    I could almost tolerate the ‘brittle bricks’ if the sets were 20+ years old but this isn’t great. Lego used to pride itself on quality products that would last generations. I get things can go wrong from time to time but this isn’t good enough, especially when lego is a premium toy. Effectively the toy is no longer ‘fit for purpose’, through no fault of your own. Wonder what lego would say if you were to email them.

    I took apart one of the old Tie Fighters. I now have to replace roughly half of the blue pieces. One thing I noticed was that a lot of the old thin pieces act as if they are almost glued to each other when left together.

  • @cccv4631
    @cccv4631 Před 4 lety +3

    This is a huge quality issue. TLG needs to address this and put out a statement. You can't market your toys as high quality products if they disintigrate after 10 years. With all the testing TLG does on plastics, it's hard to believe they weren't aware of this. I really hope they didn't compromise on quality to save a few cents. I've never had any vintage parts break like that, so something must have changed.

    It’s sad that your fire brigade has the brittle dark red. As you know 60/70s blue and late 2000s blue are both brittle. Everyone knows about the light on dark colour printing application of modern mid-late 2010s minifigures. Not a lot of people talk about the brittle stickers of the mid-late 2000s. I have stickered pieces from the 2008 cargo truck and all the cargo logos are peeling and cracked

The only pieces that did break on me in the past was with 2 transparent axe blade pieces with a clip in one of the Heroica LEGO sets. One funny thing is that I got an older Chinese set from the brand Enlighten and they have the exact same issue with the same blue color and 6 1x2 cheese slopes broke on me while assembling the set for the first time. I do hope that LEGO will figure out a way to prevent this from happening with future sets.

    I have this set, and taken it part and re-built it numerous times - had zero issues. Maybe the brittle bricks think could be to do with your particular room environment and humidity and/or the type of lighting you are storing you sets in.
    Maybe should try it with some of your other sets - it would be upsetting to see if that your lights may be giving off bad UV.

    • @BrickTsar
      @BrickTsar  Před 4 lety +4

      It does not. It depends on when you bought it or what factory the bulk of the elements were in. Also consider that this set has been stored in the exact same environment as all the other bricks in my collection. I got 2 million parts - only ones from around 2009 in blue and dark red and a few other colors affected. Also consider I took apart the entire upper floor with no problems - same set and more exposed to light than the other parts. It is 100% a manufacturing issue. When I did the brittle blue video I got 100s of comments with the same problem and that is how I found out about this set. But those factors can contribute. Just not in my case since I have a controlled environment.

    Adding my personal story here, since you said "I don't know if this is something Lego has corrected" ...they haven't. Back in late November, I bought some new reddish brown bricks from Kentuckiana Bricks (a very big Bricklink store). I used the pieces to build a cupboard for a bar in my tower (so the pieces weren't supporting any heavy weight---just each other). A few weeks later, when that floor was finished, I began installing the window columns. I always look inside when I do, and noted a couple of the reddish brown bricks (2x2's) had cracks or splits that went almost from bottom to top. Again, these were only supporting their own weight and were purchased in new condition from a reputable seller.
    That said, I do have some dark red bricks with the masonry pattern on them, that were bought from a physical Lego store (PaB FtW!) and have not experienced any issues with them. Moreover, the helicopter MOC I'm still building uses mostly blue pieces. Almost all of them are new, except for the windscreen and those 'fingered' hinge pieces. The latter I bought from Bricklink in 'new' condition and have not failed me, despite multiple tests. The little hinge fingers have not broken (despite my playing with the model some), and none of the new bricks show signs of splitting.
    Last, I did discover a white 1x2 in new condition that had a split in it but I've no way of knowing who I bought it from or from when. So... I don't think brittle bricks are a common problem, but it's not a rare thing either, and it still seems to happen with bricks (esp. 1x2's) being produced today.

    .em tnes uoy etalp eulb eht evah llits I ...Seems you need to get a humidifier; your Lego and stickers are dry rotting. Contrary to your anxieties, my unasked-for advice would be to take the building apart, just to see how much of it needs replacing; no point replacing just the parts you know are rotten when others (very likely) could be.

    No one is supposed to take the Fire Brigade (or any other modulars) apart ;) I never take my modulars apart after the`re built. Insta: @chilis_no

    This happened to me when I opened a 1977 set that was sealed. The blue plates broke and the colour changed.
    It was never opened

    This makes me question their design on the plant based pieces they hyped several years ago. That bragging seems to have vanished.

      Nylon legos have gone up in price now due to their superb quality. I have been sorting out the plant based bricks from my collection due to their lower quality.

      I invest in cheap lots of 70s-90s LEGO. Some people have a false sense with LEGO that new is better and old is less, wich is just as good for me since I don’t have to pay up for the better of the two.

    (This comment originally started with a suggestion on how to speak in reverse which has been edited out now).
    Would it please be possible to destroy some of those evil non-Lego generic imitation sets instead?? Not sure about the USA, but in some of the value stores here in the UK, it seems to have got worse with the number of available cheap non-Lego, but Lego-compatible sets. I bet they snap easier, whatever colour. Could be cheap ABS plastic containing all sorts of toxic chemicals, for all I know. Carcinogens, Mutagens, etc. I am not saying they do contain nasties (would they require FDA approval in the US?), as I clearly have no evidence, but I see myself as rather loyal when it comes to the Lego Company. Any brick without the Logo visible to me, is the work of parasites.
    Destroy these fake sets now!!!! (or give to a poor child living below the poverty line).
    Rant over.

      I think I mentioned it in the video but that’s exactly what I did. Played the recording backwards. Then I have to phonetically spell them out because the sounds uttered are not normal. It’s like trying to speak a foreign language. You hear the sound but uttering it is a hold other thing. It’s hard. Takes a lot of time. And had very little payoff. Lol! I actually practiced it and sometimes it sounded better than others. I only had so many bricks to break though - lol! I spent at least an hour with it for less than 1 minute of speech. As far as the bricks - it’s become a known problem with certain colors from this time period but I as of now am unclear of LEGO Group will acknowledge it publicly.

      @@BrickTsar Yes, sorry; I realised that you covered my point afterwards when watching again lol (hence my comment edited).
      I have observed another issue with blue bricks. Recently, I rebuilt some old sets from boxed-up bricks stored in an attic. The parts vary from early 1970's with Maxifigures, through to mid-1980's. It seems that unlike red, black and yellow, the blue bricks discolour; with some of the building, I had to select blue parts in such a way as to avoid mismatching. After sorting, building and photographing, I dismantled the sets and put them in bags. Only one breakage occurred and that was a grey 6x2 plate on the yellow castle (set 375).
      Thanks for the videos. Love them.
