You don't loosen the pulley. The fish is strong. So the place where the hook enters the fish's mouth becomes bigger. And when the fish moves its head right and north strongly, The hook is freed from her mouth. You have to tire the fish. By relaxing the pulley.
I have fished that same spot. We had a snapper in burly that dwarfed my mates 34lbr. We had a shot at it but dropped hook. 30 years of rock fishing I'll never forget that fish!

I keep a metal nail file to quickly sharpen my bigger hooks! Especially the big ones on my big lures, I'd rather sharpen then than replace! Sharp hooks, friend!

I think treble hooks would increase the hookup rate but as a downside they do more damage to the fish

Nothing wrong with the plug, everything wrong with the hooks, too open, lacks penetration. Change out hook type and you’re on. You will stick and hold occasionally but lots of misses. How beautiful your area is.

The light setup I'm using a Daiwa Phantom Hyper Lt 4000D with a Daiwa TD Zero rod, I like the set up man! Heavy setup is Daiwa Saltiga 18000-H reel and a Daiwa Saltiga PE10 rod

About the hook ups and pulling hooks, although I'm a fan of singles in stickbaits, having a treble in the belly some times helps, and big sticks normally don't mind them...

That was a crazy session! Do you sharpen your hooks Joe? I have never seen pull hooks usually if you connect their yours unless they rub you off.
I usually switch them out for new ones when they blunten, but I do have a hook file that I sometimes do a quick touch up. I think sometimes you just get unlucky with the hook set placement

I use Daiwa Saltiga PE10 mainline and 200lb leader, there's some big fish in the upcoming episodes 🤫
