- Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. One of the most beautiful towns in the UK. Let's explore it in this gentle happy town centre walk through Shrewsbury!
Also watch our fantastic tour of Ludlow here đđ» âą LUDLOW
Birthplace of Charles Darwin, Shrewsbury is set amidst the glorious Shropshire countryside near to the Welsh Borders and is one of Englandâs finest medieval market towns.
Shrewsbury Tourist Attractions
The town has over 600 listed buildings including the Castle and the Abbey (home of the fictional Brother Cadfael).
Relax in beautiful Quarry Park or take a boat trip on the River Severn. You will also find a huge variety of things to see and do in the surrounding countryside.
Shrewsbury Events
Each year a number of major festivals and special events are held, including the world famous Shrewsbury Flower Show.
Spring sees one of the countryâs top agricultural shows - the Shropshire County Show.
August bank holiday sees the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, one of the Ukâs top folk events.
Shrewsbury Shopping
The historic centre is a shopperâs heaven packed with designer shops, smart new malls and an amazing range of independent retailers. And of course all the bars, cafes, restaurants and you could ever wish for.
Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, in western England. It sits inside a loop of the River Severn, and its Tudor centre is lined with half-timbered houses. The medieval, red-brick Shrewsbury Castle houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum, where military artefacts include uniforms and weaponry. St Chad's Church is defined by its unique circular nave, and St Maryâs Church has elaborate stained-glass windows.
Shrewsbury was founded by the Saxons and developed by the Tudors, which probably explains why it is famed for its castle, spires, abbey and medieval buildings. Walking around the town, itâs hard not to take in the wealth of history in front of your eyes, all set around the River Severn.
So, itâs no surprise that in 1984 the cast and crew of Charles Dickensâ A Christmas Carol transformed Shrewsbury into a snowy Victorian England for the film version of his book.
Shopaholics will love Shrewsbury as there are lots of stores to choose from. And youâll find many of the traditional high street favourites on offer in indoor shopping malls too. But the townâs retail strength also lies in a wealth of independent shops. For example, Wyle Cop is thought to have the longest uninterrupted row of independent shops in the country.
And there are many. Shrewsbury Prison, for example, is one of the countryâs oldest jails. You can take a tour walking in the footsteps of prisoners and viewing one of the last working execution rooms in the country.
The Wroxeter Roman ruins are a major draw for visitors, especially since featuring on Channel 4âs Rome Wasnât Built in a Day. The site was once the fourth largest city in Roman Britain and visitors can take a tour around the ruins and explore the new Roman Town House.
There are plenty of eateries to choose from including traditional English pubs to Italian, Asian, French and Mexican. From Carluccioâs in the Square to the Armoury, which overlooks the river, there really is something for all tastes.
Shrewsbury Food Festival is held at the Quarry Park and around the town and features plenty of tasty treats
The townâs four-star Prince Rupert Hotel is the former home of King James Iâs grandson Prince Rupert and is said to be one of the townâs finest hotels.
If you love soaking up the history of a medieval castle then the town is the perfect place to visit. Shrewsbury Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1067 and since then has under gone several restorations.
Shrewsburyâs national award-winning indoor market offers eclectic shopping and has even been compared to some of the coolest markets in London.
Shrewsbury Farmersâ Market is also held in the town square once a month, usually on the first Friday of the month.
The town centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. Shrewsbury is the birthplace of Charles Darwin and is where he spent 27 years of his life.

Several decades ago my husband and I went to the Abby because that was where the Brother Cadfael books were set. Henry VIII got there first and all they had left was the chapel. A lovely warder(?) lent us the key so we could go inside. We then crossed the river and went into town. Thank you for a wonderful callback to this memory.
What a beautiful place , I loved all the historic buildings!
I have lived in Shrewsbury all of my life I am 23. The structure near the River Severn at the end of the video is apparently a DNA helix structure, I was told it was tied in with the town's history of Charles Darwin and evolution
Ah thank you! That makes sense now you mention it đđâ€ïž
@@GimbalWalkTV yep it cost loads.. price kept increasing.. waste of money, usual council wasting money
It called the quantum leap I think
Que recuerdos viendo este vĂdeo. VivĂ 2 años allĂ, en Meadow Farm Drive 30. Y otro año en Monkmoor Road 28
De esto hace 35 años ya
Glad you enjoyed your visit to my town and your night in the Nags, the statue is known to the locals jokingly as Slinky, but it is an interpretation of the DNA Helix. There are lots more interesting buildings and places you could have seen but your video would have been considerably longer. The Quarry, Shrewsbury's park is beautiful with an area inside it called the Dingle, a manicured garden created originally by the gardener Percy Thrower.
Shrewsbury is my home town and no matter where you are in the world itâs roots are pulling you back like as if they are attached to your body somehow itâs definitely home .
Lived in Shrewsbury all my life (31 years) and never taken it in like how you have shown thank you!! đđ»
A lovely video of our beautiful town.
Just a quick note - the yellow and black building labeled as Shrewsbury Regimental Museum at 1:30 is a private residence. The Soldiers of Shropshire Museum (previously known as The Regimental Museum) is based within the Castle itself.
Also, for your description - Carluccio's closed 2 years ago, there's now a lovely independent Italian in its place, La Piazetta - which you walk past in the video.
Ah thank you so much!
Appreciate the info!
I'm back in the summer to do a more indepth one now I've found my way around - but need to research more info!
Wonderful video, outstanding capture of the town . What a gorgeous town center. You can imagine the people that have walked down those streets hundreds of years before you. They done well with the mixing of old and new. You can picture the Muppet there, its my Christmas Coral is my favorite Muppet movie.
Thank you for another interesting and well produced film,If you have not been there allready you should visit Tewkesbury it is a medieval market town, I visited about 15 years ago, and would like to revisit it, but old age prevents me from walking they way I used to enjoy, these days I depend on films like yours to remind me of my walks
I love visiting Shrewsbury, I first went there in the early 1990's and fell in love with the place. My last visit was in 2018 the year before Covid. I always stay in a lovely B&B called Trevillion House in Bradford Street... Sonia and Mark Taplin are a lovely couple. I must go back there again, and also revisit Tewkesbury and Ironbridge. This is a very well produced film... a lot of the buildings I do remember. Gordon Taylor, Bonnie Scotland.
Wow what a beautiful place, every street was wall to wall history. I love Tudor architecture so much. York is beautiful love the place.
I totally agree!
Shrewsbury is a delightful county town...interesting architecture...lovely countryside
Thank you very much for your wonderful excursion! I liked it ! What a wonderful place, full of historical buildings. Best regards from Russia! Due to you efforts we can enjoy british town culture.
What a fantastic town! I really must visit! Great video and thanks for sharing.
I used to live in Castle Gate Castle Street as a little girl very close to Darwinâs statue.
My drs was situated in the building that is now the Military museum. Or right next to the museum.
It is a fabulous town . Still looks medieval half a century on.
Thank you so much for that walk.
Its amazing!â€
Another great walk round a beaitiful place! đ
Lovely place! Thanks for your sharing!
I hope you managed to visit Wyle Cop too, it's absolutely stunning! I feel like you'd very much appreciate Tanners there. Thank you for such a lovely video, I moved to Shrewsbury exactly a year ago (not from afar, only Newport) and not a day goes by that I'm not in awe of what a beautiful town it is. Was really nice to see it from someone else's perspective. Looking forward to your update video.
I have been in Shrewsbury Town loads and the park area is really cool as you get to do loads of fun things and you can also take swimming lessons there thanks for the journey aswell
I loved this video ,what an amazing town Shrewsbury is full of gorgeous architecture and I didn't spot maccy d or primark .The town had alot of class ..thanks for the walks you do ,we get to see the country in the comfort of our homes đĄ đ.
We do have a primark in town (much to the annoyance of some residents) but it's hidden in the shopping centre. The resturants in shrewsbury are it's crowning glory. We have some fabulous places to eat and drink.
Hello again, the sculpture on Mardol Quay is The Quantum Leap which I enjoyed looking at on my last visit.
I just love the fact the whole video is a walk thorugh of our beautiful shrewsbury!đ„°
WOW! Shrewsbury looks amazing. I have never been but certainly want to now having watched your walking tour.
You should!
Thank you, it certainly is beautiful and full of Historic buildings
Hey mate looks a great place too go too love the markets and Tudor buildings great vlog đŻđ
Loved it!! Thank you so much
You made an effort but MISSED so much. You walk right passed so many lanes, shuts and allies.
I did! It was my first visit so was just a find my feet walk this one
@@GimbalWalkTV Yes I was waiting for you to take the shut from the Square that comes out by the Hole in the Wall - amazing lane where some of A Christmas Carol was filmed. Much better than walking down the high street to the bottom of Pride Hill. And I expected you to point out the statue of Darwin in front of the library. What is now the library was the original building for Shrewsbury School and has some very old bits.
Excellent video Thank you for leaving a view of our van in the video while we were working on the square.
Yet another wonderful wander on Gimbal. I spent a lot of my youth in Shrewsbury. The Pizza đ Express, used to be the cinema đœïž. I saw Jaws, Grease and Star đ Wars there. Opposite the building in Mardol with the animal head, was the pet shop. We used to spend hours in there. Absolutely fantastic. Thanks a million.
Lugar maravilhoso, amei.boa tarde

Thank you so much!
Fab video. I used to work in Shrewsbury and remember my car being flooded when the river burst itâs banks. Used to drink in Cromwells
Nice one thank you Louise!
Thanks , I left Shrewsbury ( my home town) over 50 years ago , I worked in business along Wyle Cop , so hopefully you will cover this on your next tour
Great video sounds come through very well. Shrewsbury is lovely in that light.

this is absolutly beautifull i just came, back from one week spent in Rochester ( dickens city ) shewberru-y is quite far from London rochester 40 min but my next trip ( from Belgium ) is for shrewbery for a week be sure of that and then canterbury after beeing in Portsmouth and Whitechapel ( Jack the ripper ) thanks for these videos brilliant man thank you
Traffic free from 10am - 4pm on Saturdays and Sunday, itâs very calm. Wyle cop not shown which is a very steep hilled street with many Tudor buildings including two fantastic pubs
That sounds great
Whereabouts is it?
@@GimbalWalkTV it is right at the end of the High Street. In 1485 Henry Tudor marched his army through the town (which still retains its medieval street layout) and rested his troops. Tudor himself stayed at what is now named The Henry Tudor House (now a fantastic public house built in 1435) across the street is an equally stunning pub, slightly older called the Nags Head.
Great camera work BTW, smooth as silk, I will definitely check out some more of your work.
Great Video. i'm going there by train on friday. Cheers
Have a top time
Itâs a great place
Never been here before but it's definitely on my bucket list.
Lovely part of the world that
Used to live and work in Shrewsbury adds great place lots of memories lost a friend there to Lee Thompson.r.i.p
You have a remarkably steady hand for someone who was out on the town the night before. Lovely video, well done.
Thank you very much!
Very nice. I appreciated not having a lot of blabbing. Nice sound track, too. Our Dodson ancestor who emigrated to the English Colonies in North America circa 1760's was from Shewsbury Shropshire. Perhaps he would have recognized some of the older buildings. Thank you for a nice walking tour.
Love Shrewsbury.
Same!
I realise you can't show it all but down from town and walk down Wyle Cop and over English Bridge looking back over the river and up high town .. it's absolutely beautiful even more than you've shown here .
I love it I would like to live there đ
I do
Great

I live in Shrewsbury, I'm not a big fan of this town. But have to admit Shrewsbury has tones of history and beauty. Very nice video.
Many thanks!
My wife and I are visiting Shrewsbury in July. It looks a lovely town. On a par with or even better than Chester and York.
Agreed!
God, I love Shrewsbury so much, take me backkk
Great place isn't it
This is my home town wooo
Great place too!
Hi I've just been watching your video on your walk around Shrewsbury . The thing by the river is called The Quantum Leap .
Full of interest, as always. Found Costa coffee on the second viewing but only after cheating by looking it up, lol đ
I imagine there was some groping going on in Grope Lane at one time.
Sorry for your sore head. I was trying to imagine what your favourite tipple is. I'm guessing good quality ales.
Thanks for another great walk!
Rumours are here in Shrewsbury it was where the prostitutes used to hang around many years ago đđđđ
@@dianerogers8805 I believe it was fairly common in different cities in England. For example, York has "Grape Lane" . The name was changed from the original. You can Google for the original. I won't repeat it here.
@@dlittlester does it begin with a c? đ€Ł
Oh !! not blue plaques but listed buildings - thanks. And the music was very apopro đŒđ”
I've visited often and I've always liked Shrewsbury. Used to love the old Gay Meadow (went with Hull City loads of times), the bloke heading for the river with his coracle to rescue the ball đ Not been to the new stadium, what's it like?
Last time I was in Shrewsbury shops had started closing down similar to everywhere else, hope it doesn't go into decline, nice place đ
Cheers as always đ»đ
Hello Lovely, had to comment as i live in Shrewsbury on the housing estate near the new meadow i've been in to the odd Christmas party its a pretty impressive stadium for a lower league club. Maybe one day you will visit the town again.
Great stadium, still miss the Old Meadow đđâœâœ
You'll never replicate the Gay Meadow or fishing for footballs đ€Ł but the New Meadow is a nice stadium. Good for functions too. Shops have slowly recovered with new businesses added to the list. There has been a lot of closures in the other shopping centre but that's down to on/off development as per Shropshire Council. Otherwise doing well. Hope to see you back here soon! All the best.

Dinosaur Vertebra, liked the look of the hole in the wall pub..
You didn't mention the Costa coffee. I love Shrewsbury. You could do a second video and include the Quarry and Dingle
you need to come Oswestry!!
I will - thatâs a great idea thank you!
We had a shop in the high street called pandoras box.that was near costa.anyways we miss shrewbury a lot as was a nice town.now we moved to hanley
