The comic book adaptation made the sensible decision to start the story as a prequel about Roland's backstory (with some new and expanded content), and it ran for dozens of issues until it got to The Gunslinger.
It ran until it got to The Wastelands actually
Came back to relive the experience of ka-baby Matt
I'm deeply sad that I can never catch a series like this while it's being made.
Either way I've got halfway through gunslinger years ago and I'm hoping to get back into it through this series. Thanks guys!
PLEASE get through book 1.
It took me 3 tries.
Once I started book 2, there was no looking back.
@@charliekowittmusic currently stuck on chapter 3 but I'm working on it
The Dark Tower was the first large story that I finished alongside Harry Potter (due to the books releasing side by side-ish). Truly a masterpiece in my eyes and was my favorite story until I read Worm. I have been looking forward to you all doing this series! Long days and pleasant nights!
I started listening today. Your podcast was recommended on a thread in the Constant Reader group on Facebook. I have just finished my second journey to The Tower. I love this series, and I enjoyed listening to you picking it apart. I look forward to listening to the rest of your thoughts.
Thank you for doing this podcast! I love the discussions. One thing that blew my mind was the definition of the name Walter. So Walter O'Dim could mean something like "leader of the army of darkness" 🤯 I look forward to listening to more. Starting part 2 now. This series is in my top 2 of all time!
I’ve been looking for someone who has recapped chapter 1. It was bit confusing for me so I’m glad you guys talked about it and gave your opinions. It definitely has helped me understand it and makes me eager to start chapter 2 now. Thanks!
I am so pumped that you guys are doing this podcast. I have just started going back through the series, and it's great to listen to these podcasts after each section in case I missed something, or to get a second opinion. I hope you guys do it through the entire series!
We ain’t stopping til we get to the Tower! ...and then some
I literally just finished three weeks ago and I'm back in starting over again
1:15:40 One interpretation is that he has no choice but to follow the "book of Ka" because the book is already written, after all, it is all a flashback inside a book.
This is awesome 😂 Im glad i found this.
I've read this series twice & enjoyed it equally each time. I'm really enjoying this podcast. I'll just say for the first time reader that you will not predict these books so just read it & enjoy the amazing character & story development.
4 times I've been there 🙂once read and thrice heard, amazing on audio fair play.
I love it, and I'm glad Ive finally discovered I can talk about it online with ppl, as noone I know has bloody read it.
Ive just found this podcast, should be good!
I say here, and Everywhere....
Long days and pleasant nights 🌹
(edit) I started the podcast and YES!
First thing you said 😁
May you have the number, then!
I love these been listening to this all day
For me, I read the original version of the Gunslinger way back, and it seemed to me that King was attempting to re-tell classic Arthurian Legends, but as though they were Clint Eastwood style Westerns.
I still love the series, warts and all, but I would have been very interested to read whatever the "original" version of the tale would have been.
Fun podcast, though!
Lets back at it❤
the King Crimson group has been around since 68, so I don't think it was a nod to King, but who knows!
First time reading it, glad I could go through the podcast with you guys. Found myself saying "what the hell" out loud several times throughout this first part, which very rarely happens when I read. Good sign?
You will say WTH through the whole series but its a good thing.😁
Discussion question:
Never read Dark Tower before. First chapter was incredibly strange. I really enjoyed the way King built the world up as something that is completely alien, yet internally consistent.
The more I sit on this, the less I like Roland as a person. He's clearly a fascinating character, and I am excited to continue on with him! But the huge misogynistic vibes he liberally throws around are pretty yikes.
Aside from that, weird chapter, but certainly a good one! Excited to learn more and experience this epic tale!
Yep. I think Roland is intentionally not a great guy, especially in the first book. Keep in mind that he comes from a different time, a different place. His morals are a little alien to us.
@@GiubileiFernando it's also a trope. Watch the source material and you'll recognize the character
@@calebshoemaker what do you mean "watch the source material"?
@@chucktaylor2172 you know, the movie that this book was based on!
@@johnb2422 but.... Dark tower wasn't based on a movie...
You could say that the original version might just be an earlier cycle and the newly updated book would show roland in later cycles growing as a human being.
This would only be true if he had the horn of eld in the revised edition
@@GoatMortician What I meant to say was that the revised edition shows rowland in the latest cycle and the original edition could have been earlier time. In the original as I understand, he actually shot through the woman being used as a shield but in this one it was a mercy killing because she'd said the number to the undead and learned the secrets of the afterlife. Maybe he was more ruthless in that cycle, and perhaps other things were different. Unlikely I know, but it's still fun to speculate. While we are the subject, what is supposed to happen when roland blows the horn at the tower?
My favorite Stephen King novels ... Great choice 📚❤️ so looking forward to the listening to the entire series 🎧
This whole series hits different after the lock down. The world has definitely moved on.
Good job guys. Thank you .
"The world moved on"
Texas in 2022: "lmao no"
In the audio books it the town where that is hinted about is pronounced different.
Do you have a Reddit, or some sort of Forum?
We do have a subreddit we will be posting all the episodes to: www.reddit.com/r/doofmedia/
Listeners can leave answers to the Discussion Questions there, via email, or right here in the comments!
hearing you guys discuss part1 of this book sylvia reminds of Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil village
Wow, didn't expect this. I dropped the Dark Tower at the beginning of book 3, but this might motivate me to finish them.
Sheb's wake, Finnegan's wake
Are you guys reposting this on the official Stephen king subreddit as well?
We aren’t, but I have seen one of our listeners do so on the first episode. Reddit is pretty against self promotion, but if you or any of the other listeners would like to, we would love that.
I asked for permission to post it myself on the Dark Tower sub and never heard anything back
or the The Dark Tower subreddit, that one is as active if not more
There are other worlds than these
I don’t think the eggshell walking around “problematic” scenes as looked at from a modern perspective is necessary nor illuminating. Yes sticking his gun up the v and killing the demon is wild and grim, for example, but that scene and decision would be just as correct in relation to the world and the story now as it was then.
Obviously (and I don’t think this is what you two think) we aren’t superior or better in our current era compared to the artist of 82 or last century or whatever.
I READ THE WHOLE BOOK SERIES!!!! STEPHEN KING IS KING!!!!
I’ve just started this journey with you, and cannot wait to keep going! I’ve read them through twice, and love your in depth breakdowns and enjoy hearing Matt’s speculations. His accurate theories make me throw my hands up and say “you have no idea how right you are!” I am looking forward to finishing up book one with you soon!

These are typically pretty fun, less social justice in the breakdowns would be rad.
