Looking a little into this suggests that it could more likely be a mismatch with the dye used, another possibility would be a different temperature at which they've been molded, ABS changes properties, like toughness depending on how fast and how hot it's molded so we can't rule that out. Another possibility is just degradation due to sunlight. Any combination of this problem could be the culprit here and being that there are just some parts darkened in the whole batch makes me steer toward the "different atmosphere during the molding process + sunlight action" case... would be interesting to test some of the pieces to find a clear answer

@@penfold7800 actually I was referring to something else entirely.
I didn't even know there was such a thing that existed.
      That you were speaking of.
      Pure coincidence.
The Lego house I was referring to is one of the Lego attractions.
That had that humongous Lego tree.
And that set restaurant where you build your order.
There is a video on it.
Particular what I'm talking about is what's inside Lego house.
It's at Channel but I don't remember the exact name.
      Of the video.
Although I may have gotten it correct?
But I'll look into what you're talkin about.
And the other was a song called Lego house don't know who it's by.
As I said just a coincidence.
Strange how all those are sometimes.
But I would agree with what you said about it the Lego house that is.
I probably would have done the same if I'd been able to.
      Here's one for you.
      The house that Emmitt built.
      Although I heard years ago.
That our school had built a small house that the kids assembled.
It was too long ago to remember everything.
Oso I did not fill. Outside myself.
But this was the scale of a normal room.
I mainly designed and helped build the mechanism.
But a working like a grandfather clock.
There quote on quote Lego chimes.
That were basically just assembled long rods.
      Didn't sound great though.
It just indicated yet hours and quarter hours an option of half hour.
However the actual striking back in this room for Westminster chimes.
      Was using stretched rubber bands.
And possibly for one or two of the indications I think we used.
The white like a bungee cord.
      Long time ago.
Unfortunately it was hard to use weights to drive it.
So we wound up actually using the like a wind-up Motors.
And connecting the Technic axles with the flat round two by twos to one of the wheels
      . Of each one.
He built a lot of things that work that way.
As well as he kept one of the winding keys.
      On his key ring.
I'd seen some of his recent creations.
He had have a I guess you'd say flip clock sort of.
He used chain links and hand-painted plates that went past window in the housing.
It even had a alarm on it.
      The only non Michael parts.
      Was basically to drive it.
      AC synchronous timing motor.
      Couldn't remember if there's a 24 volt or 120 volts.
      I think it was 24?
Also we together help build a Lego cuckoo clock.
By the way it did have had the actual cuckoo mechanism.
      100% Lego.
Kip's pretty accurate time as well.
I don't think it was quite as accurate as the grandfather clock.
In terms of the cuckoo mechanism yes still 100% Lego.
How we produces sound for the cuckoo.
We use the old Lego pneumatics valve brick.
Which had the three ports coming out of a 2 by 4 brick.
Which were two check valves inside of it.
Because when you use the Pneumatic pump.
it would squeak and it was a slightly a different sound if you're brushing off put oil on the pump.
We actually use the small newer pneumatic cylinder.
      the newer one.
but the newer than the original numeric system or so.
As well as there was a lever on the side to turn off the cuckoo.
Again not practical be weight driven.
Oh yeah 1 of the motors in the grandfather clock.
was world pulling down on one of the phony weights.
that's how you wound one of them on the cuckoo clock as well.
But only one of the motors.
also both parks were set up so also both parks were set up so that you can also both parks were set up so that you.
Could have it turn off bird show times and rubber bands on the grandfather .
      clock at certain hours.
As well as on the Cuckoo-Clock as well.
Buffalo wish we're done through part of the mechanism.
Real test for the clock mechanism.

    • @penfold7800
      @penfold7800 Před 4 lety

That sounds really cool. You could have used the weights from the old 1960's lego boats for the grandfather clock mechanism and the lifting chain from the roller coaster sets. I know about the Lego house in billund. I've seen the video you're referring to. I find the house itself very disappointing. They could have been more imaginative with its shape. As it is, it looks like an ugly concrete block from the 70's. But I love the brick-based ordering system in the restaurant. It's a pity they didn't do something similar at legoland Windsor in the UK. Since it's been taken over by Merlin entertainments, its lost its magic. It's now just a corporate money making theme park instead of an inspirational Lego world. I was very disappointed when I went there to fulfil a lifelong dream. The Emmet's house Lego set is very neat, as it's a nod to the original Lego houses from the town layout and the Lego bungalow dolls house type set from the homemaker years. I wish they'd do a re-release of the white and red church from the town plan set from the 60's. I love that set.

This happened to me when I went to rebuild my 7990 Set. I post pics to a few facebook Lego groups. People noticed the pieces go a browny color and break with no evidence of force. I did a bit of research and found the brittle parts come from Czech. Apparently Czech has a notorious history for making brittle plastic, yet LEGO was still determined to build a factory there to cut production costs; and then dictate to the Czech's to use LEGO's specified plastic ingredients and methods. Well, needless to say; that Czech still went back to their ways, and hence the brittle plastic you see today. In the end, it cost TLC more in battle fees to get Czech to do things LEGO's way than what it would've cost to keep producing in Denmark.

The discolouration is the bromide in the plastic decomposing. All plastic need bromide because it is flame retardant. Bromide is normally brown but in lighter colours such as whites, yellows, blues and any other light colour has to use an almost clear bromide to preserve the colour. The darker the bromide the better quality and longer time it takes to oxidize and decompose. That's why the plastic discolours and turns brittle.

    • @jsk517

That's a misconception. The brittle (and the discoloration) it's due to a radical based mechanism and there is not possible to stop it (not completely)

Some of the newer kits that have a glossier finish to the parts end up being extremely brittle, some parts have even been coming with cracks molded in due to printing and handling errors. I think the mix is just getting something wrong with it.

If I ever had a real place of my own I had built.
I would not have any fluorescent lighting.

Or anti UV light window panes.
      Or Coatings or film whatever.
In that area of my place.
I've always wanted to have a debit card area of the house for just Lego.

      Technic axles at autotecknic parts.
By the way boys are in the works not quite complete.
It may be possible to use power functions but.
I've got some 12 volt DC motors that would be easy enough to work until I go housing.
Although I may wind up using old 120 volt Motors?
I have 12 volt DC low voltage available.
Power supplies that run other equipment.
      With added auxiliary out.
Using a car vacuum 4 clean up debris left over from the Lego sort.

This sounds like the same issue retro computer collectors have, where there's bromine in the plastic (most commonly in ABS plastic) due to the flame retardants breaking down. It usually discolors the plastics and makes them brittle, only if they're exposed to UV light. This is just an educated guess, of course, but I do know that Lego has added them in the past.

Im not architect or chemist but the only logical reason on why that lego is breaking easy is 1) the bottom holes were made first and the top with the smooth part was made last which compromises integrity of the physical structure.
    2) blue dye is very very corrosive like yellow #5 is toxic and that is why structural integrity is changed.

    • @scottthewaterwarrior

@@LLEvarts I have a few clear ones that are cracked, but I think they are on car MOCs that often find themselves sailing off of jumps and flipping end over end along hardwood floors. The black ones are on a MOC of the helicopter Airwolf which basically never gets roughed about.
Actually I just notice both clear chease slopes on my mini F-14 are cracked despite one of them being just held in by the parts around it and not actually connected! There goes my theory that the crackes are caused by the stress of having a stud pushing from the inside. Basically every 1x1 clear slope I have was bought new from the LEGO store too...
