army were members of the Nazi party, that is, there were German soldiers who weren't Nazi SS. I find the presentation of local police/privatized soldiers transitioning to Imperial Soldiers also reminiscent of WW2 History. I also find it fitting that the Nazi SS troops were known as - stormtroopers. It seems to me that Andor is building towards this and providing that glimpse behind the veil, so to speak.

The analogy is the Roman Empire or other earth empires. Andor takes place in remote areas of the rim. The Empire appoints governors and uses local security forces as police. Stormtroopers are basically marines. You don't use heavy troopers except in warfare. When the Empire retaliates for the theft and turn up in a Star Destroyer, then we will most likely see Stormtroopers.

So get set everyone I think this series is building to something shocking and groundbreaking… competent and intimidating stormtroopers.

Andor has so far provided an interesting contrast with Rebels, which had stormtroopers all over the place, seemingly as the main infantry and patrol units. Do you suppose that is because Lothal was a higher-priority target, or are we maybe seeing a shift over time where the Empire has less and less faith in the standard army and so keeps expanding the ST Corps as a replacement (probably with a drop in quality)? Pre-Mor Corpos get replaced by Imperial Army that gets replaced by Stormtroopers, etc.

The lack of stormtroopers gave me the vibe that the two settings were un important to the empire. Like outposts not major bases. One way to look at it
We have to remember the Stormtroopers were the crack forces when things got hot and more often than not they are assigned to Star Destroyers which have mechanics on how they are deployed themselves between Sectors and Oversectors (Moffs and Grand Moffs)
    Meaning?
This could be a case of escalation which is playing:
    1) Local Corpos
    2) Imperial Army
    3) Imperial Navy with a detachment of Stormtroopers
    4) Oh look the SSD Executor with Lord Vader onboard
Given we still have an episode with an Imperial Star Destroyer to show up no doubt where there is an ISD there is what was it 5,000 Stormtroopers to go with it?

As large as the Stormtrooper corp is, they simply do not have the numbers to be everywhere, all the time. They are also considered shock troops or elite, thus more then a few back water posts would be the purview of the Imperial Army. So too, would worlds where major ground campaigns are going. Stormtroopers would and do see deployments, but would usually be, once again, to spear head a very important attack, to strike at vital targets, or to step in when the local military has lost it's edge or has become 'less then reliable'. Or so says, The Imperial Sourcebook.

Making these familiar aspects of the Empire that we often see as cannon fodder into legitimate threats is one of the things I love about the side stories in Star Wars. One of my biggest issues with the movies (The sequels in particular) was that they felt they had to make everything bigger for us to care. "Oh, look. It's the Death Star, but BIGGER! And now it's the Death Star, but the size of a planet! Now there's THOUSANDS of planet-killing spaceships! And the Emperor is back, but with BIGGER Force Lightning!" Meanwhile, my favorite episodes of The Mandalorian were about fighting ONE AT-ST and fighting ONE Tie Fighter and a single squad of Stormtroopers.

I think it's a good decision to show the slow movement of the imperial oppression. As we see in Bad Batch the Empire immediately began shifting gears towards the conscript storm troopers, but they were still soldiers. The use of more standard troops in these earlier days of the rebellion will serve to show the escalation of force. I have a feeling the planetary retaliation plans will see the deployment of these forces en mass. People need to remember the original trilogy (even rogue 1) are several years into open rebellion, of course the Empire has stormtroopers every where. To be honest, I've always felt that the storm troopers probably started getting lower quality gear and training as the rebellion wore on, as more ordinary soldiers got transferred for the shock and awe factor.

  • @depreseo
    @depreseo Před rokem +2

I've not minded actually. As you've said, it allows us to see the faces of the empire, the Individual soldiers, officer, techs, etc. And has allowed us a glimmer into their humanity (at the end of episode 6 when both the army troopers and the natives are just staring mesmerised at the eye) but also showing how their paths in life have lead them to being part of this imperial machine. As was the intention of the rebels episode "through imperial eyes" we finally see and understand why regular people would become part of this regime. Stormtroopers, by contrast, do not have the same effect. They represent the faceless power of the empire - taking that remaining humanity seen in the imperial troops in episodes 5 and 6, and processing it through the imperial machine again and again untill all that's left is hundreds and thousands if human shaped figures all sharing the same motionless face. Thematically facing down the corpos and the imperial army (deffinantky an escalation from one to the other) is still facing down "the people of the empire". Facing stormtroopers is "facing THE empire".
In-universe we also know that the stormtrooper corp ls was only part of the imperial millitary machine with the imperial army and navy also having their own dedicated troopers for missions - such as the imperial army seen here and in solo (dubbed "mud-troooers" as they fought on the front line in the trenches during the wars if imperial expansion). Even in the first new-canon thrawn book stormtroopers were only deployed to capture thrawn after the future grand-admiral had tackled with the navy-troopers present on the planet. Stormtroopers are assigned to key facilities and bases for security, such as ISD's, production centres / factories such as Lothal and Corellia, and primary bases such as the death Star, or possibly the main base that the TIE's were deployed from in episode 6 of andor. Other imperial facilities likely didn't need such security, so just as with the base seen here which wasn't the main imperial airfield, security was handled by other imperial forces - in this case the imperial army. So whilst the crew of the ghost in starwars rebels were always bumping into the old bucket heads because Lothal was being developed into a production site for imperial war machines and later the TIE defender (and also because in animation it is cheeper to reproduce one model Vs creating multiple differnet models with individual faces) Andor has yet to hit an imperial target which is that "big" or significant YET! Now that news of his and his groups heist has reached corousant the baby gloves are off, and the terror of the elite storm trooper corp is likely to be felt.

Stormtroopers represent the Empire in it's ugliest form, which we haven't really seen yet in Andor. We've seen the results of oppression, but not the oppression itself mostly. Stormtroopers aren't scary because they're more dangerous than an army trooper, but their facelessness allows the empire to show it's true nature.
If I had to guess what the first scene with stormtroopers would be, I suspect it will involve them slaughtering a group of defenseless people, similar to how in ANH we saw them massacre the crew of the Tantive IV or (offscreen) kill the Jawas and the Lars.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see Karn become a stormtrooper or at least work with them very closely.

I remember prior to the prequels reading official Star Wars material that made the Stormtrooper core sound like an elite group of the Imperial Army brought in only for certain situations. As if they were rare but then even in Legends this sorta just fell away as the prequels came out. That's why I assumed the Solo writers decided to go back to this by having a battle with mostly green Imperial Army troopers.
