Dear Danica. I’ve been watching your videos since my diagnosis 5 years ago. You’ve taught me so much! I like that you don’t pretend that this is an easy job that we T1’s have and actually share your ‘imperfect’ struggles with us. Thank you for all you do to help us manage this condition!

I did this too. I had just started Tresiba (7 units)...wasn't sure how it was working...woke up at 3:30am my BG's 330's....I gave a manual correction, was just going to do 1/2 to maybe 1 unit correction (I'm very insuln sensitive). I was feeling so sick from the high, half asleep lethargic, too...I injected and after I pushed plunger on syringe realized (thank god) that was not 1/2 a unit. Thank god I didn't go back to sleep. Started downing glucose tabs probably at least 15 tablets, got in car drove myself to ER, only 3 miles away. sat there outside for a minute, double arrows down on CGM, eating more glucose...by the time I got to triage ER my BG's were 30 and still dropping. Orange juice given while the ER team pushing IV glucose, asking me, "How are you still talking?" I was there half the day next day, just kept dropping, they made me eat a turkey sandwich, too. I probably gave myself 3 units, it dropped me 300 points. I thought I'd be sky high too with IV glucose + orange juice + at least 15 - 16 glucose tabs + huge turkey sandwich...only ended up at around 250. Scariest thing I've ever been thru. If I hadn't realized it, and just gone back to sleep I would have died. It still horrifies me and has given my PTSD everytime I bolus, wondering if I gave correct amount, questioning every bolus injection. Why I'm starting on InPen, at least I can see what I've actually done. I vowed never to take insulin in middle of night...but I did it a few weeks ago and drove myself to ER, just waited outside and was able to come back up. I HATE THIS DISEASE, IT IS SO SCARY, HORRIFYING TO ME.

That is such a scary thing! My son did that a little over a year ago when he was ten. He decided to dose himself on his own and didn’t pay enough attention to what he was doing bc he was more worried about getting back to his XBox. He bolused himself for over 100g instead of the 10-15g he ate right before bedtime. He didn’t have a CGM at the time and dropped in his sleep but it just so happened that his dad was still awake and heard him moaning right as he was starting to seize! I had to administer a Glucagon shot for the first time after almost 9 years of being diabetic. His sugar was in the teens with a considerable amount of insulin still on board. Had his dad not been home that night (he was working out of town a lot at that time), we could have lost him. Looking into my sons glazed over eyes with pupils blown and his whole body convulsing trying to get the Glucagon in was the single most terrifying 10-15 minutes of my life!

Before I was on the pump, I had lost my insulin pen so I used a syringe (which I hadn’t done in awhile). I gave myself 100 units of insulin instead of 10 😬😅 But thankfully I realized it, drank a bunchhhhh of soda, and never dipped below 80.

Funnily enough I have the Tandem pump too and just upgraded to control IQ a month ago. A few days later right before bed I heard a beep in my pocket and luckily I checked realizing with horror that it had just delivered 20 units.
I cant be sure if it was a pocket bolus (which is the only disadvantage of having a touch screen) or if I had incorrectly keyed 20 units when I did 20 grams of carbs a few minutes earlier. Either way its something we all need to be vigilant about.
I went into hospital as a precaution since it is a very large dose for me especially at night but after 4 hours in the ER there was no big dip. (the fed me lots of carbs and just monitored me). I was panicking to be honest but I felt better knowing that IV glucose was on hand in case of a huge drop in BG.
The next day I lowered the max bolus to around the max I realistically ever take which is 14. It can be inconvenient when it wont let me bolus for a big meal and I then have to go through the settings to allow it but at least I cannot make a 20 unit bolus again.
It would be great in the next update if they let you set a maximum bolus based upon your basal timings. This way at 12pm you could set a maximum bolus of say 5 units but in the day when you are eating you could set it at 15 units.

THANK YOU for this story. I just now injected my FIASP (fast-acting) instead of my BASAGLAR (long-acting) at my normal Basaglar rate. So 32 units of fast-acting instead of long-acting. I will need to eat about 10x my normal carbs to cover this. Fortunately, the fast acting will be absorbed within three hours, I'm awake, I caught myself immediately after injecting (OH NOOOOOO!) and I'm wearing a DEXCOM with will alarm me if I get distracted. On the down side, I'm on a very low carb diet, have almost no high-carb foods in the house, and...yeah. I'm relying on sipping canned evaporated milk to get me though this. I'm sorry that we're all human and make mistakes, but it's kind of reassuring, too. We're all human and make mistakes.

Boy howdy, yes! Our daughter several years ago grabbed the wrong pen for her Lantus shot at night. I can't remember now how many units she was doing of long-acting, but it was probably 25+. That was super fun. Ugh. We ended up using Glucagon because she made herself sick trying to consume so many carbs that she threw it all up and then we had no idea what still remained active in her body. Thank God, it kicked in and it was all good--so far (7 years now) we've managed to stay out of the ER--but she was shaking and so lethargic it was scary. The only time something that bad has happened, and we keep her pens in two separate places and she has to show us which one she's got in her hand before she administers it.

I noticed that you have a slightly different style of case on your Tandem pump. Could you give us the info about it, like it's name, where you got it from, price and anything else relevant to it. I'm asking because I like the regular cases that we can get for our Tandem lumps but I've found that they interfere with the pump getting the transmissions from the cgm's transmitter. The case you're using in this video looks like it has less plastic/rubber/silicone covering the pump. I did check Tandem's online store but didn't see it there. I would really appreciate any information you're able to share about it.

I just did this today. I ate two packets of oatmeal (54 gm of carb). Then I entered 54 into the units field instead the carb field. Instead of covering my 54 carbs, I had dosed for 324 carbs A couple of hours later, my Dexcom alarmed and told me I was 54 I double checked with a fingerstick and realized that my BG was actually 36. I ate around 60 carbs to treat the low (since it was quite low). I waited a few minutes and then DROVE MY CAR home from work. When I got home, my wife was asleep and I considered going on a walk I hesitated because my Dexcom still showed me in the 50s An hour later, my Dexcom was still registering as "low" and my BG was in the 40s. At this point, I thought about this video and wondered if I had done something similar. I checked my pump history and realized my mistake. I too thank God for watching out for me today. Thank you for sharing your story (and your faith) with the world and the diabetes community.

I have been there. Except I pressed the Lord only knows just how many carbs I bolused for! I woke up with a super low. Walked into the bathroom, sweating. Pressed a bunch of buttons. My husband found me on the floor in there. Later on as I was coming to, the EMT'S were on either side of me and I was in bed! Now, I do limit my bolused. However, if my husband sees me treating a low in front of him, he gives me a look, and says, you have had enough! At times I want to scream and say, bud out! But thank God, I do not. It is so hard not to say "just leave me alone, I know what I am doing".Now the first incident happened some 18 yrs ago! So at least I think I learned how to not let that happen again. No Dexcom in those days. I still have hypoglycemic unawareness though. So happy for Dexcom on my phone as well as Tslim with Control IQ! Happy 4th of July! Have a wonderful time with your family! It’s because I take my basal insulin in the morning and I usually set the dose the night before and have a 9 am alarm set for it. So the alarm came and I got up groggy and disoriented all I remember is turning it off and everything was hazy then I went back to sleep. Got up an hour later(just now) and then proceeded to dial up a next dose and took and after I took it I suddenly realized I had to dial up that dose and I’m pretty sure I did that last night and now I’m freakin out what do I do?!

Freaked me out. I was at work and thank God had a kitchen where I went and started grabbing everything I could find to eat (including straight sugar). And I was eating for survival when those amygdalae are lit to save my life.... by now rational thought, GONE! I'm supposed to know about diabetes and I did what you did. Because that eating (I believe) is in response to the restless two bits of the brain that say "I'm starving"!!!!!! I'd like to say I look at every screen because I have a personal rule. But nothing with humans is 100% the info timely, right on raw truth well presented, Danica the message to some degree is you. And how you as a PWD, make decisions for the CDE part of you, the daytime you. I learn to insert my first sensor G4; on this channel. So thank you for the message.

My T1 daughter (who is 9) goes through the confirmation screens on her pump so fast! I get it. She is hungry and just wants to eat. But this is why they are there 😊 It can happen to anyone 🖤

I am also using the Tandem. I was making changes over the phone with my Diabetes Educator. Was supposed to change my 8pm basal to 0.75. And ended up changing it to 7.5. Had no idea why I was crashing every 2 to 3 hours. Until a week later when I called frantically to speak to her. I uploaded my pump. She realized right away what I had done. I never would have thought to check for that mistake. But I will now. I found the button pushing is a bit tricky on this pump. But I have often over treated during the middle of the night. And also woke up in the 100s. I think the IQ technology is fantastic. And definitely much happier with this than the Medtronic 670G.

I keep a Maxipedition Fatty labeled “Diabetic EDC Kit” in my car 100% of the time with loads of different sources of carbs. From Sugar, M&Ms, Fruit Bars, a Glucose Tabs, Glucose Gel, etc. if I were to fly somewhere I would put it in my carry on. Of course in my house I also have carbs.

That happened to me recently. I didn't know why my sugars kept going so low. Then I checked in the pump. (Control IQ) I had taken for 100cho!!! So I multiplied the IOB by the Insulin to carb ratio to see about how much more I needed to eat. It was OUTRAGEOUS!! I told my husband in case anything were to happen. I got so tired of eating, but u did it in stages. I was not sleeping and woke up with a low though. I had 27gms, and was SURE that was what I bolused for! I freaked out! I have had type 1 since I was 20,and will be 70 very soon! But my mental abilities are fine, so it wasn't that.
When I downloaded to T connect and talked to my educator she was VERY understanding!! Said she had heard that before! So only then did I feel much better!

Now that I am on regular insulin and even a pump things got a lot easier! Knowing how close I was to an accidental overdose is SCARY! I woke up once thinking I had messed the bed until I found a candy bar wrapper🤦‍♀️I was so out of it I don't even remember getting it!

Looks like the t-slim pumps are too easy to make life threatening mistakes. Luckily for you having the CGM saved you. Then you were able to apply the Max Bolus safeguard. The ten year old boy @Brandi Mason below didn't have that option. He was super lucky someone was close to comprehend the problem. Hopefully Brandi learned from you and set the same Max safeguard for her son. My Medtronic pump is a little more difficult to insert carbs and insulin data needed for the pump to deliver the needed insulin. So I've never experienced the problem that the two of you mentioned.

You should include people with Type 2 as well some of us have to take Insulin I don't but we should not be ignored I am Type II and it is not because I ate to much sugar as a kid or was a couch potato we have a lot of the same problems as Type 1 and can suffer from some of the same complications and other things such as Diabetic Neuropathy, Retinopathy and lose a foot, toe or while leg. I was a Paramedic until the day my doctor called me and gave me the news. If we go Hi the only thing we can do is drink lots of water and it takes longer for our Hi to correct itself

Similar thing happened to me. We sat down to pizza as a family and I was sorting my pump whilst talking to my kids so was quite distracted. Anyway I normally have to do a 40/60 bolus split over 8hours for pizza or I go low.....I didnt......I did it all at once because I was distracted. Some time passes and dex was screaming, double arrows down, I couldn't see properly, could speak properly, whole body was shaking. I did a blood test and was 1.9 with 13 units of insulin still onboard. It was the scariest moment of my life!!!!
Lesson learned. Now I always triple check and ask for quiet when I'm bolusing. My 8 year old is T1 aswell and I've always quadruple checked hers before delivering anything.
