  • I wanted to learn about Anglicanism so I went to St. George's Anglican Church in Las Vegas and spent the day with Father Gordon Hines. His church is a part of the Anglican Province of Christ the King.

      Likewise, defending heresy will eventually require you to abandon either the divinity or humanity of Christ.

      @@Baraodojaguary I see what you're saying but that's not exactly it. If a Catholic taught you that then I apologize for you being mislead. (I teach this stuff and I've studied it very closely for a long time). Please hear everything I write here in the most non-confrontational way. .... The Catholic Church regards its teachings as the "fullness of truth" (something which it largely believes from reading scripture and the Church Fathers). But most people who call themselves Christians are acknowledged are in fact Christian, as are their communities (whether the call themselves a church, a congregation, etc.) This is why when someone converts to Catholicism from another Christian church, they cannot receive the sacrament of Baptism (you can't be Baptized twice and the official Catholic Teaching is that those who are Baptized in other Christian churches are as Baptized as any Catholic ever. And since the Bible says that Baptism is what makes someone a Christian and it's Christians who comprise these congregations, then other Christian Churches are in fact Christian. In fact, there are many Christians in the world who aren't Catholic who are better at living a Christian life than I am. But when different Christians disagree on predestination and loss of salvation and authority and the canon of scripture (and so on) on denomination is going to be the most correct. The enlightenment thinkers (most of whom rejected Christian churches) convinced a lot of people that all ways of thinking are equal in truth. But conflicting truths can't both be true. So only one group can be more correct than the others. The Catholic Church also stands by the words of Jesus that he desires us to be one and united, and has reasoned that She (the Church) is that point of desired unity. ..... I'm not asking you to agree. But does that make sense?

      And I was Roman Catholic and I unpoped to become Anglican Catholic. Why! They demand believe or else on nonessentials! Also Roman Catholics have a saying; Deus est Papa and Papa est Deus(God is the Pope and the Pope is God) which is no different than Julius Caesar who was killed by Brutus Cassius for Caesar trying to be God with the et tu Brute("and you Brute"). When I found this out, I also unpoped.
      Here is why I unpoped:
      "The crowning objection to the Roman system was not so much its doctrine in the main, but its rigid regimentation, which dictates every minutest detail of belief, conduct, rite, and ceremony. Some of our brethren and Fathers in God appear to be swayed for the moment by that Romanensian rigidity; against which, as against every attack on the liberty wherewith Christ hath set us free, I remain completely Protestant.
      But this is too solemn a matter of controversial dealing. It is a matter of man's most sacred prayer; which he cannot pray, whatever book he uses, without the Holy Spirit. We cannot quarrel about a work in which we seek to be led by the Holy Spirit of God: we can only, with complete mutual respect, lovingly try to understand one another."

    Hey Matt, this video was mega confusing to me when I saw the thumbnail, cause as an Anglican, I’m definitely very Protestant. You definitely made a good move in going to a High Anglican Church cause that really is what original Anglicanism is, but yeah they really differ a lot. I live in Sydney Australia and we have a joke around here that Christians disagree with atheists, protestants disagree with Catholics, baptists disagree with presbyterians, but in Sydney, anglicans disagree with Anglicans. So yeah, Anglicanism, as is my knowledge, is veryyyy up to the diocese, so it varies a lot. Also the fact he kept saying mystery is really different to us. I’d love to talk more about our differences if you’re curious!

Would be good to get a bit more context on the differences between Anglicanism and Episcopalianism in the US (I didn't even know there were Anglicans in the states). My perspective of Anglicanism is coloured by my experiences here in Australia and it's nice to hear a different angle on things. My understanding of the Australian context is that it is unique in that the Sydney diocese (and a few other pockets) are much more evangelical than the rest of the Anglican church. I attend an independent evangelical church and many of our pastors went through the Sydney Anglican theological college because of its evangelical bent. Hopefully that's a fair characterisation of Australian Anglicanism... Happy to be corrected by someone who knows more though. I love what you do Matt - it's super important and there needs to be more stuff like this on the internet.

      "High church" Anglicanism is actually a modern attempt of recreating an ancient church. But it's not the Anglicanism of the Reformation, which is when the BCP, and thus the 39 Articles, and thus the DNA of the Anglican church was established. The High church movement started in the late 1800's as an attempt to make ties with Rome again, hence the Roman language in High churches; the centrality of the altar, mystery of the eucharist, non-centrality of preaching.
      Not trying to be divissing at all. J.C.Ryle wrote about the movement in his book Holiness.

      Yeah, Anglicanism 'originally' (of Cranmer/the English Reformation, although of course you could be talking about pre-reformation Anglicanism or the Celtic Christianity before that) was more 'Catholic' (or at least, high-church) than the very low-church Anglican churches I prefer, but it was still more 'Protestant' than Anglo-Catholic churches like this one are.
      Anglo-Catholicism started off (or, as they might prefer, was revived) in the Oxford Movement in the 19th century, and I'm kind of surprised Gordon didn't mention it.

    • @MarkHyde
      @MarkHyde Před 5 lety +4

      The other complication too is the Church of England in the UK is an 'established church' as in part of the fabric the United kingdom itself as a nation - other international expression as apart of the 'Global Anglican Communion' aren't necessarily that - like Australia the Anglican Church of Australia is separate from the state.
      A fascinating video though. Thanks for this video. I'm also an Australian Anglican. (Reformed/Evangelical in theological focus.)
      "I thought this was the right place to start with Anglicanism because of the part Catholic/part Protestant feel of it."
      Matt - that is a misconception brought about the context of the rise of the Oxford Movement in the 19th Century. Amazing replies in this thread explain the historical expression of Anglicanism better than I can.

    Bro you are a legend! Thankyou so much for helping me understand/ change my perspective of different denomination's. It's so hard to find a christian that will lay out multiple views and there reasoning without trying to persuade you one way or the other. If your ever in NZ and need a place to stay, you will always be welcome.

    Transubstantiation isn't Platonic but Aristotelian by way of St Thomas Aquinas. It means the appearance remains but its substance changes. This is not a metaphisical explanation, but a description. Looks like bread, IS Body of Christ.

    • @johnteds4761
      @johnteds4761 Před 5 lety +5

      yea, the bread and wine keep their accidental properties in transubstantiation.

    • @IamGrimalkin
      @IamGrimalkin Před 5 lety +6

      Well Aristotle was a student of Plato so you'd expect them to be similar.
      It sounds like this guy believes in the Sacramental Union of Luther; which denies the Aristotelian framework, but if you try to force it into it you get more the ides that the substance of both the bread and the body are there.

    • @xtusvincit5230
      @xtusvincit5230 Před 5 lety +18

      @@IamGrimalkin Aristotle did not subscribe to Plato's forms. That is a huge difference. Aristotle explained things by the four causes: material, formal, original and teleological. It's quite different from the Platonic. Anglicans are neither Lutheran nor strictly Catholic in their theology, except that high Anglo-Catholics such as this one will definitely fall on the Catholic side.

      Well in my opinion Anglicanism in the past was associated with elitism.... I still think it is in many ways. I'm Australian and now catholics make up the largest christian denomination here. In the old days catholics were discriminated against because they were mostly Irish. There were ads in the newspapers for jobs 'Catholics need not apply' what an insult! All commemorations were celebrated in a Church of England Church because we had links to the English Monarchy. I would NEVRE EVER be Anglican or CofE even though I'm a VERY lapsed catholic. Partly because of immigration, now catholics are in the majority and protestants are on the decline here.

Thank you for having an open mind, not fearing different dogma by not judging it but listening and being confident in your own beliefs. God Bless.
