I bought a tacoma TRD pro for my grandmother and she loves the interior because it reminds her of when she bought her first toyota corolla.

Since I have owned both a 16 TRD Off Road and a 2021 Rubicon Gladiator I got perspective. The Jeep is WAY more comfortable, the sound system from Jeep/ Alpine is much better than the JBL Tacoma. Interior is no comparison Jeep by far but again its a much more expensive truck. Gas mileage goes to the Tacoma the Gladiator is more thirsty. I believe the Tacoma is faster (gas motor to gas motor) in a quarter mile run , BUT right off the line I think the Jeep is quicker to say 30 mph. Tacoma's 3.5 is weak down low until it spools up then it gets going not a fan of the motor I actually liked my Toyota FJ's 4.0L better than the newer 3.5L.
Gladiator is way expensive I could have bought a full size truck for the same price. However, you do get Dana 44 axles a crawler transfer case (Rubicon) and front locker (Rubicon).
Personally, I think Jeep needs to put a rear locker in the Willy's Edition. Yes the Mojave has that but price is the same as Rubicon and not everyone needs to "jump their truck" with Mojave suspension. Willy's with just a rear locker and a much lower price point would compete well with Tacoma TRD or Ford FX Ranger.
I think resale is still unknown. Yes, Tacoma re-sale is amazing I bought mine in 16 for 39k drove it for 5 years and sold it for 35K HOWEVER, looking on craigslist Jeep Rubicon (Jeeps) hold their value to crazy levels as well.. Matter of fact research has shown the Jeep Rubicon Jeeps are actually a little better than Tacoma in resale so if that applies to Gladiator especially Rubicon Gladiator we will have to see long term.

The 3rd gen pentastar is tried and true and supposed to be every bit the high mileage engine of the good OLD 3.5 Toyota utility engine. I’ve had both and anecdotally the Toyota has let me down. Had 2 bad from the factory (Mexico made trucks with bad milling in the block, leaking oil out the back of a marred runner hole, replaced with one with a similar problem) and one is making a horrible tick that “there’s no fix for at this moment”. At least with the Lexus version they cover the noisy bits in foam.
Which also let me down in the middle of the western desert with 8 people on board with 2 failed coil packs that took 2 months to replace.

I also bought a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee altitude package 4x4 for my wife in December of 2018, and it gave is a lot of problems, to the point that started leaking oil and the check engine turned on, I bought it brand new and exchanged it at 21k miles after 2 years and 11 months, we took really good care of it and it still gave us problems even with really but really low miles on it. This is just 1 review dude! I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi V8 with 154k. Best vehicle Ive owned and guess what limited lifetime powertrain and engine warranty. Toyota has produced some real lemons over the years too! Problem with Toyota is they nickel
and dime you for every little thing ie leather, nav, etc. Grand Cherokees are considered a luxury SUV for the most part. What compares to a in Toyota’s lineup? 4Runner? They have been horrible vehicles except for the newer models but option for option are $5k+ more than a JC. Toyota reliability has slipped. They f’d up with the FJ. Jeep has blown them out of the water every year for oh…..since the FJ40 days lol. Ford f’d up on the new Bronco too! Jeep just keeps killing the off-road market!! A Tacoma and a Jeep, even a Gladiator are in different leagues. The fact that Toyota doesn’t offer a diesel engine is just stupid. Now if International brought back the Scout Jeep might piss their pants a little.

I have the 2021 JT Mohave with manual transmission. Manual transmission is unfairly getting a bad rap IMO. It took me a couple of hundred miles to get used to the clutch and its bite point, and the shifting but once you get used to it, I get the same performance as the automatic provides but with lots more fun. And for $2000 less. The manual transmission is Aisin on the Wrangler and Gladiator that coincidentally is one of the Toyota group of companies.

Gladiator can fit 35s from the factory (and a spare too) and 37s with 2” lift. Tacoma needs a 6” lift (or substantial trimming with less lift) for 35s. Had a 2021 gladiator. It became an electrical nightmare. Unreliable, in the shop once a week the last month I owned it. The dealership was throwing parts at it. None of which fixed it. Just an all around piece of shit. Just traded it in towards a 23 Tacoma trd off road. I have to say the trd off road is way more capable off road than the gladiator sport s. Jeeps customer service is absolutely awful. Also the trd was 12,000 dollars less that the gladiator. Moral to the story I’d rather walk than drive a P.O.S. Jeep ever again. The only part I miss about the jeep was the seat was a little more comfortable.

That was also my complaint with my 16 Tacoma, the transmission was ALWAYS searching for gears. So far 1.5 years in and no problems with my Gladiator. Toyota back in the day was known for reliability and I still think they are good, but not what they once were. I could tell a difference from my 08 FJ to 16 Tacoma as far as build in interior the newer Tacoma felt cheap.

The 3rd gen Tacoma really isn't that good. The engine is a turd, the transmission is junk, and they are living off of old reliability credit. I test drove a new one that overheated immediately. My friend has one that the blower fan exploded in the dash. Nobody can speak for gladiator reliability but it rides better, has more interior space, tows more, is faster, and aside from breakover angle is more capable off road. This is coming from someone who had 2 4Runners.

What are you talking about??. I own a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4 fully equipped, bought it brand new, till now it has 12k and has never give me any problems. I also had a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee altitude package 4x4 that I bought for my wife brand new, it gave me nothing but problems, we exchanged at 21k miles because it was already leaking oil and the check engine turned on. We took really good care of it but still gave us problems, just imagine at 21k and 2 years and 11 months, we don't drive a lot, but at that milage and we bought it brand new???, Come on???. We end it up exchanging it for a 2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited Night Shade Edition and we love it so far, and we have learned to never buy a FCA vehicle ever in our life!!!!!!!.

The gladiator is still a better vehicle than the Tacoma sorry.
