Not really. A bullying, controlling husband, a place you are afraid to go because he said so? This situation is not as unusual as most people would like to think. BOTH sexes do this to others, so I am not just saying men do it. She probably DID think it was odd but was too afraid to question it or he 'taught' her that she was a 'nosey' paranoid cow to even ask. At worst, she probably thought he had some 'magazines' down there.

He knew all along that it was not something she wanted. She ran away for goodness sake. He tried claiming that it was consensual because he knew that he was wrong, he knew he had been raping his own daughter which began when she was just 11 years old. If he really truly believed that she wanted all that from him. Then why lock her up in a dungeon for 24 years???? He knew that had the police not brought her back in 1983 when she ran away, that she would've never came back there. That evil monster. I cannot even say human being in regards to him. David Wilson is absolutely right: I spent part of my childhood in a fairly small, sleepy city in the American midwest...which was also the site of the unspeakably ghastly torture/murder of a teenage girl in the 1960s. The crime became world-famous, and several movies as well as countless documentaries have been made about the case.
Oddly enough, just to show how small a town it was- the grandfather of one of my best friends there was lead prosecutor on the case, and another childhood friend of mine works at the same police station which responded to the murder back in the 60s.
Oh, and in this same small, sleepy community, my childhood neighbors were subjected to a home invasion which turned into a hostage situation that killed one of my elderly neighbors!

Wanted to drop by and say that i am thankful you guys covered this case. And to give minor details on Elizabeth and her kids after the imprisoment of Joseph.
I dont live far from Amstetten however I have never been there myself. I dont remember how the public reacted when the news came out, but so far, only older people know of this case and some younger people who are into true crime here. People try to forget this monster and how much the system failed Elizabeth. And if we read about a murder case or kidnapping case, you can hear the case of Elizabeth linger in the air too.
Fritzl is/was kept in a special prison for the criminally insane in the prison of Krems-Stein.
After the trial she got a new name, and her identity is kept a secret with strict laws and regulations. We dont know where she is or her kids, all we know is that she is in a tiny hamlet which is refered to as "village X". Her kids are from the ages of 18-32, we dont know their names and all we know is they sleep with their doors open and have weekly therapy sessions.
They live in a two-story family home which is constantly monitored and patrolled by security guards, while any stranger lurking nearby can be picked up by the police within minutes. And Elizabeth has a personal bodyguard with her.

As far as I’ve heard prisons for the criminally insane are actually quite worse. I can’t speak for Austria, but they’re not like a normal mental wards where you get to color and talk about how you feel. Rather, it’s more like to being around people that smear poop on walls, furiously masturbate, yell incoherencies constantly coupled with many of the normal aspects of prison. Prison is violent either way but criminally insane is probably even more so and unpredictably at that. Also, when someone is considered “sane” either on meds or not they just get sent to normal prison.

Love the podcast, can't help but think you would find Varg Vikernes and the whole Norwegian black metal scene of the 90s interesting. The "abridged version" is, Vikernes killed Euronymous by stabbing him 23 times in self defence. Faust, drummer for Emperor killed a homosexual man in an Park, and ironically named singer 'Dead' killed himself in gruesome fashion.

It's very interesting and with Varg now having fully finished his sentence, but still a very controversial figure, he has been able to give his own insights and perspectives on the murder. Also with the release of the movie "Lords of chaos" and countless eyewitness accounts, it could easily be a 2/3 parter. Keep it up fellas. This is the kind of show I wish I would have thought of first! 😂

To think that her own father could do that sort of thing is insane!! She was extremely controlled by him. To be brutally raped , torched, and abused by him is outrageous and cruel. 😢😭😫🤬😓😰🤮🤧😈👎✋🏿🙏🌇🔐🔒🔦☮️♦️🇬🇧🇺🇸 1:06:14
